How-to: Properly setup Gmail IMAP for the iPhone & Apple Mail
5thirtyone.com — Following the recommended settings provided by Gmail will get you basic IMAP support, but the settings will not sync your Sent Mail, Drafts, Trash, or Junk properly. Here are the basic settings to ensure that your email clients don't create unnecessary Gmail labels during synchronization.

- hanapbuhay, on 10/29/2007, -2/+83Nice write-up, but first I need IMAP enabled on my Gmail account. I'm hoping by Friday 6pm, their roll out is complete.
- Ireland, on 10/25/2007, -0/+15I wonder why you chose that specific time? :P
- zweben, on 10/26/2007, -5/+4Maybe that's when he's getting Leopard, and he wants to set it up as soon as he gets it installed. Leopard comes out on Friday, probably around that time.
- kaplanfx, on 10/25/2007, -0/+7I think it was a rhetorical question, note the smiley face (with tongue)

- aspec, on 10/25/2007, -28/+3That you want to spend 500 bucks and get stuck with AT&T for two years?
- TomFrost, on 10/25/2007, -3/+27Dear lord I am sick of moronic haters posting this *****. It's $399, it's unlockable to work on many different services, and -- here's the clincher -- AT&T is actually very good depending on your region. I'm in the US. I'd never get Verizon because they cripple the hell out of everything they sell and charge for the most inane services, Sprint/T-Mobile have extremely spotty coverage where I live, but AT&T gives me a strong signal most everywhere. My iPhone with the iPhone data plan is hundreds of dollars cheaper than a Blackberry with a Blackberry data plan over the course of two years.
But please. Keep bitching about something you know nothing about to make yourself feel all warm and tingly inside.- eplawless, on 10/25/2007, -11/+5"AT&T is actually very good"
bahahaha - DJRayne, on 10/25/2007, -10/+1SATAN is GOOD
AT&T is GOOD
So AT&T must be Satan?
Ok, not so much, but we are dealing with someone who is talking about how god AT&T is so they will buy anything. - TomFrost, on 10/25/2007, -1/+11Did ya'll miss where I said it's regional? Yes, AT&T is a huge conglomerate who stole government broadband funding and is trying to control the world and is inherently evil. I get that. But in my area, they're the only provider with good signal that doesn't cripple their phones. So keep insulting me and telling me all about how I'll buy anything when I've clearly made the only acceptable choice for where I live.
"hurr hurr AT&T is horrible and you're stupid for saying otherwise and I have no reasoning to back it up in your case" - DJRayne, on 10/25/2007, -1/+8Your right. Where I live AT&T coverage is very bad but if I lived elsewhere I may feel different.
- DangerStepp, on 10/25/2007, -1/+7I already have AT&T as well. Forutunately enough, I have never had any issues with coverage or reception. I'm fairly happy; so purchasing an iPhone wouldn't be that big of a leap.
- eplawless, on 10/25/2007, -11/+5"AT&T is actually very good"

- DagMX, on 10/25/2007, -9/+0mm...you know there are tons of phones that have been doign pop3 and imap before the iphone?
Heck, my sony p1i has a full hardware qwerty kepad, a touchscreen, support for blackberry and pop3 and imap and it costs less than an iphone.
Hell, you could even use pop3 and imap on old nokia smartphones with the right software installed.
And I know I'm going to get dug down for saying smethings better than the iphone, but the fact of the matter is that it isn't the only phone that does mail.- TomFrost, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6Was anyone claiming that it was? This has nothing to do with an advancement in the iPhone, this is about Gmail rolling out IMAP access, and how to set it up properly. The iPhone didn't change or do anything special.
- chan0429, on 10/25/2007, -3/+1You might think so but Google specificly mentions it in the screenshot at (http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/10/23/gmail-gets ... And has specific instructions for setting it up on the iPhone. Also when looking at the google What's New page (http://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en/about_wha ... on IMAP guess what the primary example on using it and setting it up is? Now has the iPhone added anything to IMAP? No. But it might have added a whole load of users asking Google to add IMAP support who might have otherwise not cared.

- tdp05, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4i love mine, even using web mail to check my gmail. I know the blackberry and other smartphones do the same thing, but the design and simplicity of use reaaly make a difference.
I show people the phone, show them how to zoom in and out and the finger swipe to navigate, as those are the only things that aren't obvious as you play with the phone. Never having picked it up, people can listen to music, browse the web, and browse pictures with a 15 second tutorial. Having played with blackberry's several times, I still don't know how to do anything with them.

- MikeyisaFag, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4I still wish there was a way to Archive directly from Mail or the iPhone, anyone have any suggestions?
- iotashan, on 10/25/2007, -4/+0Looks like all you have to do is delete it:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answe ...- colto, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Maybe you can setup some type of mail filter that takes all of your "read" emails and moves them into Archive whenever you login? I haven't ever really tried anything like this so I am not sure how powerful Google's filtering is in GMail but it's worth a shot.
- etandrib, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5Aero (below) says the following:
Be careful: If you set the Deleted Mailbox to [GMAIL] > Trash on the server, it will delete your mail instead of archiving it.
To archive your mail from the iPhone, set the Deleted folder to "Deleted" on your iPhone. When you delete a mail message on the iPhone, it will be sent to the "Deleted" folder on your iPhone and to the Archive on your GMail account.

- Paranoidmarvin, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Step 4: Profit??
- nicheplayer, on 10/24/2007, -9/+4I can see why this would be handy for the iPhone, but why would I want to collect my Gmail in Mail.app? I mean, by now, you've been using both applications for a couple years, probably, and you have things set up differently in each case. Why not keep using Gmail for Gmail and Mail.app for whatever else you're using it for. I ask this as someone who hasn't opened Mail.app more than twice other than by accident since I got my Gmail account.
- dark1152, on 10/25/2007, -1/+17I use Mail.app simply to have a single place where I can access all of my mail for multiple accounts. Having to go to 3 or 4 different web sites just to check for new messages gets very old, very quickly. Plus, I do need to get to old emails when I am offline sometimes as well. Of course, I also think the Google 'design scheme' is ugly as sin. Quick to load, but considering I spent the money on the mac, means that I like shiny things etc.
- Modano, on 10/24/2007, -1/+6Sometimes it's handy to have an offline backup and use a native app. If you're working on several things at once or doing a lot of formatting, for instance. Or on a plane. Mail.app will feed into spotlight which is pretty nice too.
- geoken, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4I use gmail almost like an exchange server. I don't particularly prefer it's interface to Outlook (not to say it has a bad interface, just saying outllok's is better). I use Gmail for a couple of reasons.
1. Gmail lets me redirect my email to their mail servers (I don't mean redirect at an email level but at the mx nameserver level). Gmails mail servers are more robust than my web hosts servers and their web based client (gmail) destroys my ISPs web based client (horde).
2.Gmail lets me use their SMTP server, this alliviates the need to constantly change SMTP servers between work, home and the road (most ISP's will not allow mail to be sent using someone elses SMTP server, or perhaps it's the other way around and ISP's SMTP servers wont accept mail if the user isn't on their network. Either way it amounts to the same thing, I need to change my SMTP server every time I change locations.)
3. Keeping the mail on Gmail and having my outlook clients connecting to Gmail lets me keep mail sync'd. - davidlow, on 10/24/2007, -1/+3I travel a lot internationally and am frequently out of reach of the internet for long time periods (rural hotels in 3rd world countries, taxis, 18-hour plane rides, airports with stoopid Wi-Fi systems, etc.).
My coworkers who are in the same situation are constantly scrambling for internet access because they DON'T use an offline POP3 mail manager. I only need access twice a day to keep up with the home office in New York thanks to Mail.app. - johnnybluejeans, on 10/24/2007, -1/+2Personally, I just don't think any web based email interface can hold a candle to a native client.
- AceTracer, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1Sometimes I need to access my e-mail offline, not an easy task when you're using web mail. Plus Mail.app integrates WAY better than any webmail app can.
- BossKey, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1I have the opposite reaction as nicheplayer. I'd ask "why would anyone NOT want to collect their Gmail in Mail.app?"
I use IMAP with my ISP's email, through the Apple Mail client. For many years, this has given me the ability to take advantage of IMAP synchronization to any mail client (webmail, Apple Mail, whatever, on any device I use), while Apple Mail's local caching means I can bring up any of my 1016 messages and their attachments even when there is no Internet connection available.
- ereg, on 10/26/2007, -35/+4If I wanted inferior touch screen technology covered up with the guise of aesthetics on a glorified external hard drive that allows me to talk to people via a cell plan of veritable extortion, I'd buy an iPhone.
- PenguinWrangler, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Nice alliteration. Almost made the sentence worth reading.
- BoneStamp, on 10/26/2007, -0/+3In other words, you're jealous because you can't afford one so you put your hater pants on. Name some other pocket device at that price point that has a real web browser, wifi support and GSM telephony and I'll understand why you hate the iPhone so much. Don't even start with any Nokia product, I said a real web browser AND GSM.
- elint6, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1why do you want GSM? so you can get inferior DATA service in the U.S.? Umm, and Blackberry 8820? The new Sprint Touch, is it called? On a true 3G CDMA data plan. Yeah, and with the new Opera browser that up'd the ante, how about that?
Now that I named it, you understand why a person who answers that hates the iPhone? Oh wait, I may get one next weekend.
Sometimes I question the logic in humans.

- PiMPSP, on 10/25/2007, -26/+1Great another reason for the iPhone freaks to post about this ***** for weeks
/me awaits to be dugg down- prth8machine, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5Granted.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/27/2007, -0/+6Great, another reason for trolls to post annoying comments about how much they hate the iPhone and iPhone stories instead of just ignoring them and moving on.
- bram, on 10/26/2007, -7/+14YUCK, someone spilt pepto on that site.
- recover82, on 10/31/2007, -1/+14The pink has to do with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

- Aereo, on 11/01/2007, -0/+26Be careful: If you set the Deleted Mailbox to [GMAIL] > Trash on the server, it will delete your mail instead of archiving it.
To archive your mail from the iPhone, set the Deleted folder to "Deleted" on your iPhone. When you delete a mail message on the iPhone, it will be sent to the "Deleted" folder on your iPhone and to the Archive on your GMail account.- nbeighley, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5Another option, if you want the messages to be deleted, is to keep 'Deleted Mailbox to [GMAIL] > Trash on the server, and if you want to archive a message, drop it into the 'All Mail' box...it will be removed from the inbox and archived.
- isdereks, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5This is actually the correct method. Why would you want to set Deleted Mailbox to Deleted on your iPhone which would archive the email in Gmail? If you're deleting a message, don't you want it gone from your account. Drop the email into [Gmail] All Mail if you want it archived.
- nbeighley, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5Another option, if you want the messages to be deleted, is to keep 'Deleted Mailbox to [GMAIL] > Trash on the server, and if you want to archive a message, drop it into the 'All Mail' box...it will be removed from the inbox and archived.
- ramshaw, on 10/27/2007, -1/+10Damn this was quick, my Gmail doesn't even support IMAP yet.
- jackyyll, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5One of my accounts does, but it's not my main account. How stupid.
- spazzcat, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Mine didn't at 2:00, but it does now...its rolling out very slowly
- jackyyll, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5One of my accounts does, but it's not my main account. How stupid.
- Shastadad, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2I just hope that when the bugs are worked out of this process it will defeat my ISP's blocking of Port 465 (gmails send port). Since it is such a pain to leave my mail client to go into web mail to send mail.
- rancemo, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Use port 587 instead.
- risotto, on 10/25/2007, -8/+1Well, these news about gmail supporting IMAP are all so bogus as long Google doesn't activate the feature for the general public. Looks like a few bloggers just want to draw traffic to their sites. Another thing that would interest me, but of course no one could test yet: is IMAP IDLE supported?
- jamescoletti, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1Looks like all of my Google Apps domain accounts have IMAP available, but my classic Gmail account doesn't yet. Must have rolled out to Apps users first since there's a much smaller userbase and IMAP is another plus to help push Google Apps into the corporate/enterprise sector.
- edzilla, on 10/29/2007, -1/+2I've got imap activated on my standard account.
- michaelrjohnson, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2And I don't have it in my Apps account. (But I do in my Gmail)
- jeremiahx, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1yeah it is showing up in my regular gmail but not my apps gmail. I was afraid they weren't going to offer it.
- BoneStamp, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1I don't have it in Apps or Gmail yet. *Jealous*
- rblinne, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4This SO rocks. In order to get decent IMAP support for GMail I've forwarded it to an IMAP account that I have. Now I can save server space on that account. I second the request concerning push and GMail. But that's probably in Apple's hands and not Google's. I have a number of IMAP accounts that support push but don't push on the iPhone. Note that if you use Google's SMTP server your e-mail address with be GMail's despite what you set your From address. Use a different SMTP server if you want to use GMail to store forwarded e-mail for a different account.
- sparced, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4I can't find any enable IMAP option in my Gmail settings. Also must not have it yet.
- samgab, on 10/26/2007, -0/+1Make sure the language is set to US english, not any other language. That must be the selected language for IMAP Gmail.
- risotto, on 10/29/2007, -1/+4Is IMAP IDLE enabled?
- amenic, on 10/24/2007, -9/+3Why is there no "Mail" app for the Ipod Touch?
- merlin77077, on 10/29/2007, -1/+5Because it is an iPod. How many iPods have email support?
- huntedbyafreak, on 11/01/2007, -1/+4mine does
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/24/2007, -1/+2How many iPods have a web browser? Oh right... the iPod touch.
- BoneStamp, on 10/29/2007, -1/+1It has no mail app because they are trying to value sell to the iPhone. Or you could just hack it and install Mail, like huntedbyafreak probably did.
- merlin77077, on 10/29/2007, -1/+5Because it is an iPod. How many iPods have email support?
- mobilehavoc, on 10/25/2007, -10/+2It's really amazing why people seem to need instructions for some of the most obvious stuff. Hmmm...which folder should I map my 'Sent' to.....I know! 'Sent'!
Seems like blogspam to me...Google's instructions are sufficient and if you can't figure out the folder mapping after that, you shouldn't be using email. - drpcken, on 10/29/2007, -2/+5I really need one to sync with an Exchange server.
- websyndicate, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2Its already better than ever having mulitiple computer and the iPhone this helps alot
- CLShortFuse, on 10/31/2007, -10/+2I thought Apple products were about ease of use. Do we really need an top10 digg article on how to put IMAP on your Apple product?
- RexMaxus, on 10/24/2007, -1/+3Yeah, because gmail only supported POP3 up until (as far as I know) today. IMAP gmail is new and info letting us know it is available is always welcomed.
- CLShortFuse, on 10/31/2007, -2/+1yeah, but there's an article with almost 5000 diggs that said that already: http://digg.com/software/Gmail_gets_IMAP
if you're digging this article solely because it's announcing IMAP for gmail, you're digging the wrong one.
my point still stands. should we start digging up tutorials for outlook, thunderbird, and windows mobile?

- HiddenCanuck, on 10/30/2007, -1/+10Thank you!!
- michaelzoradi, on 07/11/2008, -2/+10Why would this comment get dugg down? I'm a huge Apple fan but it's helpful for Pocket PC users to use a tutorial as well. Come on guys....
- jasonpearce, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1Thanks guys. Alex commented on my site that while Google didn't offer a Pocket PC tutorial on their "Supported Client List," they do provide instructions (without screen shots) under "Configuring your client," which is found here: https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answ ...
- DD00, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1Anyone know why my Gmail wouldn't be syncing? I have it all set on my iPhone and Mail, but when I delete a message it just comes right back into my mail inbox. If I delete it from my iPhone it's gone, but it doesn't delete from the server or from my Mail.
I have tons of unread messages from using Gmail pop in Mail for so long, not being able to delete them isn't too fun. If anyone has any idea what might be causing this please let me know. - jd33, on 10/25/2007, -7/+1How to POP GMAIL into IPAP? WHAT?!
What's an iPhone? WTF?- brycelb, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1Do you take that act on the road?
- tbenathan, on 10/25/2007, -0/+8IMAP still not activated for me :( My iPhone is sad.
- davesawyer, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2Has anyone made the transition from POP to IMAP in Apple Mail? What's the better option to avoid duplicate emails on my Mac: 1) adding an IMAP account version of Gmail to Apple Mail, or 2) changing the original account from POP to IMAP?
- isdereks, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1I simply started over. Trashed my entire POP account in Mail and started fresh. Initially I worried about the time it would take to download all archived mail. Fortunately, it looks like Mail grabs the headers for emails waiting to download the entire content until you actually try and view a message.
- davesawyer, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2OK, thanks. That's what I thinking about doing, as soon as I actually get IMAP. I guess there's no advantage to keeping all the old downloaded messages when they're all on the Gmail server anyway.

- tocksin, on 10/25/2007, -9/+4Google really screwed this up. Some users have IMAP and some users don't. Way to cause confusion, frustration, and disappointment with everyone who doesn't. If they at least had an explanation of who gets it and when everyone will get it, then I could understand, but this lack of information is totally unacceptable.
- isdereks, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5Gmail has always been this way rolling out new features. Some accounts get features before others. Google keeps accounts on different servers so it is slowly making upgrades to different groups.
- raynar, on 10/25/2007, -0/+7it takes awhile to push it out, *****. just like their size increase. my gmail went to 4gb near the announcement, and my google apps just went last week. go outside, it'll probably be active when you get back.
Outside is where the "big light" is, if you didnt know. - afireinside0016, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4this is free, stop bitching. they will make it work for everyone eventually. they probably unlock it in order of who signed up for gmail first....so you just gotta wait your turn.
- moisie, on 10/25/2007, -0/+7Yeah, totally unacceptable, I want my money back.
- BoneStamp, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1Adding new features in waves is a good way to find scaling problems and correct them while they're moderate and only affect some people before they are severe and affect everyone. This is totally acceptable and appreciated.
- systimax, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4Will this stop the sent mail showing up as a unread new email in the inbox on the iPhone?
- isdereks, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3Yes. That annoying sent mail as new mail while using POP is not an issue with IMAP.
- BoneStamp, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1Yes, it will stop that. You can also set your POP3 settings to archive an email after it has been downloaded to your iPhone... which could be useful until IMAP is setup on your gmail account.
- EcoEric, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Sign out and sign back in; mine was enabled after that.
- lpiepiora, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2I had to change my language settings from Polish to English(US), and then it begun to work (I know that it sounds ridiculous).
- turquoisefish, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1That makes sense, English(US) get all new features first. Before English(UK) even which is annoying.
- tdp05, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1That worled for me. I should have read through before "me tooing" up top and saying that tit wasn't enabled on my account.

- xoineg, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2i think you have to be using google apps to get the upgrade. All my accounts that i was using google docs have IMAP, but all other ones are not.
- isdereks, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1Not true. I am using Google Hosted for two other accounts and neither have IMAP with the exception of my personal domain.
- thebrawl, on 10/25/2007, -8/+3Step 1: Place iPhone in hand (can be right or left)
Step 2: Hold hand vertically over waste basket or other trash receptacle
Step 3: Open hand- BoneStamp, on 10/31/2007, -0/+71. Put hands on keyboard
2. Submit iPhone bashing comment
3. Return to text messaging on 1-9 pad or thumbwheeling your way through a webpage in a crappy fixed width browser while listening to nothing in the headphones that don't plug into your blackberry.

-- - spazzcat, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Does anyone know if this will work for hosted accounts with gmail?
- isdereks, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1This will work with Hosted Accounts. My email accounts are Google Hosted accounts using my personal domains.
- spazzcat, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1good, they just haven't turn it my hosted account yet then

- isuldor, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Attachments cannot be "detached" using IMAP. I thought it would be nice to save my attachments locally, while keeping the original messages archived. Unfortunately even if you detach an attachment with Thunderbird, it remains attached in Gmail. Bummer.
- hayden.evans, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2is there any way to opt not to sych all mail or starred?
- Wonotch, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1this is really driving me nuts too...

- tsheley, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1If you map the All Mail folder to your Trash in Mail.app everything you delete is sent to the Archive in GMail.
- mysticjim, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2ugh! it's not available on my gmail hosted account, but it is for my brother and his wife. and we're all on the same gmail hosted domain. ah well, all good things to those who wait I suppose...
- Scotepi, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2doesn't work in 10., apple has a gmail profile that automatically adds as pop :(
you need to start off by using a fake email address - Mordieu, on 10/25/2007, -0/+0I need some help here. What do you set up in the imap path prefix in the advanced set up on the iphone. Someone said to set it up to [gmail], but then the syncing with gmail server was not working anymore, then i set it back to /, but now i am ending up with so many mailboxes, I don't how to erase them...

- Littleluk, on 11/19/2007, -0/+0I get every message shown twice. When I get a message it appears as unread in my inbox but as well in the "All Mail" folder. So if I read it in the Inbox, it is not marked as read in the "All Mail" folder.
