- PhantomBantam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17The alcohol was not used as I thought it would be. His way seems safer, though.
- ricksite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11If you have a laptop that kinda runs and you need to get stuff off the hard drive, you can turn the laptop into a firewire drive by enabling target disk mode. Just connect the laptop to another Mac with a firewire cable and start the iBook with the 'T' key held down. The hard drive will mount on the other mac.

So easy even a caveman could do it!"
... damn, watching too many Geico commercials. - mohoyt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Aha, its immense!
I've got an iBook with this problem and I might just need to try this. - Fratz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't own a Mac, and I would never try this, but this is the most awesome computer repair walkthrough I have ever seen.
- adamfalkofske, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Mmm.. roasted Apples.
- geodescent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Will fire fix my Lithium Ion battery? j/k
- time2go, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You really have to read the entire log to appreciate this one.
- expiredmeatbag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4sony style
- ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Try using a soldering iron with a flat big flat tip on it... safer. I don't know if you can get cheapies, but I used to use a MetCal for big contacts.
- seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I just sent my i-book into the apple depot (~ $300) to replace the logic board for this same problem that this guy is fixing. The depot was really cool, they replaced every component in my laptop except for my hard drive, battery, and keyboard. They also gave me an extended 90 day warranty. I am sending it back now to have it's hard drive replaced for free. Apple's depot deal is a great option for someone who doesn't want to set their computer on fire, but I have to admit this is one sweet article.
- Khoji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Glue is an insulator. The problem is that the solder beads did not melt properly and are not making electrical contact between the contacts on the chip and the board. The solder needs to be re-melted to make the contacts. Using glue would make the problem terminal. (That was the polite version of this explanation...)
- PabloMac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"A quick inspection learned me that this one has the same infamous video-problem."
- MilesLombardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dude - FIREwire.
- SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hm... Im gonna try and get hold of a cheap, broken iBook G3. Think it's a good idea?
I always wanted a mac for surfing and stuff, but I'm a gamer and have limited funds so I've gone for PCs, but this could be a way for me to get my first mac =D - jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Woah after reading it all. HEs awesome!
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2KILL IT WITH FIRE!
- mandel15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WTF that is cool!!! I wonder if he could have used super glue instead... The problem is that the chip is not close enough, so why not using glue????(or the plastic piece like someone said before) It s always better than burning the house with the needed explanation to the firemen: I was lighting some candles on my mother board while watching star trek, went for a cuppa of tea and.....
- sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very fun article. I learned something, and I had fun. Congrats to the author.
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1neat!... i can make some hotdogs at the same time i wait for my ibook to start back up...
- ynggrsshppr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some people do the same thing to fix Xbox 360s. Supposedly it is only a temporary fix because the problem will come back. Sooner or later you'll have to throw it out.
- martoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1buckdog05, I tore my wife's apart too, originally thinking is was a loose connection. It wasn't. I put it all back together and had only three screws left over. Then, 4 months of using it it as a very expensive external hard drive to my desktop, I found this link. I bit the bullet, bought a micro torch, the kind you make brulee with, and torched the chip. But this time, the disassembly was easier since I only had to remove the back of the computer. By golly, it worked. Now I can have my desktop computer back and the wife can start using her newly refurbished iCook.
another forum discussing the fix

- dsthunder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I dont like ibooks either, i prefer ebooks on a pc not a mac. pc's have a bit more games and are great for servering...
dont hate me, i tried mac os on my merom x86x2 laptop, i didnt like it that much.
still dugg anyway because i did that to an xbox processor - jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the blog theme. But i would never do that
- Badfysh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I fixed my ibook video issues by simply sticking a plastic "foot" onto the video chip. Close the case and the chip is compressed against the motherboard, problem solved. I can't believe this story is getting dugg up because he lit ***** tea lights on his motherboard.
- buckdog05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DAMN IT!!!!! I tore mine completely apart, and there is no way I can get the thing back together!!
CRAP! - coyo7e, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This REALLY makes me want to light a motherboard on fire... When my boss comes in and is like WTF I'll tell him "I saw it on teh interweb - it fixes computers!"
- BassJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would have dugg this without reading the article as it involves fixing PC's and playing with fire - 2 of my favorite ways of passing time! Props to the guy for actually getting it working tho, I can imagine how great it must have felt to see a display on it after all that effort and it just goes to show what kinda stuff you can find online - information on how to fix your supposedly f**ked up laptop by re-soldering a chip - genius!
- EeViLWeEviL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0already too late ;P
- trebe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1omg I'm so glad I found this! Somehow I entirely didn't see this logic board replacement program and was scratching my head on what to do with this dead iBook. Luckily I bought mine really, really late so it's still covered by the logic board replacement program. Almost a shame though, would have been fun to try this :p
- afruff23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Exploding battery jokes in 3...2...1...
- JustinZz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That ball solder is a lot of trouble
Microsoft is having the same problem right now with the x360s - and just like the article states , many are have success repairing them using heatguns - numba1xclusive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'll just use my sony batteries instead.
- pap3rw8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1now that was awesome.
- dswashburn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0would it boot to taget disk mode - that would have been the easiest way to get the data off.
- choopie911, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1what does that have to do with fixing things with fire?
- gibler, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3the iBook, the iBook, the iBook is on fire.
the iBook, the iBook, the iBook is on fire.
the iBook, the iBook, the iBook is on fire.
