Foxconn wins 3G iPhone contract, 3M units shipping in June
engadget.com — Need more unsubstantiated evidence that the 3G iPhone is near. Good, the Chinese language Commercial Times is quoting sources claiming that Foxconn -- the maker of the 1st gen iphone -- is ramping up 3G iPhone assembly by "the end of May" to ship 3 million units in June.

- stevene, on 04/28/2008, -4/+51Does anybody really doubt that there will BE a 3g iPhone? Isn't it really just a matter of when?
- blackjack75, on 04/28/2008, -2/+2I for one didn't doubt the first one would be 3G (since every other phone selling in my country already was back then). I was wrong.
- mochaman, on 04/28/2008, -9/+17I hope they have a 32 GB version available, but I'll take 3G + Outlook, at least it will justify the expense of replacing my BlackBerry. I'll get music plus web, OGC.

- miriv365, on 04/28/2008, -1/+6I have a Palm Treo 700wx. I can't stand this phone (probably shouldn't have gotten the Palm OS version instead of Windows Mobile 5). I have to consistently reboot it at least 4-5 times a day. It will randomly freeze. If I launch Opera, switch applications, Opera won't come back online, and I have to shut down the whole phone. Yesterday my contract with Verizon Wireless ended. Although I will be sad to cut them loose (as they have been my cell provider for many years, and I have been VERY pleased with them), I am waiting anxiously for the 3G iPhone to be released so I can have a nice birthday present for myself.

- GregFD3S, on 04/28/2008, -2/+5I have had the Palm Treo 700wx, and now I have an HTC XV6800. So I have used Windows Mobile 5 and 6. Needless to say, I can't WAIT for the iPhone to come out with 3G.
Suck It Microsoft!- gn0stik, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1I like the xv6800. I'd like it better with windows mobile 7, but overall I found it to be a decent phone. Palm sux to be sure, but that's hardware, bugs are OS independent on the 700 series phones. Utter POSes. But seriously have you seen WM7, it's amazing!, definite iphone competition!
http://microsoft.blognewschannel.com/archives/2008 ... - piznut, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2Yes! Windows Mobile you can suck the iPhone's complete lack of support for 3G, integrated OR bluetooth gps, removeable storage, user replaceable batteries and a robust and mature development environment..suck it indeed.
- Tenoq, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2And yet people sitll buy them in droves. How unusual that people value interface over features - I guess the features are pointless if they're a PITA to use.

- DJRobX, on 04/28/2008, -1/+2The worst part about Windows Mobile is that there's just no excuse for how bad it is. Microsoft has been shoehorning Windows CE into mobile phones for years now (my boss had very buggy/clunky PocketPC phone in 2002). Microsoft should have the art of mobile phones refined and perfected by now.
Apple is a newcomer, yet their "Version 1" knocked it out of the park with consumers on the first shot. People who groan about all of the hype regarding the iPhone should realize that the craze was not created by blind Apple loyalty, but rather, people desperate for a better smartphone. iPhone is not perfect, but I think they really delivered what people were hoping for. 3G on iPhone is really going to be amazing.
This knocks out my primary gripe. I just wish they'd address some of the easier ones:
1) MMS support. How hard can this be to implement?
2) A2DP hifi bluetooth headset support
3) Voice dialing
4) BT PAN for mobile broadband connect via laptop
5) Video recording - etx313, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Google still wins. My windows mobile is now a android phone!
- LilBoyLuver, on 04/28/2008, -3/+47I for one cannot wait until they release it so that I can hear people bitch about all of the features it is still missing.

/s - LaSepultura, on 04/28/2008, -4/+9I sold my TyTN II and bought an iPhone. I thought i can get by with the superior web browser with edge speeds and the google maps instead of a GPS. I was wrong. I miss my 3G and GPS soooooo much.
3G will fix one of my problems, but I really hope Apple adds either an integrated GPS chip or at least support for a Bluetooth GPS.- texpundit, on 04/28/2008, -2/+1GPS is already kind of available, but I think it's through cell tower triangulation. My buddy has an iPhone and if we're walking somewhere (this is in DC) and need to find local restaurants, he can go to Google Maps, hit the location button (I think that's how he does it) and then put in "restaurants" and it shows all the listed ones around us. One more button hit gets us directions.
I can't wait until June. - cthellis, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2I tend to value full-strength, good, Google Maps access more than a street-by-street GPS. I can get the data I want, high-fidelity maps (with satellite! ;-) ), and not pay an extra surcharge for it.
The iPhone may roll in a GPS soon, too, but it's not something I'd miss, despite my use of VZ Navigator. Google Maps is much quicker to access, intelligent, and has a lot more entries... an on the iPhone it still gives you a good locational and street-by-street directions if you want. (Just not an auto-updating one.)
The information is more valuable on a cell phone than the directions, especially since you really can't look at them while driving, so it's not going to replace a good dash-mount GPS.

- oakj423, on 04/28/2008, -5/+27i won't complain if/when 3G comes, but i've been using my iphone on edge and for browsing site to site, checking email, etc its not that bad. yes, its quicker when i'm on wifi, but not so much so that i'd run out and buy a new phone or pay more for the service
(bury me now)- ArkAngel06, on 04/28/2008, -3/+3No, I agree with you.....Mine loads a standard webpage (like digg, or gizmodo) in about 15 seconds on EDGE.....Its not hard to wait that long....Of course if your on WiFi, it loads in about 2 seconds. I'm just worried that the 3g iPhone will have a lot more features than the current one, and I will be mad I didnt wait a few months.....Oh well, I'm sure there will be copy-cat apps available on Installer anyways.
- uberamd, on 04/28/2008, -0/+5I agree with you too, I will not be selling my iPhone for the 3G one, just not worth it. The EDGE one is great, and WiFi is usually around anyway.
- surfing, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1My iPhone is quicker than my Sprint 6700.
- dddavid, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0Really? I love my iPhone, but I do find it pretty slow. I've never had 3G, so don't know how much quicker it is supposed to be, but I'm anxious to get my hands on it.
- DJRobX, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0AT&T's 3G is much like a low end broadband connection. So, the browsing experience should be similar to using your existing iPhone on a wifi network. In Arizona, I was able to download files at around 1.5mbps, which I was pretty impressed with.

- mrfreeziexp, on 04/28/2008, -4/+5Good, I'm so sick of EDGE. Hopefully ATT won't raise the iPhone plan cost, that could be a deal breaker.
- Philbert, on 04/28/2008, -3/+1I don't know much about various phone companies and new technologies relating to phones and all, but I don't think you're going to see 3G on AT&T any time soon.
- hojo05, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Umm, AT&T already has 3G in metro areas of the United States. Rural areas do not get to use 3G, if thats what you mean. My Nokia 6555 has 3G capabilities but I can't use them because I live in a rural area and the towers only have the EDGE network installed.

- uberamd, on 04/28/2008, -11/+5From what I understand, the iPhone Pro will be 3G, the standard will remain EDGE. So, unless you want to pay ~$500 for the 3G version (I am taking the base iPhone @ $400 and adding $100 because it seems reasonable), I don't see the benefit. 95% of the time I use my iPhone, WiFi is in range so there is no reason to even use EDGE. To me, a $500 phone seems damn insane, I feel dumb for paying $400 for one, I would never pay more.

- jdames1980, on 04/28/2008, -1/+11Foxconn did a good job with the 1st gen. The build quality is amazing, especially for a 1st generation device.
- farblong, on 04/28/2008, -2/+3I'm sorry...their quality is sub-par at best. Build quality is more than just does the case fit together well. I had to go through seven (yes, seven) iPhones after they first came out to get around faulty batteries, antennas, loose SIM sockets, and fried speakers.
I'm actually not sure if it's Foxconn or Apple that specifies lower-than-standard specs on their components, but a recent mac mini I bought also had a blown speaker and poorly seated memory.
Apple's quality is going to ***** faster than you can read this post.- mgrest, on 04/28/2008, -1/+4Remember, your iPhone is built by the lowest bidder...

- diggSJaustin, on 04/28/2008, -1/+6I for one would be happy because then I could buy a used 1st gen iPhone on the cheap.
- Picer, on 04/28/2008, -0/+7I hope they bump up the power of the battery to compensate the effect of 3G, or make the battery last even longer than the 1st gen.
- mrsteve007, on 04/28/2008, -2/+11If they'll allow me to tether the 3G iPhone (and it's connection) to my laptop, then I'll get one. Until that time, count me (and my office) out as a potential customer.

I'm so sick of the "The iphone can't do X" or "The X phone can do this and the iphone can't." Great. Stick with your own phone and stfu. Obviously a lot of people like the iphone and are content with its feature set. Nobody gives a crap that your phone has some other neat trick not available on the iphone.- bingobongony, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1Definte a lot...there is a reason why Apple's stock tanked in January and why they slahsed their orers of NAND chips. - piznut, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Cool! maybe now the iphones internet experience will approach 'usable'.
As it stands, its completely frustrating and light years behind the windows mobile in this area.- clockdist, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Windows Mobile has nothing to do with a usable Internet experience.
