- raymon9, on 10/26/2009, -24/+340give you that smug look when you sit down at a starbucks with it
- badqat, on 10/25/2009, -10/+180Since Apple won't produce a product that falls into this niche, it's not surprising that hobbyists have filled the void.
$300 and an hour or two of your time to have a Mac netbook = priceless. - hellengineer, on 10/26/2009, -79/+210the best consumer OS?? WTF.
- borez, on 10/26/2009, -7/+126Does anybody really care that the guy in corner of starbucks is using a mac?
If they do, then they're ***** sad IMO. - kenshin159, on 10/26/2009, -6/+121It's not the OS that can't handle HD it's the processor in the netbook.
- spworm, on 10/26/2009, -6/+96My macbook has cracks and bits of ductape on it.
I could repair it, but people hate you less if your mac doesn't look like it's brand spanking new. - geodebug, on 10/26/2009, -6/+87'Best' is a relative term so don't get your hello kitty thong all twisted up.
Arguing over the best OS is as inane as arguing over the best programming language. But kudos to you for getting outraged over a non-issue. - Amazetbm, on 10/26/2009, -10/+75How about "one of" the best?
- mbraynard, on 10/26/2009, -4/+67Where else am I suppose to write my debut novel and/or screenplay?
- CrispixKingdom, on 10/26/2009, -50/+112I like how the guy who posted this story changed the origional intro paragraph from:
"Here's the pitch: a 10-inch, almost-pocketable computer running Snow Leopard, THE LATEST, GREATEST VERSION OF OS X. It costs just $300. Sound good? Here's how to make your own."
to:
"Here's the pitch: a 10-inch, almost-pocketable computer, running Snow Leopard, THE BEST CONSUMER OS MONEY CAN CURRENTLY BUY. It costs only $300. Sound good? Here's how to make your own."
for his description of it. Who the ***** actually thinks Snow Leopard is the best OS? - macromorgan, on 10/26/2009, -9/+705 hours of battery life, a bad-ass multi-touch trackpad, OpenCL, a 64 bit kernel and the ability to use more than 2 gigs of RAM?
I had Leopard on my machine for months (Dell Mini 9) and loved it so much I bought a MacBook this past weekend. My Mini got the Ubuntu treatment, so now I've got a Win 7 Pro desktop, a Mac laptop, and a Linux netbook. Geek-gasm. - roebeet, on 10/26/2009, -4/+54What works for you doesn't necessary work for others (and vice versa). If Windows works best for you, then use Windows.
- BMcClure937, on 10/26/2009, -7/+56Why the hell would you be running CPU-intensive engineering applications or graphic-intensive games on a NETBOOK?!
Different devices are appropriate for different tasks. And diversity and open-mindedness is a good trait to have... - Elranzer, on 10/26/2009, -9/+56Apparently, 8% of computer users think it's the best.
- borez, on 10/26/2009, -5/+52"which'll do 90% of what a 13-inch MacBook can"
What's the 10% it can't do? - m4csrgh3yk3v, on 10/26/2009, -2/+48dugg for "toilet browsing"
- rpgmakr, on 10/26/2009, -3/+48LOL. Nobody trying to put leopard on a dell mini is going to buy a copy of leopard.
- insidius, on 10/26/2009, -22/+67Perform well.
- jv2k, on 10/26/2009, -5/+46I blame the Mac vs PC adds. Mac is such a smug douche bag and that image comes to mind when they see a person pull out their laptop.
- tomjm5000, on 10/26/2009, -3/+40Priceless? Sounds like it costs $300 and an hour or two of your time.
- Skurt, on 10/26/2009, -1/+34Technically you are not allowed to put OS X on a Non apple computer.
Also the $30 upgrade also works as a full install.
so either way you do it, when you put it on a Dell it isn't right.
...but it works so well.
I put it on a Lenovo S10 and S12 Netbooks last month/week and they work very well. - poonaka, on 10/26/2009, -6/+39@mrBitch: 8.01%, is that better?
- macslut, on 10/26/2009, -3/+34"Who the ***** actually thinks Snow Leopard is the best OS?"
Probably the people who end up reading the rest of the article. Otherwise, it would be "How to put Linux on your Dell Mini 10v" or "How to keep Windows on your Dell Mini 10v" - MrDoug, on 10/26/2009, -1/+31...have a 13" screen.
- udistrictman, on 10/26/2009, -42/+72NONE of the applications I use for engineering purposes can run on OSX. NONE of the games I play can run on OSX. I guess it's the best OS for youtube watchers and photo shoppers.
- geodebug, on 10/26/2009, -25/+53Because its all about you, you, you.
- akeldama, on 10/26/2009, -1/+26Hang on a second... are you suggesting a $600 Mac Mini as an equivalent to a $300 Netbook? Are you smoking crack?
You better factor in the price for a backpack, a UPS and a display. - bradleyland, on 10/26/2009, -3/+26I put a black InCase shell on my Mac so people would stop looking at me like some kind of ***** when I got my laptop out.
- ahtu, on 10/26/2009, -2/+24The same as in Windows, the right click menu
- m0dded, on 10/26/2009, -5/+26Yes, because it meant that about the entire operating system, not just this netbook in particular. Don't be stupid.
- mkriss5681, on 10/26/2009, -2/+22I wish Apple would take notice.
- surferjoemaui, on 10/26/2009, -0/+20Mobile Safari is my #2 browser.
- cyberdork, on 10/26/2009, -0/+19Just that Apple has never ever bothered about disabling 'hacks' in the last couple of YEARS! I ran my first Hackintosh somewhere in 2006.
I just upgraded to 10.6.1 on my brand new €900 Hackintosh, which is faster than its almost identical twin the €3200 MacPro. I get a Geekbench of 10500 on that monster. And seeing 8 "cores" in Activity Monitor on a €900 machine is pretty awesome. - drelyn86, on 10/26/2009, -12/+31run the next security update that "fixes" this hack.
- nwoolls, on 10/26/2009, -2/+20Actually, the submitter didn't change the intro. The original author changed the intro. I read this yesterday on Giz and, at that time, it said what the submitter posted. Read the comments on Gizmodo:
'i know this site is all about opinion and all. but was this really needed?
"running Snow Leopard, the best consumer OS money can currently buy."' - borez, on 10/26/2009, -15/+33I take it you haven't used it then.
- 3mpire, on 10/26/2009, -4/+21i dunno, if i was sitting in subx with a hackintosh next to a bunch of people who paid 10 times as much for the same experience, i'd be one smug *****.
- arfike, on 10/26/2009, -14/+31Whatever you gotta tell yourself to justify spending $1000 more.
- Elranzer, on 10/26/2009, -1/+18It's the Atom processor that chokes on Flash video, not OSX or whatever OS you throw on it.
The Atom sucks. - ProfessorLX, on 10/26/2009, -4/+21"a former win7 user"
lol how long did you try it for 2 weeks? you are obviously a mac fanboy in disguise
fanboy fail. - alpha88, on 10/26/2009, -6/+23Damn, the Windows fanboys are out in full force today.
- BMcClure937, on 10/26/2009, -7/+23List some of these applications that you use on your Windows machine that are not available on a Mac...
I use both OSX, Windows 7 and XP SP3... but I prefer the usability and interface of OSX over other operating systems. This is about personal preference more than anything else.
I agree that if there is a Windows-only application that you cannot go without that you would obviously be limited to using Windows OSes. - udistrictman, on 10/26/2009, -12/+27Yea, I am sure I am the only one in this thread that thinks OSX sucks for applications like Engineering, Business Applications, Gaming, Science, Medical, Network Servers, etc.
- getoffmybridge, on 10/26/2009, -5/+20Match your coat and beret?
- zombiecarlin, on 10/26/2009, -0/+15Johny you are the ***** idiot of the week, hands down.
- macromorgan, on 10/26/2009, -0/+14So you propose making a metaphorical deal with the devil? And by metaphorical I mean actual. And my devil I mean AT&T.
- Elranzer, on 10/26/2009, -4/+181. Windows
2. Mac OS X
3. What's another *consumer* OS? - PhillyMJS, on 10/26/2009, -2/+14Do yourself a favor and find a Vista machine. Open the command window. Type "ver"
You'll see "6.0"
Do the same thing on a machine running Windows 7.
You'll see "6.1"
Now, please explain, in light of this information, how Windows users aren't "paying for a service pack" when they buy an upgrade from Vista to 7.
Also note that the $30 copy of Snow Leopard is a full installer, you don't need to provide any proof you already own a previous version of Mac OS X to get it to install on your machine. - mrBitch, on 10/26/2009, -0/+12@ dcherryholmes, RE: " .. the other thing that annoys me. You can have multiple workspaces on OS X, but you can't just drag a window from one space to another? That's weird, and unhelpful."
What? I think the most annoying thing is you're simply not bothering to learn a few things about the OS you're using.
You most definitely CAN drag a window from one space to another :
http://www.dtgeeks.com/journals/article/mac_os_x_l ...
" .. Moving windows between spaces is simple. You can manipulate window locations while in Spaces overview mode (drag any of the miniaturized windows to any workspace you want)." - roxgod666, on 10/26/2009, -0/+12@synaesthesisx
Do you honestly think your opinion is any less worthless? Nobody gives a ***** about your made up experiences with an OS you never used. -
