- albiniak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20that's so dope!
"The Mac Mini connects to the Internet and to my iTunes library through my home wireless network. Each morning the computer launches a script triggered by an iCal alarm. While cueing up a music playlist, the script automatically gathers images, crops them in half with GraphicConverter and launches a slideshow with PhotoPresenter, a nifty little $8 shareware program with lots of snazzy transitions. The remote can pause or cycle through the pages."

- robwhite1979, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7i would buy one of these if I could, it would look great next to my vintage coke machine that dispenses cans of iPhone ads...
- hanskainz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Here is the first mac mini digital newsstand video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeCvgEZDG14 - halik, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Hardly a "hacked mac mini"... more like "a computer". Pretty neat idea, though, if you have a living room of that style.
- nectom, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6because diggtards think everything you change is a "hack"
- sefs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5He should put a laser printer in, and have it feed out the story that is shown on the screen when you hit the coin return button on the vending machine. Sweet mod though.
- slapout, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5And ya'll thought everyone in Alabama was a bunch of hicks.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I was about to laugh at this idea until I saw the video, that's actually a very cool idea. I'd like one of those for sure. It could probably be done for cheaper though, using an old pc or something... mind you the inside of the paper box would be much more cramped.
- crimson117, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3How does he get the news articles from websites to look like printed newspapers? Most news websites don't make available scans of their actual printed front pages.
Found the answer: http://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/default.asp?bkgd=blue - doolittle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Cool mod, but why would you want to hide the sleek mac mini case in a hardware mod such as this? would be excellent for ITX based project.
- the_d, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It would be cool if there was a USB port near the coin slot so you could plug in a thumb-drive, and get a copy of the virtual newspaper in PDF form.
- UtahApocalyse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I would love that software setup just on my computer.
- jtb4, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2RSS is what I thought about too. I'm thinking different channels that cycle through news.
- shadowspawn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@sefs
And put a mod like that at an airport bar, and let it accept nickels, and use recycled paper. Guaranteed to draw attention (and drinks) - crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2RTFA. It takes screenshots of news websites and then crops them. And I'd like to see you do better.
- danielrh9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm fron Huntsville, AL. You'd be shocked to see the techie ingenuity of a redneck with the know how and some time to kill. That's the "New South" for you. Instead of using duct tape and sticks for some sort of bass fishing or duck hunting contraption, it's more commonly RSS and Mac Mini's for something like that news stand.
- cRaCKh0rN, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Awesome! Glad to see Apple Script put to such good use
- afred, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It looks like the news stands in the movie "Children of Men."
- allaboutdatiki, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Rosebud ...
- mrpink.137, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2That's cool, but can you double-tap to zoom?
- BAMAToNE, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I love how every headline had to do with Alabama football, lol. Roll Tide!
- crawf061, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Suck the nuts... respectfully
- troutsoup, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i had a news vending machine and had the idea to put hamsters or fish in it so you could see them out the front.
of course not both. or maybe a well trained hamster with scuba gear? - jman8888, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Id buy a newspaper from that
- fernB, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2How are the homeless supposed to keep warm now?
- elsupergringo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Thank you jim1977 and seraph82 for having some sense. This project is a waste of time and energy. I would compare it to a pile of poop that a bunch of intellectuals call "art"
- BigMike, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Bonus points for using cover stories of Auburn's continued dominance over Alabama - War Eagle!!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2What? Why would I even want such a monstrous novelty in my lounge? Do I live in a 30s themed speakeasy?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Wait, what next? Seems like a large investment in terms of time and money for something to sit there and show 1/3 of the frontpage of a bunch of newspapers. Those transitions between images are gaudy as hell too.
Also, this would be hailed as just plain dorky if it wasn't a Mac. What gives? - cusoman, on 10/11/2007, -10/+6Cool, not really a hack, but I like the idea.
Addendum:
Step 1: Be CLIFFosakaJAPAN
Step 2: Submit random story regarding Apple Inc. universe
Step 3: ????
Step 4: Profit! - AlphaPrime, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Quartz Composer, not AppleScript.
- AlphaPrime, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1That isn't a hack, its Quartz Composer tapped into an RSS feed, plugged into an LCD screen inside an old news stand. Nothing really special here. Now if it was set up like the Apple RSS reader in 3D and all, then I'd be impressed.
- elscotty, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Cool, but this isn't a hack. How is making your Mac mini run a script that runs some software and displays information on a monitor a "hack"? Seems like the computer is being used normally.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -10/+1Oh, and how this tasteful device proved us wrong.
Get back in the field, *****.
