- dharasick, on 12/02/2008, -12/+145Still not worth 900 bucks.
- SingleMaltWSKY, on 12/02/2008, -5/+72"But it's Glowing."
"That light confirms that it's off." - dmcbride6, on 12/02/2008, -19/+84It doesn't cost twice as much as its competitors.
Please find me another 24" IPS screen with LED backlighting for $900. Not to mention the extras that I would no longer need to worry about buying separately (ie: magsafe, usb hub, camera etc - hell, add in the apple design aspect as well) - 1longtime, on 12/02/2008, -4/+57I'm trying to decide what I hate more:
Apple fanboyism, or constant attacks against invisible Apple fanboyism. - Ommatidia, on 12/02/2008, -62/+105Q: HOLY *****! Apple is coming out w/a LED-back-lit display!?!
A: Yeah. So is everyone else.
Q: But, will it still use the same exact displays as its competitors?
A: Yup
Q: And it'll still cost more than twice as much as its competitors?
A: Yup
Q: Oh. So why will people buy it?
A: Because people can't think on their own, so they let Apple make their decisions; usually at their expense. The extra expense is called the "Apple Tax".
Q: So why don't you just explain to them what's going on? Maybe, they'll decide to stop paying the "Apple Tax".
A: See my last answer. - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -4/+32Whats with the internet and its fascination with taking things out of boxes?
- theone3, on 12/02/2008, -17/+42Hm. No power button. What point is there in owning 'the greenest laptop ever' if the only display that works with it is always chewing up power in standby mode.
- digitalpencil, on 12/02/2008, -5/+28FFS! TN panels and IPS are not comparable. Displays like this aren't the same as your crappy Belinea/Acer/Dell they are in the pro ballpark along with hi-end NEC/LaCIEs.
Your 10Gazillion:1 'dynamic' ratio means ***** all, as does the arbitrary viewing angle and response times printed on the pretty little sticker next to the logo.
These displays aren't used for playing Crysis, they're used by pros needing accurate colour reproduction. Personally i'd steer clear due to the bezel and glass front as i'm sure it would ***** with my spyder and the glare'd be a bitch but will you please STFU about your regurgitated 'apple tax' ***** on topics you know ***** all about.
/rant - 80hd, on 12/02/2008, -4/+26it powers on when the computer powers on. I looked and yeah, it really does seem like minimalism won. No buttons at all! How many products is this possible on? AppleTV, Airport, (more?) now this?
I set my displays to go to sleep when I move to the lower right corner so I don't think I'd miss it.
I'm very broke though so it's totally moot anyway ;) - centerblack, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2024 hrs * 365 = 8760
If the screen is dissipating 1W, it would use 8.76 kWH if left in standby for a year. At 12 cents per kWH, it will cost you a buck to have the display on and in "energy saver mode" for a year.
That said, we probably need a better definition of what Apple means by energy saver mode. theone3 is making the assumption that there's a significant difference between a person pushing the button on a monitor to turn it on/off, and a MacBook supplying voltage to a switch to turn the monitor on through the DisplayPort interface. Which I don't think is true.
I just looked at some Samsung screens and they all list 5W dissipated in standby. I'd be more interested to see what the typical power consumption of the monitor is. All Apple lists is the max while charging a MacBook... - 80hd, on 12/02/2008, -2/+21They claim 1w in standby
- CraigReed, on 12/02/2008, -1/+20Not really much an "unboxing" it just shows the box and then the product, still some really nice photos.
- dmcbride6, on 12/02/2008, -4/+23Whoa! I can't believe someone didn't already bring this up...
The cable is detachable! This opens up a ton of doors for what 'could' connect to it.
I might just send this Dell 3008WFP back afterall... - danielwsmithee, on 12/02/2008, -0/+16Most if not all displays use little push buttons to control power. They don't actually remove power from the device they just put it to sleep in the same manner this does without any buttons. This works the same way as all others. Unless your monitor happens to have a large physical switch which actually disconnects the power.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -1/+17It turns off when you disconnect or shut down the macbook. As with ALL monitors though, you need to unplug it from the wall to completely stop it from drawing power. This is not something specific to Apple.
- techdever, on 12/02/2008, -8/+22did you get peanut butter in your ethernet port again ?
- PleaseJustDie, on 12/02/2008, -1/+13I just hate uninformed arguments from both sides.
- kelchm, on 12/02/2008, -4/+16I still fail to understand why apple couldn't have put a DVI port on this. The unibody macbook/macbook pro are the ONLY systems it can be used with... How ridiculous is that?
- bjdowns, on 12/02/2008, -1/+12Apple displays are expensive because of their market. Their cinema displays are known for their color accuracy, and color profiles. These attributes are essential to anyone working with film or photographs. Also, as most diggers know, they are expensive because of their aesthetics.
I personally would spend $900 on this display, partly because of the color reproduction, but also too keep my workspace looking neat. I appreciate aesthetics, and am willing to put out a few extra dollars to be happy in that regard. - Balanced, on 12/02/2008, -0/+11She?
- harvinator24, on 12/02/2008, -2/+12If you want to be green you should be turning off your power strip.
- Beatmiser, on 12/02/2008, -1/+11So sorry that people liking a line of products offends you...
No wait, I'm not. - digitalpencil, on 12/02/2008, -0/+10^ they do and those that are of similar quality are comparably priced. The problem though is the so-called 'Dell panel lottery' as they tend to ship the hi-end IPS panels at first and then quietly swap them out for PVAs once they've received good reviews.
All in all though, i've been impressed with both the IPS & PVA panels shipped. My point though is that for a display of this quality it's pretty well-priced (even cheaper than some others) and i'm getting pretty tired of retards trying to be clever with the same 'apple tax' ***** they copy and pasted from the other 20 articles they thought would be funny to spam. Especially when this display is not without legitimate flaws.. The trolls are going to whinge regardless, why not whinge about the glass front? the potential glare problem? the lost color accuracy that comes with increased saturation/deeper blacks? proprietary connectors? etc. etc.
When it comes down to it, it's just cool to badmouth apple which wouldn't be such an issue if people were actually pointing out the many legitimate flaws the company and its product line presents.
Instead though, all i see is the same regurgitated 'ha! no right-click/overpriced/starbucks/shiny' ***** that wasn't funny the other 6 billion times it was pasted into a comment thread..
Can't we get back to an informed technical discussion rather than these childish-fanboy/hater slights? - drlha, on 12/02/2008, -4/+13Haters make me sick.
- MacParrot, on 12/02/2008, -0/+9Riiiiight, I'm sure no one at Apple thought about that at all
- locojones, on 12/02/2008, -3/+12Unboxing pictures are one of the most mind-numbingly stupid things the internet has ever come up with.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -1/+10Yeah for $900 I could build a pretty good machine and buy a 24" lcd monitor.
- UltraMegaFilms, on 12/02/2008, -4/+12mayo disc drive

There is always leakage current. - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -3/+11Rahr!
ITS ALL ABOUT THE PANEL PEOPLE!
I don't care if you're 26" was half the price and still throws out great colours, we're talking about a different grade of hardware. - gordeh, on 12/02/2008, -1/+8No it can't the dvi adapter is for going from mini displayPort to dvi not the other way. I've got several of them here at the moment.
- NorinRadd, on 12/02/2008, -1/+8Ok, I left your 2 cents on the table in the kitchen.
- Rudegar, on 12/02/2008, -1/+8don't they consume less power?
- DanBoodro, on 12/02/2008, -0/+7Back in the 90s
- Willravel, on 12/02/2008, -3/+10I expected a higher contrast ratio and response time. According to Apple it's 1000:1 and 14ms. That said, it's absolutely gorgeous and the ability to directly connect perfectly with and power the MB or MBP is really convenient.
- themonkman, on 12/02/2008, -3/+9I really don't understand why anybody cares who or why people will pay more for something that has the same hardware specs as a competing brand. If you can't afford it, don't buy it. It's just like cars. Some like the Corvette, and some models of the Vette can beat Lamborgini's for half the price. People still buy Lambos because they like the fit, finish, and styling of the car. They feel it's worth the extra price points.
On the other end, Apple does tend to take industry standard or slightly higher hardware and give it a fashionable and more appealing aesthetics. They also build hardware that hides unsightly seams, screws, and signs of manufacturing. It's a very "clean" look, and some people see it as no different than the furniture they put in their home. They want things to look and function a particular way. Does that make someone a fanboy? I don't think it particularly does. It does make them a little more discriminating about design, which is each persons personal prerogative. - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -3/+8I didn't realize having $900 made one "rich" these days. The Bush Economy has been worse than I thought...
- Gunshock, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5noob.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -1/+6Because that's Apple's business model.
- epsilonbass, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5This is great and all...
But my apple store has had this for months...
Out of the box and everything. - Falldog, on 12/02/2008, -1/+6I wish I was rich. I'd pick one up, hook it up to my iMac, and bask in the glow of money.
- YEEK, on 12/02/2008, -9/+14Maybe I've been lucky, but everything I've ever gotten with an Apple logo on it seemed to work right out of the box and kept on working trouble free until I decided to upgrade and replace it. Not so with other brands.
Plus, when clients and business associates come to my office, I want the stuff on my desk to look stylish and coordinated, just like I want the furniture, wall treatments, carpet and window blinds to look stylish and coordinated.
To me, it's worth a few extra bucks for the quality build and stylish design. - Akshunz, on 12/02/2008, -3/+8You cared enough to post a response. And I cared enough to post a response to your response. What is this world coming to?!?!
- singingfishy, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5This looks more like a photography class project than unboxing photos.
- GothAlice, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4Why is this person getting dug down? HDMI is very, very limited in use to the specifications defined by the standard: that of HD television signals. DP has much better handling of display resolutions, and can drive a LCD directly with much less circuitry on the monitor-side.
- darkciti2, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4It to rob us of our own unboxing when we buy the product.
They steal our joy from us before we can even enjoy it. Once you see certain things, you can never unsee them.
Damn you unboxers !
(that or it's to share the unboxing joy to people that don't buy the products) - Commodus, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4Your Hanns-G also doesn't have a good LCD panel for the size, 2.1-channel audio, a webcam, or DisplayPort.
- FredFredrickson, on 12/02/2008, -11/+15Why does anybody give a ***** about unboxing a monitor? Seriously, get a god damned life.
- herbiehancock00, on 12/02/2008, -1/+5Then don't. No one is asking you to. There are plenty of graphic professionals/amateurs that will pay for it because of Apple monitor's reputation for color accuracy.
- dibdidit, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4the holes are for the speakers...the sound need to get out somehow!
