Google Talk is Jabber compliant, and so it already works with iChat. This "news" really isn't any big deal, as you've been able to use Google Talk in iChat since...well, at least since Google Talk has existed. - eric123abacus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+57there's going to be tons of integration with google in leopard, especially in the new ilife and .mac
- mvanhorn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35Uhhhh GTalk has worked in iChat since Tiger. Jabber = same network GChat uses
http://www.jabber.org.au/ichat - abdulla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Does this mean there'll be video/voice chat between Google Talk users via iChat?
- sruffelman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31We should be happy about this. The more Google and Apple work together, the better our software will work with our web apps.
- matthall28, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Google and Apple, two of my favourite companies, working together... Only good can come of this!
- StayPuft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Now if they could get AIM, gtalk etc to just run in one window .. like adium.
- MBarnwell, on 10/12/2007, -13/+27two of my favorite companies working cohesively together...what a technological kodak moment
i for one welcome our new "iGooglepod Pro" overloards - corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I'm sensing YouTube upload from iMovie.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I was editing, but Digg cut me off. Anyway, Google Talk uses the XMPP protocol, so it technically *is* Jabber. For VoIP it uses the Jingle protocol, and I don't know if iChat supports this or not, so it's possible that using Google Talk through iChat means you can't use voice. I don't know, I've never tried it. I doubt this changes anything though. The option is probably just for people who don't realize that Google Talk and Jabber are essentially the same thing.

- bonexaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@mazerstar,
You're absolutely right. I've been using Google Chat in iChat for months. You just have to set the server to talk to Google instead of the default Jabber server
Dugg down as ... you should have known this already. - robshoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'll finally have the perfect client when...
1) iChat gets support for MSN
2) Adium gets support for video and audio chatting. - pengu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9are you really suprised the Microsoft client is crap? have you seen the windows one? it has ADVERTS in it! Who needs pornsite spam when you can have ads delivered to you by MSN.
anywho. while this is good i guess, until they have a plugin model for other services, or officially support MSN/Yahoo/etc i'll stick to Adium.
as a bonus, Adium goes Honk! - HerrEisenheim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@emorphien
For video, I have yet to see a better IM client. Skype is working it's way up there, but it's not even close yet. I don't know of any other good IM client that lets 4 people do a video conference with high quality video streams encoded with H.264.
With Leapords new iChat features, iChat will be nothing short of completely unrivaled. The ability to stream video & presentation material along with live video is pretty impressive. Yeah, Adium has all sorts of options for customizing how things look and alert you, but all it really does it text messaging. - gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I'll be more impressed when it also supports ICQ, Yahoo, MSN as well. And don't bother to point me to chax ... I'm talking out-of-the-box from Apple working with the most popular protocols without having to hack up the app. Until then I'll be happy with Adium.
- grammarpolice, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Yay Horray!
- Nowheredan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wasn't one of the things that was to come of Google acquiring 5% of AOL a while back going to be IM interoperability? Where's that gone? Oh well, at least I've got Pidgin.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This isn't really news at all - iChat has been able to use jabber to connect to Google talk for forever.
Now - what WOULD be big news is if it supported the extra stuff only windows Google Talk users can do - like the little "conference call" button, or transferring files. That would be cool - and newsworthy. - gconeen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Can you file transfer?
- number5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i hope the voice chat will work in it now
- agraham208, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Um. Wow. I should be happy, but its kinda shaky. gTalk is able to be used through jabber, for one. And two, the screen capture for a product that comes out in the future, being hosted from photobucket with a compatible protocol just above it, leaves me rather shaky. But if it is true, Hooray! Cant wait. Apple FTW.
- TyrannousDotNet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i been using gchat with ichat since it came out....
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Both AIM and MSN clients are equally horrible.
Any client that requires a "patch" isn't a good client. - inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4please consider googletalk is NOTHING MORE THAN A JABBER SERVER. iChat has "Jabber" listed from the dropdown menu so any version of iChat can be "GoogleTalk", just because leopard has a dropdown menu with the server name automatically doesn't make GoogleTalk have any more value.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@sacr3dc0w:
If only...
Apple would preload Adium X... - HerrEisenheim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Want to merge Gmail with Mail.app? Enable POP. Done.
- jonshipman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Should... between two Gtalk iChat users.
- ckSubs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5""Why? ICQ*, Yahoo! and MSN are absolutely horrible. No one should use them. Period.""
""AIM isn't exactly the greatest, but it's the largest and so it's the de-fact standard that we all just have to live with.""
Speak for yourself. MSN is a FAR better client than AIM. Yes, it's ok to admit that. Bill Gates doesn't actually eat babies, whatever they tell you. And in my experience MSN is also by far the most used client. All of my friends use it, and none use AIM (to my knowledge). Maybe it's regional (Washington state, microsoft, etc), but whatever.
""are you really suprised the Microsoft client is crap? have you seen the windows one? it has ADVERTS in it! Who needs pornsite spam when you can have ads delivered to you by MSN.""
I am actually somewhat surprised, as the PC client is pretty good. The latest Windows Live Messenger + "A-Patch"(google it) = a great client, without ads, and the ability to remove all the other crap from your interfaces.
- sarahwynne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Adium is awesome...
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Really? That's kind of sad. Europe should collectively move to Jabber/GTalk. I nominate you to start the revolution.
- cwestpha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Now if they could murge Mail with Gmail seemlessly and implement an outlook like application with the Google suite of services.
- plkrtn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Jendrik.
You're stuck in 2001 there.
Most people in Europe used to use ICQ. But because of the uncontrollable spam comments and the amount of UINs that got stolen, nearly everyone in the EU except Germany has migrated to MSN/Windows Live Messenger. Hardly anyone uses ICQ anymore except the Germans.
Though lots are moving over to GTalk by the fact that it exists inside GMail. - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Does Google Talk?
- SPECOPS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@ gconeen
chaX only has a single window for the actual "chat" part - you still have separate windows for your buddy list(s). - mk2ja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@rasterbator
Have you seen the latest Get A Mac ad? One of the strong selling points of Macs is that they *don't* come preloaded with tons of random software. They already have iChat, which is much more integrated with the rest of the system than any 3rd party app. Apple provides tons of great software already, and when there *is* something cool it can add, I've seen it do that as well. Have you used Comic Life? Well, me neither, but that was my point.
http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/ and watch the one called "Stuffed"
EDIT - Also, yes, GTalk currently works in iChat. But perhaps the addition of a separate Account Type just for it means that you can now have more than one Jabber account per iChat? - dragazis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Adium's support voice and video is being started on as a Summer of Code project. If you want check it out in this blog entry http://www.adiumx.com/blog/2007/04/huzzah-2007-edition.php and there is more info that can be found about the functionality here http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/VoiceAndVideo . As far as GoogleTalk and iChat are concerned well as people stated before this has already been possible by entered the proper server information. It is definitely possible that iChat can support voice support with GoogleTalk if Google gives them the API, just like AIM did to allow for voice, video, file transfer, and direct connect support. I'm personally looking forward to when GoogleTalk users can talk via messaging or voip to AIM users.
- shuck, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1They are semi-integrated. Google talk integrates AIM buddies in the gmail interface.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Are you serious? Google has step-by-step instructions that tell you exactly how to do it, which take a grand total of MAYBE 2 minutes if you are a really slow reader and you suffer from severe ADD. It's a grand total of 13 steps, which include such hard to follow instructions as, "Open Apple Mail" and ,"Click 'OK.'"
Just send them this link: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13275
Or are your mom and girlfriend so retarded they'd need instructions to figure out what to do with it?
For real. - HerrEisenheim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It will probably happen eventually. iChat is also eventually supposed to be able to talk to Skype.
- coolgus, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1You assume wrong
- carl201167, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2is the convergence of naming convention - iGoogle, iPod, iMac etc. - a coincidence?
- apnAEA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Looking forward to a complete Google-OS X integration in Leopard... especially for Google Drive, or whatever you call it.
- lkv87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Until I can have multiple accounts (MSN being one of them) signed into iChat simultaneously it will always be a secondary application.
- captaink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Im assuming the 'support' for Google Talk in iChat 4.0 (Mac OS X Leopard) implies Voice and Video as well?
* if so we might see more of this integration earlier in iPhone. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is completely retarded - it already works with Google Talk you idiots.
Thanks for submitting a story about ***** all - Heilige, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Like others I think iChat really does need MSN messenger login ability
- kazuhima, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ichat needs msn functionality....
- TechCF, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Really cool! Now Microsoft, give up that crappy Mac Microsoft Windows Live client and give some docs to the iChat developers so they can add full 'MSN' functionality. M$'s own Windows Live client is really sucky both on functions and behavior. The only app that don't obey my "always on top" in video players
- ncaauwe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Okay, cool, who the hell uses Google Talk anyway? Just make MSN as easy as a drop-down menu. Basically, I want Adium, but with iChat's UI, and iChat's ability to actually send files to other iChat users, because Adium always fails at that horribly.
