- Mizzike, on 04/16/2008, -1/+46Three cheers for the developer, but there's no way this thing's replacing the keyboard. You can point-and-peck a paragraph faster than You could ever scribble out three words with proper punctuation on that thing. Yes, I know, it's only in beta. What isn't in beta these days...
- MyNameIsJoe, on 04/16/2008, -0/+28Wow that looks so much easier than just typing it in.
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -0/+23I liked Graffiti. I would prefer mindreading, but it's ok as a second option.
- YME1280, on 04/16/2008, -0/+21I type much faster than that with the keyboard...
- dr0psy, on 04/16/2008, -1/+21eat up martha
- yokozuka, on 04/16/2008, -0/+18You and I too. And most people. Except the Hulk. He always ends typing things like HFHERDLLKOO0! and BNVESTGY REEGFHAWRDSX, Hulk Sent via iPhone.
- Echomote, on 04/16/2008, -0/+15I can type on my iPhone quicker than I can write out letters. The keyboard isn't particularly hard to adapt to.
- philodygmn, on 04/16/2008, -1/+10I wonder about Apple's built-in OS X handwriting and gesture recognition app Inkwell...?
http://www.apple.com/sg/macosx/features/inkwell/ - inactive, on 04/16/2008, -0/+7Sweet raptorjesus. This could be great for learning kanji.
- redrighthand, on 04/16/2008, -0/+7who'd thought it would make thumb typing look easier?
- deadnoob, on 04/16/2008, -0/+6Wasn't hand recognition one of the amazing things about the Newton?
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -1/+7It may be Graffiti, but I'm totally digging this.
- WiseWeasel, on 04/16/2008, -2/+8You may be trying to be facetious, but this really shines for alphabets like traditional Chinese, or Japanese Kanji, where you have tens of thousands of different characters, and it's not too practical to use a 26-letter keyboard. For those, the user can now simply draw out the character they want directly, instead of using phonetic and contextual cues to narrow down the character selection for each character they want to type. In those cases, I could see some serious productivity benefits. For roman characters, not so much...
- treed, on 04/16/2008, -0/+6Not to mention that I can "point-and-peck" at 30-40WPM as it is. I'm not sure if I ever got that fast with graffiti.
- chawkie, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5No, my son is also named Bort.
- eatupmartha, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5We need more "Bort" license plates in the gift shop. I repeat, we are sold out of "Bort" license plates.
- MookiBlaylock, on 04/16/2008, -1/+5It surprisingly worked alright but definitely a learning curve in the beginning.
- MookiBlaylock, on 04/16/2008, -8/+12Graffiti sucked so bad. :(
- Dumbledorito, on 04/16/2008, -1/+5BAH!
*fling!* - wellyuk, on 04/16/2008, -0/+4Who said it was amazing? Ok, the story started with "Holy egg freckles!" but nowhere does it say it's amazing. Where does it say in the story "it's amazing"? Hmmm?
- b0neman, on 04/16/2008, -0/+4If you little kids think *this* is bad, you should have tried handwriting recognition on the original iPhone, The Apple Newton. That nearly killed off Apple as anything but a curiosity back in the day. Still, with all it's faults, the Newton kicked some major aiish and if you don't believe me, watch both Under Sieges! Steven Segal and Apple Newtons owned the early 90's!
- eatupmartha, on 04/16/2008, -1/+5you talkin' to me?
- RustyJ, on 04/16/2008, -1/+5Yeah because who uses their fingers to write, you know? Just hold the pen in your mouth, like everyone else.
- WiseWeasel, on 04/16/2008, -1/+5Haven't you seen Batman and Robin? Holy cave-dweller, Batman!
- palehorse864, on 04/17/2008, -0/+3Eat up Martha.
- airj1012, on 04/16/2008, -2/+5Cool, but what a waste of time
- sr243, on 04/16/2008, -2/+5This is obviously useful for inputting Chinese, so don't be so quick to bash it just because it's not that useful for you.
- flarn2006, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3You forgot to mention mackerel, crap, and *****.
- yokozuka, on 04/16/2008, -2/+5Now updated with fingers-on video.
- eleven, on 04/17/2008, -0/+3Dugg for Egg Freckles - a very nice easter egg found back on the newton platform.
- Kazbaeden, on 04/16/2008, -1/+4It's terrible. It has fairly passable recognition for printed letters, but it can't remotely handle cursive or other languages (like chinese). It doesn't support handwriting learning or training either, so the engine never improves itself.
- palehorse864, on 04/17/2008, -0/+3I was a political prisoner!
- chubbybubba, on 04/16/2008, -2/+5I must adamantly disagree with the submitters article description.
Egg Freckles are Not Holy.
There are only 3 things that are holy:
1) cow 2) smoke 3) guacamole - wellyuk, on 04/16/2008, -1/+4I didn't expect "I had X on my Y over Z years ago!" comments so quickly! Well played, sir!
- orca94, on 04/16/2008, -1/+4The input system for Kanji using a keyboard is pretty easy. Every Kanji character can be represented in Hiragana (an alphabet) which has similar phonemes to western languages. You can essentially type the word in as it sounds(in hiragana which are easily typed up with a standard keyboard for example: a, i, u, e o, ka, ki, ku, ke, ko...) and then hit a key to convert it to a character. If the sounds correspond to several different possible Kanji the input software lets you choose which one you meant. Granted, it's not perfect but it's still faster than writing it.
- wallryan, on 04/17/2008, -0/+3that was awesome
- willgonz, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3I hope this makes it to the offical apps list.
- DontEatTheFish, on 04/16/2008, -1/+3" From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, surreal quality, like when you're on vacation in another city and "Jeopardy" comes on at 7 p.m. instead of 7:30. "
MADNESS - Thugacation, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2There will be no need to carry one of these around?
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e57/demasterk/mi ... - inactive, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2WTF? It already has that.
- pyrates, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2Yes this is good for writing out the Chinese characters, but that's about it. English is much better handled with the on screen keyboard.
- YodaJones, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2I was able to write faster with Palm's graffiti than tapping on the keyboard. I hope Apple will buy this technology and make it mainstream, if they don't already have something like this in the works.
- BigDog01, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2This is so fun to play with, but at the same time, it can get annoying.
- RedS0x, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2I had your mom on my bed over two years ago!
- inactive, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2Chinese is grossly inefficient language that the world should leave behind. The Japanese made the prudent move of simplifying this ***** alphabet into a modern, wieldy lexicon. If we all have to bend over backward to support the backward-ass Chinese alphabet, we might as well give up now.
- matt.rubin, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2palm graffiti for the win I got up to 50 WPM on that until i stopped using my palm
- StealthMonkey, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2I guess 1 have to practice knowing the difference between 1 and I.
- inactive, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2*****. Graffiti did not suck; it was a very effective (and, in retrospect, obvious) solution to the problem of handwriting recognition.
- liquisoft, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2It's cool but useless.
- inactive, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Exactly. When will people give up on the whole handwriting/pen-computing boondoggle? TYPING IS WAY FASTER THAN WRITING, and always will be.
