- jaderobbins, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29Agreed. They also forgot one of the best ipod interfacing programs i've used: amarok for linux.
- zumpiez, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28***** guys, look out, we have offended the branding goblin
- NoOneButMe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24Where's ephPod, Winamp, iPod Access, etc? These seem like random programs found in the middle of the internet's pool of random (free/share)ware app's, not by popularity / usage..
- camintmier, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24I personally like YamiPod. It can be run directly installed on the iPod, and it's PC, Mac, and Linux.
- tallonx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16than** :P
- SkyFire360, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18ml_ipod + winamp = no need for bloaty software
(or ml_ipod + fubar2000 ;) - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14This article should be titled "How to use THREE programs to replace i-Tunes".
- rebopper, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12This may be a naive question, (I don't own an iPod) but is it not recognized as an external drive when connected to a Windows PC?
- GoodDamon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Yeah, amarok is kick-ass. Never used an easier interface.
- trollick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9What kind of breakthrough in computer sciences is required to allow to put files on iPod just by dragging?
- sedawk, on 10/11/2007, -8/+17Am I the only digger who things iTunes is not that bad?
- Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Winamp has always been for llamas.
- fishinabarrel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9@ rebopper
Yes, but you can't simply throw mp3s onto the ipod in an windows explorer window and expect it to work. You require a software to talk
to the Ipod (Itunes or one of the programs mentioned here).
Personally my choice is media monkey, it has done everything I have wanted to do without any of the hassle of Itunes (multiple PC support, ad free, etc). I have only used it with a PC and only for music (not used it for video nor for pod casts etc) but I do love it. - Repiv, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11You do know AOL has owned Winamp since 1999, right? It isn't like it just happened...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7They forgot gtkPod and rythmbox too :)
- FleetAdmiral, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9@ rebopper, yes
- EllasIsKing, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9WinAMP does everything Itunes does and much, much more. (unfortunately its owned by AOL and will soon become junkware like iTunes)
- neodorian, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10Ditto Winamp and Amarok. iTunes won't be found on any of my computers.
- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Windows Media Player plugin
http://www.mgtek.com/dopisp/ - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4These apps all suck. iTunes 7 may be a resource hog like Firefox and Vista, but it's the best (albeit slow) method for using an iPod.
- BradleyBo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8It's not that bad. But then again, it's not that good...
- freehunter, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I have an iPod mini, and I've always had to use iTunes...
- bedrock, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I second that notion. It's updated quite often and you can use it to submit your played tracks to last.fm.
- djrbx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Where's MediaMonkey?
- Balanced, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6That would be iTunes... It handles normal MP3s, AACs, etc. you know...
- chadel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3FFFFFFF,00000002,
- dbr_onix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"but is it not recognized as an external drive when connected to a Windows PC?"
To ebalborate on fishinabarrel's comment, when you transfer music onto the iPod, it needs a iPod Libary.xml file created as well as the music files, with a list of files/titles etc, otherwise it would need to scan all ~80GB of music files to display the Artist/Album/Song lists with proper ID3 tags, which would be horribly slow and bad for the harddrive and battery life..
Anyway, for some reason iTunes wont transfer music to my iPod, it gives an error every ~20 songs and stops (The iPod is ~4 years old now), Anapod Explorer worked, but isn't free, I never though about trying Winamp or, now I know about it, the Foobar2000 plugin (foo_pod) - Away to try that now
http://yuo.be/wiki/dop:start # The Foobar2k plugin for iPod support,
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t19156-2050.html # Currently the latest page in the thread for said plugin - radaneo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4ml_iPod (for Winamp) does the job for me. It's a 3rd-party plugin, which is the original iPod plugin.
http://mlipod.sourceforge.net/ - sshhaammss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3so which program is it that DOESNT have album and artist sorting cuz even winbloze meja pleyur can be coaxed into that! winamp: alt+ L
- timro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3No digg because I can't stand bloggers who type their blog posts like they're instant messaging.
- quade, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3You know, every time I see an article that promises that I can use my iPod without iTunes, it always just substitutes iTunes for something else. And there's already a million other MP3 programs out there. I think of an iTunes-less process as being a direct-to-iPod connection straight through the OS. Something like dragging files through Explorer straight on the iPod and be done with it, like I can with my camera or phone.
But then again, I'm of the old skool opinion that thinks the best MP3 library software is still just well organized files and directories, and that the best MP3 player on the computer is `cat /media/mp3s/artist/album/song_title.mp3 > /dev/sound/dsp` ... ;) - chadel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Has anyone else just installed winamp lite onto their iPod. You can use winamp's built in iPod support or ml_pod with it.
The only change you need to make to winamp is adding this to the beginning of winamp.ini:
[WinampReg]

- johanm, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6then... itunes!
its inevitable - cwcheang, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"a review of 3 programs that give you more functionality then Itunes."
i know where to get itunes myself thank you very much. - muzzle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yamipod is totally my favorite. This digg "article" is poor, three softwares that most users don't use.
This is actually usefull however: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_iPod_Managers
PS. yamipod needs no installation and can run from the ipod itself, its freeware and cross platform (osx/ xp/ linux) - majik, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6http://www.rockbox.org which works for

# SanDisk: Sansa E200 series (the R models are not supported) - Shadowhawk109, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Sorry for the double comment. Please digg down my previous one. My screen resolution is apparently not up to handling the differance between a capital I and a lowercase i.
So, a better way to phrase my previous post *that I couldn't edit in time* would be 'Is it really such a surprise that his name is iFox instead of IFox? I mean, if you're so anal-retentive about the capitalization of the vowel I as a prefix, at least you applied the rule to yourself. Congratulations: you're not a hypcrite. Just someone suffering from cranial-rectal inversion. And pray tell how you can assume someone is a 'microsoftie' just by the fact that they capitalized iTunes and iPod. We're all dying to know.
Grow up. I doubt you even RFTA'd. You just logged in to act like a two year old. Put on your big boy diapers and accept that THIS IS THE *****' INTERNET!
I'm also amazed you didn't have l33t5p34k in your sentence - everything about your comment screams two year old. - BlackAdderIII, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The kind of breakthrough where you install KDE. :-)
- anjinash, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Rockbox is really cool, but I've found that it drains my 5G iPod's batteries more than twice as fast as Apple's firmware, and getting album art displaying properly is a gigantic headache. I've no doubt that the project will mature over time, though ... and when it does I'll be the first in line to install it again.
Question: WHY doesn't Apple open the iPod up for themes/skins? You'd think they'd at least allow you to add wallpapers of some sort. - stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Banshee is good, too.
- annihilator675, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3mikesbaker, no, its foobar.
- Lnx991, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Why isn't Amarok on there? It has the same functionality of iTunes, except its actually organized... among other things... It also works without Windows...
- sshhaammss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3ur dum
who cares - sshhaammss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1rockbox. battery life sacrifice, but yes -- that funkshunalitty
- Beerduck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yes. Then you can say byebye to iTunes forever.
- nato64, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Am I the only digger that thinks one of the only reasons people hate iTunes is because everyone likes being a non-conformist? If you don't like the iTMS, turn it off. I mean I understand people's personal preference what's what's so horrible about it? Heaven forbid the interface is easy to use, unlike any other p.o.s. music software I used to use. And do people hate it because it's made by Apple? If you're judging a company based on the die-hard fans (the ones that can't stand to see I-tunes) than try flipping that judgment on yourself. It was popular to hate Microsoft and now it's popular to hate Apple. I'm always going to use whatever I think is the best product. And I have yet to see one single logical reason to hate iTunes.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Does in KDE - that's what the power of kioslaves is all about. You open ipod:/ in konqueror and drag and drop works fine.
Alternatively, use amarok - that's what I do. Works with 'em all, ipod, creative, whatever. - radaneo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1pmp_iPod does work, but ml_iPod has more features than the 1st party plugin.
- nato64, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah, that won't really work. The deal iTunes has with the media companies is that you can own as many iPods as you want but you can't take the files off of an iPod and put them onto a different computer, one that you haven't given your 5 authorizations to.
