- Drumrboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Forget paying for games to play on the ipod firmware.
Rockbox could do pretty much anything this new firmware can do and more a while ago.
Rockbox is all open source therefore, its Free.
It s actually built from the ground up to be a complete DAP firmware replacement, and its not based on anything else (unlike ipod linux, which is pretty much just a gimmick, whereas Rockbox is actually 100% usable and then some :) )
Try it:
http://www.rockbox.org - richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9no, but this is open source, and it is free.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10We can only cross our fingers and hope for an SDK with Leopard/XCode3. Unlikely though. All the current games are commercial, and Apple very likely want to keep it that way. The feeling from EA/Etc is probably that 'why would someone buy our Tetris [etc] if, someone else has implemented it for free'.
- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If you want an iPod SDK, go to bugreport.apple.com, and file a request for it. The number of people asking for something is one of the main criteria in prioritizing it.
-jcr - yorgle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7"...signed certificate from Apple..."
Yes. all of the current games have a signed certificate, and you'd expect that from purchased games. But there might be a possiblity to have games without one, that is not DRM protected, like these games are.
(btw, I started that page to help accumulate all of the info from all of the other sites. i need to clean it up and reorganize it...)(I'm BleuLlama there.) - daboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This may be true, BUT to install it, you still have to go through a moderate hell of a process.
I know because I have installed both iPod linux (or Podzilla if you want to call it that) and Rockbox on my Gen5 30 gig.
with these homebrew games, it should just be a matter of drag and drop. much simpler. hence more people can and will use it.
That's why this project exists. - TyrannousDotNet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3 you can make widgets and other apps with apple's permission, why not games...
- domr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4From the linked page:

"Homebrew is probably an impossibility at this point because of the expectation of a signed cert from Apple." - csshih, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They dont work yet due to authorization, but you are going to want to download this for the future, when the DRM is cracked. :P

I myself would buy the Apple games, but I hate ITUNES with a passion which is required to install them, its total garbage, and use SharePod instead to transfer my music.
- whytookay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just to point out to you speedemonspecv, you can get half life for your ipod nano. Also it is possible to get game boy color games on your ipod (but there aren't any good ones as far as I know)
- jay314, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Riiiight.. have you TRIED developing something for iPodLinux?
I have. And I've never in my life had such a hassle to get a toolchain installed and get a simple "hello world" to compile. I'm willing to give it another try if they've improved their toolchain and organized the structure of their APIs since I last tried.
There are some seriously amazing things that can be done on a portable device with tens of gigs of drive space. - Addaone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Coming Soon: Homebrew iPod games.
Coming After That: Homebrew iPod viruses. - igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8dude, i own a DS, and i still think these iPod games are the *****
y? because my DS lite is STILL bigger than my iPod (not by much though ;-D), and because I hardly ever leave my house without my iPod... the same cannot be said for my DS. It would be cool to have some games on something i constantly carry around - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Why is virtually ever comment in this story dugg down?
If you don't like the story, move along. Digging down every comment in it does no good. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5That all very well saying use other software on your ipod but this project is targeted at people who won't or does'nt know how to put somthing like ipod linux or Rockbox. If i asked all my friends who had ipods if they knew about put linux on thier ipod they wont have a clue and i strongly think that care about it. Theres also the people who are scared about messing with there ipod incase of breaking it.
That is why this project exsists. - bieber, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5...gotta love proprietary software. If you want to develop games for the iPod, use Rockbox or iPod LInux. They both have well documented and fully accessible means of writing third party applications---no reverse engineering required.
- vestige, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5If you're worried about breaking your iPod the last thing you want to do is start running homebrew apps based on reverse engineering.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I personally think this is actually a pretty good idea.
Now we might actually have software that runs in the original ipod os...
Maybe something like rockbox and ipodlinux does with the sound quality, it really seems that the volume can get a lot higher and it accepts more formats.
So if such things are implanted into the original os we can have the ipod we always wanted without begging apple to add one simple feature.
Look how long it took for them to add video playback, ipodlinux/rockbox had that months before.
The ipod music search thingy, that was already some what possible from a text script from itunesregistry.com
So I am all for in for this development. - Svoma15, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2No you couldn't put Call of Duty on there. Haha, it may have a lot of space but not the other requirements.
- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4I normally agree with Apple's actions on things, but not having an SDK for the iPod is just plain stupid.
Most people would much rather have hundreds of choices of free games browsable like Podcasts than 9 commercial games.
Apple would make more money off of the extra iPods sold than they will on the games they will sell. - Solanka, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0It's a pretty good idea but it'll be broken somehow. Apple isn't good with games.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Well, I read an article and posted it earlier this week that homebrew games were pretty much impossible due to the lack of an SDK, but if the games are just re-named .zip files, it looks like we only have the authentication issue to get rid of. I don't think this could be that hard, yet again I know nothing about programming or certificates
Is it possible that the iPod is set to become the next PSP, with Apple releasing new hardware everytime hackers break the firmware? I kinda hope so, I would love to play some homebrew on my iPod - speedemonspecv, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2If there was a way to create homebrew games for the iPod, what would the limit for size be? I mean, you can't have a full iPod ready version of, say Call of Duty, would you? And couldn't somebody fake the Apple certificate too?
- MuTeD, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5iPodLinux has like Doom and *****, and has had it since the iPod Mini... funny how Apple takes all their ideas -.-
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Apple isnt a person. They are a multi-million (Billion?) dollar corporation, they wouldnt give out games for there top-selling item for free. 5 bucks is cool for such high quality games.
- okeemike, on 10/12/2007, -18/+8Free doesn't mean that it's necessarily any good.
- michaelbrawn, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4ipodlinux?? any1 ever heard of that? there are already more games for it than apple has released.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3Hmmm.....How much do you get for advertising a free program then?
- hman2, on 10/12/2007, -20/+9Just because something's open source doesn't automatically entail it's free.
- batmanbury, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3God forbid you buy a DS or PSP...
- josepuerto, on 10/12/2007, -18/+2omg i love myspace lol
