- iSharQ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Or, if you use a mac, this single line in the Terminal does the trick:
ditto -rsrcFork /Volumes/your_iPod_name/iPod_Control/Music/ ~/Desktop/music_from_ipod - awfulshot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8i use winamp to backup my own ipod music. with 5.2 this no longer requires a plugin as well.
- andywirtanen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Heh, really?
What else are you waiting for... wi-fi? - intoflatlines, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8sharepod works great for me.
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7itunes is worthless? what are you smoking? It's ergonomic. And it's powerful. It does everyhting in a simple flawless way. Smart Playlists are easy to do. The syncing with ipod is nice. And the tagging functions while not complex serve their purpose.
Everything makes sense in the Itunes system. Winamp has panels flying everyhwere. Use Itunes with a better computer, you might like it. - LDaVinci, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think this article is worth digging for the content, for everyone's comments ... here you can see every option to get your music out in Linux, Mac or Windows.
No Digg for CNET, Digg for your comments. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7ohhhh, so that's how you do it
I was playing the songs, singing along, and recording them back onto my PC with a mic - mastershake1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You forgot to type NO DIGGGG!!!!!!!11one1 in your post. If you're going to be self-important and let the world know how smart you are, you have to go all out.
Dugg, because I'm tired of arrogant "No Diggers" making posts like the above. - Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Was going to say the same thing, really.
find . -iname *.mp3 -o -iname *.aac -exec cp {} ~/music /;
Or something like that, I'm tired and have been drinking. - warfang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree with you. A lot of you that comment might know how to do this, but I bet you there are more people that don't know how to do this. If you don't like it then don't digg it. I like how the digg community is offering other ideas and better ways to do it.
digg++ so other people will read these comments - aMillionAndNine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, how ridiculous of them to publish information that some people already know about. I guess they are just stupid.
- JustMatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm not like an Apple fanboy or anything, but iTunes isn't worthless. iTunes on Windows sucks, yes, but iTunes in Mac is actually pretty sweet, at least in my opinion. It is just so ***** slow on Windows. (this isn't a Windows bashing comment, it is just true that iTunes is much slower on Windows)
- decile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3CopyPod works great for getting music off the iPod.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't spend your money on that man! Mediamonkey is just as freakin good and it seems to do just as much (if not more). It's also free and i've been obsessed with it. You can auto-tag full albums and it'll search for the art from amazon. It'll also auto organize everything.
Oh yeah, and it's free.
Cripes, I sound like a freaking advertisement. I usually don't hold programs in such high status, but Mediamonkey has been incredible since I got it.
http://www.mediamonkey.com - squeevey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll add another to the list:
Ephpod. Works great!
foobar2k also has an Ipod DLL - squenix1221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've always used EphPod...there was an article on engadget a while ago that used it
http://www.engadget.com/2004/11/02/how-to-get-music-off-your-ipod/ - fatlip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i used music brainz.. i got a lot of mis-names on there.. i much prefer Tag&Rename
http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm - warfang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What do you think digg is for!?
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah there are multiple programs that are better at doing this than manually transferring everything over. Mediamonkey (which is my favorite media organizer/player...it's great, check it out) has a feature that transfers all files from the Ipod back to the computer and it takes all of the tag information, transfers it with the files, and can organize it any way you please (i.e. my music///bandname - track name.mp3.
It works great. I had to transfer all of my music from my old computer to my new and it couldn't be any more simple. - wernst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One word: Yamipod.
Versions for Linux, Windows, and Mac. Have all three versions on your iPod, and NEVER worry about getting to your music again, even from a friend's computer.
Totally free. Totally Awesome
(Boy, do I sound like a tool or what? But really, I just like the software, and it has saved me many times.)
http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/ - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You could always just go into the ipod drive (usually H in Windows), turn on show hidden folders, goto music, drag and drop into iTunes. Voilla, you've just put the songs from your iPod back onto your computer, no need for a program or using the Terminal.
- ashleyhancock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is stupid, you just need to plug in your iPod with Disk Drive Enabled, when iTunes detects it say you don't want it to sync then just go to file>add folder and select your iPod. I've done this when I 'donated' my music collection to my friend. Much easier and simpler if your want to get everything off your iPod, because there is no way of finding individual songs or albums on the iPod as they are given random file names.
- davieboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use WebPod to access (copy) my ipod music. It provides an HTTP (Web Browser) interface and an FTP interface (to allow you to browse it using any FTP client). Plus it is written in Java so can be used on any platform. Try it out at http://www.davieboy.net/webpod/
- LDaVinci, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Same here... I used iPodAgent and CopyPod... but both crashed (Out Of Memory errors).... Only Sharepod worked.... the only thing is that you need to have iTunes installed in order to "pack" the songs you want to extract into a Playlist, since Sharepod only extracts Playlists... but it works and I like it... and since the executable is IN the iPod, I can use it on any computer that I can plug my iPod.
http://www.sturm.net.nz/website.php?Section=iPod+Programs&Page=SharePod - schildkroeter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't believe none of you mentioned iPodDisk yet... if you use Mac, USE IT! I switched from Senuti, because it probably has the cleanest interface possible... the Finder.
It lets you access your Music right in the Finder, browse through folder, except with a sort of http protocol, you can access it by Artist, Genres, Playlists, Albums, ... and subfolders are sorted alphabetically!
You know what, just check it out: http://ipoddisk.ourbiti.com/ - zezak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3“Senuti,” you mean.
http://wbyoung.ambitiouslemon.com/senuti/ - StarWarsFever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2iPod Access is what i've always used. easy easy
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2gtkpod for linux.
- mastershake1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's worse is how many people make comments that add nothing to the thread but just whine about the quality of the articles. Oh, and then add "No Digg" to their post because the world needs their opinion.
If you want to improve the site, try staying on topic. - tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dugg just because of all the great info in the comments...thanks guys!
- Meegeekai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg it, this is useful for road warriors. I have used CopyPod and like it, but this is very useful. The one thing I would like to see in future updates is the ability to delete a song or podcast from the iPod itself instead of futzing with iTunes ( or whatever).
- JoePineapples, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pod Player / Yamipod do this faster and easier
- squenix1221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well it was possible before itunes 4.7, when that came out it was disabled
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting stuff, I've never heard of them, but cool.
You can play all types of formats if you install IpodLinux on your ipod. It's great. - JustMatt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Because, the title has "iPod" in it, duh.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone threw me a message on my site asking how to transfer the files using MediaMonkey. I wrote up a sort of tutorial, hope it's not too confusing. Use it at your own risk of course. It works for me though:
Ok this is what you'd do -
Open Mediamonkey
Open Tools > Options
Go down to Portable/Audio Devices
There should be one Ipod device plugin, it'll be named after your Ipod.
Click on it, hit configure button to the right
Click on Synchronization Options
Change "Synchronize Tracks to" to wherever you want the tracks to be put into
Under "Auto Synchronization Settings" MAKE SURE "Delete tracks that aren't on the auto synchronization list" is NOT checked.
Check "Auto Synchronize Tracks from the device to the PC"
Plug in your Ipod (If you Hadn't Already)
Click the little button that says "Auto Synchronize Devices" in the main Interface.
Good Luck. - MikeKnoop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really like iPod Agent. It's freeware with the option of purchasing a pro liscence and unlocking some addition features, but as is will rip every song and place it into a specified directory. Also renames song files to the correct name. I recommend it.
-Mike - intoflatlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LDaVinci:
i don't have to have the songs that i want to extract on a playlist.. i just go to "all " or something and expand it and all of my songs are there. - deftony, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7this is a joke, did the people at CNET really take this long to figure this out. If so, I've just lost alot of respect for that site. I prefer winamp with the ml_ipod plugin, and it works great. I've completely uninstalled itunes, it's worthless.
- buddyglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ml_ipod seems to crash alot. A couple months ago; I tried it on a couple different computers and still get errors from time to time. Has their been a newer version to fix this problem
- aMillionAndNine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is amazing that not everyone else knows about it like you do. You must be smarter than those other people.
- vikvaughn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4i bought one of the original ipods almost 5 years ago... even then i knew how to get my music back off of there.
- brhad56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't know. I'll be sure to try it.
- RhythmGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use IART (I as in EYE). It's 20 bucks though, but does album art, and lyrics. The problem with just dropping the music off the IPOD is that you have NO clue what it is. For those of us with TONS of songs on the IPOD, this would be just as bad as losing the music all together, cuz it would take HOURS to listen to every song and retag. Assuming the tags aren't imbedded in the file, even though the filenames are random.... Can anybody confirm that this is the case? (I.E. music dropped off the IPOD is not identified at all as to what song it is)
- andywirtanen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uh. RTFA? This is only for Windows iPods.
- beejay54, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, where was this 2 weeks ago!?!? I managed to loose my music library (a lot of which I bought legally) when I plugged my iPod into my new iMac shortly after formatting my old eMac (which is where my music library lived). I figured I was safe with all of my music backed-up on my iPod, but I mistakenly hit yes to a prompt (my own fault I realize) when plugging the iPod into my new mac and it managed to wipe out my backup on the pod. I tried to recover it off the iPod with various software with no luck, needless to say I was NOT happy.
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can also use one called yamipod i believe
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Agreed. Considering that CNet considers itself a site that caters to people with some degree of computer literacy, it seems ridiculous that anyone would actually need to be told how to do this; its logic.
- s1lentslayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ephpod for me. http://www.ephpod.com/
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2well to comment ph3rny, some people dont know about it, and this might spread the news some
