- drlha, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24Useful!
- astrosmash, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2140 screen shots and nary a single pin stripe to be seen. We're through the looking glass, here, people.
Also, for the first time in 24 years the menu bar doesn't have rounded corners. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I'm not a fan of the unified interface skin, but the new distinction between foreground and background windows is a much needed change. - astrosmash, on 10/11/2007, -8/+27The Dock has been transparent from day 1, so I don't understand where these Vista comparisons are coming from. Vista introduces a transparent taskbar and suddenly people accuse Apple of copying Microsoft? Or is it because Vista has transparent title bars and menus, just like the transparent title bars and menus of OS X 10.0?
The bottom line is that making a window transparent is hardly a new trick that would warrant any kind of discussion. - seanm, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22Here's a mirror of the Think Secret Leopard pics: http://rapidshare.com/files/38226921/Leopard_Pics_Thinksecret.zip.html
Hopefully someone can download that and re-host them. - Xenogis, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21My problem with it is it isn't pretty. The old menubar was. Transparency doesn't magically make things good looking, that is why I don't like the Vista aero theme.
- drakino, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20>Previewing Documents in Finder - Exists in Vista today for major office docs, PDF, etc. Also has plugin model so you can download additional viewers as >you need them. Just enable Preview Pane. Better yet, enabling them in Explorer also allows you to preview them as attachments in Outlook
Fair enough. Microsoft did this ahead of Apple to some extent, though Apple was on the same track already with the column view. When you dig down to an item, a final column shows a preview of some documents. Leopard is expanding this with coverflow, and previewing more items. Bring it back up to the level of Vista, with some different options.
>Stacks - Exists in Vista today. In any Explorer window, right click and select "Stack By" then choose a criteria. This, probably similar to Leopard, creates >a custom search which can be saved and is dynamically updated when new files are downloaded, etc.
Nope. "Stacks" in Vista are just the Search Folders Tiger already had in a slightly different implementation. Stacks in Leopard are only for the dock to basically create a collapsable folder (search or normal) on the dock along with the preview tech above. Two separate things. A Windows equivalent would be the ability to drop a folder in the quick launch area, and when clicking on it, it expands to show the contents in a window attached to the task bar.
>Adding Stacks to Dock is exactly the same as adding a folder in Vista to the quicklaunch - Click once and it opens the folder of pics, docs, music, app >shortcuts, etc. Not sure why this was heralded as a big feature, seems pretty ***** weak to me
Because adding it to quick launch simply opens it. Stacks don't "open" in the traditional sense, they stay bound to the button on the dock and don't spawn a new window.
>Time Machine = Vista's Volume Shadow Copy with an Apple UI.
Wrong. Volume Shadow Copy is mostly for system recovery after a bad driver or install. It only saves files once a day or on a major install event. Screw up a Word doc, and Volume Shadow Copy likely won't help to get it back. Time Machine is a backup solution to protect people from hardware failures or accidental deletes, and can help during system recovery as well. It can save files every hour (or more often with API calls), and allow one to roll back to an earlier version. The functionality is similar to the old GoBack program, but adds the requirement of a second drive to also add redundancy.
>The new Leopard Finder looks like they couldn't figure out what to do so they took their most popular app, iTunes, and just modified it to show files. This >is not an efficient way to manage files. I love having an address bar and the new Explorer in Vista which lets you view the folders at any point in your >entire path, etc.
The Address bar is pretty slick in Vista, however the functionality of jumping to any folder in the path has existed since OS X came out, with the path button in the Finder toolbar. There however isn't an address bar functionality in OS X to type out a full path, but such use isn't new to Vista. That came to Windows in 95.
>Translucent windows and drop shadow effect - This seems way to similar for comfort, lets not even get to the grass wallpaper!
This I'll agree with to some effect. Both sides do have tons of eye candy, though I'll say Vista still wins out in the "eye candy for eye candys sake" (ignoring beryl on Linux). Genie effects and such in OS X serve a purpose, they provide a visual way to see where the app is going instead of it just disappearing
>Maybe it's just me but is it possible they're running out of ideas and are now purely focusing on adding stupid effects that won't mean ***** after you've had >them for a few days/weeks/months (depends on user)??????
Maybe, but Leopard does have a fair amount of actual new stuff in it, and reiteration work on many other features to make them more refined, - parsap, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20That has been in OS X since the public beta seven years ago.
- obey43, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19those icons in the first pic seem very out of place

No commentary, though. Sorry.
*watches his server explode* - DonCarcharo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17Yeah overall everything looks quite nice -except for those hideous folders in the home directory. Initially I was hoping they were just for placement (as they look like placeholders) however if you watch the keynote, Steve makes a specific mention of those folder icons as being updated. If so, ouch. Those are some uuugly icons.
- ogore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I think the menu bar looks okay transparent but looks ugly when clicked because the drop down menus are still opaque. It just doesn't look right, I hope there's an option turn it off.
- ventro, on 10/11/2007, -10/+23It needs a bit of polish, UI wise. Also note that at least on those semi-transparent pop up windows, they blur the background under the window just like Vista.

- infobhan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12The translucent menu bar didn't look nearly as bad as I had thought from the shrunken images on Apple's website. It was actually pretty easy to read. The menus do need to match, though.
- wastern, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11They are easy to replace if you don't like them
- RadicalEdward, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12doesn't look like duggmirror got it. Atleast check before you post.
- Diggernaut, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10what they need to do is make the battery status and wifi status symbols in the menu bar also transparent and not have a white filling. right now it looks half-baked
- Xipher, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11At least there's the option to turn it off....or so I've heard from people with the latest version.
- Alexx3k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yeah browsing files with coverflow has to be the single most pointless feature. If you have folders with a few hundred files in (like many of us do) and you don't always name your files totally logically (like many of us again), then coverflow is prettymuch a backwards step.
Even in Itunes it's pretty useless, it's just nice to see the album artwork as your music plays, I doubt many people ever phsyically browsed their albums with it.... - cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6If you've ever used Compcomm's (formerly Beryl/Compiz's) Expo (formerly Wall) plugin, it's basically the exact same thing. In fact, Expo was pretty much a straight ripoff of Spaces :) You can zoom out and see all of your desktops in realtime, and drag windows between them. However, I've heard cool things about Spaces like the ability to mute the sounds of apps in other spaces.
- Rendezvous, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8What I don't understand is how this has not appeared in any of the popular torrent sites ONE WEEK AFTER it was released.
- FXPooky, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Ugh. The philosphy behing Leopard seems to have been pretty Vista-ish, AKA "Let's stick as many random effects in here as we can and change everything's look to impress everybody!"... I dunno about you guys, but I think they overdid it this time. The new theme is gray, for pete's sake. Monotonous gray. With Finder arrows that aren't centered vertically, and an transparent menu bar. I mean, who needs a transparent menu bar? You can't even see windows though it since it's at the top, which makes it useless, and ugly IMO.
And also, Coverflow? Seriously, who here will use it? It's kinda like flipping through your photos one by one instead of looking at a quilt and spotting the ones you want quickly: pretty useless, and just eye candy thrown in to... well.... I don't really know what they were thinking, probably something like "HEEHEE MORE COVERFLOW!!!". - sLydE, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6thank you so much.
- parsap, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6There is no way to turn it off (I am running a copy from WWDC). Maybe through the command line, though.
- AZooYorkMystery, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Sweet. A huge iTunes.
- Snipex, on 10/11/2007, -9/+14I think the transparent menu bar is pointless - and really copies Vista, unfortunately.
The fact that they changed from an always cool looking blue curved background bugs me, so maybe alot of people change their desktop background to a pic of them holding up a peace sign, but it seems Mac os X has set the blue curved background to be a default, in my opinion it should stay that way, and not follow a 'nature-ish' trend of Windows.
Also, the 3d dock thing, just in my personal taste, isnt that great either. (does it let you change the dock to 10.4 style?) - jmazzi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Faster mirror: http://r00tshell.com/static/Leopard-Pics/
- xjgeek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Am I the only one that finds ThinkSecret's site ridiculously slow?!! Every time(even before its dugg) I try to view one of their screenshot galleries I give up after waiting 30-45 seconds for the freakin image to load.
Call me spoiled. - DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5They look like they belong in NextStep or OS/9.
- jialuolu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Not a fan of the glowing blue dot instead of the black triangle to indicate open applications in the dock. Also, if you look at the Finder photo, the back/forward buttons are no longer centered vertically. Thought it looked better before
- mobilehavoc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I love the new dock and the how they auto-reflect themselves and nearby windows, seems like a nice effect but seems like something you'd get tired of or overlook after a few days of use. Then again, if you have nothing better to do than move your windows around it to see reflections maybe Leopard is for you.
- mikeazorin, on 10/11/2007, -12/+17STFU YOUR LINK IS DEAD
- geko567, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5yeah. I'm not too thrilled about the non-rounded corners of the menu bar especially when some of the windows throughout the OS are rounded...and then some are square. I hope they fix this before final release.
- Sarawanan, on 10/19/2007, -2/+6It's a beauty, only problem is the images are taking 1 minute to load each. Can't wait until October!
- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -9/+13TS is very inaccurate, but we always love the screenshots, they should stay up for a least a day.
- threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4it did show up on demonoid and was quickly yanked...it's on torrentreactor right now with no seeders.
- BayAreaKing, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10I can't see it!!!
http://cache.defamer.com/assets/resources/2007/03/idol-cryer.jpg - aphex, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9Leopard seems a little underwhelming :( I was expecting so much more than eyecandy features. I'll probably just keep 10.4.9 unless there are more features Apple hasn't let out of the bag yet.
- MakinBacon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Nice... a mirror that works - thanks!
Look at Picture 10:
I like the black, shiny look of the scroll button/scroll bar in CoverFlow...
They should use that universally instead of the old aqua look. - grogan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Coral Cache is now fast on the actual screenshots:
http://www.thinksecret.com.nyud.net:8080/archives/leopard9a466/ - serpicolugnut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Although OS X doesn't have an address bar, you can get the same funcitonality in any Finder window. Type Apple-Shift-G, and you will get an address sheep drop down. Typing in the location, and BOOM, you're there.
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'm excited about Leopard, but I definitely agree with you here. CoverFlow is useless for browsing directories, absolutely useless.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@drakino
Just a couple of corrections...Volume Shadow Copy does allow rolling back any file to a previous version almost instantly. You don't need to go into a Time Machine to do it, just right click on any file or folder and go to Properties, there'll be a tab for Previous Versions with a timestamp, etc. You were thinking of Window's System Restore feature which takes backups of system files when you change drivers, etc. so you can rollback if there's an issue. That's not the same as Volume Shadow Copy
Stacks on the dock seem useless to me, the amount of time it takes for the icons to appear after you click on a stack in Leopard's dock is more than it takes to open a folder that's in Quicklaunch. Just because it's not technically opening a folder doesn't mean *****, same functionality and it's slower to. If you want the accordian type of animation however, Leopard wins.
Never said the address bar didn't exist in prior versions of Windows but Vista's is a huge improvement. In your current path you can select any parent folder and it'll drop down all child folders of that folder. Makes navigating a joy and is probably one of the most overlooked features of Vista.
When Vista minimizes a window it animates towards where it is on the taskbar so not sure how this differs from the Genie effect in OSX except it's a different visual effect, same purpose.
All I was trying to say (and I expected to be dugg down by the Apple zealots) was that Tiger -> Leopard is NO DIFFERENT to XP -> Vista.... - Izacus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"Wrong. Yes it will. Check "previous versions" on Vista. -
