Google Sees Surge in iPhone Traffic
nytimes.com — Of all the iPhone ’s features, none had reviewers gushing more than its Internet browser. It was the first cellphone browser that promised something resembling the experience of surfing the Internet on a PC. Santa helped deliver on that promise.
- 1206 diggs
- digg it
- PurpleSfinx, on 01/14/2008, -54/+38Just like a PC indeed. I know I never use Flash when using the Internet on my PC.
Oh wait a second...- PurpleSfinx, on 01/14/2008, -1/+21Ok I know it's on Adobe to support flash on devices, not just Apple, and I agree that it's still got a good browser for a mobile (Well, iPod touch does. I've never seen an iPhone, they're not out in Australia.), but whoever's fault it is, it still could really use Flash. And a clipboard, but that's coming. Still, I may get one after they come out here and reduce in price. I would expect them to upgrade it as often as the iPod anyway...
- Chirp08, on 01/14/2008, -1/+4the biggest issue I see right now is that when the majority of people think flash, they think online games. how would you remap keyboard and mouse controls dynamically to a touch interface? Since it's common web practice to have an HTML version of every flash page Adobe probably feels that it is unnecessary to include flash when it in fact doesn't prevent you from accessing any important problems, and it won't work for everything.
- PurpleSfinx, on 01/14/2008, -1/+4You wouldn't remap the keys, the games would have to be made especially for iPhonetouch. But people would do it, there are already heaps of non flash games out there, this just makes it easier. And I don't think Flash means games to everyone. I still think it's a useful feature.
- CressCrowbits, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6I wouldn't have thought that the majority of people think flash = online games. I think most people deal with flash day to day in flash heavy websites.
- Bootes, on 01/14/2008, -3/+17A flash heavy website is a poorly designed website.
- bbtweb, on 01/14/2008, -6/+2I've seen some very professional websites done very well in flash. do a google search for good flash websites.
- dshPls, on 01/14/2008, -2/+1Keep coding for IE 2.0 for windows 95 users, douchebag. The internet is moving exponentially, do your users want to be looking at basic html/css *****, or the webs best feature-rich content? I understand the United States figtree preservation foundation needs a new HTML site for its 80 year old viewers, but our generation is all about video integration, database driven animation and top-notch interactivity.
- dogstar0125, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1dshPls, what the hell are you talking about? Using Flash to build a website is a crutch for programmers who are too lame to write a decent web 2.0 app. Flash use should be limited to delivering specific multimedia content, not used to build the site.
- dshPls, on 01/14/2008, -1/+1Too lame? Is that your form of a descriptive retort?
Web 2.0 is a joke, it's a fad that we be dead in another 2 years and forgotten. Flash is a dangerous alternative that scares old-school html'ers, because it can do more than html in a neat little cross-platform package.
- joesmeat, on 01/14/2008, -2/+6If you need a decent mobile browser, try the N800.
It runs Opera, Flash 9 and has an 800x480 touchscreen display.
Oh! Never mind, they're not available here in Australia either.
(Got mine on eBay $350) - bbtweb, on 01/14/2008, -2/+9Having an iPhone, my only disappointment is its lack of flash support. Other than that, the phone has been incredible.
- Tyr7BE, on 01/14/2008, -5/+14To install flash on your iPhone, just copy and paste the following link:
...oh wait.- GliTCH82, on 01/14/2008, -1/+4No problem there, just download and save the...

- spazzcat, on 01/14/2008, -5/+18I have no problems not having a Flash player on my iPhone if it means less battery life. I am sure once they work out that issue there will be a flash player...
- PurpleSfinx, on 01/14/2008, -3/+4I didn't think battery life was a huge issue with it anyway... Plus it's going to run 3rd party apps soon anyway, what's the difference?
- bitspace, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2I tend to agree. I think flash in mobile Safari is inevitable. There's just way too much market opportunity to let that go.
- LeeSoong, on 01/14/2008, -0/+17Then in the Safari settings you'll need a Flash (On/Off) switch - save download times and battery life.
Flash Blocker (where You decide what flash content frames will run or not run)
is a MUST HAVE feature for the iPhone / Touch.
I need to see ShockWave / Flash content of some items,
but I do not need annoying Flash video Advertisements
yelling 'Lower your mortgage payments NOW !' in my headphones.- Firehed, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3There's already a plugin on/off toggle in iPhone Safari preferences.
And I would have it set to off if flash support comes except for the rare situations I need it (the free WiFi at Panera Bread has a flash-based login, and that's all that comes to mind).
- Firehed, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3There's already a plugin on/off toggle in iPhone Safari preferences.
- djJohnnyG, on 01/14/2008, -4/+0Yeah, I'm really glad Apple didn't include the option rather than putting the choice in my hands, they're soooo considerate.
- cleverboy, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6Most iPhone users don't miss Flash in the slightest. I'm more irritated when a website opts for Flash over Ajax and DHTML when they didn't need to. I think "Flash" is like Quicktime media. It needs to be isolated and treated as a huge resource hog separate from the normal browsing experience. If the iPhone NEVER got Flash, I can't bring myself to care. The ONLY thing that could do to remedy, is supporting Flash video clips. I'd like them to pop-up in a separate window though (like Quicktime). If Apple added Flash support, I'd bet most people would keep it turned OFF most of the time (if not all).
- drakken33, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1I don't care about Flash on the iPhone either. If Flash is added I'd like to see it turned off by default anyway to save battery life and bandwidth. They could then have an option to turn Flash on for a single item when the user wants to see it.
- PurpleSfinx, on 01/14/2008, -1/+21Ok I know it's on Adobe to support flash on devices, not just Apple, and I agree that it's still got a good browser for a mobile (Well, iPod touch does. - JasonCox, on 01/14/2008, -3/+46I don't have an iPhone so I cant check myself, but what's set as the default search engine? I'd have to assume it's Google- and that'd explain the surge.
- RedS0x, on 01/14/2008, -0/+30It is. Google also has an interface just for the iPhone/iPod touch.
- ploke, on 01/14/2008, -1/+10isn't google the default in all of them?
- migitalwarfare, on 01/14/2008, -3/+2all of what? cell phones? nah, my blackberry defaults to an AT&T cover page of sorts on the blackberry browser, and Opera Mini defaults to yahoo. you actually can't change the default search in the Opera Mini browser, that, to me, seems like a bad move.
- plaincorgi, on 01/14/2008, -0/+12It is either Google or Yahoo! You are prompted to pick which you would prefer the first time you open up safari.
- Awspire, on 01/14/2008, -2/+15Whoa, this should send shivers up Microsoft's spine. Personally, I feel the only reason msn.com is consistently ranked in the Alexa Top 10 is because Internet Explores default web page is set to msn.com. That translates into huge advertising revenues for Microsoft simply because of that default setting and the people who never change it. Microsoft better start getting out a popular mobile device to keep their msn ranked in the top 10.
- Murdats, on 01/14/2008, -3/+18they do, its called windows mobile.
it has only been around for over 10 years and is really quite popular.- Awspire, on 01/14/2008, -1/+3Ya know something, your right. I've even used it on occasion. Dont know how I didnt remember that. Oh wait, I've been on Digg too much, thats how.
- op12, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Though to the first point, at least in the US, the mobile browser's homepage is frequently the landing page of the cell carrier rather than one of Microsoft's choice.
- Murdats, on 01/14/2008, -3/+18they do, its called windows mobile.
- utahnkid, on 01/14/2008, -1/+16I'd have to assume you didn't read the article. Even if the iPhones search engine is Google, that doesn't explain why they would surpass other smart phone's traffic load on Google with only a 2% market share. The point is that even though more phones with internet capabilities are out there, more people actually use the internet on their iPhone.
- likwidfuzion, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2You can choose either Google or Yahoo in Safari settings.
- Dylson, on 01/14/2008, -1/+3Waffles.
- mystikraven, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3I ***** love waffles.
- boldt, on 01/14/2008, -16/+5A lot of people must have got them for Xmas. A lot of iPhone sites are getting swamped with traffic over the past week.
One of the leading iPhone wallpaper sites, http://www.iphone-wallpapers.net/ had to move to a new server because of all the xmas hits! - 4LeggedtriPod, on 01/14/2008, -10/+8I would have guessed that the iPhone made up more than 2% of the smartphone demographic.
- AceTracer, on 01/14/2008, -6/+14It's 6 flippin' months old, the other players have been doing this for the better part of a decade. The fact that it has 2% already is pretty impressive. Wait a couple years.
- shaitanx, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2In a couple of years, Apple will come up with a new toy..
- goudreauj, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1...wait till tomorrow

- WikiEasy, on 01/14/2008, -2/+45After playing with the iPod touch, I will never go back to that lame stylus crap again.
I have one of the worst smart phones on the planet, the O2 Atom. That crap is completely unusable in daylight (can't see the screen), everything is so small and requires precise taps by that dorky stylus, and the UI is so terrible. At least with the Palm OS by Treo, it's optimized for use by the keypad. - AntBing, on 01/14/2008, -2/+16Is that why my phone now hops to google.com/ig/i instead of the original google.com/ig?
- gbjxc, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5Better interface (size, layout-wise) for mobile than the regular one, I assume.
- ivandir, on 01/14/2008, -2/+2Yeah to bad the link on google.com/ig? don't work.
- trenchfever, on 01/14/2008, -21/+15>It was the first cellphone browser that promised something resembling the experience of surfing the Internet on a PC.
No it isn't- CannedCorn, on 01/14/2008, -17/+11Yes it is you snotty euro-trash nokia user.
- spazzcat, on 01/14/2008, -8/+29Its the first to deliver on the promise
- CressCrowbits, on 01/14/2008, -5/+7Apart from the slow speed, I had a happy time browsing the internet on my SonyEricsson P800 about 5 years ago.
- cardyology, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6P800 and P910i web browsing was *painfully* slow.
- SteveMax, on 01/14/2008, -2/+5I'm pretty sure that browsing the Net on a S60-based device is a better experience than browsing on the iPhone. They use the same rendering engine and a similar zooming concept; thay lack the touchscreen but make up for it with faster connections and a keyboard (full QWERTY on some models) for entering data.
- judgeFire, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5The Nokia browser, which is based on Apple's WebKit, renders things as well as Safari, including CSS and Javascript. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Browser_for_S60
It's a great browser, second only to the.. iPhone. Nokia's problems are in the UI, which is a pain to use, especially when compared to the direct interaction of Apple's touch tech. (Not to mention Nokia build quality...)
- skinfitz, on 01/14/2008, -6/+30Just a shame it's not 3G really.
- ampmob, on 01/14/2008, -32/+2iphone is lame. how do i send a text?
- skinfitz, on 01/14/2008, -0/+8http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/index.html#sm ...
- serpicolugnut, on 01/14/2008, -0/+19You tap on the SMS icon, select a contact or enter a number and type. Duh.
- ekrub, on 01/14/2008, -1/+9Yes 3G would be nice, but I don't miss it as much as I thought I would (from Sprint Treo 700p to iPhone). Most of my time at work or home, I have up to 10x the speed of my Treo (via wifi). Sure, I'll upgrade to a 3G iPhone, as long as the battery life is the same/better and it doesn't add weight/thickness to the phone. I loved my Treo 700p (always preferred Palm), but I could never go back to it now. The UI and wifi are REALLY killer. Add an SDK and 3G and...wow.
- bgramer1, on 01/14/2008, -1/+12"Just a shame it's not 3G really." ..... yet.
- skinfitz, on 01/14/2008, -4/+6Are all iPhones going to magically become 3G without having to buy a new one? I had no idea.
- Ireland, on 01/14/2008, -2/+2Easy to use requires "some" brain-cells.
- etandrib, on 01/14/2008, -3/+12When the 3G version comes out people will complain that it isn't 4G and have a coffee maker.
- TremorX, on 01/14/2008, -2/+3...and then claim that their $5 phone that came with their plan has had one forever!
- skinfitz, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3If the rest of the world is using 4G by that time, then damn straight.
- scoottie, on 01/14/2008, -1/+16G actually
- utahnkid, on 01/14/2008, -1/+3I currently carry two phones, an iPhone and a Treo 700p, the Treo is 3G while the iPhone (obviously) isn't. Guess which one loads web pages faster? Neither, they both finish loading at almost exactly the same time. The Treo can probably take data in faster, but the iPhone is so much better at organizing it they come out about even.
- skinfitz, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2In that case just think how fast the iPhone would be with 3G.
- ampmob, on 01/14/2008, -32/+2iphone is lame. how do i send a text?
- serpicolugnut, on 01/14/2008, -7/+54I've had the iPhone since the day it came out, and I haven't missed Flash at all. Sure, there are Flash sites that the iPhone can't view. But I stay away from sites built entirely in Flash anyway. And the upside of not having Flash is that you don't have to look (or waste time downloading) those stupid Flash banner ads that are all over the web.
If Apple/Adobe add Flash to the iPhone, I sure hope they give us a way to disable it, because I would definitely opt to keep it off.- ekrub, on 01/14/2008, -0/+8Agree, though the option for displaying Flash would be nice. I'd vote for rendered placeholders (tap to play Flash).
- LeeSoong, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5' rendered placeholders (tap to play Flash). ' - Excellent Idea !!!
save battery life, and download time - and see only the Flash files you want to see...
And Add-Blocker for the iPhone is also a top needed feature...
- LeeSoong, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5' rendered placeholders (tap to play Flash). ' - Excellent Idea !!!
- Firehed, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1They already do - look in the preferences for Safari on your iPhone. Notice the 'plugins' toggle? When Flash support comes, it will be quite simple to turn it off.
- Nick519, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1i feel the same way -- i thought i would miss flash, but really, i don't. flash is used for more things that are annoying now than useful, any way.
- ekrub, on 01/14/2008, -0/+8Agree, though the option for displaying Flash would be nice. I'd vote for rendered placeholders (tap to play Flash).
- howie, on 01/14/2008, -14/+17"It was the first cellphone browser that promised something resembling the experience of surfing the Internet on a PC."
Except for Opera and Nokia's browser of course.- Myztry, on 01/14/2008, -2/+7Except for the good stuff like streaming video where you've got to get off the slow American networks and head into 3G territory.
- Angostura, on 01/14/2008, -0/+10If only it had some kind of WiFi capability....
- neodorian, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3That's funny. I have been watching streaming video on my mobile devices for years now. EVDO is plenty fast.
- Myztry, on 01/14/2008, -2/+7Except for the good stuff like streaming video where you've got to get off the slow American networks and head into 3G territory.
- doctordbx, on 01/14/2008, -15/+10Breaking News: New Product experiences surge in growth from 0 userbase.
- jun2san, on 01/14/2008, -4/+24To be honest.....I haven't opened up my laptop at home for almost 2 weeks now because of my iphone. The only time I open it is when i absolutely have to see a flash site.
- stinkstank, on 01/14/2008, -2/+2I concur. I honestly prefer the experience browsing on the phone more than a desktop for many things ... when I'm at the desktop, I miss the tap and zoom and touch scrolling. But it won't be long and those will be commonplace on desktop macs, too.
- directrix13, on 01/14/2008, -1/+11Seriously? You prefer looking at that teeny-tiny screen to a normal screen? You enjoy zooming in and out all the time and panning around just so you can get the just of most pages? Why? I can understand accepting reduced functionality (Flash) as Flash usually adds little to the browsing experience. But the preference of a less useful screen I do not understand.
- betobeto, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3It's not much about preference as it is about convenience. Not having to tote the laptop everywhere you go just to check your email and have a quick look at your RSS feeds and yes, whole pages if you feel like it, is what sets the deal for me.
- domness, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2I would have to agree with you actually. I mean I usually go on my computer most days, but seen as I can just view sites through wifi and save bookmarks on the move.. it just seems so simple to take the iPhone out of my pocket, press Safari and load it up! Alot quicker than turning on my PC, logging on, waiting for it all to load up etc which can take a while.
The PC will never be knocked off the top way to access the internet, but the iPhone is so much quicker when i'm busy doing things.
- suppah, on 01/14/2008, -4/+7my guess is that iphone comes with a data plan, while other mobiles don't. so all iphone users use internet while only who has a dataplan uses internet on other platforms.
- skinfitz, on 01/14/2008, -5/+3I'm guessing you don't live in Europe.
- suppah, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6you are right, i live in Italy...
- skinfitz, on 01/14/2008, -3/+2Italy is in Europe. Do you not have data plans in Italy or something?
- MrMoonlight, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1No iphone here in Italy.
And no serious data plan, only ***** & expensive semi-flat - domness, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2Haha, Italy is in Europe!!
- suppah, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1actually, while italy seems to be part of europe (both politically and geographically) it will never be part of it. unless we (italians) make a revolution and take down those idiots and incompetents that rule our country. if you look closely, you'll find that in no other country you have a "minister of justice" and the head of our legal system that has been accused (and proven guilty) of mafia related crimes.

- suppah, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6you are right, i live in Italy...
- domness, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1That's quite true actually. Well all the phones that I have had come with a certain MB download for use with the phone, but this never suffices for the amount that I'd actually like to use it. And the fact that my iPhone comes with the data plan, means I'm never afraid to use it or use it for a long length of time.

- Micktion, on 01/14/2008, -15/+10Can anyone explain in rational (non-fanboy speak) legitimate reasons why browsing the web on the IPhone is any better than browsing the web on a mobile device with the same size display? And if you can manage that how about explaining how browsing the web on the iphone with it's 480x320 display would be better than say browsing with a Toshiba G900 Windows Mobile 6.0 with a 800x480 display?
I think the most logical explanation I have for these stats is that the type of people who would frivolously waste money on an IPhone are also the same type who would more than likely waste more money showing everybody how they can browse the web on it.- Angostura, on 01/14/2008, -1/+26Well, I've got a Touch, not an iPhone, but I'll have a go. The main reasons are:
1. The double tap to zoom to element - see a block of text, double tap - it's width fills the screen
coupled with
2. Arbitrary zoom - use the two finger 'pinch' to zoom in and out on a region.
coupled with
3. The accelerometer portrait -> landcape thang.
coupled with
4. The way it handles drop-down menus and text boxes - select a pull down and you don't get a pulldown, you get a kind of overlay with the choices available on a flick-up flick-down rotor.
coupled with:
5. The very fast way you can flick about a page with your finger.
Overall it works, realy very well. I quite often use the Touch when downstairs, away from the computer if I want to look something up quick, or want to check the news headlines.
Hope that's not too fanboy-esque. FWIW I received it from my wife as an unexpected birthday present, but it is a lovely gizmo, particularly since it does not run Windows Mobile. - stinkstank, on 01/14/2008, -0/+9Micktion: I can't speak to the other devices you mention, but I used a Treo for a long time and have briefly used Win mobile devices. I think it all comes down to the interface and the touch gestures. You just have to use one for a while to see how it feels ... The fact that the the entire interface is designed for your fingers is very difficult to explain unless you sit with it and spend time on your favorite sites.
As an example, I GREATLY prefer browsing Digg on their iPhone site ... it makes scanning the articles a breeze, and the only thing I really miss is that at this point they have not enabled commenting, but again ... you just have to fell the difference. I have used other mobile devices since switching to the iPhone, and, without hyperbole, it is a vastly superior interface design and browsing experience.
That is probably not the technical explanation you are looking for, but I think that's the point ... it's not the tech that you think about when you are using it .... - misxn, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6Here's some more:
1) Entering data in put fields like, Name, Address, Dates. They are so easy because the iPhone uses it's own input screens for input that's suitable for mobile browsing (unless you're on a web 2.0 page like Digg). This means you don't have to put up with poorly designed web pages or pages that don't conform well to a mobile device's screen.
2) Adding and managing bookmarks. Also sharing a link via e-mail.
3) Web page rendering is near flawless, especially on financial institution websites.
4) Tabbed/Paged Browsing!!!
5) Google search bar. :-P - DPimp1262, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5There are multiple reasons why it is the best mobile browser but I think the number one reason for me is just the smoothness of it. Whenever you use any other browser on a mobile device, for example the lg voyager, the machine can't seem to scroll through the web pages smoothly. You jerk from each section like if you were looking at a set of pictures. VS the iphone is liquid smooth all the way. You can use it to slowly scroll through text, or to browse digg stories. For that reason on top of all the other reasons like how well it dynamically adjusts the text size/smoothing of the text is why I love browsing the web on my iphone.
- colincornaby, on 01/14/2008, -0/+4Because the mobile version of Explorer is really awful while the iPhone uses the same version of Safari that OS X does?
- neodorian, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Mostly the multitouch is the only big advantage over Opera. It has zooming and panning and flash and all that but the pinch thing is really neat. I'm looking forward to more features like that on more versatile touch-enabled devices.
- MxM111, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1I can summarize the reason in one word : interface.
- Angostura, on 01/14/2008, -1/+26Well, I've got a Touch, not an iPhone, but I'll have a go. The main reasons are:
- LeeSoong, on 01/14/2008, -9/+1iPhone / iPod Touch Safari is very bad - no plug-ins, does not recognize most media formats, crashes out the music playback while loading web pages, does not display digg pages correctly, no real Java, and no add-ons like ad-blocker, etc - like you have in FireFox.
I hope the FireFox team gets the iPhone SDK quick, so a useful browser can be created for the iPhone, not that Safari error filled software.
Still, iPhone & Touch are really fine products for a Version 1.0 product.
The original 1st generation iPod wasn't very good either, but the current iPod Classic is amazing.
Hopefully the next generation of iPhones and Touches will come with 32/64 GB of Flash, 1080p video output, video recording for the iPhone, two cameras in the iPhone (front&back) for Video Telephone calls, GPS and wireless song sharing, video movie itunes purchases, working cut & paste, and more software apps for both products...- Vician, on 01/14/2008, -0/+4Mozilla isn't going to get Firefox running on mobile devices any time soon. One day, you might get Gecko on a phone; however, when you do, you should realize it won't be any different than Safari. You won't be getting addons, you won't be getting "real" Java, and just plain outright won't be getting Firefox on a phone. It'll be something completely different if it ever does happen.
- HOTM, on 01/14/2008, -0/+11080p video out? 32/64GB flash?
How expensive do you want this thing to be?
- aftershave, on 01/14/2008, -2/+17Being able to google something on the spot like you would from a home computer is the greatest invention in the past 10 years, if not in all of human history. Now I can check the price and reviews of products right there in the store instead of writing down ISBN or product SKU numbers and then catching up on them later.
Mobile web sucks. Being able to browse the real internet is where it's at. iPhone does that.
Google's minimalist design begins to show its utility once you've used it with the iPhone at a 340x480 resolution. And I don't mean google.com/m site, but the actual google search page.- Firehed, on 01/14/2008, -1/+7There's a lot to be said to be able to comparison shop from the store. I was using it to get book reviews from Amazon while in a Borders.
- DreKor, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1I would have said that Google was the greatest invention in the past 10 years. But yeah, yours is good too.
- sid007i, on 01/14/2008, -12/+4I'm not buying the iPhone until 3G comes out. Any word on the google phone?
- VenTatsu, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2There is no Google Phone, only a collection of software phone makers can use to create an OS for phones. Just like there is not Microsoft Phone but there is a Microsoft OS for phones.
- domness, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1The Google Android is just a suite of programs and software. Much more like an OS for the phone.
- spimby, on 01/14/2008, -12/+16Wow. I guess Opera Mini and Opera Mobile suddenly ceased to exist. This reporter couldn't stop kissing Apple's butt long enough to do some actual research. http://www.operamini.com/demo/
- etandrib, on 01/14/2008, -11/+6I think they did look at that and decided it wasn't even worth a mention. That is what they are discussing. The Safari mobile is years ahead of other mobile browser. Did you read the article?
- howie, on 01/14/2008, -1/+3Except even Nokia did these things ages before the iPhone was even announced.
This is poor journalist.- howie, on 01/14/2008, -1/+1(deleted)

- borneo66, on 01/14/2008, -7/+1For people who complained vehemently about the lack of a SDK:
"Mr. Gundotra said Web browsers as capable as the iPhone’s could also prove a boon for developers of mobile software, who have long struggled to adapt their programs to different types of phones. As it does on the PC, he said, the browser could provide a more homogeneous “layer” for programmers."
HEY! DEVELOPING WEB APPLS FOR THE BROWSER IS A GOOD IDEA! YOU GODDAMNED RETARDS DON'T KNOW IT ALL!- doctordbx, on 01/14/2008, -0/+0January 2007 called...
- colincornaby, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2Try writing a program that uses the camera in a web browser. Get back to me when you figure that out, mmkay?
- xsecretfiles, on 01/14/2008, -2/+16I've been an iphone user for a month now, and I gotta tell you. I don't longer get on my pc when I get home. I just browse the web on my iphone until I fall asleep.
It' s the greatest invention ever. I mean you can surf the web *through your wireless connection for faster browsing* while listening to your music collection with your earbuds, so you can't disturb anyone at the house, so if you feel tired, you can just put the phone aside and fall asleep.
You can do web surfing at a store as mentioned above quickly, it sure is 2g, but it's very fast IMO. again surfing the web on the go is very useful to me because I'm away from home ALL the time.
On the google thing, I can see why it has seen traffic increase, they have designed their page to be iphone compatible, the layout fits the screen and we get allt he widgets right there. I go there all the time, it's basically my homepage.- brandon099, on 01/14/2008, -1/+0"It' s the greatest invention ever. Well couldn't you do that with a laptop...I do. - addiktion, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1Funny I fell asleep with my ipod touch the other day listening to some music. It is a pretty sweet device. Overpriced in my opinion but since it's a hacked version I get more use out of this puppy. I'd like to try the VOIP software thats been released in the near future once they work out some of the bugs.

- thelastdyingday, on 01/14/2008, -7/+4when the iphone has more flash storage, 3G, and bluetooth....
that's when i'll buy one, otherwise i'll stick to my normal smartphone.- jonshipman, on 01/14/2008, -1/+6I'm pretty sure it has bluetooth...
And Digg needs a mobile page. Rendering with PIE is *****.- luchid, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2Portable Internet Explorer is *****. Don't blame Digg, it's pretty well coded.
- avihappy, on 01/14/2008, -2/+1"well coded"
No, it is pretty ***** on the iPhone/iTouch too. Hell, it's ***** on my Mac.

- sirmasterboy, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6Digg has a mobile page and it works excellent...
http://digg.com/iphone- dude111, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2I want to be able to see all the comments. Sometimes the comments will the least amount of diggs are the best ones.
Also, A2DP is a must on the iPhone.

- Genady, on 01/14/2008, -3/+5not to sound like I'm pre-dating myself, but wtf do you need with more than 8-16GB of Flash? Movies? On an iPhone? More songs than you could conceivably use?
8GB is plenty. 16 would be nice, but honestly, who can fill more than that with legal music?- BarriedaleNick, on 01/14/2008, -2/+3I can - about four times over..
- jonshipman, on 01/14/2008, -1/+6I'm pretty sure it has bluetooth...
- michlibrarian, on 01/14/2008, -4/+2Could it be that people who purchase iphones are in the demographic that would use minute devices for Internet browsing? That the vast majority of people use cell phones for voice communication and devices with much larger screens for work and play on the Internet. I find small appealing, but lots of business people are using cell phones for business and that involves talking to other people or text messaging. Many do not see it as a profitable use of time to be browsing the Internet. And of course, some of us are more visually-challenged. I prefer my 2.2 lb laptop for Internet browsing and email.
Just my 2 cents. - shaitanx, on 01/14/2008, -4/+2FTA:“Consumers are going to demand Internet browsers” as good as Apple’s, said Vic Gundotra, a Google vice president who oversees mobile products.
I c wot u did thar - Fubeman, on 01/14/2008, -2/+5Anyone who has had to browse (and I mean had to, not wanted to - because browsing on something like Windows Mobile is pure crap) can see the difference right away when comparing browsing the web on an iPhone and viewing it on any other mobile device or smart phone out there. The differences are quite substantial. You can move the window, you can double-click to zoom in right away, pull down menus work, everything looks like it should. Spend 5 minutes with an iPhone browsing the web and then spend 5 minutes on any other mobile browser and you will see the difference right away.
And as far as "I'll get one when it can do Flash, 3G, make my morning toast, etc. . . . . " all I got to say is that we have only seen version 1 of the iPhone. I seriously doubt that the iPhone is going to stay exactly the same 1 year from now. I would rather have a phone that works RIGHT the first time with what it has, then have a phone that has everything but the kitchen sink (a.k.a "Bloated Crap) and have it crash every other time. - gateway, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1I just saw a video podcast streaming site formatted for the iPhone, but man how do you stream over crappy edge with out getting like a blocky slide show.. I have used my friends iPhones a few times and the browser is great esp for non iPhone formatted sites. If you have a iPhone check out http://mvstreamer.mobi i think thats the streaming site, be warned my friends say EDGE (non 3g) is slow .. :( go figure, Apple why didn't u come out with 3g in the first place?
- damnyooneek, on 01/14/2008, -1/+1People complain about how slow it is without 3g but safari renders webpages much faster than other phones so it isn't that bad. I compared it with evdo phones like the voyager and treo 700w and it took the same amount of time to load web pages.
- gateway, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1edge does work for most things, but anything such as multimedia content, you have to pretty much wait a bit, and any video or audio that loads has to be at such a low bit rate watching it can be horrible at times.
- pyrates, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5Lets see whats wrong with this:
1. All iPhone users come with an unlimited data plan by default.
2. How many more other smart phones come with an unlimited data plan for $20 a month? Virtually none that I can see.
I guess the report leaves out this little tid bit of information because then it could skew the results and Apple doesn't like it when the results that they claim are shown to be skewed. - SuperSunny, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2I believe the reports aren't just iPhones, but rather iPod Touches as well (I own one).
It's incredibly useful. It doesn't matter if Nokia has released something that did this. It didn't catch on.
This is incredibly user-friendly and optimized for efficient work/fun. Anyone can use it. And everyone wants one. (Speaking in terms of Generic People) - shhteffen, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2This number is skewed because the iPhone reloads a web page every time you go back to the browser which drives me nuts.
- likwidfuzion, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1What happens is that the mobile OSX kills the MobileSafari process (or any other process for that matter) if it is idle to reallocate the resources to other processes that needs it. However, I do agree that the stats are skewed because of this.

- snowboardfoo, on 01/14/2008, -0/+0I'm sitting outside eating lunch in the sun tapping this comment out with one hand missing half the keys and the iPhone us correcting me perfectly using the keyboard horizontally or vertically, the experience is effortless after about a week or two of having it, and it browses like a computer. They actually did it right- now if only the camera didnt suck!
- masbestiaquetu, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1i just tried this. it's amazing. alot faster, and cooler looking. however, i clicked on youtube videos under my widgets, and it didn't work because it was in flash. go figure...
Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
