- HMMcKamikaze, on 02/21/2009, -13/+126It's not a real Mac if it only costs $400.
- diearzte2, on 02/21/2009, -4/+96"In addition, I think I may have found the perfect toilet computer. No one wants to fight Windows on the throne."
Wow...just wow. - teamgwho, on 02/22/2009, -0/+66"Watching an episode of something in bed without lugging my 15-incher in with me is really nice."
Words can't describe how badly I misread that sentence to mean something entirely different.... - MonkeyFit, on 02/21/2009, -7/+36Not necessarily. On which OS is the best it all comes down to preference and how you intend to use it. It's a subjective matter and saying a certain OS is the best is not necessarily true for everyone.
- se1zure, on 02/22/2009, -0/+25remind me never to touch your netbook
- sfasu77, on 02/21/2009, -3/+24Whats with the hostility? There are plenty of hackintosh builds that outperform equivalent spec'd and higher priced Macs!
- deadbaby, on 02/22/2009, -0/+19Not really an upgrade then...? A downgrade to a more favorable form factor perhaps.
- hustl3r, on 02/21/2009, -5/+24MSI WInd + OS X Hackintosh = FTW.
- cerealjynx, on 02/21/2009, -25/+44After a month of debating whether to upgrade my original white macbook (intel core duo, yeah no 2) to one of the new white macbooks, and aluminum one, or a previous generation of the macbook pro, I have found my answer.
This is gonna be awesome. - ASFx, on 02/21/2009, -25/+40"you can't play any games" - Wrong
"you have to use some hacked up version of Office that may have compatibility issues" - Wrong
"lacks drivers for common hardware" - Wrong
"has an interface nothing like that of other OS'es and brings confusion to new users" - Wrong
"and is all about looking good rather than being functional..." - Wrong
It's funny when people who are incredibly inexperienced with Macs choose to make statements as if they were fact. What's next? Are you going to complain that macs can't right click even though they've been able to for almost a decade? - bmaltais, on 02/22/2009, -0/+15Best darn mac for the buck. I already own an iMac and a MacBook. Bot are constantly used by wife and kids. Bought this Dell during boxing day and carry it around everywhere I go. This little thing is really amazing. Fit in my backpak front pocket, make no noise (no fans), boot faster than my MacBook, goes to sleep faster than a feinting goat and is the perfect companion for my iPhone when I need to connect to the internet via NetShare/PDANet.
- cogit0, on 02/21/2009, -1/+15Dude, if you haven't heard of it, then find out about it. It is the colloquial name for systems that utilize the OS based on OSX86project (see http://www.osx86project.org/)
- zombiecarlin, on 02/22/2009, -2/+15I bring my Ubuntu Mini 9 onto the ***** all the time, then I get a little comfortable working away or watching something and after about 20 minutes or so the wife knock on the door to see if I'm still alive. She probably reckons I'm jerking off, which, on occassion would be correct. The Mini 9 was made for Pornhub.
- lostarchitect, on 02/21/2009, -1/+14it's just a preference thing. i like OSX a lot, but ubuntu is good too and if it's doing what you want, it might be too much of a hassle to switch. on the other hand, if you're familiar with OSX and you like it, it does run very well on these systems so you could give it a whirl and see how it goes.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 02/21/2009, -2/+14scratch GOS and write Ubuntu. Fixed.
- hollywoodphony, on 02/22/2009, -2/+14If Apple sold these, even at their premium (say $7-800), I think they would be a huge hit.
- Hazardc, on 02/22/2009, -1/+12honestly, it depends on which dell you buy. They have put out some lackluster laptops, but I have owned a 700m and a m1530 (what im typing on right now) and they are top notch machines
Granted, I would rather have had an IBM thinkpad back in the day, but honestly the new lenovo ones aren't up to par.
Also, I paid UNDER 1000 shipped for a 2.5Penryn, 4GB, Geforce 8600M, bluetooth, fingerprint, 1680x1050 LG screen (one of the best panels out there), and a nice sized 7200 rpm HD) in a deal last year. This thing is almost a year old and the big deals today still don't touch it for the price.
I honestly think it's built and styled damn well compared o most stuff out there, and I think my 700m was one of the best laptops ever made.
That said, APPLE really builds some above and beyond hardware. It's just not worth paying more than twice what I paid for mine. Maybe if we were talking a few hundred bucks and not numbers that have four digits.
Also, I'm waiting for the mini 10 from dell. I almost just bought a 9, but the 10 will be out soon and is going to be a top tier netbook. The only thing is that the mini 10 is stuck with a static 1GB of ram right now, while the 9 is able to take on 2GB.
Also, check out the dell adamo
http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/09/dell-adamo-hand ...
Also, in the past, dell had some lackluster service. They are now top notch (even if most of it is in India)
If you have an issue, even the smallest thing, they will have someone at your house within 24-48 hours. If you have a part break and want to fix it yourself, they'll overnight you a new one and let you do it yourself, almost no questions asked.
I know I sound like a fanboy, but it just makes sense to me.
That said, I never pay full price, and most of the stuff I've ever bought has been a loss item from them, through pricing errors and keeping track of slickdeals.net - ethana2, on 02/22/2009, -4/+15Ubuntu, you mean. Gentoo is not the best OS, Android is not the best OS, and Rockbox is not the best OS. All of them are linux. Fedora's pretty good, but oft a bit too broken. Suse, well, I don't know what they're doing, I hear it's okay.
If you continue to refer to 'linux' as the best OS, people will continue to be confused about which one to actually use. - Altotus, on 02/21/2009, -11/+22Problem is... It's a Dell. I've owned Dell laptop, and had some at work... They are awfully constructed. Lots of bells and whistles, but held together with cheap plastic and bubble gum. This is like pimping out an AMC Gremlin. Sure, it's funny, maybe even cool in a way. But, dude, it's still a Gremlin.
- UnaClocker, on 02/22/2009, -0/+11Compared to the other Netbooks out there, namely the Eee, Wind, and Aspire One, the Mini9 is built like a tank. It's really got excellent build quality compared to the others. Might be standard Dell quality, but in the $400 computer market, it really shines.
- Rudegar, on 02/21/2009, -1/+12guess if you have an ipod, use itunes a lot
have an appletv
have a lot of airport express to control music around your house
with remote app on your ipod touch/ iphone
or otherwise want to use some apps available for osX but not linux
if not I'd say stick with Ubuntu - MacParrot, on 02/22/2009, -2/+13Even as a Mac user I agree with MonkeyFit. The best OS is the one each individual is most comfortable with
- MacParrot, on 02/22/2009, -0/+10If you have Ubuntu configured in such a way that it's stable and does everything you want to use this computer for, then no it isn't worth it. Unless just trying this out for the geek factor is what you like.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -7/+17News Flash: Apple computers have the exact same components, and just cost more.
Enjoy being Apple's whore. - adml_shake, on 02/21/2009, -8/+17A coworker of mine did this when he got his a few months back, and went back to XP on the thing after a few weeks. He said that it just ran slow and didn't perform as well as he thought it should. He's been happy with XP running on it though.
When I get mine I think it's going to be with Ubuntu. - say592, on 02/22/2009, -1/+10I used a slipstream disk with no problems (MSIWindOSX).
And speaking of the Wind. Much better netbook, much better hackintosh. 'Nuff said. - CalcProgrammer1, on 02/21/2009, -3/+12"you can't play any games" - OK, so I overstated...you still can't play Crysis or most other games on Mac. Sure, SOME companies port their games, but most don't. Either way, Macs still lack many games PC's have. (I'm not talking about Mac hardware running Windows, that is just a Windows machine)
"you have to use some hacked up version of Office..." - I used Office 2008 for Mac and it is a lot different interface-wise from Office 2007 for PC. They changed the interface to make it fit the Mac style rather than keeping it the same across platforms.
"lacks drivers for common hardware" Wrong? No, I admit the others were a bit opinionated, but THIS one is the flat out truth. Mac OSX is fine on Mac hardware, but run it on any other piece of computing equipment and you're in for a tough time. Hacking together video drivers that support your particular card/laptop/etc, dealing with ACPI power issues not turning off the PC correctly, lacking WiFi for common Intel cards, having to reformat your Mac partition because a driver isn't working right, all of these are glaring hardware incompatibilities. Sorry, but Mac OSX has awful hardware compatibility. That's the truth. If you are only considering peripherals, sure, it's fine, most printers/hard drives/etc work fine.
"has an interface nothing like that of other OS'es" - Windows is nothing like Mac, GNOME is nothing like Mac (more similar but still different), KDE is nothing like Mac...<name your favorite OS> is nothing like Mac. The buttons are on the wrong side, the menu bar is fixed at the top of the screen...these are all unique to Mac (apart from addons that make other OS'es work like Mac, but Mac was the first). The problem with the menu bar is if you have two monitors, the menu bar for program on monitor 2 may be on monitor 1...kinda stupid. If you're used to Windows, going to Mac won't be as easy as Mac people want you to think. Then again, same goes for any OS switching, but still, Mac people always claim it is super easy to switch.
"all about good looking" - when your main hardware platform is overpriced due to it's smooth curves, glossy finish, and glowing Apple logo, yeah, it's about looks. A lot of Mac apps are really minimalistic and lack the advanced options that comparable apps have.
You can't argue the hacking fact either. You have to hack it to install it on anything that isn't a Mac.
Also, "it's funny when people who are incredibly inexperienced with Macs choose to make statements as if they were fact"...I clearly stated at the end that it was my opinion. "I'm just stating my opinions that are based on using all 4 OS'es." Where do you get fact from that? - Rekutyn, on 02/22/2009, -0/+8I've been using this setup on my Dell Mini 9 since I received it last October. It's great! The cheapest Mac I will probably ever own!
- chinpo, on 02/22/2009, -0/+8you rhymed
- inactive, on 02/22/2009, -1/+8If they did it would be even more minimal than the air. ie, no ports whatsoever.
- UnaClocker, on 02/22/2009, -1/+8I assume you meant $700-$800.. If so, yeah, I agree.. Apple could sell this exact machine for $800 and sell them faster than they could make them practically.
- scootinger, on 02/22/2009, -0/+7Maybe you could get QVC to air your testimonial? "These Dell Minis are great for porno!"
- avaag, on 02/21/2009, -23/+29I don't believe the OS is that big of a deal on a netbook. Most of my usage seems to be online so I think the browser is a biggest influence on usability.
- rpgmakr, on 02/22/2009, -1/+7It's funny to see the apple fanboys dugg down everybody that don't want to buy a mac for legitimate reasons (Apple don't/won't sell a netbook).
- NathanCH, on 02/21/2009, -2/+8I don't even have a mac.
- poxonyou, on 02/22/2009, -0/+6Hope you have a desktop to use as well. You're not going to be able to do much on it. Netbooks are, well, mainly just for Internet and web apps, or older software. That said, I'm thinking of getting a desktop and a Netbook soon myself and ditching this laptop. Even at 13" it feels a bit too bulky to carry around much, and it's pretty weak as a desktop.
- inactive, on 02/22/2009, -0/+5Until you can pop retail OSX in a Dell and be good to go (without all this hacking hassle), they're not really worried. Remember, they make most of their money from hardware.
- lostarchitect, on 02/22/2009, -0/+5In that case, you might want to give it a whirl. it won't cost you anything. I don't think that on a netbook it has any major advantages over linux, except in the case of someone who uses OSX a lot and is very comfortable with it. It also makes networking easier if you have an all mac setup.
- rageguy, on 02/22/2009, -2/+7I would like to second you opinion regarding Macs and hardware compatibility. I'm currently dual booting Mac OS X and Ubuntu.
Lets see. My laptop
Ubuntu.

Mobile broadband: 3rd party driver
Built in tablet: Works perfectly (tablet edition)
Acpi/Power: 3rd party driver, some out of box support
Scanner/MFC: 3rd party driver, does not work out of box.
Mac OS X's hardware support is terrible by design. It is only designed to run on Apple computers with modern hardware.
Older hardware, older peripherals and non-Apple computers are supported poorly, at best! - cerealjynx, on 02/22/2009, -1/+6After pricing things out I'll probably just wait for the new Mac Mini instead.
- Jibberwalk, on 02/22/2009, -0/+5Start fooling around with Linux. It will eventually make you want to kill someone.
Edit: We know it to be true, my fellow Fedorans. - itseffinkasey, on 02/22/2009, -0/+5You mean like a dumbed down macbook air? maybe.... I think it'll stil cost a bunch.
- ethana2, on 02/22/2009, -0/+5Depends, how much time do you have to screw around with GarageBand? It's pretty fun... but I prefer Ubuntu over OS X myself... but then, I like to do some odd customization sometimes..
- poxonyou, on 02/22/2009, -0/+5Yeah, Dell has tried to improve a bit (especially with their monitors and top-end laptops), bumped their prices up a bit as well. Now they just need to get rid of the goddamn outsourced Indian tech support.
- rebrad, on 02/22/2009, -1/+6Too bad that Apple can't come up with something like this for a reasonable price.
- superherofive, on 02/21/2009, -12/+17Lol it's so funny all the fan boys digging down people excited about the prospect of running OS X on their 'I didn't have to take out a loan' PC's...
Grow up you whiny little *****, and deal with the ever changing world of computers. - ethana2, on 02/22/2009, -0/+4I bought my Dell with Ubuntu and that's just the way I like it.
..I bought my eMac, however, with Panther, and promptly upgraded to Tiger, and it's okay now too...
(but I mainly just use it for screwing around in GarageBand) - lolfantastic, on 02/22/2009, -0/+4Yeah, we all want to waste our hard earned money in todays economy damn it!
- Elranzer, on 02/22/2009, -1/+5"Ubuntu" is Digg's blanket term for "Linux"
- robogobo, on 02/22/2009, -1/+5Actually that's a good point. Sometimes I'd just like a machine with no OS beyond what's necessary to run a VNC application.
