I can now lay in bed knowing people are still to cheap to buy a mac. - skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, so my hacked osx86 box gets 10.4.3 before my real mac does!?
amazing... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is an update.
How do I install the os first?
I found this link http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Install_On_A_Partition_Simple_And_Accurate
But cant find the link to the OSx torrent.Do i need to have a dvd writer? - sportman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, pretty damn kool
- jojoyohan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats awsome.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quote: Now how about making it so I don't have to have friggin SSE2 or SSE3 to run it?
That will never happen. You need at least SSE2 to run OSx86. Sorry. - reverb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2digg.com: your source for software piracy news.
- ba747heavy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome! Downloading on my Mac Mini.
Heh, I am easily amused. - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Your god is an awesome god.

- zhLilDoggi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh, its pretty cool.
- Trepan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, you'll do what everyone else does. Install it, surf the net for a bit, say 'cool' and then become bored and uninstall it.
- xbmcrules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does this have video acceleration?
- Retrograde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even before the real version? That's hilarious!
- jacob019, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use osx86 as my primary os, this rocks!!!!
- insertnamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0man I've been waiting for this for so long now
- mikataur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> i wanna have sex with whoever made this bad ass up...call me at 845-mactosh
Nah, save that for whoever hacks FRONT ROW to run on OSx86 10.4.3... (With x86 iPhoto, DVD Player, iTunes, and QuickTime 7.0.3 for playing H.264 videos.)
Then I could build a kick ass home theater system out of cannibalized PC bits I've got lying around.
(Although, I'll still buy a Mac Mini if Apple updated it to include Front Row + a remote controller. C'mon Steve, you know you want to.) - j.carcinogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ba747heavy
this will not update 10.4.1 for the PPC. - Cybrwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AeonTorpor,
That's a negatory, "ghostrider!"
Apple is a hardware company 1st and foremost! Hardware not only cuts the mustard, but it butters their bread! Apple will not risk becoming a software company until the world proves to Apple, via theft x 1 Million, that people want OS X so badly they are willing to steal it, via any method.
When 1 Million people are running OS X on beige boxes, then Apple will reconsider becoming a software company, and when that happens, Steve Ballmer is going to have a cow! - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now how about making it so I don't have to have friggin SSE2 or SSE3 to run it?
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats because your a spazcake!
Good work though! will definetly be getting this! - deadlychicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If you're running AMD, fat chance of getting a usable system out of it. But if you're running an intel machine its actually working well. (Ironically it seems that Dell's work the best)"
What are you talking about? My Athlon 64 is doin' just fine. - NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+012 or 67 .. either way, nice job.
- DemiGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK So maybe I'm naive but how was it updated to 10.4.3??
It is not even out yet. Is it a phantom version? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"nice DRM protecting it from hackers." - thats funny.
- klaupacius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this runs amazing on my girls dell and she loves it, "so much cooler and nicer to look at than windows". havent used windows for months.
- nacs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you want OS X this bad, WHY NOT BUY A BLOODY MAC?!
Can't believe people are stupid enough to waste time on this crap when they could just go buy the real thing in the store that works out of the box. - republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this very hard to do?
- farmsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OSX is based on the Mach micro-kernel for Darwin. I don't know how this is meant to be a bloated kernel. The only thing that Linux has close to this is GNU/Herd (which as far as I know is still a while off being released).
I am very impressed with OSX in general (software engineering background) but there are still some things that need work (native 64bit to take advantage of the G5 for one). I have had a look at OS x86 and will continue to use it as I can't afford a G5 Power Mac. If they get this onto some serious AMD hardware (dual processors) or Dual Xeon's (which would be great as well) it will be able to fly. From what I have seen on my PC with limited drivers, it has the potential to fly!
I must say OSX has a slightly Linux feel to it but I haven't had an experience like this with any Linux distro (been checking them out for a long time and always leaving for some obscure reason). I think the best thing Apple could do is open up OSX to the PC market. It has the potential to be a big competitor to Windows. It will be interesting to see what happens when Windows Vista comes out.
Bottom line: if I had the cash I would by a Mac (for my second computer) but I can't. Apple hasn't released a (retail) version of OS x86 so I can't buy it. I will keep using the leaked version (as a second platform and maybe for migrating) until such time as it is released. Much respect for the community and the work put in to make this possible!
P.S. Finally starting to see all this Mac v PC ***** for what it really is: people arguing for arguments sake. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. It is just like people hating Microsoft for being Microsoft. They are what they are and they do what they do well. Respect where respect is due. - JetwingX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's sad that it is coming out for PCs before my mac. but thus is the irony.
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone have a torrent or direct download?
Direct Download preferable. - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Alright, for those of you too lame to not read the story and follow some links: http://riceness.net/OSx86/update.php is where you'll find what you need to get going.
:-) - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait a sec, I thought Apple sucked ass and everyone was waiting for Apple to die and bugger off.... Riiiight!
skyhighrockets, you have a hacked version 10.4.3 I'll have it this coming week, officially supported by Apple. And while you have to jump through hoops to install it, I'll just hit Software update.
Nacs don't worry. This version of OS X has a time limit built in and will expire on a certain date. And when Apple release the official copy for X86 it will have nice DRM protecting it from hackers.
Remember kiddies, buy Apple hardware when it comes out. - anarchy99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its not 10.4.3
its a patch that updates safari ,improves ui speed on non Core Image boxes and other things its made from files from the10.4.3 adc release but doesnt update it to 10.4.3 your version will stay 10.4.1 but it will have SOME of 10.4.3's improvements - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some days I just wish Jobs would see the light and realize that he's playing a stupid game with Microsoft, the software market and the hackers. I'm sure if he asked Woz, Woz would tell him to go forth and inherit the world as is the right of his birth sign, Aquarius... (or something like that).
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mrfx
You can clearly see his fear. And all Linux and MS Trolls should fear Apple. Once they make the transition to Intel, it's going to be a totally different world. You seriously think the iPod phenomenon was just
some kind of freakish luck? Heh... we'll talk again in 7 months. - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Coming back and looking at this old digg, I want to say that the above comment was pretty awesome. Let me quote it:
"P.S. Finally starting to see all this Mac v PC ***** for what it really is: people arguing for arguments sake. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. It is just like people hating Microsoft for being Microsoft. They are what they are and they do what they do well. - bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"No, don't point me to the Mac Mini. My four year old PC is faster than that thing."
Doubt it.
I love the Mac envy in people who constantly disrespect them, whether it comes in the form of kiddies running hacked up versions of OS X on cheap Dells as their primary OS, or the people who skin their lame Windows installs to look like OS X (it always looks bad).
For those who say Macs are too expensive, let me translate for you:
"I want a Mac so bad, but my parents won't buy me one and I'm too lazy to get an after school job." - AeonTorpor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0eee.. by Box i mean... shelved software.. like at your local computer store.
- AeonTorpor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, I might be really behind things, but is Apple gonna actually release a Box, for x86 hardware, and compete 1:1 w/ MS? Cuz that'd be sooo sweet.
- lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If you're running AMD, fat chance of getting a usable system out of it. But if you're running an intel machine its actually working well. (Ironically it seems that Dell's work the best)

WOW its Linux with a working, GUI, that I can get my work done, and play some games on!!! What a concept, you *****! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1> Can't believe people are stupid enough to waste time on this crap
some of us waste our time with this "crap" because we have several thousand desktops for which we're contemplating the ramifications of switching over to OS X... which, of course, isn't going to happen unless Apple does a beige box release.
>>No, don't point me to the Mac Mini. My four year old PC is faster than that thing.
> I love the Mac envy in people who constantly disrespect them
My girlfriend almost kicked her mini to the curb and pulled her P3 out of the closet when the mini became far too slow after less than 6 months of use (turns out all it needed was a memory upgrade). All she does is browsing and e-mail, yet this *IS* the experience and impression that Apple leaves their novice users with. In this regard, Apple may have fscked themselves with the mini.
> Linux with a working, GUI, that I can get my work done
Linux is a fragmented market with too many players. No doubt that Linux and OS X could be peers, but the unfortunate reality is that they are not and not for the technical reasons you might imagine.
> Apple [...] release a Box, x86 hardware, and compete 1:1 w/ MS?
No... because Jobs is a temperamental art fag sissy boy who doesn't take failure well, Apple is going to decline to compete with Microsoft 1:1. It's really a matter of corporate psychology rather than good business sense (Apple shareholders take note!).
> When 1 Million people are running OS X on beige boxes,
> then Apple will reconsider becoming a software company,
Problem is that Apple has no way to measuring just how big the beige box demand actually is or might be. What Apple seems to not understand is that beige box OS X will *NOT* eat into their hardware sales. This is not an Apple or the Clone scenario. Until beige box OS X is legitimate, business will *always* default to the lower cost alternative (on the other hand, you would not believe how easy it is for businesses to justify spending $60 to $120 per user for software) and individuals will continue to lap-up whatever Microsoft ***** into their food dish via PC manufactures.
If Apple is correct in their assumption that people will pay for superior design, then they have absolutely *nothing* to fear from the beige box market. They got screwed once with the clones, but I suspect they didn't realize just how much money there was to be made in software (the clones were not commodity items; they were simply lower cost than the hardware apple made). Selling an operating system to the beige box market is about capturing market share (playing catch up very, very quickly) and using the general crappyness of the hardware in the beige box market to drive sales of their superior product.
> and when that happens, Steve Ballmer is going to have a cow!
Steve Ballmer should be having a cow and ***** bricks right *NOW*. If he's not having a cow and ***** bricks, then he's a crap CEO. He has less than 8 months until all hell breaks loose (of course Apple should be banging their head against a brick wall for missing out on the Christmas '05 sales opportunity... hype has a definite window of opportunity and god knows what Christmas '06 is going to look like). - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"If you want OS X this bad, WHY NOT BUY A BLOODY MAC?!"
Too God damned expensive.
No, don't point me to the Mac Mini. My four year old PC is faster than that thing. - Takuro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Whoever managed to do this is my god!
