Your 10Gazillion:1 'dynamic' ratio means ***** all, as does the arbitrary viewing angle and response times printed on the pretty little sticker next to the logo.
These displays aren't used for playing Crysis, they're used by pros needing accurate colour reproduction. Personally i'd steer clear due to the bezel and glass front as i'm sure it would ***** with my spyder and the glare'd be a bitch but will you please STFU about your regurgitated 'apple tax' ***** on topics you know ***** all about.
/rant - 80hd, on 12/02/2008, -4/+26it powers on when the computer powers on. I looked and yeah, it really does seem like minimalism won. No buttons at all! How many products is this possible on? AppleTV, Airport, (more?) now this?
I set my displays to go to sleep when I move to the lower right corner so I don't think I'd miss it.

If the screen is dissipating 1W, it would use 8.76 kWH if left in standby for a year. At 12 cents per kWH, it will cost you a buck to have the display on and in "energy saver mode" for a year.
That said, we probably need a better definition of what Apple means by energy saver mode. theone3 is making the assumption that there's a significant difference between a person pushing the button on a monitor to turn it on/off, and a MacBook supplying voltage to a switch to turn the monitor on through the DisplayPort interface. Which I don't think is true.
I just looked at some Samsung screens and they all list 5W dissipated in standby. I'd be more interested to see what the typical power consumption of the monitor is. They don't actually remove power from the device they just put it to sleep in the same manner this does without any buttons. This works the same way as all others. Unless your monitor happens to have a large physical switch which actually disconnects the power.

These attributes are essential to anyone working with film or photographs. Also, as most diggers know, they are expensive because of their aesthetics.
I personally would spend $900 on this display, partly because of the color reproduction, but also too keep my workspace looking neat. I appreciate aesthetics, and am willing to put out a few extra dollars to be happy in that regard. - Balanced, on 12/02/2008, -0/+10She?
- digitalpencil, on 12/02/2008, -0/+10^ they do and those that are of similar quality are comparably priced. The problem though is the so-called 'Dell panel lottery' as they tend to ship the hi-end IPS panels at first and then quietly swap them out for PVAs once they've received good reviews.
All in all though, i've been impressed with both the IPS & PVA panels shipped. My point though is that for a display of this quality it's pretty well-priced (even cheaper than some others) and i'm getting pretty tired of retards trying to be clever with the same 'apple tax' ***** they copy and pasted from the other 20 articles they thought would be funny to spam. Especially when this display is not without legitimate flaws.. The trolls are going to whinge regardless, why not whinge about the glass front? the potential glare problem? the lost color accuracy that comes with increased saturation/deeper blacks? proprietary connectors? etc. etc.
When it comes down to it, it's just cool to badmouth apple which wouldn't be such an issue if people were actually pointing out the many legitimate flaws the company and its product line presents.
Instead though, all i see is the same regurgitated 'ha! no right-click/overpriced/starbucks/shiny' ***** that wasn't funny the other 6 billion times it was pasted into a comment thread..

Plus, when clients and business associates come to my office, I want the stuff on my desk to look stylish and coordinated, just like I want the furniture, wall treatments, carpet and window blinds to look stylish and coordinated.

If you can't afford it, don't buy it. It's just like cars. Some like the Corvette, and some models of the Vette can beat Lamborgini's for half the price. People still buy Lambos because they like the fit, finish, and styling of the car. They feel it's worth the extra price points.
On the other end, Apple does tend to take industry standard or slightly higher hardware and give it a fashionable and more appealing aesthetics. They also build hardware that hides unsightly seams, screws, and signs of manufacturing. It's a very "clean" look, and some people see it as no different than the furniture they put in their home. They want things to look and function a particular way. Does that make someone a fanboy? I don't think it particularly does. Like it or not, but it is undoubtedly very effective in bringing new tech to the market.
