- stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -9/+46One thing I love about the Apple Routers is how easy the "Airport Admin Utility" is to work with. I tried like crazy to teach my family how to login to a Linksys router with the browser and set up port-forwarding, etc. They just couldn't grasp it.
We bought an Apple router, used the Airport Admin Utility, and I didn't even have to explain it. - saleens281, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29100Mbit ethernet switch. WTF apple, remind me again why we're releasing any networking product in 2007 with 100mbit ethernet? *ESPECIALLY* with 300Mbit wireless...
- shyguy01, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33"Cables sold separately"
One thing that has always irritated me about Apple is the accessories - they could have at least chucked a cheap white ethernet cable in there.
And notice that the bottom pic says "(C) Apple Computer Inc" - these must have been manufactured a while back - mootymoots, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30can you attach usb hard drives to those models to make them wireless?
- Scruffydan, on 10/12/2007, -18/+33for gods sake, its a router...
if this were anyone but apple no one would pay attention - Choppy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26You don't understand, when something Apple makes comes out, we need to take dozens of photographs at various angles to satisfy our technolust.

Plugging in AirPort Extreme 802.11n High-quality photos
Turning on AirPort Extreme 802.11n High-quality photos - Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17You're not anymore special because you use Linux. Stop trying to be superior.
The price is crazy and somewhat unjustified to be SO high, but it does have a lot of things going for it, such as the 802.11n and printer/hard-drive sharing (when attached to it).
And on a side note, they, not ONCE, stole any code. The kernel is freely distributed and open source, and according to its original and current license, it can be modified at will, released at will commercially or non-commercially, and there are no restrictions on whether or not you have to release the code back to the community, though it is encouraged if you don't have any amazing trade secret or personal reason for withholding.
But please learn something before you talk so much *****. No one likes an elitist, and you don't even realize you're one. - super_spyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15this airport can work as a NAS, and leopard will suport that as your time machine backup destination, and it also has print serving, and another cool thing (unless you are my sister) is that you can block MAC id's at particular times from accessing the internet (which is why my dad picked one up).
- jbella, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I never bought an apple router before. I always thought they were overpriced. Yes they had more funtionality, but it was usually stuff I didn't need like a built in modem on the old airports. Then my parents called and wanted me to help them set up their new $50 no-name wireless router. If you have never tried to walk a non-technical person through this process, you wont appreciate how easy airports are to configure. After an hour of trying, I told them to go out and buy an airport base station. They never called me back because they were able to configure it by themselves. That in itself is worth the extra 100 dollars. :)
- DyDx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13You can.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The lack of Audio out is disappointing.
- bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12You can attach printers and hard drives.
http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/sharing.html
You can even attach a USB hub, so you can do both. - drn666, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Also, the Linksys and Netgear kit I believe is limited to 2.4ghz, whereas the Airport Extreme will run 802.11a on 5ghz. This is a huge deal for those of us who live in downtown areas flooded with 2.4ghz signals and get crappy 802.11b/g throughput as a result.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Any closer and the camera would be built-in.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17looks like an Apple product. what else is there to say?
- pleaseremove, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Yey, fanboy porn What the hell is the point of this article being dugg up? It doesn't tell us anything new or interesting.
- nace33, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I want to attach a hard drive to it.
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The DIR-655 is missing the file, print, and music server capability of the Linksys WRT350N and Airport Extreme, so it looks like it's priced accordingly.
- VANOS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@alteratti: You're being dugg up on every posting for that. Very nice hoax indeed.
And as for the topic... $50 WRT54GS + DD-WRT = happy. Although AirEx's hard drive and printer plug-in certainly makes me much less happy with that setup. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6> why someone would buy this instead of a Linksys or Netgear one,
> many of which come in at under $100 on NewEgg
The MSRP of the comparable Linksys WRT350N is $179, same is the Airport Extreme. Amazon sells it for $170, NewEgg for $160. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Good Catch- I didn't notice that. Did it (the name change) go through all of the regulatory BS yet?
- imnojezus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12As a self-proclaimed Mac fanboy, I completely agree with you. This "story" has nothing you can't get from the Apple site. And even then... close-ups of plug ends and the power LED? Really?
Lame. - SNIa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Am I the only network guy to wonder where the link lights on those ports are? Link lights are essential in troubleshooting wiring / connectivity issues (Layer 1 / 2) You narrow down your network problems pretty fast when you don't have a link light taking a second to check. I'm glad, at least, the MAC's are labeled on the device.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -22/+27While it no doubt looks cool I can't think of a single reason why someone would buy this instead of a Linksys or Netgear one, many of which come in at under $100 on NewEgg.
- VicHislop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5People that take "unboxing" pictures are only doing so because they're unable to properly report a technical review of the product.
- Avalontor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4this is about the packaging of a router. well done again digg, you are Heroes without equal.
- swilly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Most home/small business routers are designed with adsl/cable speeds in mind when choosing their CPU. While they may be able to handle 100Mb, I really doubt you will be getting 300Mb throughput out of the wireless (theoretical output is usually less than actual for this kind of application anyway) much less 1Gb.
Soekris makes embedded boards that are fairly similar to what you can find in a device like this. To be able to push out relatively cheap, low wattage devices you don't have the option of throwing hardware together that can handle 1Gb+ of packet flow.
Although they could have integrated some higher end chips solely for the lan ports, it most likely would have bumped the price out of their targeted market. - manicleek, on 10/12/2007, -25/+29Holy *****, someone actually took time out of having a life to take close ups of cable ends, plug sockets and a cd.
Did the person who did this actually think that his photos were gonna be any different to the promotional ones, or that his would be more important because they went that little bit further by taking pictures of the afore mentioned cables. Like nobody has seen those exact same cables on numerous other electrical goods.
"Holy ***** that CD is ***** round man! and it has a lable on too!!!!!"
Get ***** laid, all of you - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How many routers do you know have built in drive sharing over networks and a print server?
And secondly, take a look at the airport utility software and then comment. It's the best software for any router by far : http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2443 - brutalentropy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Haha... There was a torrent on demonoid the day Apple released the 802.11n enabler. It was easy to find, and the file was only like 250k!
Edit: Oop, got beat to the punch by Rice. - gooblegobble, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6No speaker input jack for airtunes like airport express?
or am I missing the obvious again? - jbella, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I guess that dispells the rumor that the reason why people pirate software is because of the high price.
- djsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3802.11n upgrade patch available via torrent in 5. . . 4. . .3. . .
- saleens281, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Targeted market? Exactly which market is that? Have you seen the prices apple charges for their hardware? They aren't exactly going after the walmart crowd... I don't think price is a big selling point, if it were, you could find far cheaper from dlink.
- creep303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3tech fetishes are retarded
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's been there for days. Come on man, heesh.
- antechinus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is insane. Who in their right mind thinks un-boxing some consumer electronics ***** is worthy of a news article.
- UncleCrapper, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Yeah, what the ***** is up with this "unboxing" fetish some seem to have? I can understand some pictures of the product, but the freaking box? Everytime I see an unboxing story on Digg I know that legions of cardboard kittens cry out in despair.
Can we please just put back in our pants over cardboard? - IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't feed the troll. Just block it.
- OhJay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@BassCadet
I'm not trying to justify the Apple premium; I'm just warning others against buying do-it-all pieces of crap boxes that only work out of the box if you're born lucky.
Feel free to buy Cisco for all I care.
@meatmcguffin
Exactly! - DirkBelig, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"Designed by Apple in California. Built by Prison Slave Labor in China."
You know what PC owners never post these inane unboxing galleries? BECAUSE WE'RE TOO BUSY ACTUALLY DOING WORK AND PLAYING GAMES WITH OUR PCs!!!!!! All you can do with Apple's overpriced pretty plastic is take pictures of it and tell yourself you're superior for paying extra. - Radan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Perish evil creature! This is exactly why I love Apple products. Everything is so perfectly synced in color and shape. Everything covers their color theme perfectly to the smallest cable. When you line up a set of Apple products it just looks beautiful.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This router is the *****. My only disappointment is 100Mbit WAN rather than 1000Mbit WAN. Otherwise, the built-in USB port (which a hub can be connected to) is really awesome.
- notorious., on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it possible to wall mount this base station like the previous models? Kind of a bummer if you can't.
- Zergo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Last I checked, Linksys a/b/g/n router's were around $165..... http://www.buy.com/prod/linksys-wrt330n-wireless-n-gigabit-gaming-router/q/loc/101/203973222.html?dcaid=17379
And that doesn't even include a USB port that will not only function as a print server, but also as a NAS storage device (if you plug in a USB hard drive). Apple's site even goes on to say that you can plug in a USB hub and use it as both NAS and printer sharing - how cool is that?
Kudo's to Apple for reinventing the router... - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I also noticed that there's no mention of Power over Ethernet anywhere. I was seriously considering a pair of these to distribute wireless in my house, but I'm sure as ***** not going to run power up there as well. Looks like I'll have to find another access point.
- wush, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Apple unboxing lameness descends to new depths. Behold, a power plug for a router!
