And it's in ogg! - oskite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Because digg needs an arts section.
- OverlordMC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17This is a good example of why you should never write a comment while on acid
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Why wouldn't they be free, they are public domain
welcome to the motherload....ogg, mp3, wav, and even FLAC
http://www.archive.org/details/audio - montiff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10free stuff rules, thanks
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Wee! People other than me listen to classical music. You guys rock! In the metaphorical sense.
And yes, because this music was released in Europe, where the copyright lasts for the author's lifetime plus 70 years, it can be had free of charge. In the United States, works published before 1923 are public domain. - oskite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11and... blocked.
- scoot87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I understand this is free, but its from a podcast which have always been free.
- Kale, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's on iTunes, so it's filed under Apple.
- Calculusaurus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"There a ton on Wikipedia also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sound/list"
That's a long list, but many of those pieces are relatively uninteresting, cliche, and overplayed. But in case anyone is interested, here's what I consider the few gems in that list, which should definitely be worth the download.
Sibelius' Valse Triste (such an incredible piece. very eerie since it's supposed to depict the scene of a person's death but includes a few happy waltz sections)
Mendellson's Violin Concerto (the 3 "Violinkonzert e-moll" files)
Lizt's Piano Concerto no 1 (I'm not the biggest fan of Lizt concertos, but most people like this piece)
All the Schubert Impromptus (nice, simple, subtle beauty)
Holst- Mars (think Mario Bros 3 world 8 airship theme!)
All the Chopin pieces. - pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Ich habe iTunes!"
Wow, you do? How did you manage to get ahold of that? - l337phoenix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9what the *****?
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"excellent classical music"
Yessss! Someone who knows how to RockOut old school (Like Me). - MonkeyFarts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Awesome! I listen to this kind of music while I study. It really helps me concentrate.
Thanks! - dimmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5here is the xml feed that will work with all podcast clients, not just iTunes...
xml feed: http://rss.dw-world.de/xml/podcast_beethovenfest - mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Ulisses: You haven't truly heard Beethoven's symphonies until you've heard David Zinman at the podium. I'll grant you that Kleiber's recordings are magnificent, as are Klemperer's, Karajan's, and Furtwängler's, but Zinman's recordings are a not unwelcome breath of fresh air.
Listen to the sample of the first movement of Beethoven's 5th in this Zinman's recording:
http://www.amazon.com/Beethoven-Nine-Symphonies-Ludwig-van/dp/B00000IFP6/sr=8-1/qid=1168001211/ref=sr_1_1/103-9352077-5931020?ie=UTF8&s=music
Compared to the same work from Kleiber:
http://www.amazon.com/Beethoven-Symphonien-Kleiber-Philharmonic-Orchestra/dp/B000001GPX/sr=8-1/qid=1168001281/ref=sr_1_1/103-9352077-5931020?ie=UTF8&s=music
The samples for the 7th on the Zinman page are actually of the 9th symphony, so disregard those. Stick to comparing the first movement of the 5th (which everybody on digg should recognise, even the Slipknot fans). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Presumably the music itself is out of copyright, but not actual recordings.
Hence (good) free recordings being good. - Markpdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@Calculusaurus
The words you're looking for are "thank you"! Don't be such an arse about it, its something free and MUCH better quality than the itunes DRM crap! - Wolfboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, Mozart's sheet music is "free" -- no longer protected by copyright.
But if you take his sheet music and perform it yourself (maybe use your electric guitar in your garage), you own the copyright to your performance. Your performance of his music won't be free unless you choose to give it away.
Further, if someone makes a copy of your performance of Mozart's music without your permission, you can by law sue that person to try to punish them and recover damages, just like the RIAA. You own the copyright and except for limited "fair use" exemptions, the law says you control whether someone can copy it, play it, etc. The law says that you get to say how much you want to charge someone for it. You made it, it's yours.
The "specialness" of this Digg item is that good, copyrighted performances of classical music have been made available for free. - GLSmyth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very nice find, and some excellent recordings in there. I hope they add to this by including Beethoven's string quartets - the last ones are some of the most brilliant music he wrote.
Just remember that there are podcasts that reguarly play this music, for instance, http://eclecticmix.com/Show.asp?S=52 would be one example to check out. - kevinarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those of you talking about public domain, I think that, although the composition is, in fact, public domain, any performance would be protected. Therefore, you can legally play the piece, but if you mess with someone's performance, you can be liable.
- niotv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How about a free video podcast of Rachmaninoff?
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=74837876&s=143441&i=12267870
Not the most professional-quality audio or video, but it's free. - danceparty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2thanks for the links, especially the one to the rachmaninoff piece!
- ShaunO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try your favourite record store :)

prog-rock meets classical .. - soogy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.columbia.edu/cu/cuo/audio.html
Sure, not as good as Kleiber or the London Symphony Orchestra, but still Beethoven's 7th! - Ulisses, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Who would want to hear another rendition of the 7th besides the WPO/Kleiber?
- dougstewart, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3A word to the wise: The podcasts haven't been updated in nearly four months.
- kickcows, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3too bad beethoven's 7th symphony isn't on here.
still, its really nice to see youth orchestras getting the limelight like this. :) - Lane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2excellent, but where can i find the version that i heard on the beer commercial with the Christmas lights?
- Hidekatsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had been looking for something like this for a long time now... I'm glad I can recive classical music via rss now (having to find it on my own is a pain).
- Twango, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you're looking for electronic, Internet Archive also features netlabels
http://www.archive.org/details/netlabels
which includes
- melodic electronica (e.g. Observatory Online, Please Do Something )
- minimal house (e.g. Thinner, Textone )
- exotica/kitsch/eclectic (e.g. Comfort Stand)
- rock/mellower indie (e.g. Sundays In Spring, MASA Records, Sessions )
- retro bleep (e.g. 8 Bit Peoples)
- ambient/noise (e.g. Webbed Hand Records, Orgasmo Macabro, Zeromoon, Hazard Records )
And of course there are the netlabels themselves; here's one aggregator
http://www.rowolo.de/labels/ - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Beethoven and Mozart Recordings"
You make it sound like we have actual recordings of them playing. lawl - barrettg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it's mostly crap anyway don't worry about it !

- chota, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Why would you need a credit card? iTunes accepts paypal now.

- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"Classical music for free"
No *****? - ifoundgodot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Too bad Mozart is an overrated hack.
I personally don't find much for me in the whole classical period- give me a Baroque or Romantic composer any day.
Beethoven is good though, although generally overplayed. - mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1digg down (digg didn't show the first post for some reason)
- Spatulas, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Forgive my ignorance, but why is this in the tech section?
- AndrewMB, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I do know Mazart's music has become Public Domain....No ***** its free.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1WARNING: Mozart in high doses can result in severe health consequences.
Same for Beethoven and a couple of other so called componists of 'classical' music.
This 'easy listening' kind of 'music' makes me throw up.
A lot of music was written and played before the 'vienna classic', but sadly we only get mozart all over the place... - pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0So what do you want to hear, Mr. Snobby-pants?
(I'm sick of these guys too. Beethoven and Mozart made pretty noises; we get it already! It's just that to hear the way everyone carries on you'd think there was no decent music written in the past 200 years.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -52/+5Takes, minister, across usa read bills end wars amy!
