"That clear open courtyard space was mandated by the government in exchange for allowing the builders of the sky scrapper to build their building so high. When Apple got approval for building their store there it was because their structure was a clear glass cube that preserved the sight lines and openness of the public area that was granted to the public. Now by turning the structure into basically a giant billboard Apple has really abused the special grant they were bestowed when they were allowed to build a commercial structure on what was legally supposed to be an open public space." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37Apple should reinvent some 3g connectivity into the iphone.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40People shelled out $499 [$799 w/o a contract] for the Motorola Razr when it first came out. Aside from being a quad-band phone, the Razr is a piece of crap with some of the worst software I've ever used.
If the Razr can sell, the iPhone can sell. As long as it sells as well as the Razr, a year from now they will be subsidized down to $249 or below, at least in the states. - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -25/+55Apple is advertising a product they created at a store whose purpose is to sell Apple products?
NO. *****. WAY!
You'd think people never saw a billboard. - subliminalurge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31"Funny how they say they've reinvented the phone."
Yeah. I can't wait to see the iWheel, too. - EricJD, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Did they make that with the Rasterbator?
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Yeah, the guy below you did
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Yeah, the guy above you did
- transversed, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17To reinvent is to change something so much it appears to be entirely new. There hasn't been anything else like the iPhone. Let Apple have their fun. After all, this thing has been in development for years.
- raprazant, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Funny how they say they've reinvented the phone.
- Scott2, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21iPhone is a smartphone.
- morphie, on 10/12/2007, -12/+20No, indeed. Multitouch handheld, Core Animation, Visual Voicemail, a desktop-like photo manager, zoom-browsing and the proximity sensor have been around in other Smartphones for ages and are in no way new technologies.

Actually the iPhone uses WiFi in addition to Edge - so that means it's faster than any 3G device when on WiFi (much faster) but you actually have data access in way more places than most smartphones when you aren't near a WiFi.
I'll take slow data access over none, thanks. And when I need a faster network connection I'll find a WiFi zone. - morphie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12"Apples iPhone is going to be HUGE! :)"
If the iPhone isn't going to be.... at least the ad is. ;) - Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7and what happens when someone takes a picture of that glimpse?
- subliminalurge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"and on my WM5 based M600 i had did not store my texts like a conversation, it was just like any other normal SMS inbox."
That was my exact reason for saying that texting on Windows Mobile sucks. I guess I got spoiled by my Treo. It's nice to be able to look back and see what you had said 10 or 15 comments ago. - modusop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7People keep saying "iPhone isn't a smartphone" but what exactly defines "smart"?
I don't feel that the simply ability to install 3rd party apps makes a phone any more "smart" than something like the iPhone, even if it doesn't allow 3rd party apps. It's all about the software, and what I've seen on most smartphones thus far looks pretty comparable to what's pre-installed on the iPhone, let alone the UI advances. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"That doesn't mean I need flashy super warp animations when I open a new window." - GawtMilk
Ah, so it's the strawman you're going for then? I don't see how visual voicemail, or a "real" web browser, intuitive text chat, or a big touchscreen with gesture support can be considered all style and no substance. Jaded much? Every cell phone I've ever owned has sucked rocks. If Apple can offer user-friendly functionality and make it look good too, what's not to like? Yet there will be plenty of haters like you who will cry "it's too easy to use - it must suck!" Whatever.
And I believe you're talking about Vista when pointing out useless interface animations... - DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@ GawtMilk
See, by saying "Introducing iPhone" Apple is creating a sense of uniqueness, individuality, and personality that will be inherited by every iPhone they sell. The are going beyond the idea of AN iPhone vs. THE iPhone vs. MY iPhone. They want you to see your iPhone simply as iPhone; a proper noun. They're attempting to develop the sense of a personal relationship between consumer and the iPhone so it will appeal to people on a different level than any other phone out there. It's called marketing, and few people are as good at is as Apple. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17Actually Apple invented "EFH (Expensive Fashion Hardware)".
- milktea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Here's another truth: When the iPhone comes out, you'll actually be able to buy a PS3 (just like a few weeks after it came out.)
Sleep easy knowing no one will be fighting you in line for the thing :-) - mweels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5
How about the MotoQ or Samsung Blackjack? - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9So glad the voice of reason is here. Pull your head out yer ass and consider the notion that maybe Apple actually got it right or alternatively, give us a good alternative.
Also, brick? I havn't seen many thinner smartphones. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"If the Razr can sell, the iPhone can sell. As long as it sells as well as the Razr, a year from now they will be subsidized down to $249 or below,"
People keep bringing up the Razr as a justification for the iPhone's price and to predict price drops, but I'm not sure it's a valid comparison. First of all the Razr is almost the anti-iPhone. It sells not on features but on form factor. The audience is different, so I'm not sure you can draw any valid comparisons. Also the high price on the Razr was largely artificial. It was the hot new phone and Motorola could charge whatever it wanted. There is a lot more technology packed into the iPhone, and Apple doesn't exactly have a history of aggressive price cuts so I wouldn't expect a big price cut. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9From the pictures, the ad is semi-transparent.
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If I remember correctly, the first ipod was pretty expensive. Everyone said it was nice but they wouldn't buy it because of the price. I was one of those people. In fact I bought an Archos Jukebox at first. When it broke I got and ipod and by about a year later everyone also had an ipod. I think the iPhone will do okay and will slowly get better and go down in price as time goes on.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+71) No 3g network connectivity
It supports Edge which works is way more places including all major metro areas (not at all true of 3G)
When you need a faster network it supports WiFi which is much faster than 3G.
2) Can't load your own applications
What do you mean by "your own". You can buy applications from the ITMS. Apple will only allow a small number of developers, true, but will also probably develop apps for the phone. And if the included apps are good, that cuts down on a lot of what people buy apps for (to replace sucky mail clients for example)
3) Touch screens suck
Some touch screens suck. The UI becomes way more important with a touchscreen becuse you need to provide visual feedback as to operation.
4) Cingular services sucks
All cell phone companies suck, it's not like you'd be better off with anyone else. At least Cingular has good coverage.
5) High costs
I'm happy to pay once for something that actually works, phone wise.
"I think those are all pretty big issues! Repeat, the IPhone will not be big. It wll be a novelty product."
Sounds like someone is going to be using a new userID in about six months. - heptahedron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7They mention that Apple took the ad down (and yesterday the UK Apple store alluded to 8-core Mac Pros until that disappeared). I suspect that Apple has learned that glimpses of future products and ads are a huge marketing force multiplier. A glimpse of something is far more powerful than putting something up and leaving it up. It rewards potential customers who closely follow the company with a sense of being in on some secret and excites them to discuss it and spread the word.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You can install third party apps, from ITMS (Apple music store) - jobs said so right after launch. It's just that they carefully limit who can develop apps for the phone.
In any way you can possibly think about it, it is a smartphone.
modusop also make an excellent point about users probably being able to load Widgets on the device (custom dashboard widgets like in OS X). If you have access to the web, and the ability to make widgets, that replaces a huge number of custom applications. - M05H3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I think the Apple iPhone is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Thinking parallel, Nintendo also received a lot of criticism with their philosophy on gaming. And the iPhone is no different. It's all about usability through innovation. The iPhone's success will be good for the consumer. It'll drive other manufacturers to elevate their products even more.
- nugge7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I've always wondered, whose ***** hand is that?
- morphie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@GawtMilk:
"What's that got to do with a phone?"
A Multitouch display, the proximity sensor and the hardware accelleration making the fluid user interface (used in the playlist manager, the photo manager and the rest of all UI-parts of the phone) of the iPhone possible is hardware. The casing and design is hardware. But then again. It's the combination between hardware and software which leads to the magic.
Which other SmartPhone has good playlist management? Which other smartphone makes it possible to send textmessages as if you are in iChat. Which other smartphone makes it possible to interactively manipulate images without waiting for a minute or 2. Which other smartphone lets you view widescreen video's. Which other smartphone lets you browse the web with a -full-featured- web browser. Which other smartphone helps you visually find nearby (for example) restaurants and gives you the opportunity to call them directly.... Smartphones can do the same things, but not half as good as the iPhone (claims to) does them. Face it. iPhone isn't going to turn the phone industry (or perhaps they will), but this phone is something new, instead of throwing around with useless features. - mweels, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5
So if they sold you a computer that couldn't install 3rd party apps you would call that a smart computer? Computer would seem pretty dumb to me. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Should this thread be considered SPAM?
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11Al Gore took the initiative in inventing the internet by FUNDING the military research.
I don't get what's so funny. He did take the initiative by realising its potential. Without funding, it wouldn't have taken off. - heptahedron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@Pic0
When someone takes a picture, Apple gets free advertising and the picture taker gets street cred that makes them like Apple all the more. Its win-win. - mweels, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51) No 3g network connectivity
It supports Edge which works is way more places including all major metro areas (not at all true of 3G)
--------- So are you saying their target market is for people that do not live in major metro areas, how many farmers do you know that are going to spend this kind of money for this type of phone?
--------- All of the 3G networks can downgrade to other networks if it's not available. So not sure what your value proposition is there. 3G phones just dont stop working if the service is available (in non-metro areas).
--------- The fact is, power users of these types of technologies want fast download speeds for email, video, music, etc.
When you need a faster network it supports WiFi which is much faster than 3G.
--------- Where at my house and the coffee shop? No thanks. It should be Wi-Fi and 3G.
--------- You made my point, most of the apps out there for smart phones are free and are of great quality by the way. Furthermore, most the apps out there allow you to use your phone in a way the network providers might not have intended, usually for finanical gain. Having to buy software through apple to run on a phone I just paid $$ for does not make sense to me. It sounds like the record industry if you ask me. How would you like if that was the business model for music on the ipod, you wouldn't. No different here. Putting my "own" software on it is about choice and value, they are taking my choice and value away.
3) Touch screens suck
Some touch screens suck. The UI becomes way more important with a touchscreen becuse you need to provide visual feedback as to operation.
--- Give me one example where a touch screen has been massivily adopted as a user interface (except for ATM's where the interface is large).
4) Cingular services sucks
All cell phone companies suck, it's not like you'd be better off with anyone else. At least Cingular has good coverage.
--------- I acutally like Verizon, and I think a lot of people would agree.
5) High costs
I'm happy to pay once for something that actually works, phone wise.
--------- I couldn't agree more, thats why I wont buy it, it's already broke.
"I think those are all pretty big issues! Repeat, the IPhone will not be big. It wll be a novelty product."
Sounds like someone is going to be using a new userID in about six months.
--------- Would never do that. I am arguing facts that are currently true. You arguing about facts that you are assuming to be true before the phone comes out. I have no problem being wrong either, at least its based on facts and how i really feel about the product.
By the way, I own a number of apple products, the only reason I am being critical is because I enjoy their good products, and I dont think this is one of them. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You can install 3rd party apps, from the ITMS. Apple will only allow a small number of third party developers - but will probably also be producing some software themselves.
- randf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and what happens?
digg articles like this one full of standard digg quotes like "no pics or it didn't happen" followed by a flurry of flickr and photobucket links, i.e. more buzz...
then MSM writing emptyheaded articles on "the buzz"...i.e. even more buzz...
then talking head dorks at cable news catching up to the written MSM, with annoying articles about the MSM writing emptyheaded articles..."the buzz on the buzz".
then the launch, then the parade of digg stories about how so-and-so hated it, and all the fanboys raving...
and the circle of life is complete! - gekkoeye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"my WM5 based M600 i"
What? MY M600i is a Symbian phone. (With sucky UIQ3, but not as sucky as WM) - subliminalurge, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9@keefo
"how annoying would it be to text?!"
At worst, texting in the iPhone will be slightly less annoying than texting on a standard telephone keypad. I've texted with standard handsets, a Treo, and a Blackjack. In my experience, the full qwerty keyboard makes the experience much more pleasant, but I honestly don't find the tactile feedback to be all that helpful. The keys are still jammed close enough together that I have to have my eyes on the keyboard to avoid misspelling.
The Treo offers the best texting experience of anything I've tried. Partly because of the full qwerty keyboard (but the Blackjack has that, and texting on Windows Mobile sucks), but mainly because of the instant messaging like way that it keeps the whole conversation viewable for you in a window. Based on Jobs keynote demo, Apple definitely got this part right in their interface, as well.
I've found texting with a standard telephone keypad to be such a chore that I just refuse to do it. - RolltheStampede, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Look out Boston, its a giant bomb
- mweels, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3
Why do 3rd party apps, and well designed apps by Apple have to be mutually exclusive? - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"You can't install 3rd part apps on it."
Hence, smartphone.
I hated everything I ever installed on my Sony Ericsson.
Is it June, yet....? - mweels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to that video, the answer to the IPhone is in the bible. Case solved.
- BigAligata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anybody that thinks the iPhone is going to be huge is just buying into the hype that Steve Jobs himself is creating. He says he expects to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008. Since it's a Cingular exclusive (and there are only 70 million Cingular customers), that means that ONE IN EVERY SEVEN PEOPLE WILL HAVE AN IPHONE? I don't buy it. See the article:
http://www.intomobile.com/2007/03/12/can-apple-afford-t-keep-iphone-a-cingular-exclusive.html - pastasauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish apple would take a new picture of it. I'm sick of that guy's hand.
