- timusca, on 10/10/2007, -10/+150Since when are "so many people breaking their iPhone screens"? Plastic scratches too much, glass breaks to easily... are you people waiting for transparent titanium?!
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -3/+113Yes, because that would be kickass.
- gn0stik, on 10/10/2007, -10/+86So how do I fix Vistas Aero Glass?
- woodcoxcb, on 10/10/2007, -6/+72good idea, but makes you realize why apple used GLASS... it really does make that screen look brilliant.
- thebrawl, on 10/10/2007, -11/+58HOW TO: Save hundreds of dollars and dozens of hours by not buying an iPhone
- jk_baller23, on 10/10/2007, -2/+41Expects you to have a dremel or rotary tool, but not scissors?
- notoneofus, on 10/10/2007, -5/+41You mean transparent aluminum?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+39See kevin you can fix it!
- louiedog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+33I don't think I want to deal with a company that charges $50 to fix a screen because of the storage capacity.
- internetass, on 10/10/2007, -11/+41Pretty nice guide if you dont feel like a double dose of raping from apple! this should come in handy
- Evoguy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27You know.. not to be blunt, but that plastic looks just awful. You can already see swirl scratches on there before he even puts it on the phone, give it 1 week and you probably won't be able to even see through it. That said... why the hell does apple charge so much to replace the glass?
And why is it $50 more to replace the glass on the 8GB model vs. the 4GB model... ?? - EpicSA, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24I won't disagree with that. The phone definitely looks better with glass. However, this plastic quick fix method will definitely get you by while you wait for prices on replacement parts to drop to something that actually makes sense.
- REsplin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24FTA:
Things you need:
2. Dremel or Rotary tool (I am not working this into the price of $5, hopefully you have one of these)
3. Scissors ($1.53)
Ya, because people have a Dremel, but not a pair of scissors - funkytaco, on 10/10/2007, -6/+26Impressive. Most people from the SomethingAwful forums would just wrap it in cellophane and call it a day.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -8/+25iPhone screens are well, a lot tougher than I thought. This screen did not break in his pocket, unless a car hit him where the phone was.
This video shows how tough this thing is. Concrete at neck height did not even crack the screen.

HAVE! - theirongiant, on 10/10/2007, -7/+22Perhaps you commented too prematurely, fanboydcs. He says that his touch sensor still works.
- Nerfdude, on 10/10/2007, -13/+28pretty nice guide if you feel like making your ridiculously expensive phone look like *****! this should come in ghetto
- Smiley09, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19I got the glass screen replaced with a pane of diamond. It doesn't scratch.
- turpenine, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15You could probably take it to a local glass cutter and get some good optical glass in there for $50 or so.
- spokesandspools, on 05/07/2008, -1/+13here's an idea, don't treat your 500-600 dollar phone like *****
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15"So Many"? How about "One"!
I keep my iPhone on the car seat next to me in the car, when out driving (to play music on). In panic stops or hard turns it flies onto the floor and into the doors. No scratches, much less breaking...
From the look of the screen his phone took quite an impact! - coheedcollapse, on 10/27/2007, -3/+14Blunt force by dropping is a lot less damaging than one single point. I could see someone breaking the screen if they had it in their pocket and accidentally hit it against the corner of a desk or something.
- Jaakob, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Ya, he purposely hit it with a hammer just so he could put the plastic on.
- Eslamicolt3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Good as new! Or, you know, not...
- Scarfy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9That's what the article said...
- l0rdn1k0n, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11...it's a feature!
- awhiteflame, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I cut all my paper with my dremel rotary.
Rawr. - thetaco82, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9If your reading comprehension was any good (you DID read the article, right?), you would have noticed the part where the poster said, "I will also add that this is by no means a final solution. I will just use it until the LCD + GLASS SCREEN comes down in price from people who sell replacement parts."
His calling it "GhettoPhone" was also a clue. - moocow1452, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13You don't, it's just... broken. forever.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10truth,i could'nt have said it better myself.
- johnny222, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11The point of the post was to show you how to fix a broken iPhone, not to point out that the screens can break in your pocket.
- UnixSkunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Hey, Timusca....Transparent Aluminum? I dont see why not.It might fix that problem.. You were probably just joking, but it HAS been created. Granted, Its transparent alumina, but close enough!
http://www.technovelgy.com/ct/Science-Fiction-News.asp?NewsNum=202 - jcaino, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8it's not even glass, jackass.
- rheaume, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Not if you want EVERYBODY to see your brilliant retort...
- wastern, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7thats why I keep the screen side to my leg when its in my pocket. If I run into something or fall down when drunk the screen will have a better chance at staying alive. Who cares of the back dents
- fishbert, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9'Reply' is a wonderful thing.
- loganhuddleston, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8yeah what the ***** is he doing in class?
- Jordanco, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12*****, I hate the digg community more and more every day. This guy did a sweet DIY for his iphone until the price comes down for a replacement screen, and everyone is ***** ***** on him. ***** off already.
- Terc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7He mentioned you could paint it in the article.
- efl14, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7let me remind you, that you are on digg.
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Um, what? He stuck a sheet of acrylic as a substitute for the glass, which is clearly not to anyone's specs, but will work until some entrepreneur with a talent for glass cutting (or a laser cutter) starts banging out cheap replacements. I don't see what this has to do with ***** on a warranty - accidental damage isn't covered, and I'm fairly certain that accidental damage of that magnitude would have voided what's left of the warranty.
- calbff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Do most of the "grown up" jobs pay $125/hour? You're wrong, he's got a valid comment - I'm a well-paid professional and I don't make near that.
- TenebrousX, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9The new one has a capacity of 4 ghettobytes
- shinew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6that's the most ugly iphone I've ever seen...
- xike, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8A couple extra hours would net you $250? I want to do whatever you do for a living.
- bitsyboffin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Defective by design. Im sorry, but if a mobile phone cannot survive being sat on, then it has no place on the market. A mobile phone, of the last 10 years anyway, is a pocket device, pockets are commonly found on the back of trousers, people commonly put things in these pockets, and accordingly people commonly sit on these things. If the phone cannot stand up to this, then it's junk IMHO.
- EpicSA, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Did you read the article as well? That is addressed. Also, you are an idiot.
- sublime, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Took my wifes broken iPhone to the Apple store 3 days ago and they gave us a new one for free. But only after we said we were going to buy a new one. She dropped it about 12 inches and it shattered the glass
- rickbauls, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7You make it sound like he is dropping concrete on it from neck height. I watched the video, and he never drops concrete on it from neck height.
