Plagued with problems. - pcflynn89, on 11/03/2009, -2/+3im pretty sure they never intended to use the cat names publicly. they wanted to just use the numbering scheme. remembering cat names is far too hard for most consumers. who is going to remember leopard vs jaguar vs panther? only dedicated enthusiasts. 10.6 is logically better than 10.5 and 10.4 to consumers.
unfortunately, the internal codename leaked at some point during os X development way back when, similar to vista being called longhorn for ages. the media took hold of it and ran.

Apple moved to a stand still. It lost most of its user base and windows quickly caught up in quality. Not only that but apple started allowing clones to be made and other issues began to happen. IMHO OS 8 and 9 are terrible sink holes that really never should of been made.
