How To: Use Mac OS X's firewall

freebsd.org — Is OS X secure by default? Yes. But ya can always secure it more with ipfw - the program behind the "Start" button in System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall. But to do so you need to venture into Terminal.app, which people seem to find scary for some reason. Anyway, here's a (not so quick) guide & comprehensive guide on using ipfw.
