- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -8/+122I'd hate to be the guy that told Ballmer about this...
*ducks from flying chair* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+77I think this is enough proof that digg needs an improved submission feature that actually searches before people submits and alerts them to the duplication issues:

Digg had to add 2,3,4 and 5 onto the title of those stories because PEOPLE HAD SUBMITTED IT ALREADY. I've never seen it get this high before and no doubt there will be more of these submissions for the next couple of days. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -11/+68BALMER SMASH GOOGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- crazyman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+54YAY, Now Google can learn graphic designs!
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -9/+54AAPL stock went up since the announcement.
This is huge because it means apple and google will be allies instead of competitors. They will join forces to fight Microsoft and its tyranny.
I shall enjoy the days to come. - ridgelawrence, on 10/12/2007, -21/+52Apple and Google...
best of both worlds... - Aleks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Next phase, a merger.
Let's all welcome GOOPPLE !! - martin308, on 10/30/2007, -6/+29damn that would be good
- GodsHand, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27.Mac Beta will be free, thank God.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29Hasn't Sun had a hangover for the past few, well, years?
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Here's your first mission, Dr. Schmidt: full integration between Google Calendar and iCal, and Gmail and Mail. You have the power.
- Zminus10, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Apple opened its retail stores shortly after Millard Drexler, who was CEO of The Gap at the time, joined Apple's board. So there's a strong possibility that a partnership between Google and Apple will ensue. Mr. Schmidt is not just there to observe, you know.
- longboarder543, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Sometimes I get a sinking feeling that the world is run by about 7 people.

- eleven, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Okay that is the first comment that I have ever wished I could "thumbs-up" more than once. Apple, I know your reading this, if you haven't already thought of this, consider this your cue to clear your schedule* and make it happen!
* not your Leopard schedule. - trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23I for one welcome our google / apple overlords.
- gavroche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Yeah but at least their products are quality products
- s0ny, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18I dont know how much this will actually lead to Apple + Google collaborations, but its a damn good start! With Apple hardware / software and Googles web / software, plus both of their great consumer recognition they could own any market.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16News flash: Wealthy executives of a particular corporation sit on the boards of many other corporations, often those of competing brands. This allows them to, among other things, standardize prices across an industry, collaborate on industry-wide events (lawsuits, etc) and keep smaller competitors from gaining market-share.
- vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13It was announced 2 hours ago... and the stock is actually a bit up since then.
- fleetskeet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Gmail has POP3 access and I'm pretty sure you can sync iCal with Google Calendar.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Robbed form the depths of the comments /respect to *Aleks*
"Next phase, a merger.
Let's all welcome GOOPPLE !!" - colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You mean the boilerplate text at the bottom of every Apple press release, just as Steve Jobs noted as he did the demo?
- illegalchuck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Has anyone on this thread ever sat in a board meeting? Having the CEO of Google sitting on the board of Apple does not guarantee a strategic alliance. It is nothing of the sort. It is just giving advice for an equity percentage. I guarantee you that if Google comes to the conclusion that it needs to directly compete with Apple in its pursuit to own every piece of data on Earth, Eric Schmidt will politely step down and Google will release the hounds with no regrets.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Ballmer finally calms down after several broken *windows* and two twisted ankles, actually wait... I think I hear one final burst coming. "Don't buy iPod's!! Don't search with Google!!! And for bleepin' sake, don't call that psychiatrist, again!
Off he goes into the other room, mumbling to himself "developers, developers... developers". - GreenPlastik, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Right but generally speaking, you don't become a Board member to a company with whom you don't intend to pursue further and more complex business relations.
I think the people in this thread who realize that Google is seeking some allies in its ongoing battle with MS and Yahoo are clearly on point here.
Google competes with MS and MS is playing dirty with some of the search integration woes in XP and soon even more so in Vista.
Apple competes with MS naturally.
So Google + Apple vs. MS + MS Live.
Also note that Google and Ebay are a bunch friendlier now.
And notable rumors of MS and Yahoo getting closer must have Google looking around for a solid possee. Not to mention throwing down a large amount of money for the MySpace rights.
It's all connected, the internet, you see... something about a truck of tubes? or was it just a tube with a truck? Or wait.. no... there's a bridge and it goes to a tube... and a truck drives on it? - GopherGod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Or at least relate stories under one common digg.
For example, all those stories would be under one digg. Or some of the stories submitted would be marked, "other" reading.
Maybe some sort of flagging system that allows users to relate stories. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11This does not necessarily mean anything other than Schmidt is on Apple's board, as much as I'd like for it to be a business alliance.
- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Good point. Since Digg 3.0 launched, there has never been the page which shows you similar stories. Also, there is no longer a way to link to the same page when it may be updated. For example, if someone submits a story about www.apple.com, nobody else can submit that link (for a different story).
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9iCal to Google Calendar is a one-way street, AFAIK. And if I'm misinformed and it isn't, I imagine it involves some sort of workaround. I'd like to see built-in one-click synchronization between the two.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11Bummer bi0metric, now you won't be the only one... :(
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7could mean nothing having him there, but would love for apple to use this as an excuse to ditch .Mac and go with an Apple branded (free) Google online bundle of services.
- DarthGordolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Execute Order 66"
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And so can the NSA!
- chezsmithy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You are right! That would would be the best news ever!
- litchinsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So Google has their CEO in Apple, Apple Has their CEO in Disney... I'm not sure I know where I'm going with this but maybe we'll be able to easily search itunes for Disney content given away because of targeted adds. Nah that's crazy talk. Or is it....
Disney give stuff away. Yah I'm crazy. - flowctrl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In Leopard, your Spotlight database will be indexed by Google -- then you can search your hard drive from anywhere on the Internet!
- Anekdoten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No dummy, have not you been reading ? Goople!
- ThreeGs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How long before it is understood that in a post Boot Camp world MS and APL are not enemies? Not allies. But the success of MS does in no way hurts APL, while the success of APL (up to a point) benefits MS. Shoud APL ever appear to becoming a dominant hardware provider MS will have much to fear. However, that is as likely to happen as GOOPPLE (love that name).
- Glytch78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is this the second or third part of the trifecta? Did Intel count?
- BWhaler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not a big fan of Google since I think they are morally obtuse. "Do no evil" is a total joke since they keep big databases of our information for the Bush guys, or any government for that matter, to tap into. And don't forget they sold out every moral principle to the Chinese government.
But I guess on balance this is good for Apple. Two companies which working together can help push the Microsoft Dark Ages to an end. (And don't get me wrong, I want MS to stick around, but it is best for the health of the industry that they become one of many players. Competition is a good thing.)
There are only two things I know for sure on this:
1. Execs in Redmond are not happy tonight. I am sure there will be a lot of meetings in MS about this tomorrow.
2. Now we know why Jobs said at the last WWDC, "Microsoft basically just copies Apple and Google." I thought it was odd he didn't mention Sony. Or Oracle, SAP, etc. Now we know. - nickganga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that is the first thing that came to my mind. how cool. this is just what apple needs :)
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4.Mac want's to be as free as those chimpanzee's I saw in Edinburgh Zoo last week. It's so cruel! What's with that $99 anyway?
p.s. In Europe it's €99 = $126 *sigh*.. - gd007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2google + apple = topple microsoft
- hybrid8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3how long would it be beta?
- wolfdude96, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Just in case anyone cares...
what will happen with iChat and Google Talk - eleven, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4True - but this does a good job of possibly fostering some very solid goodwill between them. If nothing else it really shows that they have mutual respect for each other's products and services.
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Nothing but good can come of this.
