- Solkre, on 11/17/2009, -0/+28You don't want tethering on Verizon either. They seem to think that you should pay $30 for it, on top of the $30 data plan for the phone itself.
- Tddupre, on 11/17/2009, -0/+9PDAnet has saved me numerous times
- Hivetyrant, on 11/17/2009, -0/+6How to tether on Windows mobile devices:
1. Plug in device
2. Run the program called "Internet sharing"
3. Choose USB or Bluetooth
4. Enjoy - superkendall, on 11/17/2009, -0/+6All 3.x iPhones have that same tethering support, but the carrier has to enable it. In 3.0 it was actually as simple as downloading a permission file, but sadly that is fixed and you can't do that in 3.1 onward...

- superkendall, on 11/17/2009, -1/+6I'm worried that when AT&T comes out with tethering it will cost the same. I really wish they'd offer a "light" tethering plan since I'd only use it a few times a month, if that... no way I can justify $30/month.
- PhillAholic, on 11/17/2009, -0/+3I think the more important thing in all of this is how the carriers get away with calling their data plans unlimited when they are anything but. That's pretty much an outright lie.
- ohreilly, on 11/17/2009, -0/+3How to tether on Nokia mobile devices:
1: Install PC Suite.
2: Connect phone via non-proprietary USB cable or via bluetooth
3: Click on the "one touch access" icon and tell it what network you are on
4: Click connect
5: Enjoy. - AthlonCannon, on 11/17/2009, -1/+4When did AT&T promise tethering by the end of Summer??? I remember during the announcement of 3.0 they said MMS would be available by the end of Summer (ultimately missing the mark by 2 days) and then during the tethering announcement, European carriers were announced but AT&T was blatantly absent and the crowd even chuckled at that. Can you point out what point of the convention they announced tethering?
- ibeetle, on 11/17/2009, -0/+3The ***** article also says Verizon promised tethering in the crap fictional time line within two months of Droid release. Verizon has made no such promise.
- flux123, on 11/17/2009, -0/+3Yah, and for the 3gb data package, you're looking at over 100 dollars a month. With the 6gb data package from rogers that's no longer available, I still get bills of well over 100 dollars before I even turn my phone on. They're able to roll this ***** out because they are raping Canadian customers dry. Now rogers changed their upgrade policy so smartphone users can only upgrade every 2 years, instead of 1, so if I want the 3gs, it's gonna cost me 750 dollars to purchase outright, and I'm STILL locked into a contract I can't cancel without paying 500 dollars to get into a different plan which will rape me JUST AS BAD. ***** Canadian cell phone carriers.
- allankh, on 11/17/2009, -0/+3Although it is iTunes that installs the network preference file (though you can apparently do it manually) which enables tethering, that doesn't really have much to do with your iTunes account or what country it's based in. It all has to do with what network you're on. If you're on Rogers 3G, the settings file that iTunes installs will match your network settings, and you'll be able to tether; if you're not on Rogers, the settings won't match the network, and you won't be able to tether.
Make sense? - JasonCox, on 11/17/2009, -1/+3I still don't understand how AT&T can claim that their network wouldn't be able to support the load caused by allowing every iPhone user to (pay and) tether, but every ***** day I see an AT&T commercial advertising either a buying a computer that comes with a built in 3G connection or one of those 3G dongles that you can stick into your laptop's USB slot.
Am I the only one who thinks that an iPhone user tethering up his laptop in an emergency is actually going to use LESS bandwidth than the average Joe User who bought a cheapo laptop from AT&T and is now downloading ***** from iTunes? - masterkenobi, on 11/17/2009, -2/+4How to tether Verizon with a Droid phone:
1. turn on USB debugging in the development settings
2. install PDANet
3. enjoy - smacksaw, on 11/17/2009, -0/+2That was true initially, that I had to call Rogers to get it enabled, but now it's just there. I never asked them to enable it. I did and upgrade and I have it.
- Zelannii, on 11/17/2009, -0/+2all well and good, if Verizon wasn't also blocking tethering on new "open app platform" smartphones as well, and planning to charge $30 a month vs. AT&T's annoucned $10 a month for the same thing, and the fact that Verizon caps their "unlimited" data plan at 5GB (with a $50/gb incremental overage charge), and also charges another $15 a month for ActiveSync access which AT&T includes free.
You may say ***** AT&T, but ***** Verizon HARDER. - acardwell3, on 11/17/2009, -0/+2I was trying to make the point that it's worth it to jailbreak, and also the only way to enable tethering on the latest firmware. Blackra1n makes it so simple there's hardly an excuse to not jailbreak.
- krisrm, on 11/17/2009, -0/+2Yeah, you'd think that the USA, being the center for most tech goodness, would be able to provide some reasonable cell services... turns out, nope.
- Zippo, on 11/17/2009, -2/+3In Canada, Rogers has been supporting tethering since day 1... and now Bell & Telus have the iPhone - and they're supporting tethering too. Three major networks in Canada officially support tethering on the iPhone... and none in the US yet.
Bell & Telus have already rolled out a nearly-nationwide 21mbit HSPA+ network and Rogers is starting to roll out theirs as well (hell, they're also rolling out 4G LTE in Vancouver in time for the Olympics). Even with the iPhone 3G on Rogers' HSDPA, I can pull down 2-3mbit... and from what I've seen AT&T users have a hard time even pulling down 1.
Canada's totally beating the pants off the US when it comes to the iPhone. - phphreak, on 11/20/2009, -0/+1I pay $30 for unlimited incoming calls, 150 minutes outgoing, unlimited calls on 'evenings' after 9 pm, and unlimited weekends. I pay another $30 for 6 GB per month of data, including tethering. I pay another $17 for visual voicemail, caller id, and 2500 text messages. All in all, it adds up to around $95 a month out of my pocket for Rogers.
The real rape is the 3 year contract. It's completely unjustified but then again no one if forcing me to use the iPhone.
Bell and Telus's deals are laughable. - mapnet, on 11/18/2009, -0/+1It's ridiculous that lawsuits aren't being filed against North American telecom operators for FALSELY ADVERTISING their data service as being unlimited when they really are not. It's even more ridiculous though that consumers there think its reasonable for operators to charge them TWICE for those pathetic, low quality services, just because they use them in two different ways. Would consumers in North America be ok with their electric companies charging them different rates depending on what appliances they use? Would they be ok with their water companies charing them different rates for the water that comes out of a faucet v.s. the water used by their dishwasher? Mobile services are a fundamental utility, just like power and water, and in THE REST OF THE WORLD, they are treated as such. Here in Finland I pay a flat rate for a GSM unlimited data connection - 15 euros per month - and it is truly unlimited and can do WHATEVER I WANT WITH IT. I honestly don't understand how North American consumers put up with such draconian, unfair business practices...
- phphreak, on 11/20/2009, -0/+1Then it gets wiped out when you upgrade to the latest firmware.
- thelostviking22, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1Thank you.
- DrDigg, on 11/17/2009, -2/+3That can't even provide adequate data service in a lot of cities. Do you actually think that they can do tethering on top of that? Time to cut the exclusivity with ATT to spread out iphone users among the different carriers and get better service.
- seldon21, on 11/17/2009, -1/+2We are already paying for what? They have stated that they want to hold down bandwidth consuming devices and limited consumption. What are we paying the extra $30 bucks for? This is nonsense, and this company is still doing the same crap they did pre-deregulation.
This is little at$t..... Anyone else notice the subtle logo change a couple years back? - masterkenobi, on 11/17/2009, -2/+3There are tethering apps out there for Android, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile. I was able to tether my Droid last night and it worked great.
- Zelannii, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1... $30 for "unlimited" data plan from Verizon (capped at 5GB with a $50/GB overage charge). $15 extra for ActiveSync use (Free on AT&T), and $30 more for tethering (also not available until "late Q1 2010") which is ALSO capped, and 3x the price of AT&T's upcoming iPhone tethering option.
and for a phone with a half assed app community, a barely-out-of-beta operating system, and a cheap plastic feel in one's hands, on a service that charges a $350 termination fee (twice the industry normal), and they think this is going to dislodge the iPhone? - masterkenobi, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1Yup, that worked great on my i760 (the phone I had before). I had to reinstall it though because that program was taken out of the standard install. I mean it's free, but still.
- jelstro, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1@AthlonCannon
You are correct. It was never promised on ATT. This article is full of speculation and misrepresentation of facts. Sure it sucks that the tethering capabilities of my phone aren't available on ATT, but you don't have to lie to prove that point.
Diggers seem to love bashing Apple so much lately that it doesn't even matter if it's true or not for it to make front page. - thelostviking22, on 11/18/2009, -0/+1Well wouldn't there be a way to disable at least that part of the software?
- smacksaw, on 11/17/2009, -2/+3Question - I have a US iTunes account, had it for awhile. I have a Rogers iPhone. When I go to iTunes, I actually see AT&T apps and all of the US content, as it is a US iTunes account. I also have tethering on my iPhone. If I am getting the firmware upgrade that gave me tethering, what would prevent other people from doing it on AT&T? I don't know, but I assume my upgrades are coming from the US iTunes service.
- Hivetyrant, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1Australia still doesn't have tethering through it's largest Telco either (Telstra) though the other carriers do it for a nominal fee (well I know Optus does, I think 3 is free)
So don't feel too bad!
And you can knock Telstra all you want, but unfortunately the alternatives don't offer the speed of NextG.
I still don't understand why I should have to pay for the option to use the data I'm already paying for when all other data enabled phones do it free.... - bpm2000, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1Whatever, the users will claim tethering is unimportant *until* the day they get it and they will act like its the greatest "invention" since sliced bread.
- antoniojvr, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1My recollection was MMS by the end of summer and Tethering "later on this year"...
- Zelannii, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1The difference is not what YOU download, it;s the MASSIVE amount of traffic a single PC generates simply by being on the net... Update checks, patches, virus definitions, and all kinds of other background reporting services running against central servers. if you include games, you could be talking an EASY 1GB per month in patches for just a single MMO.
Also, phones don't typically download 100MB programs, ISOs, torrent files, do media sharing, and all the other things people with access to tethering technology love to do as soon as they realize they can turn off their DSL at home and use conenction sharing to hale all their wireless PCs route through a single phone's connection. - Zelannii, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1A) their network really is on the brink in a lot of large cities, and thy're really trying hard not to spend too much adding 3G capacity while they're rolling out LTE to replace it starting next year...
B) those with a data card pay $60 month for a 5GB cap. ($35 for a 200M cap). That's a LOT more than they pay for iPhone plans and more than 90% of iPhone users exceed 200MB by VAST margins (some 20% exceed 5GB monthly).
C) there are more than 10 million iPhones, there are about half a million laptop connect users (not including business customers which pay more).
D) those who tether are even more likely to dump landlines and DSL services, a highly profitable revenue stream.
E) A single PC can easily exceed 5GB per month use, and places significant load on the network that phones don't (think patch tuesday!). My home connection averages about 20GB... - datsunzcr, on 11/17/2009, -0/+0Been tethering in central florida area for months now. Works great since version 3.0 without a jailbreak (I just don't upgrade). It has a problem when there is a lot of traffic on a single tower (like during an event) or no 3G access. AT&T airport cards don't work seem to want to work on a MAC, so this is fine with me.... AT&T really needs to just let the whole thing go and allow us to tether for free - really! what is the difference if I download a 10meg PDF file thru safari on the iPhone or thru my computer using tethering?? It is the same amount of data folks! AT&T could get a lot of customers just be turning it on for FREE!!!
- thisthatwhat, on 11/17/2009, -3/+3Had tethering on Roger's since day 1 of iPhone 3.0 release. Who's AT&T?
- Echuu, on 11/16/2009, -4/+4AT&T does indeed suck, had it on Telia since 3.0
- TheGuruStud, on 11/17/2009, -3/+3Tethering on my lowly G1 haha. Cyanogen FTW (and all the other guys with custom ROMS).
- Zelannii, on 11/17/2009, -1/+1How to tether on an iPhone:
1: Downgrade to OS 3.1.1.
2: go to a website that distributes an updaded AT&T carrier file.
3: Reboot Device
4: Turn on tethering in settings and enjoy.
Jailbreak is NOT required.
AT&T has also promised to NOT charge or aggressivley persue iPhone users who enable tethering while they're still waiting to enable it for all users at a fee. Verizon in contracts has insisted they will not only charge people who illegally tether (wether or not it's available yet) and they may terminate your account as well. - Zelannii, on 11/17/2009, -1/+1it is not required to jailbreak an iPhoine to use tethering. Simply don;t install the current iPhone update (stay on 3.1.1 or earlier, or flash your phone back to the previous version) and there are a number of websites you can go to get an updated carrier file at and enable tethering free.
AT&T has clarified they WILL NOT go after people enabling tethering prior to it's legit availability. Feel free to tether if you feel you need it. (me, I've never once had my notebook somewhere that did not offer free (or AT&T) wifi services where I could not simply do what I wanted on my iPhone without turning the PC on. I'm not in a major city either, just an average large town... - acardwell3, on 11/17/2009, -3/+3Jailbreak -> Free tethering. Extremely easy to jailbreak and unlock with blackra1n.
Also you have to unlock to get tethering with AT&T on 3.1.2, but it's still easy as cake. - thelostviking22, on 11/17/2009, -1/+1Hmm, I'm a Verizon customer and I have the BB Storm. Am I able to do this with my phone without paying the extra $30/month for tethering alone, since I'm already paying for the $30/month data plan?
- Zelannii, on 11/17/2009, -1/+1It is technically possible, however Verizon made it clear with the release of Droid that tether is EXTRA on ALL plans, and softare exists in most devices to track unauthorized use of tethering services, and they WILL backbill anyone found tethering without a plan, and have the right to terminate your contract (including forcing you to pay back charges, termination fees, and refund subsidies received).
they're getting a bit anti-consumer if you ask me, and I'm actually real happy on AT&T, so for less money I'll stick with them. (iPhone data plan truly is unlimted not capped as Verizons, ActiveSync is free on AT&T not $15 extra, and tethering when it's available will only be $10 not $30). - masterkenobi, on 11/17/2009, -3/+2PDANet works great on the Droid, just tried it last night. No jailbreaking required, just need to change one checkbox in your settings to allow it to work.
