- beerbarron, on 09/24/2008, -11/+46Whilst its easy to compare the platform to the early days of MS and Apple, I think they need to realize Apple is now quite a major player in the computer industry. People dont buy phones for an OS, they buy them for features....
- bunnyandzombie, on 09/25/2008, -4/+32I love my iPhone but let's face it, it's far from perfect. Competition is a good thing.
- thespanielator, on 09/25/2008, -0/+28He's from the UK.
It's a perfectly cromulent word here. - TheAmazingBob, on 09/25/2008, -7/+33The G1 can't touch the iPhone. I think that while everyone is worrying about the iPhone, Android will slowly kill WindowsMobile in its sleep. Then the G2 will aim at the iPhone. Google isn't stupid. They know that attacking the iPhone is like trying to kill the iPod.
- Pliep, on 09/24/2008, -6/+29Well let's have a look at the Desktop. Did Linux kill Microsoft? Nope. Did Linux kill Apple? Nope. Will Linux or Open Source phones kill Apple? We'll see.
- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -5/+28This is comparison is overblown. First of all, Android is FREE. So Google won't have a Windows tax on every mobile device like Microsoft has with PCs. Google wants you to click through to the Google Search and that's the sole reason for Google getting into the phone market. But guess what? Google gets the exact same exposure on the iPhone, due to the integration of Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube. And most people are going to use Google for searching on the iPhone.
So to recap, Apple is not trying to get people to click back to Apple.com. Apple wants to sell you hardware and the apps that go with it. Google just wants your eyes, so they can jack up the price of AdSense dollars. Huge difference there. - iofthestorm, on 09/25/2008, -5/+26Technologically advanced? Polished maybe, but technologically advanced is far from Apple's forte. Every month new PC hardware comes out that smokes the old stuff and you can't just build your own Mac with the latest and greatest CPU or GPU.
- Laminarcissus, on 09/25/2008, -0/+19You forget that people come to Digg from all over. He may posting from 1820, in which case it would be standard English.
- kylesherman, on 09/25/2008, -1/+19You are an ignorant fool. Welcome to the English language.
- Laminarcissus, on 09/25/2008, -14/+32Major player?
They've consistently released the most technologically advanced consumer desktop operating systems and only managed to gain an 8% market share?
How does an Indy car driver justify consistently losing by 92% when everyone agrees he has the fastest car?
The answer is that they're great car designers, but terrible drivers. Their need to control everything has led to a low level of support among developers and a ridiculously small application base and, as though they think 8% is terrific, they're taking an even more restrictive approach on the iPhone.
Android won't kill the iPhone, but in 5 years everyone will be using Androids, and the iPhone will be reserved for people with enough disposable income and such limited needs that the style is more important than the substance. - MyMagma, on 09/25/2008, -0/+14True, but Google has done a fair share of killing in general.
- Technopundit, on 09/25/2008, -0/+12The only thing Linux has killed is Linux.
"House divided" ... that sort of thing. - rezerox, on 09/25/2008, -8/+20yeah your right. its better to buy a phone with a completely locked OS. might as well just work with the pre-made stuff built in right? it OBVIOUSLY has everything you could ever want. phone companies love to give you everything you want! they care about you!
you must use a mac. - jeebodon, on 09/25/2008, -0/+10I love how when something new comes out it's the "X Killer!" We saw it with the iPod killer, the new MMO games that were supposed World of Warcraft killers...don't believe the hype. It's going to take a lot to unseat Apple.
- Laminarcissus, on 09/25/2008, -4/+13"the most technologically advanced consumer desktop operating systems"
I was only referring to the operating systems. Their hardware is just an over-priced yawn. - Orsenfelt, on 09/25/2008, -9/+17Don't forget, Only the Mac brigade care what their ***** phone looks like.
- lovecss, on 09/25/2008, -0/+8Does the G1 have full Exchange support? If not then it won't even scratch Windows Mobile, let alone kill it.
- oblique63, on 09/25/2008, -1/+8indeed, that 'Dot-com boom' everyone talks about? ***** search-engine genocide right there...
and guess who led the pack... - nexah3, on 09/25/2008, -1/+8Who spoon fed you that propaganda?
A Windows box is just as safe as a Mac as long as you don't go to random Russian porn sites and install their toolbar.
I've never had a virus for the 6 years I've been running XP. It's called common sense; it's more powerful than any anti-virus software. - jwdav, on 09/24/2008, -3/+10The IBM PC was not designed as an "open standards" PC (whatever that meant in 1980) - the IBM PC was reverse engineered and IBM lost control of it. On the hardware side, it did use "off the shelf" components, but so did almost every other computer at the time - the same parts on customised circuit boards. In the early years, it was a single source OS platform as well plus, every OS has third party developers.
- ketha, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6Microsoft succeeded in a very different world, in a very different situation. It's part of Apple's DNA to be closed like this... and there are enough choices around for alternatives.... this myth that open source is far more efficient is actually hard to find evidence for.. most punters want something that works and is easy...
- Trax91, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6It embiggens the small soul!
- cipher64, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6I think you refute your own argument, by saying that google gets the same exposure on the iPhone. Google got into the phone business becuase it's the next pc and they want a share of that pie.
- Rudegar, on 09/25/2008, -0/+5if they own a mac
otherwise you can't - zenerdiode, on 09/25/2008, -1/+6Actually Apple with the IIe and the original Mac was a major player in the PC world back then, so I would say the comparison is apt.
- zboyet, on 09/25/2008, -1/+6A "wide-open ecosystem" would be one where you could buy the phone and use it on any carrier. Call me when that happens.
- TheMadCow, on 09/25/2008, -0/+5Flying pigs with frikkin lasers!
- ro11z, on 09/25/2008, -0/+5ever hear of a company called NOKIA ??? they are the biggest selling phones
- Orcmors, on 09/25/2008, -0/+5Well, World of Warcraft was touted as the Everquest killer. We all know what happened there. Anything can happen.
- joelhardi, on 09/25/2008, -0/+5Apple was *the* major player in the desktop computer industry with the Apple II (which had an open architecture), before they borked it up. If you weren't around then, then I forgive you, but the small market share Apple has now, making pretty PC-compatible laptops (mostly), is nothing like the leadership they had in the late '70s and early '80s.
- franksmith, on 09/25/2008, -9/+13WinMo 6.1 FTW. My Verizon xv6800 has....

Not bad for a $200 phone
Been there with features like this for years (almost 10)... and now all of the sudden Apple and Google think they have discovered combining a phone and PDA. Sorry guys but Palm and MS beat you to it and have been well ahead of you for sometime now. Keep playing catch up... it is good for all users.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php - madpuppy, on 09/25/2008, -0/+4good day to you, sir!!!
- ouzome, on 09/25/2008, -0/+4good point, but a sidenote of his major points.
- waydee, on 09/25/2008, -0/+4Business?
- modusop, on 09/25/2008, -0/+4Why are people pitting Google and Apple against each other - Eric Schmidt still sits on Apple's board. They have a bilateral opposition to Microsoft, and are attacking it from a cool-angle and a geek-angle. Android and iPhone are similar in power and concept, but target entirely different markets.
- Rudegar, on 09/25/2008, -1/+5iphone is an odd duck IMHO
got tons of ebooks on my computer
got a ebook reader on my ipod touch
the ebook reader can only get ebooks from url's.....
got an rss reader
finds a rss stream I want to add
because of lack of copy paste
one is required to type the rss add down on a
piece of paper and open the rss app and type it back in.... - GameEngineer, on 09/25/2008, -1/+5From T-Mobile:
"We were told by T-Mobile reps that an ExtUSB to 3.5mm adapter would be included with the phone to allow for the use of regular earbuds / headphones, but that adapter wouldn't make it into the first shipments due to production constraints."
Perhaps you should spend less time on sarcasm and more on actually knowing what the hell you are talking about. - inactive, on 09/25/2008, -4/+8Yer I laughed to @ the "Major Player", their is no limit to the delusions of a fanboy though.
- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -0/+4Umm.. no? I never jumped on the gadget bandwagon. I've never owned an mp3 player either. Want to crucify me?
- phrenzy, on 09/25/2008, -3/+6The world already has Microsoft and PCs. Why does the world need Apple to "become" Microsoft for Apple to be considered "successful"?
Apple is a trendsetter in the industry specifically because they operate with a different definition of success. Hey! Maybe BMW should create a 10k *****-box so they can be "successful" in the US Market, right? And god knows, BMW doesn't contribute anything to automotive technology or innovation now, right?
Phones are a CONSUMER ELECTRONICS device. Much like the iPod, people don't care if it is 'open' or can run 10,000 apps (with 9000 ***** ones) or 5000 apps (with 1000 ***** ones). They care if it can make calls easily and has some cool extra stuff it can do in addition. But, hey, maybe the market for people wanting mobile bit-torrent clients is HUGE!
Phones are nothing like desktop PCs. They are more like MP3 players. Guess who is dominating that market? - arcticblue, on 09/25/2008, -1/+4I've never actually had a phone that's had a normal headphone jack. I've been through 4 phones in the past year (personal and company phones) here in Japan and NONE of them have a regular headphone jack, but they all came with the headphone jack adapter. I don't see why everyone is bitching about it.
- DickyT83, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3God damn cromulent is a sexy word.
- pentiumii, on 09/25/2008, -3/+6y would he do that he right
i know it not cool to like winmo but it does have all them feature and so has palm for a long time hell i am not even a fan of winmo and still admit that basic truth is i phone is not a smart phone bottom line it just and ipod that makes phone calls thats it
that y hate it when people say its the software on the iphone that makes so great y it cant do ***** but play games and listen to music and not even the first to have a full feature browser nokia had that for a wile now basic truth is the phone in the smart phone market is behind and is playing catch up - MrChunks, on 09/25/2008, -1/+4@Orsenfelt,
Yawn.. yawn.. Not true. Not remotely true. If that was the case, why are Sony, Samsung, Nokia etc. etc. producing pink, blue, green etc. mobile phones? It's because ALMOST everyone cares what their ***** phone looks like. - inactive, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3Nope. What's that?
- mytCbumps, on 09/25/2008, -8/+11Don't forget, it's ugly as *****!
- NoseSplash, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3did you just reply to yourself?
- vallver, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3Well... maybe linux geeks don't care about looks but actually, most other people do.
I own an iPhone myself and all the people I know who also own one were attracted mostly by the looks. - timalmond, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3Windows isn't as open as Linux, but you do get treated very well as a developer. There are things like the express editions of all the MS tools which can be downloaded for free. They do a lot of reaching out to developers in a way that Apple just don't bother to.
The main problem with Linux is that it lacks polish, and that restricts the user base. You can't do things like DVD playback without jumping through a whole bunch of hoops that most people don't want to do. - BrokenCircle, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3Did you ***** equate owning a cellphone / mp3 player as a requirement for having a girlfriend?
