- jmullman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14What if my favorite music includes The Beatles?
- CLIFFosakaJAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14mmmm...let's see; how about customer service to win the guests back for repeat visits
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11As someone who designs hotel directories for a living, I can tell you this much: If a spritzer is 15 bucks, the iPod's gotta be $800.
Just hit up the Apple store. - chiller2002, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I've been in this hotel, and it is all about modern art (in fact the lower level is a public free-of-charge modern art museum). The iPod is modern art, and the convenience of having your favorite music ready for you to travel with while in town. The entire hotel is centered around making your experience as pleasurable as possible, with the concierge actively helping you instead of passively waiting for you. This only makes sense.
- woodyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You're probably right. I was assuming the cost would be for the iPod only. I'm sure they will charge for the music too.
Here's a link to some photos.

- drw2583, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I am no expert, but could it be that they are using the iPod because it is the most popular MP3 player in the world?
I know, it's pretty "out-there", but using the most popular MP3 player in the world instead of an imitation MIGHT actually be a good idea...
...just a thought. - ArmandoM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wow...I'm sure that guy has got to be the life of every party he attends.
- woodyc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7My thoughts exactly. Especially since this story made the front page. The goons will be all over this one.
- ArmandoM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The cost of the ipod + the cost of the music, probably at 99 cents per track, plus the 500% markup just for being available in the hotel room.
"Do you have coke in a glass harmonica?"
"Do you have individually wrapped cashews?" - thejadedmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why not just have the ipods loaded via the hotel's account. When the person leaves, and they take the iPod, the second that they sync it with their computer the music gets wiped. Or better yet, leave it up to the customer to wipe the music.
- askewed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4God that guy is weird. Raise your hands if you *would* actually use any of those 'tricks'?
- padewak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4does room service do the custom song uploads to the playlists? they be some smart-ass bedmakers ...
- richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You have bedbugs in your bed. Everybody does, just don't think about it.
- Quarks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"The public bathrooms at 21C, located on the first floor, are an attraction unto themselves. The men's room has a see-through waterfall that doubles as a urinal. Men can peer through the glass and watch people in the hallway. (People in the hallway can't see in, however.)
In both the men's and women's rooms, the mirrors double as video art — with images of eyes watching people as they wash their hands."
That's creepy! - Catachresis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Does anyone else wonder how on earth they know what a guest's favourite music is? Presuming you have to tell them in advance, surely anyone who cares enough to do that would have an MP3 player anyway?
It's a useless gimmick, no? Still, interesting story... - cmcarson, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9as long as they come with this it sounds good to me
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=781588330456314841&pl=true - Flux0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How would you manage how much to charge. Weren't people getting in trouble for selling loaded IPODs from eBay? This won't fly for too long.
- Kogut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think this guy has been to a party in several years...
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 So, if i take the Ipod preloaded with music I like, do i get charged for the music as well? If not then i just got an Ipod full of music that i like with out paying for the music it self.
- theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They could just go with music under a Creative Commons License. That would get around all the copyright issues.
- CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice.... or Radiohead?
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Damn I was hoping that it was at Hotel 6 or something...
- Schda, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Guests will be contacted five to seven days before arrival to determine their needs, from transportation to theater tickets and restaurant reservations.
"That's the time when we will determine their music preferences to load onto the iPod," Gigliotti said. "
It says in the article :)
Seems really interesting in my opinion. I'd love to see pictures of the rooms. - aaryn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wonder what they do if you don't buy it? The iPod is probably scratched to **** after a guest uses it for their stay, I'm assuming they don't reuse them?
- rwelsh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good article, I dugg it. Though, I think the iPod aspect was only a small aspect of it. I thought the whole thing was crazy.
But I guess for the tech news tie-in, that would have been the iPod point...and maybe the Segway too. - ctomasi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wonder if they would load it up with my favorite podcasts since I don't listen to much music any more. :-)

http://wbyoung.ambitiouslemon.com/senuti/ - dwwatk01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I realize the stigma that comes from being in Kentucky, but Louisville is nothing like the rest of the state (which is pretty backwards I admit). The engineering program at the University of Louisville is highly regarded, and Louisville is now one of the top 30 or so largest cities in terms of population. We are just as technologically advanced as anywhere else.
- brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Are you assuming that they're not being charged for the music? Because I'm sure they are.
- zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SWEET ITS ONLY $119 FOR ME!!!
- chiller2002, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"I'd love to see pictures of the rooms."
Here you go: http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Site=B2&Date=20060321&Category=FEATURES&ArtNo=603210803&Ref=PH&Params=Itemnr=15 - lilfroger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"with images of eyes watching people as they wash their hands." That would trip me out....I don't think I could handle that.
- dko1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It is unlikely that the hotel is able to copy music to a guests iPod in a legal fashion. If they are using iTunes, then the customers iTunes account needs to be used lest the content become useless next time the iPod is connected to a different computer. If the hotel is loading up mp3 files for the client they need a digital phonorecording delivery (DPD) license from The Harry Fox Agency (HFA) and probably sound recording licenses from the labels. I doubt very much that this pre-loaded ipod gimmick will last.
- dantj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that would be best cause im sure they will charge the iPOD more than retail price....
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't forget the Kentucky Derby, playground for the rich and famous.
- chiller2002, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wouldn't the music have to be authorized to work on the computer that it is being attached to? So basically the hotel can use its own account, max out the 5 computer authorizations, and no one could play the music on any other computer, just that iPod. And if the hotel is paying for the download, then it would be legal. And I wouldn't put it past the hotel to acquire licenses, mostly because it would be free advertising for new albums, directly targeted to people that already say they like it. This would all around benefit everyone, the hotel, Apple, and *gasp* the RIAA.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Well the Macbots automatically dig anything with iPod, Mac or Steve in it.
- kmelwing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This made me do a double take when I realized that this is in Louisville of all places.
- chiller2002, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2He sounds like Mr. Shane of the Shane Co. jewelery store radio commercials. Almost fell asleep watching these *amazing* tricks.
- phoenix11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait a second. I remember reading 6 weeks ago about the RIAA cracking down on the sale of iPods pre-loaded with music:
http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=174065
Per the hotel article, these pre-loaded iPods can be purchased during your hotel stay. So, why is it OK for a Hotel to sell pre-loaded iPods, but not an eBay'er? - xravenx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I agree with xch I mean how do they know what music anyone listen too for that matter? Like they have time to download new songs for every guest and still run a profitable hotel. Also taking this home I mean what if someone gave a fraudulent credit card info aka. Identity Fraud.. it does become an issue I'm sure.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who know what else you might find on it or where it's been after a wild weekend? I wonder if they sterilize these iPods after use? Don't wipe that sticky smear on the screen ;( with your finger.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How would they know what kind of music I listen to?
That would be expensive iPod if I have to pay for it, and all the songs they downloaded. - cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1better give me a new pair of phones so i dont catch anything.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm, isn't that illegal if you don't have the original songs? (Well, if you copy the music of the iPod after you take it home..)
Anyway, overall songs.. extortionate... Cool, but must be insanely costly to stay there..
- Ben - TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah... I dunno about the hotel choosing "my favorite music." Would you just give them broad categories? If it's anything like Music Choice (or other digital music channels on cable), I'll pass. Giving them a broad category like "electronica/techno" would probably result in getting an iPod loaded with crap. I could only see them doing it if they had general categories of iPods to choose from, otherwise the setup would be too complicated and time intensive for each guest. And if they allowed choices down to the artist, I have a feeling I'd get plenty of "sorry, don't have that" responses from the hotel staff, seeing as my music taste is not at all within the "pop" or "mainstream" categories.
In lieu of getting an iPod filled with what a hotel thinks might be my music taste, I'll just bring my own music (or none at all) instead, thanks anyway. - brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3You do know that the iPod plays unprotected files, right? And you know that 99% of other MP3 players support enrypted files (PlayForSure)?
- Enhyven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unless they have the music Backed up on the ipod in disk space use, then you cannot copy the songs.
- databasecowboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3It's creepy enough sleeping in a public bed especially with the current rash, ah epidemic, of bed bugs even in high end hotels. I really don't want to put the earbuds of an iPod in my ears that some strangers were using before me unless they can provide me with free earbud condoms... hmm, that could be a new iPod aftermarket product.
