- BossKey, on 05/22/2009, -3/+16How is Applelication formed?
- jumboshrimp11, on 05/22/2009, -2/+11Seriously? There are so many things wrong with this comment that I don't think I could list them all without my fingers bleeding...
- OfNumbers, on 05/22/2009, -3/+8I always thought they had a dungeon full of starving software jockeys who fought for rations. I guess I was wrong, kind of.
- Billions, on 05/22/2009, -1/+6I think a lot of people are going to get turned off by the story's Appleā¢-branded title, but it's an interesting article that makes for good reading for anyone interested in developing ideas.
- sigurRos, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4How Jobs get pragnent?
- N01SE, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4How any other software is born. Platform has very little to do with the development process. Scrum is a good process but is way overrated, usually sprints only last a week and those weeks are grueling, it's not a very developer-friendly process. Plus, the majority of software companies have either clients who really can't afford the cost of software or management who do not understand software setting deadlines, the mention of little time for polishing in the article is easier said as "it probably has bugs and could be re-coded to be way more efficient in both performance and memory, more maintainable, robust, scalable, etc." but time was up.
- BossKey, on 05/22/2009, -2/+6I'm a Mac guy but I don't see how this article shows that Mac software development is special in any way. Just seems like a story about how a company on any platform might create a new title. Mockup, UI test, iteration, refining...you could have substituted "Web 2.0" or "Windows 7" for "Apple" and given it a different buzz.
- adriaaan, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4Well done, you win an internet!
- lupinglade, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Stupid title. This isn't Apple software its Mac software. Apple software would be software written by Apple, which this is not.
- lacreme, on 05/22/2009, -9/+12A lot of Windows software is developed similarly.
There's also terrible mac applications. - MrTea, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3I lol'd
- MrTea, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3HAHAHA OH MUH GAWD LIEK UR SO EDGY!
M$! STICK IT TO THA MAN - GarryBarker, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3The difference between Windows developers and Apple platform developers is that Apple developer won't do it purely for money, they have a passion for the platform and care a great deal more about the end user experience and thus a higher quality product will always be produced.
- Metaleks, on 05/22/2009, -6/+8One of the best things about the <insert favourite OS> is the community of dedicated software developers that create high-quality software. But what is involved in the process that goes into planning and developing new software for the <insert favourite OS>?
- markedOne, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2BS, I really can't see why this is something special. It's like developing software for any other platform.
- raydeen, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2That article was a joke right? 'But to decide if mockups really work, we have to code them. ' No ***** Sherlock!
- Altotus, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2"Well, Jimmy, when a developer and a platform love each other very much..."
[long technical explanation about development "cycles", exception fondling (er, handling), inserting and pulling out unit tests over and over]
"...and nine months later you have an app. The miracle of software development." - ronindigg, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2The LOL did it for me
- jumboshrimp11, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2For the most part, yes, though I have had a good share of both OSX and Ubuntu over the years... but how is that relevant to the ridiculousness of eramos' comment?
- inactive, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2No, that's because it's a port of an 11 year old application using legacy frameworks that has had more and more features tacked on without optimization of the core code base.
- strangewill, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2As a developer for Linux/Windows, if I ended up plopping down the $800 I need just to get my foot in the door of Apple development, you can bet like HELL I'm charging money for every line of code I write for the overpriced bitch.
- vikblazin, on 05/22/2009, -2/+3lol
- zakool21, on 05/22/2009, -1/+2How OS X software is born. The title leads us to believe that this is how software made by Apple, Inc. is born. I accidentally the whole article, though. Is this dangerous?
- wwwluckyro, on 05/23/2009, -1/+2You're probably getting dugged down for mentioning Xtorrent.
- pyrates, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1How is babby formed?
- illdourmum, on 05/22/2009, -3/+3Not True!
name a few... - cawpin, on 05/22/2009, -3/+3"One of the best things about the Mac is the community of dedicated software developers that create high-quality software."
And one of the worst is that every person who writes a Mac application wants their $19.95 for it. That's one of the biggest pains I've run into since I got my MBP. Many programs that were free on Windows don't have a free Mac counterpart. - antimac, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1nice story, but totally BS.
Apple coverflow was actually developed by coverflow (or whats their name) and apple bought all the IPs. - ronindigg, on 05/22/2009, -2/+1how is that different than any other OS (or any other software development..)
- datdamonfoo, on 05/22/2009, -3/+2How Apple Software is Born: Steve Jobs has a bowel movement, paints it shiny white, and sells it for $1,000 more than the competitors.
- MightyUpsetter, on 05/22/2009, -4/+3Got any examples - I bet we can find you a free version thats better than your old Windows version.
- mikusd, on 05/22/2009, -2/+1yeah, since windows update doesnt do this...
oh, and if your are a Vista advocate (I'm assuming, so what!), don't bring up annoyances in the OS :) - KalvinAlexander, on 05/22/2009, -5/+4Now I understand why iTune sux
- immatellyouwhat, on 05/22/2009, -4/+3Windows User: "I'm pretty sure they just take everyone's ideas and repackage them in a shiny wrapper and claim it as ground breaking."
Mac User: "Lol let's see how Vista develops apps, oh yeah they just make it simple and easy to use without any proble...oh wait."
World War III has been going on for a while now. - jsmith212600, on 05/22/2009, -4/+3Is this why there are no games?
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -4/+2What's wrong with wanting $20 for a program you wrote?
If it's not worth that much, write it yourself, smart guy. - Pake, on 05/22/2009, -8/+5I know how Apple's Apple software is born. First step, they ask themselves:
"What's the most annoying thing we can do to people who use our software?"
"How about prechecking our other software that the user does not want every time we release an update?"
"Great idea!" - namp, on 05/22/2009, -6/+2"How Apple Software is Born"
...by desperately trying to hide that it actually runs on BSD - Billions, on 05/22/2009, -6/+1Jumboshrimp: Are you using Windows?
- friday04, on 05/22/2009, -12/+5Please give me an example of a software company for Windows putting as much thought into their application as this: http://www.cabel.name/2007/09/coda-toolbar-and-thr ...
I'll admit, this developer goes to the extreme for his wares. But many Mac developers go very far to ensure that their app is above and beyond what you would get from big vendors. There are some terrible Mac apps. But there are so very many terrible apps for Windows.
Anyone can make an application for both platforms. But there are so many more "anyones" doing it on Windows that there's such a mountain of ***** to sift through to find the really great gems. In the Mac Indie Development community, only the good ones bubble to the top. Many people own OmniGraffle or Tweetie, or Transmit, or Skitch, or Xtorrent, or...you get the point. Great apps by small developers who made a decision to put time and thought into making great apps. - eramos, on 05/22/2009, -23/+6I don't know, but we know how Micro$haft software is born: just steal it from Apple's cradle! LOL
