- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29Inaccurate for the following reasons:
1.) It's not a book, it's a PDF. The difference being something tangible.
2.) It's not the whole thing either. It's one chapter.
3.) While the name of the chapter is "A Technical History of Apple%u2019s Operating Systems", it leads the reader to believe the book is entitled as such, which is wrong.
4.) It's not -MY- book. It's Amit Singh's book.
That said, all I really wanted to complain about was point #1, but I thought I'd be a prick and complain about increasingly stupid things. - bobmagoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10inaccurate; blogspam; ok, this is lame;
decisions decisions... - reiggin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So where's the link to the flippin' PDF?
- gaius_baltar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Amit Singh is the man. HIs webpage probably has all the same stuff on it though.
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4agreed, (blog)spam, marked as such, but digg up the comment above that links right to the PDF.
- CreativeGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Headline says I get 140 page history book for free. PDF is 140 pages about Apple history. Yeah, the title is inaccurate because the book is over 1,600 pages. But cmon guys, is this really worth bitching about. Let it go already... you're complaining about getting 140 free pages because you don't like the way someone titled a post on a Web site. Jeez!
- d00d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Author of the linked blog entry in question here.
1) Neither I, nor any of my fellow bloggers, submitted the story, so I'm not sure how this would qualify as spam (blog or otherwise).
2) I forgot the link to the page. Mea culpa. I've fixed it.
3) No, it's not a tangible book. Yes, it's a version of a chapter of a much longer book, but it's not that chapter. It's different. However, it is a written literary work and at 140 pages, it can be treated as a book. It was also a little tongue in cheek. I'm sorry the title wasn't literal enough. I also didn't want to write a 100 word title so all the subtle nuance was left in the entry itself. - reiggin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That link wasn't there when I posted my original comment. Thanks to the blogspammer dude for making the needed addition of said link.
- mattp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First, the free PDF is about the history of the Mac OS, not just Mac OS X, if it makes any difference.
Yes, the submitter didnt write a very good summary either, but come on,
JUST DOWNLOAD THE PDF! ITS FREE!
Just because the headline and summary were not completely correct, doesnt mean you should lose out on obtaining this AMAZING resource! - adinb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3At the bottom of this page: http://osxbook.com/book/bonus/chapter1/
Also, the linked TFA is incorrect, this pdf is *not* the same as chapter one of Amit's book. - fingiecrookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My bad, sorry.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2except the article does say that it isnt the same. The downloadable one is unabridged and longer than the one in the book.
- Voldemint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That .PDF file is very interesting. Anyone who has an interest in Apple (and computers) should give it a read. I'm now thinking about getting the book... the only thing that's bothering me is the price tag of £35.99! Then again, it is 1680 pages long. Even so, the price does seem very high. Time to do a bit of shopping around I think.
- Survivor303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1duh.. the book is bigger than 140pages.. is not any kind different here that some publishers make and share something like 1/4 of the book for free everybody..
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://osxbook.com/book/bonus/misc/linux/
- wintermute1974, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People are complaining because the headline and description do not match what you actually get. This is a huge book and you are only getting one chapter of it.
If it was described as being a free chapter of a larger book, I doubt anyone would complain. Then again, with a less impressive headline, it probably would never have hit the front page either. - lostcny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK not really a book though you know like the kind you pick up and read, should have been titled........
No free ***** here, just a measly PDF that isn't linked to from this page!
I'm reporting it stupid - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apparently people like the PDF, or book, even if the submission to digg was *****.
I personally dugg down your comment because of the terrible content. - hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow some people on here are pretty thick if they can't figure out how to download the pdf at the bottom of the page.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1steve ballmer never was (and will never be) the chief software architect of microsoft, man. that's just rediculous.
- InklingBooks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The initial poster is the one who botched the story, an all too common occurence here and on Slashdot. Mac sites got the story right, explaining that it was a greatly expanded version of the first chapter. The book itself is about OS X internals by a very talented programmer. This is a history of Mac OSs, that's quite useful on its own. Well worth the download.
- jechasteen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think he means x86
- praseodym, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22.68 GHz i386? Sure you're not talking about i686 CPUs?
- unixjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got the book when it first came out. I read it cover to cover, and it was awesome. The book is packed full of so much cool stuff, it'll make your propeller spin.
- randyandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have this book. It's an extremely valuable resource.
- fingiecrookie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2How about next time you try to click the link that says "Download PDF"?
http://osxbook.com/book/bonus/chapter1/pdf/macosxinternals-singh-1.pdf - mawdawgie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0One chapter of a book for free in any format is nothing more than some marketing pin-heads idea to get you to buy a book for 64 dollars that is only worth 10.
Figures it would be about mac and or Apple. Nothing is ever free with those guys. I must say I was eager to get my hands on it and then let down when I clicked the link.
Too Bad... So Sad..... - tehgooch, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Well, at least you can find out if the book sucks or not.
- suprchunk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2It was already a story on here a few days ago: http://www.digg.com/apple/A_Technical_History_of_Apple_s_Operating_Systems
- nkarytia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Yet another lame.
- blurplevtx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1No digg for a single chapter, lame.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2if people are commentting on how bad it is, why did it get to the front page? Can this be supporting evidence of a Mac-bias on dig?
I personally dug down the story because of the innacurate tiltle. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2It's also not a book, it's only the first chapter too.
"...has published an unabridged version of the first chapter of that book as a free PDF for perusal. " - deepak123, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0testing comments
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4Once upon a time, Steve Ballmer was the CEO and chief software architect at Microsoft.
Until he was crushed by a falling 40'' screen iMac 2.68 GHz dual core i386 processor.
And so the revolution began...
