Hey Engadget, who is your photographer? Michael J. Fox? - seanpackage, on 10/14/2008, -10/+49Awesome.... a ***** $899 monitor....
- Sfenton, on 10/14/2008, -4/+43From the engadget comments
Dell 2408WFP: $619 ($280 less)
Samsung 2408WFP: $659.99 ($239 less)
NEC LCD2470WNX: $809.99 ($90 less) - cmjM67, on 10/14/2008, -12/+48yes, with the raped economy and thousands losing jobs, i think i will buy a 900 dollar monitor
because omg it's apple and i'm a douchebag - CMiYC, on 10/14/2008, -1/+28This is the shortest hands-on review I have ever read: "the screen looks painfully crisp."
That's it? - nutmac, on 10/14/2008, -2/+24Show me a cheaper 24" LCD with S-IPS panel and LED backlighting. Considering it has other niceties, such as beautiful design, 2.1-channel speakers, can charge MacBook/MacBook Pro/MacBook Air with MagSafe connector, and iSight camera, it is actually quite a bargain. Of course, if you are a casual user who doesn't know why S-IPS panel and LED backlighting matter, then this isn't your monitor.
- dagamer34, on 10/14/2008, -4/+24Anyone who thinks that a Cinema display is the same as your run of the mill 24" in monitor has NEVER, EVER set foot in a graphics design production facility. You do not just use any monitor you'd like for graphics work, otherwise that "white color" you thought you edited in Photoshop won't look like teeth but instead like piss.
And when looks are everything in the graphic design industry, IT DOES MATTER. - fahrvergnuugen, on 10/14/2008, -1/+16Its anything BUT proprietary. It's the new standard that is completely open and also royalty free.
- aceuk, on 10/14/2008, -1/+16DisplayPort isn't proprietary. It's a VESA standard. All you need are adapters.
- peterjmag, on 10/14/2008, -6/+21And as always, the Dell equivalent will not only be about $250 cheaper, but it will have more inputs and will most likely use the exact same LCD panel as the Apple.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -2/+15I'm not arguing in favor of the 900 dollar Apple display, but did you really just compare an Acer piece of ***** to an ACD? They're in a completely different class.
- igob8a, on 10/14/2008, -7/+20I'll stick with Samsung and LG, thanks
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -1/+13For $300 you can get a 24", LED backlit 1920x1200 screen with integrated webcam, mic, display port connection and USB hub?
Link please. - kelly, on 10/14/2008, -2/+13GordonFree,
To those of us that deal with color clarity, this monitor and its "gimmicks" are an absolute necessity. And at this price... it's a bargain. - sputza, on 10/14/2008, -1/+11I have the Dell and I'm very happy with it.
- Spire3660, on 10/14/2008, -4/+14Those Dell 2408s are the bomb! Simply destroys the Apple in terms of functionality, price and performance.
DVI x 2, DISPLAYPORT, VGA, Component, Composite, Svideo, Flash media reader and powered USB hub along with an optional integrated speaker. - SuperSunny, on 10/14/2008, -4/+14Not exactly, DisplayPort adapters exist
- aceuk, on 10/14/2008, -1/+11Acer LCDs don't use LED back-lighting though, so you can't really compare them to the new Apple display.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -11/+21The Dell 24" will rape this.
- allyant, on 10/14/2008, -7/+15I could buy a new PC for that price.
- Gir53457, on 10/14/2008, -1/+8I agree with dagamer34, The Apple displays are remarkably higher quality than the average display. They are, however overkill for the average consumer. That being said I'm buying one because it looks so damn sexy.
- drlha, on 10/14/2008, -3/+10Its not in the same league as Apple's new monitor however.
- roxgod666, on 10/14/2008, -6/+13$900? *****, i'll just buy another 40" TV and use that as my monitor. My Samsung 32" TV has amazing picture quality and only cost $750. I think Apple has gone insane
- Muler36, on 10/14/2008, -1/+8i find it funny how everyone of those photographs is just a mass of reflections, I wonder why people are complaining about it being glossy apple?
- M4tchstickM4n, on 10/15/2008, -2/+8When did a 24" monitor become a "Cinema Display"?
If I went to the cinema and they had a 24" screen I would ask for my money back. - kangy3213, on 10/14/2008, -4/+10overpriced, but awesome none the less
- MyNameIsGusto, on 10/14/2008, -1/+7HP LP2475w (S-IPS): $649
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/3820 ... - honkimon, on 10/14/2008, -1/+7And you are an ASS HAT
- MrM1yagi, on 10/15/2008, -0/+5There is a difference between the monitors. Most LCDs use either TN or MVA panels. NEC, Apple, Doublesight, and the Eizo are the only ones that sell S-IPS panels. NEC and Apple are the only ones that use newer H-IPS panels over the older S-IPS. If you want to compare this monitor to its rival, look at the NEC 2490WUXi. It's about $1100 but does not have iSight, Mic or USB so it's actually not a bad buy.
- mrcoldcow, on 10/14/2008, -4/+9Like, this would be cool to show people once or twice.
Then you realize how expesnive and impractical it is... - rotarychainsaw, on 10/14/2008, -2/+7I'm looking at this more as a dock for the new macbooks. Leave a mouse and keyboard plugged into the monitor and then you just plug in the 3 wires to the macbook and you got everything. Don't even need your power brick.
I'd like to think they will release some more mainstream monitors later with the same look and LED backlight, but DVI input or whatever the kids are using these days. - Aeaus, on 10/15/2008, -0/+5Wow, you are totally clueless aren't you? I happen to have that exact monitor sitting next to my 23" ACD (Previous Non-Glossy Generation). Let me just tell you they don't even come close to comparing, and yes they're both calibrated, let's take a look-see shall we at the simple color accuracy of WHITE...

The value comes in when you're doing anything involving color editing, it would be difficult to show the difference on the crappy iPhone camera, but anybody working with graphics would take the ACD over the BenQ. - drlha, on 10/14/2008, -2/+7No, for 1/3 of the price you're getting a ***** TN monitor. Please compare apples with apples (pun only slightly intended).
- skeletorcares, on 10/14/2008, -3/+8I'm sure it's still got the ***** texture that all apple monitors have. I'm a designer and I have to show it to other designers. Once they saw it, they hate the apple monitors too.
If you have an apple display, on the dock, if you have photoshop, waggle the icon back and forth (dock magnification and blue icons work the best). You'll see the monitor texture, then you'll never be able not to see it. - Tyrghast, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5I agree samsung makes a very nice monitor, I've had mine for a year and a half and the color is just as crisp as when I first got it.
- MyNameIsGusto, on 10/14/2008, -3/+8Yeah but it's TN and has some pretty bad backlight bleeding according to reviews.
- jeremec, on 10/14/2008, -1/+6Ouch!
- atgmac, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5Display Port is NOT proprietary. It was designed by VESA for god's sake.
I have an iMac and the glossy display is fine. Car windscreens are made out of glass - does that mean that drivers can't see where they're going because of their reflection? Your eyes can focus. I can only see a reflection when the screen is off. - incongruity, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5I have a 3 year-old cinema display and the only "texture" I see is an artifact of the on-the-fly scaling/translation that has to go on as you hover over the dock and move your cursor along to change the magnification. It's not anything inherent to the display. So, either you have a different issue or you're incorrectly identifying what you're seeing.
- pmc64, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5How is it sarcasm? That KDS is a pile of crap.
- sbluetruck, on 10/15/2008, -1/+5a 1080p tv doesn't have as high of a display quality as this though...
- themuffinman, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4Most people who actually care about the type of panel wouldn't touch a glossy display with a 10 foot pole.
- Buzzy, on 10/14/2008, -0/+4No, they do not sell adapters with a *female* Mini DisplayPort connector.
- nomore, on 10/14/2008, -0/+4Go an educate yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3You sir, are a douche.
- incongruity, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3How is that much different than what many of us do now? I plug my power cord (mag-safe), ethernet, mini-dvi and usb cables in, all on one side of my macbook and I'm sitting in front of my old-school 20 in cinema display, typing away on my external keyboard, working with my mouse. Same old, same old. 4 cables because I want a wired network, other than that, no appreciable difference, as I see it -- I guess, it saves me the $70 or whatever it cost me (my employer) to pick up the extra A/C adapter, but that's not too compelling, given the price of the new display!
- dagamer34, on 10/14/2008, -2/+5Not an LED LCD. LED backlights make it more expensive.
- stevejobs, on 10/14/2008, -1/+4All new Macs will have DisplayPort connections. Also there are adapters from most existing connector types to Mini-DisplayPort.
- dagamer34, on 10/14/2008, -3/+6The Dell isn't a LED-backlit LCD. They are more expensive you know.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3DisplayPort is a VESA standard. But what about Mini DisplayPort? I haven't seen anything that says that is standard.
