  • N01SE, on 04/15/2009, -0/+1A video being choppy could be due to many other things besides the player or encoding used, like your connection speed, your ISP's connection speed, other apps on your computer using bandwidth, etc.

    HTML 5 already supports a video tag. It can use any codec supported by the browser/OS, but lots of developers are asking for a standardized codec for interoperability.

    I tried deleting my cache and cookies.

  • j4200, on 04/15/2009, -1/+2Gmail has had a mobile interface probably the longest. I can't say for certain but defiantly longer than live has. This is the new one that sets the bar for all others. Again.
    Also live sucks. Slow, buggy, ugly, and covered in far more ad's then gmail. Need more reasons? Gmail is the leader of the pack. Look at all the 1gb inbox's and realize that was because of Google 5 years ago making the change.

They've watered down the meaning of the tag so much that people don't realize it's for testing purposes only. Other large companies have taken the same stride since google's appearance on the scene. Dare I bring up the Windows 7 beta?

    Youtube HD is my default on 3yr old pc and works flawless. It's not the flash that's eating performance. its the HD video flash is trying to play.

  • notyourbroom, on 04/15/2009, -5/+1Hey, iPhone/iPod users: If you've had problems with the new versions that just went live, this story might help you.

    When the new version of the online Google services came out, it broke all of the Google-related home screen shortcuts on my iPod. Normally, if a page has already been opened in Safari, hitting its home screen shortcut just shifts the browser's focus to that tab; after the updates, though, each time I hit the shortcut, it would open the page in a completely new tab. This chewed through memory incredibly fast and would often crash Safari because I would forget to manually close each abandoned gmail/gcal tab.

    I was able to fix the issue by deleting all of my old shortcuts and re-making them from scratch, so presumably the problem was caused by an address redirect- nothing that couldn't be fixed on my end. Still, I hope Google is more careful in the future not to break stuff like this.
