HOW TO - Put DVDs on the iPhone - the super simple way
hackszine.com — HandBrake is a GPL'd multi-platform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper/converter - it's super easy to rip the DVDs you have and put them on the new iPhone - they look great and are about 1 GB each, here's how...
- 801 diggs
- digg it
- DarkEnder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22I don't have a mac to test this on, but wouldn't you get a smaller file size with no loss in quality if you lowered the resolution to something closer to the iPhone's resolution?
- bigsteve, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3And perhaps a slightly better battery life as resolution doesn't have to be changed on the fly?
- dasutin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7what part of multi-platform don't you understand, it works on Mac, PC, and Linux
- rossnyc, on 10/11/2007, -12/+1the iphone's resolution is much higher than any hdtv or b+w tv you have ever seen.
- rossnyc, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1you diggturds have NO sense of humor!
- rjam710, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Neither do you, apparently.
- rossnyc, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1you diggturds have NO sense of humor!
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Since it uses dedicated hardware to un-encode, I don't know performance would suffer that much - would make for an interesting test though. Put it in Airplane mode and try two different movies of two different resolutions, from a full charge.
- stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"un-encode"
Decode.
- stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"un-encode"
- vypergts, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3But I thought with an Apple product it was supposed to "just work" ?!?
- TheMidnight, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I did this for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (I own the DVD). Took about an hour to rip the video, and I took it to 500 MB instead of 1 GB, and it looks about perfect for the iPhone. It's 2:21:00 of video in half a gigabyte, so I think you can use lower quality for the iPhone and still come out ahead.
By the way, you have to check the box under the Videos tab for Movie sync, otherwise iTunes won't let you send any videos to the iPhone. Seems obvious, but I had to poke around for a bit to find it. - moofer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Run the finished file through iSquint, and it will res the video down to the native resolution on the phone. Movies should be a couple hundred MB when done.
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Or you could convert it to the native resolution in Handbrake, and save an hour (and some quality). Some people like higher resolution for viewing on computers or external displays, though.
- BigSax, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3I was really hoping this method would include something similar to making your own 200 gb Ipod Nano as featured at uncyclopedia.org
http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Ipod_Nano_200gb_Instructions - briankeith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3For some reason (and I just know it has to be something simple I'm doing wrong) I can not put videos besides video podcasts on my iphone from my XP machine. Works fine on my macbook though. Really annoying; I wish I understood the problem.
- markwilcox, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Yeah, Handbrake is pretty ***** on windows.
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The output video should be the same on both OSes.
- markwilcox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0It only works with unencrypted DVDs, though.
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The output video should be the same on both OSes.
- markwilcox, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Yeah, Handbrake is pretty ***** on windows.

- houndeyex, on 10/11/2007, -12/+4http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/images/*****.gif
- form3hide, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6dugg down because, well, maddox sucks.
- houndeyex, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Lies.
- listrophy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3If you don't want to see iPhone news... filter it: http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Greasemonkey_Script_to_Filter_Digg
- form3hide, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6dugg down because, well, maddox sucks.
- JimmyIkon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8With handbreak you can also set a target size. i've found that 400-500mb is bearable. I also use 2-pass encoding, h.264 (mpeg4 will not work), and a resolution of 320xX (X being whatever corresponds).
- titlesaysitall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Ugh dude, H.264 from Handbrake does not work unless they updated it recently.
- lolgamoff, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7handbrake is a fantastic program, it makes ripping dvds easier than ever
- tominabox1, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2i wish i could bury that comment spam 100 times....retard
- alai, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Handbrake is currently garbage on the Windows platform. I would highly recommend the Videora iPhone Converter instead. It is much simpler and strait forward.
http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPhone/- Anth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Really? I use it all the time to convert movies w/o a problem. The only thing it wont do is rip the DVD. Granted I had to go into the source code and fix a few things, but I posted the changes I made and the author is working on it.
- bsolidgold, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Where are all the REAL men out there? Use MEncoder... CLI all the way!
- lostcny, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1http://www.snagglep.us Mass Video Encoder!!!!! Does it all
- Anth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I downrez my movies to about 640x(height dependent on aspect ratio) and crop the black bars on the top and bottom out of the picture. It works great, along with two pass encoding I get the movie to about 350MB-500MB depending on the movie. Animated movies can be shrunk down more, but movies that are dark (matrix, dark city, crow, etc) usually need to be bumped up to 500MB so I can decipher the different levels of black.
- aurigus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This works great for the iPhone - is also works great for Windows Mobile phone or any portable video player. Yes you should be setting the resolution to the phone's resolution for best file size.
- jaycliche, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3isquint is easier. The converted I've done from avi's and ts folders as beautiful as anything is on that pretty little screen...as long as check the h.264 box. It also seems a bit faster on my older powerbook. Handbreak is more featured...but complicated for the new usedr
- Modano, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2iSquint is great but it won't rip DVDs, unfortunately. Its big brother VisualHub is awesome too. xGrid support for video encoding is SO COOL and dead easy, too.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I prefer MPEGStreamclip for video transcoding. The quality is good, pretty snappy, and it's completely free.
- stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1iSquint burned out one of the cpus in my Powermac G5. Handbrake is safer as it doesn't tax your CPU as much.
- Modano, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2iSquint is great but it won't rip DVDs, unfortunately. Its big brother VisualHub is awesome too. xGrid support for video encoding is SO COOL and dead easy, too.
- realwx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I wish that HandBrake worked so that I can put it on there... it just freezes up on me everytime.
- CroMag, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Might want to try ripping DVD's that aren't copy protected kiddo.
- vcleniuk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I think the 1GB files scale up a bit better to larger displays -- or if you have an AppleTV, or even XBox360 -- I think.
- GlenLeafJr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12HandBreak makes the TV worth having.
- DAVIDPOWERZ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5damn windows cant see the apple logo.
- stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I can't either, and I'm on a Macbook with Firefox. Odd, eh?
- dpowre, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Im using my mac now. thats better.
- DAVIDPOWERZ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5damn windows cant see the apple logo.
- jceagles81, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3can handbrake for mac undo the copy protection b/c i know the windows version requires another program to undo the protection like dvd 43 or any dvd?
i only ask b/c i 'd like to get my dvd collectio onto my ipod to take on long trips/flights- GlenLeafJr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3HandBrake on OSX will decrypt DVDs. It doesn't play so well with some of the copy protection schemes.
I have been using DVDFab HD Decrypter under BootCamp on anything pesky. So far it has worked on every DVD except one that I suspect was poorly mastered. Old school DVDDecrypter worked there but the resulting file had a skip where a few seconds of the movie replayed.
http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm - obeythefist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4There are a few movies it can't rip. Notably, the ones from Sony with their odd file arrangement scheme. But there are programs (Mac the Ripper) out there that will rip even the Sony discs, then just queue them up in handbrake and let it run overnight.
- GlenLeafJr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3HandBrake on OSX will decrypt DVDs. It doesn't play so well with some of the copy protection schemes.
- DAVIDPOWERZ, on 10/11/2007, -15/+2hey if someone rips anchorman, can they send me the file? i dont have the DVD of it. thanks.
- dpowre, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2jeez why is he getting dugg down? if i had anchorman id give it to him...and hey our names a similar :) are you my long-lost brother?
- Modano, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I don't have time to email a DVD- can I just tell you what happens?
- sporg, on 10/11/2007, -17/+7A better idea is to stop wasting your money on apple trash.
- GlenLeafJr, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Besides strippers, what should I waste it on?
- StatusQuoRules, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Beer!
- GlenLeafJr, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Besides strippers, what should I waste it on?
- combustion8, on 10/11/2007, -4/+31gb is waaaaay too big, I can get a great looking xvid movie on my ppc phone at just over 200mbs.
- cwoolf34, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Wow, this program is so cool! This must be a new program because I never heard of its before. How come nobody ever thought of doing something like thsi before?
- CroMag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Wow, so if you've never heard of it before, it must be new huh? It's been out for quite a while as have other programs that do the exact same thing.

- cwoolf34, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1lol, just ***** with yall.
- nightstrm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Worst handbrake tutorial ever.

- Fhwqhgads, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1*****.
I tried an flv to mp4 and when I went to test the converted file it said "file not found". Is that what you call "Doing it all"?
It also installed ***** google toolbar into firefox without my consent.
- Fhwqhgads, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1*****.
- DaedalusX, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4How about this?
- Get a real smartphone without a watered-down OS. S60, WM, Palm all good.
- Transfer your favorite xvid/divx using your mem card writer.
- Insert said card and play the movie using TCPMP/Coreplayer/S60 Divx Player/
- ...
- Profit??
It certainly beats having to recompress YOUR ENTIRE MOVIE LIBRAIRIE!- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4How can your profit when the phone you use is so poor?
- DaedalusX, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Oh yes the typical "YOU HATE TEH IPHONE BECAUSE YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT"
Guess again dickwad.
- DaedalusX, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Oh yes the typical "YOU HATE TEH IPHONE BECAUSE YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT"
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4How can your profit when the phone you use is so poor?
- scapermoya, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0for those of you who can handle complicated software, gordian knot is for you. very very very customizable, and there are great guides to walk you through it. I make 700 meg avi files from DVDs and they look AMAZING.
www.doom9.org - pixelbender, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4What is this "handbreak" stuff? You just gently set down the DVD, it isn't going to scratch the iPhone touchscreen! ;)
- Treoinmypocket, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1That's great but "there about 1GB each"? That's not good at all.
I have three 3-hour long movies on my Treo 650 and they only consume 192mb. FairUse does an excellent job of compression with no loss of sound or picture quality.
Playback is thru TCPMP. Its excellent. - neiltc13, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4Too bad iPhone has a stupid proprietary display resolution which is NOT widescreen as advertised and is some stupid in-between crap which forces both 4:3 and 16:9 movies to be cropped or black barred.
A real letdown, especially when you consider this $2000 device only has 8GB of storage too.- Kendalf, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Since when did cost $2000 to own the iPhone? Don't tell me you actually look at total cost over the 2 year period? Do you do that with everything you buy? I remember when it cost me $15000 to own a computer for 4 years that had 20 MB of storage.
- Fhwqhgads, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This makes it into an mp4, right? I assume this works with the iPod as well?
- CDoug03, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3anyone with a PSP has known about this for years now.
- orgazmo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Great! So you can keep bunch of movies on memory cards!
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This is really easy to do from cli with mencoder. Just use -ovc x264 -of rawvideo -o MOVIE.264 and then use MP4Box to put the video and audio into a .mp4 file.
- crazyboy1121, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Handbreak rocks the world!!!
- esquire360, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1try Media fork, the successor to hand break...
- nightstrm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It was, but the projects have merged back into HandBrake.
- Rijnzael, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0If I really want a DVD in a playable file, I use DVD Decrypter, DG Index, AVI Synth, and Virtual Dub. DVD Decrypter does just that, DG Index to index the VOBs, AVI Synth to proxy data to Virtual Dub, and Virtual Dub to create the AVI. It's complicated, but if you install DivX on your machine, you can get insane compression with great quality. Of course, this doesn't take the place for those who want the 'super simple and inferior compression' method.
- jediorange, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not sure if you know this, but h.264 provides smaller file sizes at the same file size as DiVX or Xvid. And handbrake provides a one step solution to be able to convert to h.264 So, yeah Open standard, easier conversion, I think I'd go with handbrake.
- nightstrm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Inferior? How is H264 inferior to a hacked together mpeg4 non-standard?
- jediorange, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Edit - Smaller file sizes with comparable quality
- PerennialTears, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Can someone find us a better tutorial please?
- miniboss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The problem I have with Handbrake is that it kills audio volume. With shows I bought off iTunes my TV volume is at 20 but when its a Handbrake ripped DVD then I need to put it at 50. It's really annoying that it's been a common problem for years but Handbrake has yet to address it.
Anyone have a solution? - HarbingerZero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Use the iPod preset and enable the 2-pass option.
Now you have a video file you can stream to your Xbox 360 with Connect360, on your iPod, and streamed via wi-fi to your iPhone using iExpress on your Mac or PC.
Compressing the movie down the way they've suggested is only going to waste time and space as the quality of that media gets limited by the resolution. Keep it looking good the first time so you're not duplicating effort later.
Who wants a ton of "Phone-Only" files taking up space? - dugem1, on 01/26/2008, -1/+1That's great find
