- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -8/+22I don't think sick CEO do much damage to the company they run. Steve Jobs is an exception because hes at the helm of a large corporation, yet he runs it like a medium sized business. Steve needs to disengage from some of the daily tasks of his middle managers so they can feel like they are in control, this way the machinery can work with Jobs in the future.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -0/+10I thought it meant "sick" as in "twisted". I'm a little disappointed.
- ThatsUnpossible, on 08/27/2008, -1/+10Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
- PrometheusBorn, on 08/27/2008, -0/+71) Apple is much more successful then they were when Steve Jobs left last time. Very different outcome likely.
2) Apple is not going to just throw away all the great things they've learned with Jobs at the helm.
3) They have momentum.
My only concern is what the knee-jerk wall street watchers will do, and more importantly, Steve's health. Whether you hate Apple or not, they've pushed the industry in new directions. And to those who will cite that Apple is a hack that just stole others ideas....... Look up the people who were sucessful with bringing an existing product to it's full capacity and are now legends. And I'm talking about the automobile, the sewing machine, and various other inventions that went no where until someone who could put all the pieces together to form a solid, sellable product. - perfectsilence, on 08/27/2008, -0/+7the comments on Freakonomics website are a million times more insightful than digg

Congratulations, Kevin! :)
Better luck next time, Jay. :( - mtekk, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4Wow, CoolStoryBro, did your mommy tell you to say that?

- LastVisibleDog, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Pretty funny dark humor (and I am a cancer survivor)
thedsack - cancer can be caused by a virus - look up oncovirus - don't forget HPV
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oncovirus - Spuy767, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Well, some cancers are caused by viruses.

- chubbybubba, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Let's be honest here, Jay is the real brains behind Digg. Kevin is kind of the muscle. Well, actually more the face of Digg. I'm pretty sure however that in one on one, hand to hand combat Jay would probably be able to take Kevin. Kevin got a little more weight than Jay but Jays got the sneaky accuracy. It is also well known that Kevin's reaction time is a little slow. Although in a weapon fight I would have to give it to Kevin, a little ninja training goes a long way.
- KSUdesigner, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2If you think Jobs hasn't already figured out who he'd like his successor to be then you're nuts. He's not going to disclose that information until he has to though because it will set off wild speculation. Jobs and Gates are very different people. Gates has run a successful empire for quite a long time, whereas Jobs's empire is just beginning to take off.
- shcon, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1NEWS FLASH!! APPLE CEO FINALLY SUCCUMBS TO HACKERS!
You know whats more serious than a "common bug?" A VIRUS@!!! Muahahaha!! Eat pop-ups and DIE Mac lover! - saisumimen, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Quick, sell the stock! I heard it on digg, so it MUST be true.
- thekronz, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Touché, sir.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1I wrote about this in late July from the context of someone who is self-employed. Like Apple, most self-employed people are intricately tied to the image of this business and if you look like you're going to die, your customers are going to get gunshy when it comes to signing contracts.
http://friuch.com/wordpress/let-steve-jobs-health- ... - merr, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1I think it has more to do with the fact that his return to Apple when they bought NeXT catalyzed Apple's growth with Mac OS X and the iMac. If the two companies had never joined forces and Steve had not returned, Apple would most certainly not be the big deal it is today.
When a company's success appears to hinge on one person, that person's presence means a whole lot more to consumers and investors. - ChstrCopperpot, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Charges thousands for ***** computers?

- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Sheesh, don't take it so personally! It's not like he said that apple was going down the drain because Jobs had aids and cancer.

- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1From my understanding Pancreatic Cancer is terminal? If so, though I am no fan of Apple or Jobs, my best wishes goes out to him and his family.... Can't be a pleasant way to die....
- fuzzynyanko, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Hopefully Jobs trained an underling to take over, otherwise Apple go boom

- ricodued, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1@wphj:
Would you rather he just blindly hate Apple without knowing anything about it?
At least his speculated and hypothetical hate is rational, unlike 99% of the rest of the internet. - bigcynic, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Next in the "Sick CEO" series: "Genital Warts: Do They Help the Share Price or Hurt It?"
- lrdntwnd, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1I think you fail to understand how the executive structure works at Apple. Steve Jobs is not the overbearing, micromanaging "Emperor" you seem to think he is. In fact, he has little to do with the day-to-day operations of the company. Sure he's involved in all the product development and he has final say in all aspects of the company. But, were he to leave the company, they would survive and probably prosper. The best thing Steve did for the company was to hire people like Jonathan Ive and the other members of the design team. He also brought much of his team from NeXT with him. They were all brilliant developers. So, to say that Apple is a one-man show is to underestimate the vast majority of the employees of Apple, Inc..
