- weasler7, on 12/29/2008, -18/+59apple osx crashes?
- delta013, on 12/31/2008, -17/+49Buried as inaccurate. Mac OS does not crash. Every Mac fanboy says so. Next you'll try to tell us that Mojave is really Vista.
- skemez1, on 12/29/2008, -7/+26Hmmmm... Why doesn't apple just release an update?
- archer75, on 12/31/2008, -6/+23Think different
- MtheoryX, on 12/30/2008, -6/+23Kernel Panics ;p
- thelastcivilian, on 12/31/2008, -15/+30As a Vista user, I have to say I'm actually a little taken aback that OSX has problems with crashing. Mac users often tout their invincibility when it comes to things like the BSOD and virii, and I thought there was something to back it up (and not just the John Hodgman commercials). Guess I was wrong.
- meghalc, on 12/31/2008, -5/+18Kernal Panick is an Apple version of BSOD.
- logpony, on 12/31/2008, -11/+24Same with my PC. Anecdotal evidence doesn't mean ***** when your tagline is that the product "just works." Mine doesn't break but I'll readily admit it can and would if I let it ***** up. So should all you worshipers of the pretty white plastic.
- cthielen, on 12/31/2008, -1/+14No, it's a misleading headline. The deletion is to prevent a software update from stalling (not freezing or crashing, merely not progressing) in the case of a corrupted update download, which 10.5.6 has fixed (presumably checking the consistency of the downloaded update).
- mwalker05, on 12/31/2008, -6/+18or windows 7
- meghalc, on 12/31/2008, -7/+18Mine hasnt crashed either, running Vista Ultimate 32bit :)
- t3hbagel, on 12/31/2008, -23/+33I know, I'm just as shocked as you!
The almighty and perfect Apple OS crashing?! Don't let the Digg fanboys know, their world will come crashing down once they find out Steve Jobs isn't a God after all. - Jeepinator, on 12/31/2008, -4/+13OSX is a very sensitive OS. Apple just doesn't open up much of it to the user. I can't count the number of times I've had Word crash in the middle of something on OSX. It's never happened to me on Windows?
- fuzzynyanko, on 12/31/2008, -0/+9Mine crashed, but I was messing with the CPU bus frequency and was asking for it.
- InfamousAtheist, on 12/31/2008, -0/+8And arrogant...
- inactive, on 12/31/2008, -2/+10I did this, it works great! THANK YOU!
- archer75, on 12/31/2008, -3/+11I have and do use OSX for an extended period of time. OSX Leopard is no more stable than Vista x64. I also find Vista to be more responsive.
I'm sure snow leopard will speed things up. - jeremy217, on 12/31/2008, -17/+25Wow just the other day I was being pounded by two apple fan boys and they were saying "macs never crash", "macs just work" and "macs don't need drivers".
One of them then contradicted themselves because he later said he needed a driver for a Kodak digital camera.
I told them I wouldn't buy a mac because I already have everything I need on my pc and also I wasn't brain damaged.
I love Vista 64bit.. All my apps work better than on XP and I haven't had a crash yet on it. So why switch to mac? Lame! - darkNiGHTS, on 12/31/2008, -4/+11Same here, Vista Home Premium running strong for 7 months now.
- cthielen, on 12/31/2008, -3/+10The article mentions not understanding why deleting /Library/Updates will solve the issue and that Apple hasn't explained it ... except they have (excellent journalism!). Shortly after 10.5.6, Apple released this information saying a corrupt download of the update would cause the configuration error, and deleting /Library/Updates (the cache of the download) would force a re-download which in all probability, wouldn't be corrupted again. PCWorld: -1.
- xptoast, on 12/31/2008, -2/+8You become sheltered, expensive and obnoxious?
- Markers, on 12/31/2008, -1/+7I hope you die in a car fire.
- bbardlbradd, on 12/31/2008, -2/+8Found the douche^
Seriously though, rather than playing as linux's advertisement team, why don't you go compile something worth-while so that people will seek it out themselves rather than have it pushed on them? - spdorsey, on 12/31/2008, -0/+6I have 12 GB also. It's quite common.
- ShyGuy91284, on 12/31/2008, -0/+6That inability for Mail to exit was pissing me off, but 10.5.6 seems to have fixed it. I think it was related to my compulsive hoarding of old email, and has been a problem for a while. Can't say I've really had enough full system crashes for me to remember them though.
- Cattywampus, on 12/31/2008, -0/+5Brilliantly insightful comment!
- Seidoger, on 12/31/2008, -0/+5An OS X kernel panic is so beautifully displayed though, i must admit!
- iambrucenolan, on 12/31/2008, -1/+6Yup, it worked great, my Mac is now as fast as XP
thank you! - iambrucenolan, on 12/31/2008, -0/+5You need Viagra to be installed before you can work with it....
- ism70605, on 12/31/2008, -0/+5Apparently someone that knows nothing came through here and buried us. OS X is BSD, if you need clarification. That is the point I was making.
- spdorsey, on 12/31/2008, -0/+5Give up the apple bashing. Use your OS of choice and realize that there's no perfect technology from any company.
- mstrebe, on 12/31/2008, -1/+5MAC OS DOES NOT SUFFER FROM BSOD!
The screen is Grey, and it's sensitive to readers of multiple languages. - iambrucenolan, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4You have 12 GB memory?
Sure you are not using a super computer? - kreatre2007, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4Several problems with Vista were not fixed for months -- nearly a year actually.
Here is Microsoft's own list of fixes in Vista Service Pack 1:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc70961 ...
When Apple released the latest version of Mac OS X at the end of October 2007, they quickly followed up with a bug fix (10.5.1 update) just over 2 weeks later and they have consistently released updates since then. This is not to say that Microsoft does not do the same. However, both Vista and XP were very problematic upon their initial release whereas Mac OS X typically is not been. I have personally rolled out several Vista loaded PCs and I was part of large upgrade to XP in late 2001. I remember a lot of issues with XP that it took months for MS to fix. Vista was originally meant to be a really big change from the previous versions of Windows but instead, it turned out to be not much more than an enhanced feature set and a major disappointment for consumers. Apple has the loyalty of what you derisively call "fanboys" for a reason. We love the Apple brand because Apple designs and builds the best computers and the best operating system on the market. - meghalc, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4BSOD is not only kernal panic..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Screen_of_Death - Ubermann, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4same here
- dcolley, on 12/31/2008, -1/+5This had to do with a limited number of users experiencing a problem with an OS X update, which was fixed almost immediately. Not, an everyday problem, like windows users experience and which are rarely fixed for months. Why would this be picked up on PCWorld, they know nothing about Macs?
- douggmc, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4Just because you asked to be buried ... I'm digging you up. Oh yeah .. and because you are a douche too.
- mwalker05, on 12/31/2008, -3/+7indeed. i guarantee that after doing this you will never have another problem with the computer unless you do something stupid like change the OS. also battery life will sky rocket.
- inactive, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4There are plenty of maintenance apps available you dick.
- craterburnsu, on 12/31/2008, -1/+5My Macbook Pro (bought in June) has only had a Kernel Panic once, when i accidentally started both parallels and VMWare Fusion, both trying to start my bootcamp partition.
Apps crash all the time, but at least the OS stays relatively stable. I know someone who teaches an AV class at a high school with a room of Aluminum iMacs and they get kernel panics every so often, using final cut and so forth. - designerutah, on 12/31/2008, -1/+5I don't know about you people, but I get so tired of the fanboy/hater comments whenever there's an article about Windows, Linux, OS X. It's an operating system! You don't like it, don't use it. But get over yourselves. They all have their strong points. AND their flaws. Which is why some people find one better than the other for their needs. None of them are perfect. And non of them are so much better than the others that EVERYONE should use it. Your fan/hater comments do nothing except stir up and old, tired argument. Give it a rest already. Sometimes the rampant trolling makes me feel like I'm in junior High again. "Our team's best! Our team's best!!!"
If you love your operating system, fine! Nothing wrong with that. Same with your hardware. But do you have to go into the comments of a story about another OS and post hater comments just to stir up trouble? What are you, 12? You KNOW you're not going to convince anyone. AND you're not going to make any real world differences for your "team." So what exactly are you accomplishing? Proving that you're a douche nozzle? Why not just avoid articles about an OS you don't us or even dislike? Take a breath, and resist the temptation to be a jerk. Just walk away. See what happens if even 10 percent of the rampant fan/hater comments go away.
Sorry for the rant, but I've looked at 3 stories today, one each per oerating system and they're always the same. "Just delete it/take it back and get a real computer!" - archer75, on 12/31/2008, -2/+6I have vista x64, windows 7 and OSX all on my PC so I can test them all. Take that!
- archer75, on 12/31/2008, -2/+6Of course it's Vista. It's built right on it. Though there is FAR more than eye candy.
One might say Leopard is Tiger with some new eye candy, but we know there is more to it. - inactive, on 12/31/2008, -1/+5Just works - well mine does - 3 year old G5 imac, upgraded from tiger to leopard, now on 10.5.6 - never had a crash in 3 years.
- MonkeyFarts, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4Actually, there are several maintenance apps out there for OS X that do exactly this. My favorite is OnyX.
- 5urr3al5am, on 12/31/2008, -3/+7Mac's Crash? bb-bbb--bbutttt the commercials tell me that I should LOVE THEM and hate Windows!
- roxgod666, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4What works great...your keyboard?
- 017648, on 01/01/2009, -0/+3ok, now being a person who uses terminal daily and who knows not to do this,
THIS IS PLAIN MEAN.
For all you idiots who will do it it simply removes all your files.
'nuff said. -
