- miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -7/+314More like their parents will pay $500 for it.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -38/+199Are you people f'ing kidding me? If this doesn't reek of desperation then nothing does. Using the word of a bunch of High schoolers to try to pimp interest in this is just bizarre.
High school teens dont have 500.00 for a cell phone, period. And the number of parents whom would plunk down that much money for one is less than .0000000001%.
I cant hardly wait for the interview with 4th graders about how they also cant wait to get one.
Appleinsider needs to ashamed of themselves. - wild, on 10/12/2007, -2/+146And then use it to call their friends up and bitch about the price of a PS3.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+109The gap between what teens expect to happen and what really happens is pretty big. I have a lot of teenage relatives. Several of them were apparently 'going to buy a PS3'. The claim was made based on the assumption that they would have a job by then or run into $600 some other way. Surprisingly, while spending months on mySpace and pretty much doing nothing 24/7, they didn't get jobs or have $600 fall into their laps. Regardless of this unfortanate turn of events, they're equally optimistic about getting an iPhone, a laptop, a car, etc.

Never understimate the power of persuasive, endless nagging from a teenager. - canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51another recent study has shown that 100% of high school students would like to purchase a ferrari. too bad they can't afford that either.
- shifty2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48im sure these teens that were surveyed has $500 of their OWN money laying around. If my kid asked me for $500 to buy a cell phone, he would get a swift chop to the throat and told to get job! Parents should do the same (minus the throat chopping). Parents need to stop being pussies and make their kids work for what they want.
- ipodsweatshop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44Hey you, with no real responsibility or income, if you had $500, would you spend it on an iPhone?
Great survey. Why don't you ask starving people if they would eat if they had food. - PleaseJustDie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43@betobeto
*****... when I was growing up all nagging would get me was a belt shaped welt on my ass and no dinner. - ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -5/+44More like they'll spend $500 for an iPhone after they get the other items on their list... car, marijuana, etc...
- SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41I'm glad I saw this. I'm going to make sure not to give my kids tons of money to buy stuff like this.
When I wanted an Xbox 360, I got a job. - DantesOfSparta, on 10/12/2007, -5/+42High school rich kids have too much money and free time, a recent study has shown
- sleepingcow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38saying you will plunk $500 down and actually plunking down $500 is two diffrent thing.
- NX910a, on 10/12/2007, -10/+43I'll spend $5 on the iPhone...that's how much money I bring to with me to class
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36I hate these rich little ***** that got surveyed. There is no chance in hell I ever had anything close to $500 in high school, and I couldn't even get money for a movie ticket from my parents. Now you have these spoiled brats expecting $500 telephones. WTF!?
I'm assuming these kids are mooching the money from their parents. If they are earning it, we seriously need to decrease the minimum wage. - cherrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28NEWS FLASH: High school teens lack fiscal responsibility.
- NeoCortex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27In related news, 50% of high schoolers say they'll gladly pay $50 to the school bully to kick the crap out of the person with the iPhone and take it.
- wozley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Yeah, I thought class rings were a dumb idea. So I bought me a nice new TV set and slapped a "Class of 2006" sticker on the side of it. And you know what? I still use my Class TV.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22I have a job, and have the money to pay for an iPhone, but there is no way in hell I would pay $500 for a cell phone. I got mine for $40 with a $40 mail in rebate, it makes phone calls and takes pictures, so I'm good.
- revenge7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26NEWS FLASH: Everyone on Digg hates high schoolers.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19My son lost a $79 iPod Shuffle he received as a gift. There's no way in hell he's going to be trusted with a phone that costs six times as much.
- mistermanoli, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Highschool kids are stupid..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17High school teens will also spend $200 on sneakers, $1000 on prom night and $500 for a ***** class ring which will not be worn after graduation from high school (most of us went through that phase). Why is this article news?
- Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24Flag564, if you really don't think a lot of parents will buy them it, you have a much smaller handle on the current state of parenting in America than you think you do.
I'm not saying they SHOULD, because most of those kids are spoiled little ***** who will probably never appreciate anything in their lives except getting drunk, but that's probably what is going to happen. - RFdriver, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21"And yes, i'm a mac user, which in the end speaks for itself."
You're right now I understand why you would spend $500 of your hard earned cash for a telephone. It's because Apple made it and everyone will think you're cool for owning one. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20wha'eva, wha'eva, i'll do wha' I want!
- macfanboi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14"Somewhat surprisingly, nearly 85 percent said.." they knew nothing about how cell phone contracts worked.
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Proof kids can't do math.
- Quick2822, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Everyone here is so proud of the young man you're becoming, though not sure who you are trying to impress.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24You forgot that you:
Live rent free
Pay no utilities
Have no insurance to pay for
If I had that setup, I could buy 500.00 phones too.
If I was your dad, and you walked in with a 500.00 cell phone, you will start looking for a nice apartment the day after graduating.
"And yes, i'm a mac user, which in the end speaks for itself."
When you are out of HS, see how much the world will care. - iceperson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"High school teens dont have 500.00 for a cell phone, period. And the number of parents whom would plunk down that much money for one is less than .0000000001%."
Didn't someone post a survey here on Digg recently of highschool kids that said they (on average) expect to make 124k after they graduate college? - thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@Nixon
How often is it when high school students say something, they mean it? How many of the people that said they would buy one, actually will? This is a pointless "study". - darny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13...and 100% of high school teachers are ready to confiscate them
- winter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11High school kids willing to lay down tons of cash for something hip and trendy? I would have never believed it.
- Wandel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Steve Ballmer also said: Developers, developers, developers, developers, developers!
- wozley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'd gladly fork over $500 as well, if I was a high school student with ***** else to pay for.
Damn you bills of life! - flyingfox23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It's not that hard to save up that much money between now and then. When I was in grade 12 I saved up for a digital camera that cost more than the iPhone and it only took me 3 paychecks.
- Adamacus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Well, actually, most high school students could afford an iphone if they started working a saving until it came out.
The minimum wage for under 18 here in Ireland is €5.18
Lets say a Student worked from 9-5 Saturday and Sunday, that's €92.96.
If they worked every Saturday and Sunday from the 14Th of April to the 3rd of June (iPhone comes out in June) ,
then they would have made €743.68, which, even allowing for taxes, is more than enough to buy an iphone if it was priced at €500.
Of course, the type of teenager who would blow €500 on a phone probably wouldn't work for 2 months in the first place. - duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Actually it's around $2000 for the iPhone with its restrictive service agreement and provider and to make it usable to its potential (2 year contract with Cingular Wireless - now AT&T)
- trer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9When I was in high school, I was lucky to have $3 in my pocket for a bean burrito and a sprite for lunch. $500 would have been like $10,000 to me back then.
Kind of makes me worried about whether these "teenagers" have any understanding of the concept of money. When I was working my crappy retail job at $6/hour part time, it would have taken me close to a month to make $500...and I sure as hell wouldn't have blown all of it on an iphone, which incidentally, i'd have to pay for the monthly service as well. $500 just gets you in the door, you'll be paying Cingular for at least a year or two. What high school student has that kind of cash flow (unless financed by parents)? - Gutzyshark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8They may put the $500 on the phone, but their forgetting the part where they have to add the data plan starting at $50/month for probably a 2 year term. Lets see how long that lasts when the first bill comes and the parents drop the data part of the plan. Whoops there goes the usefulness of the phone.
- arcterex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7At that age though, remember that you (probably) have a job bringing in at least gas money, and aren't (probably) paying rent, phone, utilities, a mortgage, or any of that nasty stuff that.
Not that I had that sort of cash at that age, but then again, they didn't have iphones back then :) (come to think of it, they don't have them now either....) - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Have to be 18 with ***** credit to get a contract. IE, unless it's a senior, the parents will be footing it for this phone -- period.
- RFdriver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't think anyone is "lambasting" them for wanting to use it. Hell, we'd all like to use one. I think the reason for all the harsh comments is that these kids are saying they would actually pay $500 to use one.
- tutivlahos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@anagoge
U$500 --->iPhone.
iPhone in 3 years = U$70
Worth it? Not really. - Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Until I started my real career, I would always place things in the perspective of how many hours of working at the local retail store it would take before I could buy it. Do I really want this $300 video card? That's like, working two weeks solid. *****. I guess not.
As a result: Well. Let me be honest, I STILL went into debt paying for college, and I and maxed out my $1000 starter credit card. But, I didn't go into nearly as deep as many of my friends who bought new cars on their Wal*Mart salary, went out to eat every night, and hit up the local dives multiple times a week.
Spending too much money as a kid is what being a kid with your first job is all about. You either learn from the experience or you don't - jcheng, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Just FYI, actually the highest-end Treo goes for $99 at the moment.
http://www.amazon.com/palm-Treo-750-Smartphone-Cingular/dp/B000KEP1RI/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-7010935-3335335?ie=UTF8&s=wireless&qid=1176226983&sr=8-1
And this is for a much shorter contract (6 months) than the iPhone will require (2 years). Unlike the iPhone, you can load whatever 3rd party apps you want onto the Treo. - Quick2822, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8iPhone, iPod, iPod Mini..
Apple knows it owns the "what you need to be cool" market. People aren't foaming at the mouth over the iPhone because of what it can do, the features it has, etc. They are all foaming at the mouth because it is an "i" product from Apple.
Let's see..
2-megapixel camera when others have 5-megapixel shooters on board (Nokia N95).
5-hour talk time: not enough battery life
No expansion slot. Go for the 8-gig model and that's it.
No 3G: EDGE? Come on..
No removable battery
No keypad - I had a remote control that had no keypad, it was probably the worst purchase I ever made.
The list continues, but it doesn't matter. I could list 100 things about why the iPhone sucks, but people will still buy it. But as long as Apple plays the "if you want to be cool you need our products" card, they could take a crap on your lawn, call it the iTurd, and people would buy it so they can bring it to school to show all their friends. Best Buy would be sold out of the iTurd, and you'd have to wait in line at 3am in the morning to get one. - solarweasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6the iphone still has a potential to suck... i mean it hasn't been released yet.
oh yeah, i forgot, our society runs on symbols of status. - hode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I applaud your work ethic, but some advice: you have your whole life to work and save. Enjoy the last years that you have free time. You'll miss them when they're gone.
