- quomen, on 12/28/2007, -3/+14Here's a much better explanation.
http://www.touchdev.net/wiki/Jailbreak_1.1.2
Worked quickly and painlessly for me. - tech42er, on 12/28/2007, -0/+9So your idea of education is: "I know how to do it, so ***** those who don't"? Not everyone knows how to jailbreak an iPhone, so this is a good resource, particularly since many people just received iPhones or iPod Touches over the holidays.
- kertong, on 12/28/2007, -0/+7With scummvm and mobilescrobbler on my jailbroken iphone, I have no desire whatsoever to upgrade my 1.1.1 firmware. I know people have been waiting on Apple to provide exchange/mms/ichat/landscape orientation outside safari/flash/cut and paste/etc, but each update has been dissapointing with no real features/functionality being added - only roadblocks to jailbreaks.

http://modmyifone.com/wiki/index.php/Getting_Start ... - MuTeD, on 12/28/2007, -1/+7Install Customize after you jailbreak it.
- trvr, on 12/28/2007, -1/+7Steve Jobs, is that you?
- mywhitenoise, on 12/28/2007, -1/+7huh? 2%!? Where the ***** did you get that statistic? Judging by how popular that mp3 player is, I'd be more willing to say that only 2% DON'T have it.
- zeeky, on 12/28/2007, -1/+6even steve jobs knows this is not true. when your jailbreak your iPone with jailbreakme, it patches the tiff exploit, just like apple did in 1.1.2.
also, you can now jailbreak 1.1.2 with OktoPrep. mlwarrior --> owned - SharkyTech, on 12/28/2007, -1/+5Theres "ZERO" risk of bricking it. Nothing this tutorial outlines does anything that can't be fixed with a restore. Why can't we wait? Because we paid for the hardware now, and we want to be able to use it to its full potential now, besides, when Apple finally does deliver on an SDK their control over the process will still mean that they'll be able to pick and choose what apps are allowed on their platform. If you don't want to do it, fine, no-ones going to begrudge you for it, but the rest of us are perfectly comfortable with it.
- starkruzr, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Buried for being patently wrong.
@HolyChimp: It's not even that much of a pain in the ass. - likwidfuzion, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3With the SDK, you might even have to PAY for the apps. Whereas right now, you can get all the native apps (save a couple) for free. Also, most of the native apps are open source as well.
People who claim that a jailbreak will brick their iPhone has:
1. Never tried it themselves (Obviously)
2. Has no clue what the Restore button in iTunes is - Chirp08, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3I must say I could have used this Christmas day as I browsed the web to no end to find a simple tutorial on this for my new iPod touch. Talk about bitch, sure there was tons of info out there, eventually I found a great guide that provided everything including the links to download both firmwares. I thought having to downgrade then upgrade was going to be a bitch but it went smooth as pie. BTW in case you were wondering how to transfer files (NES roms in my case) to your Jailbroken iPod grab any ftp program, set the mode to SFTP, use root for the username, and whatever password you set for ssh, easy as pie.
btw I've yet to play a song or video on my ipod touch, so far its been nothing but NES and iPhysics, soo addicting.. - quomen, on 12/28/2007, -1/+4I have a question: Is there any way to organize the order of the icons in a jailbroken ipodtouch/fone?
- noahhoward, on 12/28/2007, -2/+5Fair warning, when the next firmware update comes out you may experience compatibility issues that could vary in severity. I think most jailbreakers offer a way to restore the phone to factory state, but you may want to wait until February if you're worried about having a bricked phone.
- jim3008, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2damn, i thought i could play fallout on my ipod...
- TheWorm, on 12/28/2007, -1/+3I jailbroked (jailbreaked?) my 16 gig touch yesterday. It works great now, but I worked through some trial and error first. A good tutorial would have been nice. I must say, I definitely would NOT have bought a touch if i wasn't able to jailbreak. Jobs and company need to embrace this kind of development. It will bennefit their sales.
- Mike89, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Jailbroke..?
- Codee, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Don't have an iPhone/iPodTouch but that article makes me want one.
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1well there are hundreds perhaps even thousands of third party apps available to jailbroken touches/iphones and every single one of them costs nothing, so why would i want to pay for something i can get elsewhere for free because someone else has coded it and decided they deserve paid for the effort?
- kreatre2007, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1I hope the tutorial comes with a warranty because Apple won't cover it if you break your phone.
- nanboya, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1This was a pretty easy walk-through to follow:
http://macbit.net/hardware/jailbreak-ipod-touch
The only downside to jailbreaking is having to possibly downgrade to 1.1.1 and upgrade factory condition without the jailbreak once 1.1.3 is released. - inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1i bought mine in december and i hacked it quite easily, so your wrong my friend
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1if you DO some how brick the ipod, itunes has a lovely function called "Restore" which restores it to factory setting, works everytime ;-)
unless of course your a moron who cant click a button - traffexone92, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1This really seems simple and I will have to try on my iPhone. I did have the install.apps installed but upgraded from 1.1.1 without knowing that it would reset my modified iPhone. Bummer. Thanks for the link.
- HolyChimp, on 12/28/2007, -2/+3My UK bought 1.1.2 iPhone begs to differ. Just gotta downgrade then jailbreak, upgrade and jailbreak again.
Impossible? No.
Pain in the Ass? Oh yes. - Brenner14, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1You can do the same with Summerboard, I have 5 as well.
- sunroom, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1I upgraded to 1.1.2 after experiencing constant crashes with 3rd party apps and am glad to have the stability. Little improvements like bringing up favorites or ipod controls by double tapping the home button are awesome and I use them all the time.
- directive0, on 12/28/2007, -1/+2Next time don't click on it, whiny mcwhinerston.
- UnknownVariable, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1TouchDev.net has *always* been down, every time I try to go to it. Is it down permanently? How long has it been down, anyway?
- likwidfuzion, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Well, there is a PSX emulator...
- kreatre2007, on 12/28/2007, -1/+1OMG!!! PAY for apps? That's so incredible and totally new. I can't believe that developers who work their asses off to provide software for us actually expect to be paid. That's so ***** up.
And by the way... I'm an Apple certified technician and former Apple employee. I had to deal with customers who ***** up their phones because they were too impatient to wait for Apple to allow for third party application development. Since my iPhone is a critical part of my ability to do my job and stay in touch when I'm out in the field, I have no intention of using jailbreak. - drnytmare, on 12/30/2007, -0/+0hell yeah...

- digjam, on 12/28/2007, -1/+1wow i need to try this soon.....meh let me get iphone first.. :D
- Brenner14, on 12/28/2007, -1/+1http://youtube.com/watch?v=Wrzgzd6PjnI
it can also be done using the SummerBoard app, and SSH'ing into your iPod Touch. check out this video for how to do it. you can also use a program called "iOrder" to help speed up the process. - TokenBlack, on 12/28/2007, -0/+0How big is your cat's hard drive? Mine's 250 GB at 7200 rpm. I have dual-booted my cat with Mac OSX86 and Gutsy.
