- hanapbuhay, on 10/29/2007, -2/+83Nice write-up, but first I need IMAP enabled on my Gmail account. I'm hoping by Friday 6pm, their roll out is complete.
- OneManArmy, on 10/29/2007, -1/+37Google has posted a video how to setup up IMAP on the iphone here http://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en/about_wha ...
- DangerStepp, on 10/31/2007, -3/+33It's articles like this that push me closer and closer to getting an iPhone. It's a sign, I tell you!
- ORiONXxX, on 10/31/2007, -1/+29awesome, now all i need is an iphone
- Aereo, on 11/01/2007, -0/+26Be careful: If you set the Deleted Mailbox to [GMAIL] > Trash on the server, it will delete your mail instead of archiving it.
To archive your mail from the iPhone, set the Deleted folder to "Deleted" on your iPhone. When you delete a mail message on the iPhone, it will be sent to the "Deleted" folder on your iPhone and to the Archive on your GMail account. - TomFrost, on 10/25/2007, -3/+27Dear lord I am sick of moronic haters posting this *****. It's $399, it's unlockable to work on many different services, and -- here's the clincher -- AT&T is actually very good depending on your region. I'm in the US. I'd never get Verizon because they cripple the hell out of everything they sell and charge for the most inane services, Sprint/T-Mobile have extremely spotty coverage where I live, but AT&T gives me a strong signal most everywhere. My iPhone with the iPhone data plan is hundreds of dollars cheaper than a Blackberry with a Blackberry data plan over the course of two years.
But please. Keep bitching about something you know nothing about to make yourself feel all warm and tingly inside. - dark1152, on 10/25/2007, -1/+17I use Mail.app simply to have a single place where I can access all of my mail for multiple accounts. Having to go to 3 or 4 different web sites just to check for new messages gets very old, very quickly. Plus, I do need to get to old emails when I am offline sometimes as well. Of course, I also think the Google 'design scheme' is ugly as sin. Quick to load, but considering I spent the money on the mac, means that I like shiny things etc.
- TomFrost, on 10/25/2007, -0/+15All PUSH IMAP actually does is holds a connection with the IMAP server. Usually an extension in the server is activated and it stops timing out your connection, so when a new mail comes in it sends a notice and your mail client gets it. Pretty simple, really. The iPhone is a bit different, though -- I set my iPhone up to connect to my own personal PUSH IMAP server, and it didn't push. There's apparently something set up by AT&T specific to Yahoo that allows it to work with them.
Not a stupid question, though :) I was thinking the same thing. - Ireland, on 10/25/2007, -0/+15I wonder why you chose that specific time? :P

- recover82, on 10/31/2007, -1/+14The pink has to do with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
- TomFrost, on 10/25/2007, -1/+11Did ya'll miss where I said it's regional? Yes, AT&T is a huge conglomerate who stole government broadband funding and is trying to control the world and is inherently evil. I get that. But in my area, they're the only provider with good signal that doesn't cripple their phones. So keep insulting me and telling me all about how I'll buy anything when I've clearly made the only acceptable choice for where I live.
"hurr hurr AT&T is horrible and you're stupid for saying otherwise and I have no reasoning to back it up in your case" - tdp05, on 10/25/2007, -0/+9yea, no IMAP on my account either.
- ramshaw, on 10/27/2007, -1/+10Damn this was quick, my Gmail doesn't even support IMAP yet.
- HiddenCanuck, on 10/30/2007, -1/+10Thank you!!
- michaelzoradi, on 07/11/2008, -2/+10Why would this comment get dugg down? I'm a huge Apple fan but it's helpful for Pocket PC users to use a tutorial as well. Come on guys....
- jasonpearce, on 10/29/2007, -7/+15For Microsoft Pocket PC users, I created a tutorial (with screen shots) on how to configure Gmail's IMAP interface here: http://jasonpearce.com/blog/2007/10/24/gmail-imap- ...
- tbenathan, on 10/25/2007, -0/+8IMAP still not activated for me :( My iPhone is sad.
- raynar, on 10/25/2007, -0/+7it takes awhile to push it out, *****. just like their size increase. my gmail went to 4gb near the announcement, and my google apps just went last week. go outside, it'll probably be active when you get back.
Outside is where the "big light" is, if you didnt know. - bram, on 10/26/2007, -7/+14YUCK, someone spilt pepto on that site.
- DJRayne, on 10/25/2007, -1/+8Your right. Where I live AT&T coverage is very bad but if I lived elsewhere I may feel different.
- kaplanfx, on 10/25/2007, -0/+7I think it was a rhetorical question, note the smiley face (with tongue)
- moisie, on 10/25/2007, -0/+7Yeah, totally unacceptable, I want my money back.
- BoneStamp, on 10/31/2007, -0/+71. Put hands on keyboard
2. Submit iPhone bashing comment
3. Return to text messaging on 1-9 pad or thumbwheeling your way through a webpage in a crappy fixed width browser while listening to nothing in the headphones that don't plug into your blackberry. - TomFrost, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6Was anyone claiming that it was? This has nothing to do with an advancement in the iPhone, this is about Gmail rolling out IMAP access, and how to set it up properly. The iPhone didn't change or do anything special.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/27/2007, -0/+6Great, another reason for trolls to post annoying comments about how much they hate the iPhone and iPhone stories instead of just ignoring them and moving on.
- DangerStepp, on 10/25/2007, -1/+7I already have AT&T as well. Forutunately enough, I have never had any issues with coverage or reception. I'm fairly happy; so purchasing an iPhone wouldn't be that big of a leap.
- etandrib, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5Aero (below) says the following:
Be careful: If you set the Deleted Mailbox to [GMAIL] > Trash on the server, it will delete your mail instead of archiving it.
To archive your mail from the iPhone, set the Deleted folder to "Deleted" on your iPhone. When you delete a mail message on the iPhone, it will be sent to the "Deleted" folder on your iPhone and to the Archive on your GMail account. - etandrib, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5I have the iPhone but still no IMAP access (on my main account). Maybe we should switch. Wait. No. Nevermind.
- isdereks, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5Gmail has always been this way rolling out new features. Some accounts get features before others. Google keeps accounts on different servers so it is slowly making upgrades to different groups.
- isdereks, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5This is actually the correct method. Why would you want to set Deleted Mailbox to Deleted on your iPhone which would archive the email in Gmail? If you're deleting a message, don't you want it gone from your account. Drop the email into [Gmail] All Mail if you want it archived.
- NoNamesLeft, on 10/26/2007, -0/+5Nice article but... pink enough?
- Modano, on 10/24/2007, -1/+6Sometimes it's handy to have an offline backup and use a native app. If you're working on several things at once or doing a lot of formatting, for instance. Or on a plane. Mail.app will feed into spotlight which is pretty nice too.
- raynar, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5its on my gmail, but not my google apps yet.
- jackyyll, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5One of my accounts does, but it's not my main account. How stupid.
- nbeighley, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5Another option, if you want the messages to be deleted, is to keep 'Deleted Mailbox to [GMAIL] > Trash on the server, and if you want to archive a message, drop it into the 'All Mail' box...it will be removed from the inbox and archived.
- prth8machine, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5Granted.
- rblinne, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4This SO rocks. In order to get decent IMAP support for GMail I've forwarded it to an IMAP account that I have. Now I can save server space on that account. I second the request concerning push and GMail. But that's probably in Apple's hands and not Google's. I have a number of IMAP accounts that support push but don't push on the iPhone. Note that if you use Google's SMTP server your e-mail address with be GMail's despite what you set your From address. Use a different SMTP server if you want to use GMail to store forwarded e-mail for a different account.
- merlin77077, on 10/29/2007, -1/+5Because it is an iPod. How many iPods have email support?
- geoken, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4I use gmail almost like an exchange server. I don't particularly prefer it's interface to Outlook (not to say it has a bad interface, just saying outllok's is better). I use Gmail for a couple of reasons.
1. Gmail lets me redirect my email to their mail servers (I don't mean redirect at an email level but at the mx nameserver level). Gmails mail servers are more robust than my web hosts servers and their web based client (gmail) destroys my ISPs web based client (horde).
2.Gmail lets me use their SMTP server, this alliviates the need to constantly change SMTP servers between work, home and the road (most ISP's will not allow mail to be sent using someone elses SMTP server, or perhaps it's the other way around and ISP's SMTP servers wont accept mail if the user isn't on their network. Either way it amounts to the same thing, I need to change my SMTP server every time I change locations.)
3. Keeping the mail on Gmail and having my outlook clients connecting to Gmail lets me keep mail sync'd. - tdp05, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4i love mine, even using web mail to check my gmail. I know the blackberry and other smartphones do the same thing, but the design and simplicity of use reaaly make a difference.
I show people the phone, show them how to zoom in and out and the finger swipe to navigate, as those are the only things that aren't obvious as you play with the phone. Never having picked it up, people can listen to music, browse the web, and browse pictures with a 15 second tutorial. Having played with blackberry's several times, I still don't know how to do anything with them. - etandrib, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4I don't think they are offering the "push" standard of IMAP like they do with Yahoo. I could be wrong but I doubt they are. IMAP-P or P-IMAP isn't very broadly accepted.
- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4This explains why my yahoo email doesn't push on to my hacked iPhone that's using T-Mobile, I couldn't figure out why that wasn't working it was driving me nuts.
- afireinside0016, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4this is free, stop bitching. they will make it work for everyone eventually. they probably unlock it in order of who signed up for gmail first....so you just gotta wait your turn.
- MikeyisaFag, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4I still wish there was a way to Archive directly from Mail or the iPhone, anyone have any suggestions?
- colto, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Maybe you can setup some type of mail filter that takes all of your "read" emails and moves them into Archive whenever you login? I haven't ever really tried anything like this so I am not sure how powerful Google's filtering is in GMail but it's worth a shot.
- isdereks, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3Yes. That annoying sent mail as new mail while using POP is not an issue with IMAP.
- EcoEric, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Sign out and sign back in; mine was enabled after that.
- mysticjim, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3finally got IMAP today! me so happy! :D
- spazzcat, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Does anyone know if this will work for hosted accounts with gmail?
