- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18iSquint can't rip directly from DVD. different apps with differect uses.
- smeager, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14The original developer has stopped work on Handbrake and a small team from the Forums picked up where he left off. Here is a link in the Handbrake Forums talking about this http://handbrake.m0k.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1742&sid=3bb0884475db06c1fd1367889d08d07f.
As long as they (someone) continues developing this great piece of software the happier I'll be. Thats the great thing about OSS. - jbrjake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It's running off rhester's home computer. We weren't prepared for a digg at this stage.
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6iSquint is cool and all, but it doesn't rip from DVD like Handbrake does, so I prefer the latter!
- sr55, on 11/13/2007, -2/+8PLEASE DO NOT MIRROR THIS.
This content is not meant for the public, it is NOT!!! finished and 100% unsupported.
If you want handbrake stick with the current builds available at http://handbrake.m0k.org/
When the new builds are ready they will be released to the general public. - jbrjake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah, it's a fork.
You'll also discover that last April's HandBrake release was actually a regression. It was the same code as the last release before that (from the end of 2005, I believe), built as a universal binary and given new version number. So this is really the first new code in users' hands for like a year.
No one really knows what's up with titer. He's doing wonderfully important work on a bunch of open source projects, but no one seems to be able to get a response from him when it comes to HandBrake... - lozadaj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I have been using iSquint for some time know and it works great on many different video formats. It will be nice to rip DVD straight to the new format if the quality is as good as iSquint. Here is a link to the freeware http://www.isquint.org/
- TheStoof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Main server is down; can someone post a mirror to the download? I'd like to convert a few DVDs to H.264 w/ 640x480 rez. for my iPod!
- mrbiiggy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i was wondering why this isn't at m0k.org.... handbrake hasn't been updated since april - so i assume these guys are forking it?
- Zal91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Does anyone have a mirror to the file?
I get a 503 error. - Freps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Server went "down for maintenance" in the middle of my download...grrr....
- torpedobird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@muzzy
Try dropping it into vlc and renice vlc to somewhere around -18 or so. I can get flawless playback on a dual G4/450, and that is at a full 1000kbps, dvd quality. Hopefully scaling back even just a little, combined with renicing, should play on a single.
TBird - laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh teh no!!! Software that's going to smash my monitor, break my couch and steal my dog... ;_;
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The 5G and 5.5G iPods include a .h264/mpeg-4 decoder chip made by Broadcom, as the iPod cpu wouldn't be able to decode it in real time.
- jbrjake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You'll also find that this new release uses a much newer copy of the x264 encoding library, leading to increased speed, at least on PowerPC processors.
Expect a lot more new stuff in the future, development is finally coming together. - Sanitarium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Mirror anyone?
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So can the current (5.5G) iPods playback 640 x 480 on the iPod screen or does it downscale to 320 x 240 for the iPod screen and playback 640 x 480 when connected to a TV?
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, any 5G iPods can play 640 x 480 video from day one (when those videos were introduced in the iTunes Store, after updating the firmware)...
- lozadaj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The later is correct, but the 5G also supports the same video with the latest ipod update.
- kenthorvath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I tested this, and it works. Finally, full resolution to output to my TV. Video appears a tiny bit washed out, though. I'm not sure if that is a result of the LC 3 Baseline mode requirement. Is there anyone who's tried it who can comment how the conversion compares to Apple iTunes movie downloads?
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FINALLY... Thank you!
- iching, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thanks for the update info or I wouldn't have known about it so quick.
I haven't tried it out yet but my old version was 0.7.1 and this is 0.7.1a2 so it will be interesting to see what improvements there are visually when I burn another DVD onto my iPod. - smeager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've used iSquint and while its a very good piece of software you have to buy VisualHub for more advance features. I don't use Handbrake to encode video for my iPod (since I don't own and iPod w/Video) but use it to back up my dvd movies, at full res and quality, to a hard drive for use with my media center.
- jockser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and whats best for windows ?
- jtjdt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2iSquint is good for everything else. Handbrake is good for DVD's.
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No, 0.7.1 has been out for a while...
- BrewmasterC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I downloaded "Instant Handbrake" for my mom. One click ripping, just make sure you select the proper language. I forgot to mention that and she took her "Murder She Wrote" videos with her on vacation in French. :)
- Zal91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am currently downloading, as soon as it is finished I will mirror it.
I can onl pull ~4KB/s from the server, be patient. - 4g3nt_Smith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Intel Build .0.7.1a (SVN revision 92:latest)

H.264 is an MPEG-4 specification. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264. In fact, BluRay and HD-DVD both support the H.264 format--while I'm not certain, but I believe that they support both H.264 MPEG-4 and DVD-Video Standard MPEG-2 [and a variant at a higher resolution/bitrate]. MPEG-4 has also been implemented by other formats, including, but not limited to DIVX, Real, and WMV, but the H.264 format is the most "standards compliant".
H.264 is considered by most the next major video codec, and for good reason. It can encode video at great bit rates relatively cleanly--or at high bit rates with amazing quality. But, like all things... Crap In, Crap Out. No matter what you do, you can't make that reality TV look better with H.264. ;) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Mirror?
- sr55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Be patient please ;)

Where is the updated Instant HB? - jtwilkins, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Who are you the Grinch?
- walkingmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone know why we can't access the page? now it seems to be password protected. anyone? anyone? bueller? bueller?...
- dynaflash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The rev you would want should be handbrake 0.7.1a5, You guys should note the "a" in the name. As in alpha release. In other words, it was never meant as a public release but more for developer testing. A public release is coming and we werent really ready for this. Please be patient, we are ramping up our infrastructure to support it.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nice job Handbrake team! This is really the best software for ripping DVDs for the iPod, and to compressed formats in general, and it's free to boot! This was the last big problem for video iPod owners, and now it's fixed.
- muzzymate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I wish my 500Mhz G4 Powermac running Frontrow could decode these higer resolution H.264 to watch on my TV. It's sad when a little $250 device can do things your $2000 system a few years ago can't.
Either way, Handbrake and Instant Handbrake kick ass and make my PC friends envious. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks guys.
- lozadaj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's works great on Youtube and Google video
- Cander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice. Will try it when I get home tonight.
- kenthorvath, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4File size looked to be about 80MB for 10 mins at 1000 kbps. I don't know how that stacks up to other formats, but I'm also ripping a 60 min title right now to 350MB at 800 kbps. All in all, not too bad.
- DigitalN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that is what backups are for
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iSquint is the bomb for converting SWF and FLV though...
Is there a mirror of handbrake.zip? I can't get the thing to download, their servers are taking a huge hit right now... - sr55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Oh teh no!!! Software that's going to smash my monitor, break my couch and steal my dog... ;_;"
No but if it were to corrupt data on your hard disk and trash your current OS install one might be rather unhappy... - wminkstein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love handbrake
- Zal91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gahh, sever went down.
Someone please upload to la.gg, - kagayaki1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@starbird
It's last item in the directory listing. I cannot 100% confirm it too has been updated, but since it's sitting there with today's date, I can only assume until I get home to look. - Zal91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gahh, I will just compile from SVN.
- yichen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1where are the others?
