- RudeTurnip, on 10/05/2008, -0/+24AppleTV is my main source of video entertainment. It has a built-in video podcast directory and lets me search for videos on YouTube. This is the device I use to watch Diggnation and every other Revision3 show. I've enabled SSH on mine so I can install additional software, like plug-ins to let it play more video formats than initially supported. The form factor is ideal for a set-top box...tiny, quiet and out of the way.
- threemagic, on 10/05/2008, -3/+24I should have known. Instead of an informative list of responses... there's just the "we hate apple stuff cuz you can't play games on os x vs don't show us what's wrong with our apple religion" comments..
- jmreid, on 10/05/2008, -3/+18I love my Apple TV. I switched from XBMC a while ago when I started playing 720p files. Does a great job.
- alex7575, on 10/05/2008, -0/+15Funny how people are quick to bash something they don't own, or something they don't know how to get the most of it (aka use it)
- roblawton, on 10/05/2008, -4/+19I only got my Apple TV a couple of months ago, and absolutely love it!
My missus even runs through Podcasts and TV Episodes, and we use this more than regular TV now!
In the centre of my Apple-Orientated home, it works brilliantly!
I'm gonna have a play with Boxee later to see if it can make it any better... - alex7575, on 10/05/2008, -3/+16I got invites for Boxee: givemeboxee at live.com (for the first 5 to reply to the email)
(hotmail just updated their interface and it looks awesome, my junk email account never looked so great!) - TurdZilla, on 10/05/2008, -2/+11This kicks ass!!! and takes the hacking out of hacking the box :-)
- inactive, on 10/05/2008, -0/+9and this, kids, is how you pwn yourself
- alex7575, on 10/05/2008, -1/+10So I'm getting dugg down for giving away Boxee alpha invites?
A "thanks man" would've sufficed.
PS: I thought there was a limit to how many invites I can give out. I'll keep sending invites until I get tired of it. - abbathdoom, on 10/05/2008, -1/+9Boxee is the future! The app is really pretty, it has all the power of XBMC without any of the unintuitiveness, it will eventually have a really powerful social network attached to it, and its completely open source. I love it.
- alex7575, on 10/05/2008, -1/+8Now I'm getting dug down for bitching about being dug down...
- EBFoxbat, on 10/05/2008, -0/+6My Boxee on OS X won't play Apple's protected content.
- fr0chu, on 10/05/2008, -1/+7Why not just go for XBMC for mac? 'Atlantis' is in Beta 1, and is quite stable (at least under Linux, I can't vouch for mac). There's instructions on the xbmc.org website for installing on aTV ( http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=XBMC_for_Mac_on_Apple_ ... ), pretty similar, actually, to installing Boxee. Also XBMC Live has been out for a while for PC's, if you're looking to build a HTPC around XBMC.
Oh, and I don't know why anyone would dismiss the aTV so flippantly. At around $240, even if you're just using it for XBMC, it's a steal compared to what it costs to build an equivalent stand alone box that plays 720p. Too bad it can't handle 1080p, at least under XBMC, but it does upscale. - CarnivalOfDust, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5I dugg you down to see if you comment on getting dugg down for mentioning that you got dugg down for bitching about being dugg down.
I wanna see how deep the rabbit-hole goes! - alex7575, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5My head just assploded...
- abbathdoom, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5IMO XBMC just feels like its an app made by geeks for geeks. Boxee has much the same features as XBMC (and can share plugins), but it has a certain amount of sophistication and intuitiveness which I think makes it more suitable for mainstream users. If nothing else, the GUI is really pretty in a way XBMC just aint.
- dagamer34, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4@seefood73
AppleTV isn't powerful enough to do 1080p. Plus, all of the HD content from the iTunes store is 720p anyway. If you're streaming 1080p content, get a media PC to do it for you. - inactive, on 10/05/2008, -1/+5People are actually taking your comment seriously?
He's a troll, don't feed him. - topgigmedia, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4apple TV has emerged as my main video and audio playback source for our main entertainment center. Another case of someone bashing something they have never probably tried before. Simple blind ignorance.
- alex7575, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4Boxee and XBMC have different approaches to media. Boxee ads a social aspect to the interface, and makes it much easier to add "channels" from RSS feeds from video sites.
- fr0chu, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4Wow, I guess I should have read a little further and found out that Boxee is a fork of XBMC for the Mac. Still, XBMC is available to anyone right now, so if you can't get an invite and/or don't care about the eventual social functions of Boxee, it is an alternative.
Thanks alex, I was looking at things kind of narrow-mindedly, I just assumed that everyones media needs begin and end with XBMC as mine do. - nesagwa, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3PLEX. Runs on OSX, based on XBMC, runs 1080 on just about any mac hardware.
- JkEw, on 10/05/2008, -1/+4Seriously, I can't hear mine at all! It's super quiet.....
- zaren, on 10/05/2008, -1/+4Bear in mind, kids, that Apple just pushed out Apple TV 2.2 update last week, and that page says upgrading to 2.2 kills the Boxee hack. You can re-install it, but the upgrade kills it. So, if you're gonna run out and install this (if you can get an invite - anyone have an invite?) make sure you've already upgraded to 2.2, or you'll have to install it again. So if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna make sure I'm updated.
- cosequin, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3invites are available here:
http://invites.mashable.com/site/boxee - gamerzfuse, on 10/05/2008, -3/+6Xbox Media Centre is still better.
- fanclerks, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3Thanks for the invite!
- naked_violence, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2http://forum.boxee.tv/
I haven't tried MKV w/subtitles yet, but I'm sure someone has. - craterburnsu, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2I recently got a beta to boxee for my macbook pro. Ever since installing it it takes over for front row, which is fine, but it also bogards the apple remote signal. I can no longer control VLC or iTunes with the apple IR remote. Anyone have a solution to that beyond uninstalling boxee?
- katsanes, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2meh, try try again worked!
- craterburnsu, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2Thank you kindly, that saved me a headache.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2Mac Mini FTW! I have a Mini hooked up as my HTPC and it works just fine. The thing doesn't eat more than 85w.
- keiths, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2I found out about Boxee about 4 days ago. Went to the signed and signed up. About 2 days later I got my invitation from them.
- thashiz, on 10/05/2008, -1/+3I have 4 invites remaining. brandon[at]stargazerbook.com
- vulkanr, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2
apple tv doesnt.
boxee on appleTV does.
however - keep in mind that 720p on appletv is not really playing well. - TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2Please. There are always hackers tweaking products and hacking them no matter how good the features are. Most of the market is just fine with the AppleTV's functionality. Like any other product, there's a small subset of users who will tweak and play with it.
- JSolo, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2Better is such a generalized term, unfortunately. What I do like about WMC is the ability to playback any codec in the world versus the very limited codec support of the AppleTV.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2Meh, I just use a Mac Mini instead. Much greater flexibility and I got this one for a damned good price.
- alex7575, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2No prob, enjoy!
- sexybobo, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2Boxee is based on XBMC
- Wander, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2I had paid for patchsticks before, and had used NitoTV, but ever since 2.0 Nito just doesn't work right. Finally the same interface that I've been used to on the old Xbox is out, and I can tell you it works 100%. What a difference. Now my AppleTV rocks!
If anyone has an invite for boxee, please send me one to boxeeplease at miamisky.com - CarnivalOfDust, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2Missed the 5min edit slot. I'd obviously like to point out that I'm talking about the Xbox version. I have no idea what the Mac version is like... Though I've heard good things.
- gadgetguy, on 10/05/2008, -1/+3Boxee isn't a fork, it's working in harmony with the XBMC code base and team.
Here's a few videos on the UI differences, interviews with Team XBMC etc; http://boxee.blip.tv
720p is good on Apple TV, but 1080p needs some GPU decoding help, which is next on the team's list to do: http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=Hardware_Accelerated_V ...
We need GPU developers! - digitalpencil, on 10/05/2008, -1/+3tbf dig1x, x360 media center's ace but it's nowhere near as good as XBMC.. Plex runs on my mini and 1080p flies happily. Best of all though, you can search bittorrent from within plex, pulling data from various trackers and downloading through transmission in the bg. Once the files complete, the built in scrapers check titles against imdb/tvdb, retitle the file and download all associated artwork, cast, ratings plot synopsis etc and archive it on a 3TB linux server in the back.
You can even get it to download your fav shows automatically and all without having to get off the couch.. As i said x360 is a great media center but in the same way that aTV sucks, it can't match the extensibility of XBMC. - mrBitch, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Hypocrite much?
So... Apple TV hacking sucks but hacking XBOX to run XBMC is "awesome"?
You are a rabid idiot. - mrchin, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1I've installed XBMC but it's crashing. Just goes to Apple Logo upon launch. Whereas as my Boxee launches, but I don't have the invite yet to login.
Damn, and I've got the Aeon theme in there too, waiting. - lajolla5380, on 10/23/2008, -0/+1Is there anyone out there with an invite? I would LOVE to put a youtube playlist on my Appletv!
If so, please contact me via jonah.net - mrBitch, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1@digitalpencil RE: " x360 media center's ace but it's nowhere near as good as XBMC.. Plex (Mac XBMC) runs on my Mac mini and 1080p flies happily.

Holy crap, was that built into Plex or did you have to set that up as scheduled scripts running in the background? - jhonizzle, on 10/05/2008, -0/+1http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/
Boxee Patch stick creator - carlosos, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1That would fall under the Media Center PC category but the mac mini still uses much more electricity that those other choices, doesn't have the required outputs for most people (no composite or component).
It can only take a few more years until we have a good solution. -
