- inactive, on 09/18/2008, -3/+86is that 199 w/o ANY contract?
- protonone, on 09/18/2008, -10/+84Why does everyone insist on calling it a Google phone? I don't have a Microsoft computer, I have a computer running a Microsoft operating system.
- inactive, on 09/18/2008, -1/+57So you have a Windows box?
- Hawtshot, on 09/18/2008, -1/+54The iPhone definitely needs some competition from a platform with lots of enthusiastic developers.
Its frustrating that the iPhone is so close to being a perfect phone when its shortcomings are so trivial.
(Except for the battery life...thats not really a trivial problem but it seems common among smartphones) - frieddonuts, on 09/18/2008, -2/+39I think that the only way anyone will ever outdo the iPhone is with a multitouch, capacitative touchscreen. Pressure-based screens just have a cheap, plasticy feel to them, and often lack the responsiveness that the iPhone has. I would never own an iPhone, because I just don't care for Apple's closed ecosystem and have crappy AT & T coverage in my area. I'm waiting for a suitable alternative on another carrier that has the same amazing, bright, glass screen.
- tmacfan123, on 09/18/2008, -6/+39i think the only way google can surpass the iphone is by having everything the iphone already has and also giving an option on the contract and a lower price on it too. $30 a month + normal phone bills is too much for most people.
- friz, on 09/18/2008, -4/+34Stop making the phones attached to a carrier! I hate T-Mobile and AT&T doesn't have what I want/need for the price they advertise. Allow me to separate the two and I will gladly try the new Google phone!
- cerealjynx, on 09/18/2008, -1/+292.1 update helped the battery issue. Very noticeable on my 3G.
- GameEngineer, on 09/18/2008, -0/+25You don't have to wait for the first phones running Android to try it out for yourself.
Anyone can download the SDK from:
http://code.google.com/android/download.html
and run the Android Emulator right on your own PC:
http://code.google.com/android/reference/emulator. ...
Very cool. No need to go out and buy an expensive Mac just to do development. The SDK and Eclipse IDE are free to everyone and can run on anyone's home PC.
You can see a sample of the huge number of apps people have already written for Android:
http://code.google.com/android/adc_gallery/
And Android uses the industry standard Java for its apps and not Apple's damn Objective-C that almost no one has ever used outside of the niche Mac development community. - tanujdude91, on 09/18/2008, -0/+25Can't wait!!
- Tomholius, on 09/18/2008, -2/+25What are these stories you speak of? All I can find is political propaganda.
- GameEngineer, on 09/18/2008, -0/+22Google isn't making the phone. HTC is.
Google makes the open source OS, Android, that will run on this phone and many others:
http://code.google.com/android/ - reuscel, on 09/18/2008, -2/+22There's an ecosystem in the iPhone? Jesus, that thing is pretty advanced.
- 1xOnEx1, on 09/18/2008, -4/+24That is 199.99 w/ a 2 year contract with T-mobile. Although the data plan will be a lot cheaper with unlimited data usage(3g) with 400 text messages for 25 dollars i believe. or 35 dollars for unlimited data with unlimited texting.
The phone is called the HTC Dream. - santaliqueur, on 09/18/2008, -4/+23Anti-Palin? On DIGG? Surely you jest.
- swimmin00, on 09/18/2008, -2/+21Because without the Google label, people would just scoff at Android. It's all about branding branding branding...
- MacParrot, on 09/18/2008, -1/+19You most likely will be able to get an Android-based phone without a contract eventually...but you won't get it for $199
- Rudegar, on 09/18/2008, -1/+15because it dont require itunes?
- subigo, on 09/18/2008, -0/+14No. Two year contract.
- pintomp3, on 09/18/2008, -1/+14what are you smoking? HTC has a great reputation for making solid high tech toys.
- adarkmethod, on 09/18/2008, -1/+14umm, the Android platform is FOSS, so you shouldnt be waiting TOO long. T-mobile were the largest(cell carrier) contributer to the project, so they get the first device. I cant wait.
- binky79, on 09/18/2008, -5/+17It might be the coolest phone ever made, but i can't touch it until my 24 months of iPhone are up. Maybe it will be out of beta by then.
- asubigsaxy, on 09/18/2008, -1/+13T-Mobile will require a contract per WSJ article
- inactive, on 09/18/2008, -8/+19Surely google could make a decent phone i hope :)!
- chrillen, on 09/18/2008, -2/+13You americans always get bummed when it comes to cellphones.
- santaliqueur, on 09/18/2008, -1/+12Will you be receiving calls on your Google phone?
- NippleNutz, on 09/18/2008, -0/+11There is no one bigger. Tmobile is deutch-telecom the largest provider in the world.
- treedude, on 09/18/2008, -0/+10Android needs to be fully open source like it was going to be. I want to be able to load it on a current WM phone.
- cawpin, on 09/18/2008, -3/+13Contract or not, I need a CDMA Android phone.
- griffeycom, on 09/18/2008, -0/+9Maybe google's phone will be able to send/receive Multimedia messages!
- HiddenCanuck, on 09/18/2008, -3/+11Google doesn't make PHONES. They make open O/S's for phones.
- Molrajas, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4http://last-worlds-news.com/show.php?id=iPhone-j7g ...
- mrhaines, on 09/18/2008, -0/+8HTC = Audiovox
Just thought you should know... - miatafan, on 09/18/2008, -2/+10My last two phones have been HTCs running Windows Mobile and I have loved them.
- skidooer, on 09/18/2008, -2/+9The Google phone has the potential for much better applications since Apple seems to want to prevent any decent applications from being installed on the iPhone.
Because the phone is quickly becoming the new computing platform for most people, this will be significant. - blackinthmiddle, on 09/18/2008, -2/+9Hawfshot is right, however. The vast majority of the iPhone's problems seem to be self inflicted.
o No MMS (c'mon, why not?)
o No ability to capture video (again, they crippled themselves here)
o Flash that doesn't play in browsers (I know some like it this way but it would be nice to have a choice)
o Browser crashes (Obviously if they could have stopped this from happening by now, they would have)
o No laptop tethering (I can live without it)
o The browser forcing you to reload pages you've already downloaded when you navigate to another open page, then come back.
o Copy/Paste (not a deal breaker)
o Most importantly, the big brother "yes, this app has been approved by Apple/this one has not" aspect of things and the fact that they can kill applications on your phone whenever they feel like it.
Again, I love my iPhone and hope that Android spurs Apple to address these issues. - SkippyDoorknob, on 09/18/2008, -0/+7Will it be in beta for 3 years?
- 1xOnEx1, on 09/18/2008, -0/+7It is definitely going to be on sale without a contract. But it will be more than double the price of the phone with contract.
- collution, on 09/18/2008, -2/+9"HTC doesn't exactly have a good rep at making quality hardware"
From my past experiences, i've had more problems with their software than their hardware. That's where Android comes in. I wish the phone looked better but I'm just happy T-mobile is finally a phone to their lineup worth buying. To be honest before, I was a bit dissapointed. - peestandingup, on 09/18/2008, -4/+11It needs to be cheaper. $199 for this phone + a new 2 year contract isnt enough to compete with the iPhone with the same terms/price.
Lets get real. If the average consumer saw these two phones side by side, I guarantee 9 outta 10 would choose the iPhone. While the Dream is a nerds dream (pun) since the platform is all open, its not a mainstream looking device. It fact it looks kinda cheap, clunky & annoying. If it didnt have Android on it, it wouldnt get a second look.
*Waits to get called an iPhone fanboy even though I've never personally owned one & never will* - adamroach, on 09/18/2008, -0/+7I for one love T-Mobile. I got an iPhone and unlocked it just so I could stay with them without having to go to AT&T. Their prices are great and their customer service is by far the best of any. Up until now, my only complaint about them was their lack of good phones. Looks like that may change shortly.
- andrew606, on 09/18/2008, -0/+6how much is it without a new contract?
- HolyChimp, on 09/18/2008, -0/+6The multitouch is nice for certain things, like zooming and such, but the real beauty of the iPhone touch screen is that it's capacitative (stole the spelling from the parent comment) so you don't have to press down hard to get the phone to do things, you can just place your finger on the screen. That's what makes it so nice to use. Multitouch is just a bonus.
- TheR3dMenace, on 09/18/2008, -0/+6$199/2 yr contract
- SteaminTmann, on 09/18/2008, -3/+9The SMS app is absolute *****. It just seems unfinished, Lack of MMS, forwarding, sideways keyboard, etc.. and don't get me started on "ViewMyMessage.com"
- cyberwiz01, on 09/18/2008, -1/+7@enicholas
It's actually $30 with unlimited data and NO texts. The 200 texts costs an additional $5 per month. - dagr8tim, on 09/18/2008, -1/+7I could care less how the google phone compares to the iPhone. How does it compare to my blackberry, or to the new 9000 (bold) that should be dropping about anytime now.
Also, how will apps be handled? - EtherGnat, on 09/18/2008, -1/+7Compatibility with carriers other than AT&T, will run on multiple phones offering a high degree of choice, certain phones will offer features like replaceable batteries, keyboards, removable storage, etc that iPhone doesn't offer, applications that haven't been screened and taxed by Apple, etcc. Basically not everybody wants to be shoved into that tiny little box that Apple forces people in to.
