"heres why i didnt digg it, bla bla bla.
No digg".
WE DONT CARE WHY YOU DIDNT DIGG THE STORY!
Just move on to the next one. Jeez. - einsteindesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@freetron, eddied007, chicken101...
Don't forget, there are lots of moms & dads out there with new iMacs and Minis.
Everything's relative. - Wings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1asdren - MacOS defrags on-the-fly. If anything, a defragger like Diskwarrior might make a slight difference by reorganizing all similar classes of items on your drive into contiguous sections - not the same as a defrag but close. All systems stuff first, then apps next, user data next, etc. What makes OSX really fly (other than gobs of RAM) is to get a 2nd drive identical to the stock drive and configure them in a stripped RAID, which is built into the OS.
- missusdee2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Diggnationdevon, thanks. I've already decided when I buy my PowerBook to upgrade to the 1GB of RAM, at least...
- TC-14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How the hell could an article like this recieve over 170 diggs? Its full of crap! Makes me wonder if people are actually reading it or just digging it coz its apple.
- nanboya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even with 1.5GB of RAM, my G5 does paging out to the order of 259174/51632; way above the amount stated in this article but I don't notice anything too laggy.
- Xcoded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg, just plain silly…
- madmacx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who is digging this and why would anyone even post this on digg?
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1OS X is a good OS people, not much to improve lol. RAM definetly helps.
- asdren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More RAM. No DIGG.
BTW, do the Mac defrag programs actually make a difference?
a friend swears by DiskWarrior but I was under the impression that OS X doesn't really need to be defragged. - kasperoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"gosh, that was SOOOO anti-climatic, no digg" -- freetron
I could not agree with you more - grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0handy for new users, not so handy for other users. Ill digg it anyway
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is mostly common sense, but two points I must make:
1) If you run your system with very little free memory on the HD, even briefly, when Photoshop creates a giant temp file, it will corrupt your system and you'll need to reinstall. I am in the middle of this pain-in-the-ass process.
2) From what I've been told by Apple techs, the OS automatically defrags, so there is no need to run defrag utilities after the fact. Also a reason why Macs continue to perform similarly to their install speed months and even years after the last install/reinstall - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0here's one for you: clean up and organize all the icons on your desktop
- Wings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Don't install too many application" .... huh? Doesn't he really mean "Don't RUN too many applications"? I've got 272 apps "installed" in my Mac but just because they are all sitting there in my apps folder doesn't affect the speed of the computer in any way. I agree with most everyone about this article...no digg.
- astinus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty basic stuff, but a nice 'reality check' nonetheless. I've put 1.5GB of memory into my Powerbook, and it does seem to run a bit faster than with the default 512MB for sure!!
- scorpius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ram is cheap, maxed out my iBook @ 1.25G before first boot. Reboot once in a blue moon, and run disk maintenance once in a while. Super machine.
- qishi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you *really* want to feel better performance, just get forced into using Windows all day. My 2+ GHz PC with XP (couple month old install) feels 50 times slower than my < 500 MHz Mac with OS X.
- MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah, that sucked. More RAM, keep space on your drive, faster drives are better, don't install crap you don't need... That applies to every PC ever created and is already known by 95% of diggers, since this is supposed to be a tech-oriented site.
- pete10203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Come on now, i've already been doing that for awile. Restarting once a month is the best advice, actually. And I thought it was common sense that you had to leave some free space on your hard drive. Common sense!
- firebird2110, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yawn! I was hoping for something not totally obvious. No Digg!
- rinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, that was a pointless read. Get more RAM, wow, thanks. No digg.
- qvitex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0the only semi-useful piece of information in that article was the ram check. come on, common sense people.
- TC-14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Come on! That is just stating the obvious. Its commin human logic that in general more RAM and a cleaner hard disk means a faster computer.
No digg I'm afraid. - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ooh we can [block/report] comments now. cool
- DRawkus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Easy = don't install LimeWire or Aquisition.
no digg - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, that stuff was so obvious. *Yawn*
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0And restart once a month!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ok, don't disappoint me Digg trolls. Where are the "MAC SUX" comments?
- moustache2113, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I read all of these comments, yet for some reason still read the article, and learned nothing.
- thegreenarrow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dumb
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Pretty basic if you ask me, which you didn't.
- rilian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0hmm...article suggests nothing new. bigger hardware, more ram, run less apps...the necessary reaction would be.... "DUH!"
out - Sandkat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0All this and more can be found in this month's issue of "DUH!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0oh....no comment editing yet :(
- nucleocide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This article is crap. I only regret accidentally clicking digg it when I wanted to click comment.
- Kvetch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0this was so lame I can't believe it is on the front page and I helped put it there.
- freetron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0gosh, that was SOOOO anti-climatic, no digg
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not much there. Oont oont.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0comment
- vokiel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0lame++
- eddied007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This is lame as all hell. Don't install too many applications? WTF.
