- Falldog, on 11/16/2008, -5/+110Voice search sucks. Now I just get weird looks whenever I search for horse pussy.
- laughtears, on 11/16/2008, -1/+15why is Android not on verizon, spint, etc?!? sigh, there's always GOOG-411
- zydeco, on 11/16/2008, -0/+8The Android code base uses the Nuance voice library for voice dialing (on the native side, not java). Why can't that be adapted for search?
- mattearle, on 11/16/2008, -0/+7So refreshing to see a company genuinely interested in fostering innovation instead of doing every sneaky, annoying thing they can to force you to use their products how they want you to.
- Jolly81, on 11/16/2008, -2/+7except it's ugly.
Hope Moto or Samsung will make their android versions look better than HTC - Tmobile - Jolly81, on 11/16/2008, -0/+4@EserVerx
It's not only about aesthetic value, it's also about materials used.
HTC's plastic tweets "cheap, cheap" when you squeeze it :) - Skysurfer27, on 11/16/2008, -0/+4It might have something to do with T-Mobile being on the Global System for Mobile communications while Verizon, Sprint, etc are on proprietary networks?
- Dylson, on 11/16/2008, -1/+5I laughed uncontrollably for 3 minutes strait. Thank you sir.
- inkswamp, on 11/16/2008, -0/+4*Golf clap*
- Soragon, on 11/16/2008, -2/+6Oh yeah. Really good.
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Burnette/?p=680 - Shakermaker, on 11/16/2008, -2/+6I think it would be more awkward for your Mom....
- Bara, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3Opie and Anthony fan?
- oneredeye, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3Also, Verizon is *extremely* particular about what hardware and software connects to it's network. Everything on Verizon is for sale, they charge extra just to unlock features that are already built into the phone (like GPS) thus making an Android device highly restricted on Verizon. But they have great coverage in North Dakota, while Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T get really ***** signal here.
- smoger, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3if the voice recognition in this app is comparable to the voice recognition in the G1's voice dial feature, you guys probably won't use it much.
- Soragon, on 11/16/2008, -2/+4Can someone please tell me if it is confirmed for the iPhone? I mean, read this:
http://9to5mac.com/apple-google-problems-iphone-ap ... - Rudegar, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2yeah that's a big show stopper ½ my sms's have reboot in them :O
- BrendanSheehan, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2I hope the voice recognition is good cause I didn't use the GMobile app before. What to me is even more important is that the search results are presented in a way that makes it easy to see them, right now they are "tiny".
- jamshid, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2FTA: Google expects that the new version of Google Mobile App will be available in the iTunes App Store later tonight or some time this weekend.
- robdiggity, on 11/16/2008, -1/+3"Proprietary?" Well, CDMA. Less total subscribers in the global sense, but certainly not domestically.
Oh, and here comes China.
But yes, no doubt like Apple they wanted their initial offering to address the largest market.
As for Verizon, aren't they rather big on Java/MIDP/etc? The walls around their garden are still pretty tall and strong. But they also seem to show interest in LIMO. - robdazomba, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2Oh wonderful! Now we can all rest easy knowing your manhood won't be threatened by this news.
- inkswamp, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2Yeah, the combination a mobile phone OS from a company with almost no track record in software running on hardware made by uninspired companies who have just been upstaged big-time by a newcomer is a truly magical combination, isn't it?
- theOster, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2Verizon and AT&T = old world, closed system business
Sprint and T-Mobile = new world, open system business
at least in terms of the OHA and sadly, V and A have better coverage - Theli, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2I don't think Android was really meant to be a competitor to the iPhone. Individual smartphone models running Android will obviously be competing with it, but I don't think Google has any interest in hurting the market share of Apple. As long as Apple accepts their software, and iPhone users prefer Google online services over Microsoft online services, they remain a source of revenue.
I'm also thinking that at the end of the day there won't be a "Voice Search App" for Android, the functionality will be integrated in the operating system by default. - elister, on 11/16/2008, -2/+4Why im glad its only available for the iPhone.

Naturally its a worst case scenario, but its something I have to call Qwest Communications and deal with, "Bill mother *****? Do you want me to pay it or not?", "Please hold while I transfer you to a syllable translator".
Thankfully I no longer have to deal with Qwest's voice menuing system anymore as they have forced me to drop DSL in favor for something that's actually faster than their recent 300 million investment in ADSL2. - peaceninja, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1yeah ive been very confused too, i downloaded the app as soon as i saw that video but i dont see the voice search option in the app anywhere
- mattfugitive, on 11/16/2008, -1/+2Who gives a horses ass?!
- sweintraub, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1TechCrunk says it will be available on Monday.
http://blogs.computerworld.com/google_speech_recog ... - staticfish, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1Well all this fuss; it's been three days and it's not even here yet.
- blueski, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Doubt they care. Just use mobile internet and click the ads. Similar situation to Chrome... if it drives browser competition, improves the platform for online apps, gets people spending more time online/using Google, they're happy even if Chrome doesn't work out long-term.
- blueski, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Android is an operating system. When phone manufacturers use it, they choose the processor. Nothing to do with Google.
If you mean the G1, yes the headline speed is lower than the iPhone, but it's dualcore and the iPhone is underclocked to preserve battery life. Most reviews find the G1 faster in use. - julieBi, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1I don't know what made them launch it first for iPhone, but I love it, this is a great example of sharing knowledge (and using apple as a QA team....). There are a lot of not-so-nice-things I can say about Google, but I wish more companies would share with others as they did this time.
Android will prevail, this is a spot for android rants and solutions.
http://www.fixya.com/support/p982210-google_androi ... - EserVerx, on 11/16/2008, -2/+2Oh yeah. Like one bug really debases the entire platform...
BTW if you read the article, the bug has already been tracked down by the community and has been fixed. - kevdawg, on 11/16/2008, -1/+1So, Google, what do you really want me to buy? A G1 or an iPhone?
- Falldog, on 11/16/2008, -1/+1Indeed
- plagiats, on 11/16/2008, -3/+2who are you to say that ? nostradamacus ?
- ShadowdStranger, on 11/16/2008, -2/+1Wow, I love how the article calls this "Groundbreaking"
I have been doing this on my regular windows mobile HTC touch for 6 months now with Microsoft live search mobile. All voice activated, too.
To quote the MS website:"
* Find local businesses and restaurants, and click to call them
* Get turn by turn driving directions
* Explore interactive maps with satellite imagery
* View current traffic information and find cheap gas1 stations
* See movie showtimes by theaters
* Web search from any phone with Internet access
* Search the full Web
* Find the latest news items
* Search images and photos
* Get instant answers for weather, stocks, maps, etc
* Get the gas prices for all gas stations in your area, and sort by lowest price.
" - rento, on 11/16/2008, -3/+2Because Google decided to give Android a cheap ass processor. End of story.
- EserVerx, on 11/16/2008, -4/+2Aesthetic value is a subjective thing, I happen to like the design.
- Mutiny32, on 11/16/2008, -5/+2You must be dense. Android had more developers than the iPhone ever will before it was even officially announced.
- inactive, on 11/16/2008, -13/+9Hacked iPhone = EPIC WIN.
Android will sadly never see the amount of developers the iPhone will/has. - hydehk, on 11/16/2008, -6/+1"search MILF"
"Palin?" - YouAreDead, on 11/16/2008, -17/+4***** iphone
android is much better still
