- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -10/+63No - Greenpeace should be made to live without everything they rail against.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -6/+54Looks like someone hacked the website..
http://www.greenpeace.org/apple/mact-write.html - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+43Gee, sure hope they didn't use a computer to make that website. Wouldn't want them to be hypocrites or anything.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36I don't know about that, PETA is the worst of the worst.
- kazem, on 10/12/2007, -6/+35I would tend to believe that a larger company than apple, that sells many more computers, would be a bigger polluter. Groups like Greenpeace give environmentalists a bad name.
- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+34Although let me clairify I don't always/usually aggree with the methods they use.
- scolainsola, on 10/12/2007, -11/+34Not shocking, but Greenpeace is as irrelevant as PETA, etc.
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27Of course they can't get enough. Look at all the free advertising they're getting. Did you know that Greenpeace has revenues of about a million dollars a day? All this anti-Apple stuff is attention whoring to build up Greenpeace's email and mailing address database to raise funds. Bravo to all those who debunked Greenpeace's earlier claims but in doing so, you fell right into their trap since. It is said that there is no such thing as bad publicity and we have proof of it now as Greenpeace has expanded their anti-Apple campaign.
"Revenue: $360 Million USD (2005)"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenpeace - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Seems to still be there in the coral cache at http://www.greenpeace.org.nyud.net:8080/apple/mact-write.html
However, I got a screenshot of the hacked page.
Look at the text in the web form:
http://www.smoothweb.net/greenpeace.png - gumby05, on 10/12/2007, -14/+29I know a guy that was in the Greenpeace store with his wife, and he heard these horrible noises playing over the speakers. He asked the girl working there what the noise was, and she said "That's the noise of sperm whales mating. Would you like to buy it on CD?" and he said "No. I'll take the one from when they club the baby seals."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I'd also like to point out that toxicity is completely realitive, if you take any company small OR big, they are environmentally unfriendly. If you drive a car you're releasing more toxin's than someone riding a bike. Using shifty wording and ***** statistics they can try and make anyone look bad.
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -23/+37I think its pretty smooth. Its not like they are advocating a bad thing. I hope Apple takes notice.
- Kickboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I am as liberal as George Orwell, but Greenpeace has gone out of control. They are a perfect example of what environmentalists shouldn't be doing.
Apple's products may be a problem. But personally attacking them isn't the solution. There are much worse companies out there that deserve greater attention than Apple. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I guess I should've taken a screenshot.. they already fixed it.
- cmallinson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I agree.
I have purchased a Macbook Pro, an Apple monitor, and an iPod recently, and I have never seen more efficient packaging in my life. The box for the Macbook Pro is a couple of inches larger than the machine itself.
More companies should be doing this. I'm so sick of buying things like memory cards that come in huge plastic cases, and why do aftermarket computer components like video cards and hard drives have to come in shoebox sized boxes with extra cardboard just to fill the empty spaces? I try to buy OEM stuff for this reason alone. but it makes me sick seeing all of the rows of boxes in stores that I know are 90% empty. Things like that waste more than material - they also waste space in trucks - meaning more traffic on the road, and more smog in the air.
I think it should be illegal to make a package larger than necessary. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -18/+30Greenpeace puts it's efforts into the wrong areas. They aren't pro-environment, they are anti-cooperation. This just shows it more. Instead of targeting logging company's they have found a new way to attack a big cooperation. Why not Microsoft? Microsoft writes software, not software, aka they attack the biggest PC distributor dell.
CASE and POINT: Anti-corporation ***** covering up their agenda as an environment concern. - deadcow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Greenpeace is lying.
http://www.roughlydrafted.com/RD/Home/ABC6DFDA-9DE9-4EA8-A269-65EAAB628676.html - commieDigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14From wikpukia:
"In 1986 [Greenpeace co-founder]Patrick Moore left Greenpeace after becoming disillusioned with Greenpeace's motives, criticizing the rise of environmental extremism. He believed Greenpeace became more concerned with anti-capitalism and anti-globalization rather than environmental issues. Writer Drake Bennett instead claims that Moore "left Greenpeace amid complaints about an autocratic leadership style and abrasive personality."
Salud comrades. - CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Apple did the work for them. They just ripped Apple's design and modified it. Now that's not very nice, is it?
- BlueBoiks, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Greenpeace isn't for the environment, they want four things:
1) Money
2) Power
3) Socialism
4) Communism
They use "save the environment" as a way to get people's attention to get on their bandwagon for their four goals. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with the environment. Even one of the founders of Greenpeace left when it was taken over by the socialist extremest. Greenpeace is the organization telling us to recycle paper, when recycling paper actually uses more energy and create toxic sludge, compared to cutting down trees and planting new ones. Greenpeace is the organization that tells us our landfills are filling up. They are not a good cause, nobody should give any money to these nuts. - lukes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Site hacked again, this time with another message:
"Yes pretend you're super mature with calling out apple on things. Don't you have anything better to do, like local recycling initiatives?" - greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Didn't they already apologize for saying that Apple computers are toxic, saying that the results of the test did not match up with the sensationalist claims they made beforehand? And yet they still have that page up? Weird. Though I'm all for the environment, I don't believe in sensationalism ESPECIALLY when it deals with what's supposed to be science and scientific method.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12hmm, but how ever shall they go after fishing ships without gas engines, how will they make their presence known on the internet without those evil, poison-filled computers, how will they run their biodesil cars without all the chemicals and high-energy processes needed to make the car in the first place? ohh how ever shall green peace make their fliers and posters and banners without the paper that comes from the trees they love to mention being cut down?
- pmr07, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11No doubt Greenpeace isn't savy enough to realize that arsenic (among others) is a vital material in the semiconductor world and many of Apple's products would not be possible without the use of those hazardous materials.
It can't be both ways. - walugi, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18I think Greenpeace is targetting Apple because it portrays itself as hip and trendy yet their business habits are bad for the environment. Ultimately if apple supported a 'greener' business plan it would benefit everyone.
They've always tried to portray themselves as above microsoft in that they want more than just profit. This usually seems to be the case...
Save the whales from illegal japanese fishing boats! - badken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I don't think you're getting buried for your comment. I think you're getting buried for your ridiculous nickname.
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I'm not sure what they think... If I buy a computer, I own it. And when it gets old, Its my responsibility to get it recycled correctly.. Its helpful when companies offer recycling programs, but its still my responsibility to take it there.
- djuniah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10wasnt a recent court battle won over website design? something about it being illegal to blatantly copy a sites design. This is in CLEAR violation of that.
like cartman says "goddamn hippies..." - Broelke4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Apple is not the worlds largest problem.
I hate it when groups waste all their time screaming at everyone else and grabbing for media attention over a small isolated and, in comparison to other issues, small problems. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually the hack I saw had far more angry commentary.. I guess it was done more than once.
- perre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What makes it a good site from a web designer's point of view? It was an immediately hackable site... someone already did the damage, and I agree the layout looks good because of the original designers they ripped off.
- thekak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8That Switch Ad on the homepage is ***** terrible... what douche bags.
- Pooavenger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6here is the link: http://www.greenpeace.org/apple/
***** blogs. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think they deserve some cease and desist letters. I don't know exactly for what, but they do.
- KingMoses, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Because it has been taken over by political and social activists whose agenda has more to do with anti-capitalism and anti-globalization than science or ecology.
It's hard to respect that kind of hidden-agenda *****. - michaelyurechko, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I'm sorry, but I hope apple sues them for this. I'd like some proof other than asian kids holding up old apple keyboards
- nox327, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There is something wrong with the webstie.
http://www.greenpeace.org/apple/ipush.html
Is it just me or are you guys getting a "popup" where you write to GP - Herolint, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Greenpeace are the biggest hypocrites in the world. They aren't about the environment, but rather use it as an excuse to gain money and power.
I definitely view the site as an attack. A lame one, but an attack none the less. - monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I bet Apple's lawyers are looking into this already.
- macslut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I can't seem to connect to:
http://www.greenpeace.org/ford
http://www.greenpeace.org/gm
http://www.greenpeace.org/dell
http://www.greenpeace.org/etc
Oh well, it looks like it's time for Apple to ship products in ink-free boxes again for a couple of years when we forget about it. - jger82, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How much market share does Apple have? 3%? How does targeting them while much, much bigger fish like Dell and HP are out there? It seems like they're attacking Apple because they'd rather have a slick marketing campaign over anything substantive.
- Herolint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ bitcloud
I'm all for keeping the environment clean. So, if an organization like Greenpeace wanted to come out and say, "We're for the environment" and ask me to donate to a computer recycling plan that they were offering in order to keep the planet clean, then I'd be a supporter of that. Many modern conveniences are simply not able to naturally degrade back into the environment, so an organization that "recycled" these things would be a good organization to donate to.
Greenpeace, on the other hand, just sits there stirring up crap and pointing their self-righteous finger at everybody while they continue to use their "poisonous" computers, cars, etc. Nobody needs that kind of hypocrisy.
If you want to change the world, you have to start with yourself. If you go around whining that everybody else should change, then you usually tend to piss people off and they'll do exactly the opposite of what you want for spite. - perre, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7THE HACK:
As mentioned 45mn ago in the comments, a hacker modified the site and the following message STILL appears on the "write steve jobs" page:
SUBJECT: get over yourselves
MESSAGE: you people make me really sick. instead of making little quips at apple and spoofing their website, why dont you go out and do something about it yourself. Apple is only one of HUNDREDS of companies that have been using the same procedures for decades. Go out and do something instead of singling out companies. - jburnette, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Greenpeace is just another activist group making a mountain out of a mole hill. Anything to scare all of us "common folk", as they see us, into believing that we are all going to hell in a hand basket and that we should open up our wallets for a hefty donation to a cause that may or may not even be anywhere near as serious as they claim. Why should I believe everything Greenpeace says over anyone else? Why should I send Steve Jobs an e-mail about how upset I am KNOWING that he isn't going to read it? This is such a sorry excuse for another money-grab.
- spider-man, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I suspect Greenpeace is blowing smoke here. However, what I do find amusing is the Apple loyalists being all up in arms about this. After all, what Greenpeace is (most likely) doing is putting together an ad campaign full of inaccuracies and half-truths and attempting to wrap it in humor. It's an exact imitation of the Apple switch ads. And we know that imitation is the highest form of flattery. Why the outrage? In a word, hypocrisy.
- xenixninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Seems like Greenpeace still has some really bad security. Maybe they should focus on that first.
I wonder if you still can access their smtp server. - bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I only eat natural food like nightshade and arsenic and toadstools.
- Epimetheus79, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9It is unfortunate that organizations known for their sometimes moronic & extremist activities tend to be the only ones that are able to affect change in the world, but at least in this case their underlying mission - to reduce the amount of toxins found in electronics - isn't a bad one.
- danieleran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5http://digg.com/apple/Greenpeace_Lies_About_Apple
Facts about what Greenpeace has said so far, and why they are targeting the least toxic 2% of PC's worldwide, while congratulating the most toxic PC corporations--which according to GPs own data, make false claims about their green policy! Nevermind the facts or the environment, Greenpeace just wants your donations. - Fengpost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4At least they are taking on someone who does not fight back!
