- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Foxconn makes a lot of the shiny toys you covet. It is about the same size as Apple and yet few people outside the tech world have heard of it.
Foxconn:
Revenue: $28.3 billion USD (2005)
Operating income: $1.5 billion USD (2005)
Net income: $1.3 billion USD (2005)
Apple:
Revenue : US$17.3 billion (TTM 1Q2006)]
Operating income: US$2.12 billion (TTM 1Q2006)
Net income: US$1.73 billion (TTM 1Q2006)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Computer - TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Apple's corporate culture evolved from a single company and not as is typical by buying other companies and trying to find a middle ground. This has allowed Apple to resist a more common culture of profit to focus on intangibles like creativity and aesthetic. Buying random companies and tacking them on might endanger this.
- n0rth_star, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Can't wait for apple to enter this area. The MP3 function on my phone is such a joke I don't know where to start. Wont even let me use normal headphones, I have to use the handsfree ones. Which seem to be made for giant ear canals...
- isewise, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11"...according to an overseas report."

Step 1 & 2 in the cycle are represented in this digg story. - ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That better be a joke or else I'm going to laugh at you so hard your self-esteem won't recover until the next ice age thaws out.
No way the iPhone is going to be any cheaper for the functionality than a mid- to high-range phone costs today. - finalmillenium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Foxconn is worth more than Apple. And I don't think that Intel, AMD, or any of the motherboard manufacturers would let them.
- haooken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7http://www.edharriss.com/images/fun/iproduct.jpg
- soapboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well allow me to start speculating....
This phone would be Tri-Band GSM, I can say so with about 97% certainty. Sprint/Nextel CDMA networks are too proprietary (a mish-mosh of Motorola and Qualcom equipment), and many of the better carriers such as T-Mobile are GSM. Their last flirt with a cell phone was made by motorola for Cingular and was GSM compatible.
Most carriers outside the US use GSM, most prevalently in Europe. Expect compatibility with T-Mobile, Cingular/AT&T, and any other carrier that uses GSM. That excludes Verizon and Sprint/Nextel.
Also, be prepared for this phone to cost you. A lot. More than you would normally expect for even an Apple product. Cellular companies subsidise the cost of their phones to attract subscribers, and then make up that cost by charging more for monthly recurring services. So, in essence, you only pay $50 dollars for a $300 dollar phone, when the carrier makes all that back and more if you stay for your entire 2-3 year contract.
If Apple sells this phone by itself in their stores with no agreement/commitment to a certain carrier, then it will be:
A. Pricey
B. Have a short shelf life (phones are almost disposable nowadays)
C. A customer service nightmare ("WHY DOESNT MY iPHONE WORK WITH CARRIER XYZ??)
They risk losing a great deal of brand quality in doing that. I would be surprised if that happened. - wphj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Wow, you are hilarious.
Did everyone see what he did there? He put the letter "i" in there in a way to make fun of apple. You know "i" like in iPod? That is just so original. I've never seen anyone use it out of context like that. Ever. - MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3finalmillenium is right.
Believe it or not, Hon Hai makes more money than Apple.
@maxplanar, Hon Hai owns 70% of foxconn. Hon Hai is only traded in Taiwan.
Hon Hai != Foxconn - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I gotta laugh at hte fanboys. The SAME hypocrites who were blasting Microsofot for trying to enter the already crwoded market of MP3 player sabout 4 years too late and now ejaculating into their palms over the fact that Apple MAY BE (as this is still just yet another rumor) entering a FAR more crowded market at least EIGHT years too late.
- auxplage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ok . . . laugh, laugh.
I do not want a $50 phone.
I want a phone that replaces my iPod and costs no more than $400.
I do not want 2 devices. I just want an iPod Nano combined with a phone, and I will buy one very quickly:
Phone at $200 + iPod Nano at $200 = a Phone that is able to sync with my Mac at $400 (am willing to spend up to $500). - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I was about to call dupe on the story, when I realized koregaonpark just submitted this twice from two different sources. Looks like we'll see double front page stories about the latest "OMG Apple's making the iPhone 4 REALZ this time!!!" rumor...
http://digg.com/apple/iPod_manufacturer_reportedly_wins_iPhone_contract_2 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm looking forward to the iPhone! I just hope that Apple doesn't decide to become a mobile phone service reseller and come up with their own plans... I would much rather the phones be available for many different providers (Verizon, T-Mobile, etc)
- haooken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@dougless
Hahaha, true. true. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't think it's fair to digg the poster down - the iPod could actually be cheaper in that an Apple phone would let you do most things through your computer instead of trying to force you to buy everything (like wallpaper or ringtones) over an expensive network.
The other guy makes a good point as well about phones being generally cheap now, and that you can buy a phone (actually even as low as $30) that you then pay by the minute for, which is a far better deal if you don't talk all that often.
I am looking forward to the Apple phone, but my purchase of one would totally depend on what it offers in the way of computer/phone integration and usefulness. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3dunno why you were dugg down as this will be an important factor in determining who will have access to this phone
- cair0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If housing and food took up only half my salary, I'd be making a lot more money.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The RETAIL price (meaning no contract agreements) of phones that DONT suck and do more than just make phone calls with the occasional 25 character text message start at around $150 retail. All those free phones you get when signing up for a cellphone plan usually start at that price if you were to buy it retail unlocked, and those are the low end phones and usually start around that price. The RAZR has been out for a year or so now and is still $200-$300 retail and that's probably considered a midrange phone. The new blackberry pearl and sidekick 3 are $350-$400. The treo 650 is around $500-$600.
I said it before, don't be surprised if the iPhone gets up to $600 (or $300 with a 3 year soul sucking agreement to verizon/sprint/cingular/tmobile/etc.) if it wants to compete with the functionality of today's phones as well as incorporate all the stuff in the iPod. - primehifi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Does anyone know a list of prospective carriers for this phone? Canadian and American? Also will this be CDMA or GSM only, or both?
- wintermute0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unless you knit your own gitch from organic hemp, about 75% of your posessions are likely made by underpaid foreign workers.
- wintermute0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Housing and food for around 27 pounds doesn't seem like that bad of a deal, really. About half of my income goes to survial and transport to work as it is.
- hmemcpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You mean, iSlaves?
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even if it isn't, it won't be long till the Russianscrack the unlock codes.
1. Create unlocking program for an overpriced phone everyone wants.
2. sell the keys for 40 dollars.
3. Profi.... ah screw it. - Waredgo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um, maybe because since Foxconn is the largest elctronics manufacturer in the world, they are worth more than Apple?
- ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1superkendall:
You think a company that wants to charge you $5 for an iPod game is going to let consumers get off scot-free when trying to put on our own custom wallpapers? And who are you kidding, they're already charging you for ringtones: $0.99 per song. Granted, it IS cheaper than traditional stores, and it is the whole song.
Other than that I don't think the wireless carriers and/or Apple are going to do much different than every other phone ever (why should they, especially the wireless networks?). Hell, knowing Verizon it's going to be restricted to death :) - MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@maxplanar
Here are the numbers to prove you wrong.
http://www.chinapost.com.tw/business/detail.asp?GRP=E&id=84130
In June, Hon Hai was already worth $40 Billion US. They are targeting $67 Billion US by 2008. (Hon Hai is one of Taiwan's hottest stocks; their CEO won't be dumb enough to be throwing out numbers they know they can't reach)
Hon Hai is of similar size to Apple as of right now and will probably surpass them in a year or 2. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1drlha...PROVE it wth the Zune or PC. Becuase hthe OP just proved it with Apple products.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The reason he's dugg down I assume is that nobody on digg knows the answers to these questions. Any answers would be pure speculation.
- hcl40u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cases
Foxconn makes a range of computer cases designed to appeal to computer modders as well as system builders.
Motherboards
Foxconn designs and manufactures several different motherboards, with many being sold to OEM distributors such as Dell and HP. Starting in 2003 the company has produced retail boards under its own brand name.
Graphics cards
In March 2006, Foxconn branched into the manufacture of graphics cards, starting with a GeForce 7900GTX (branded as PX7900GTX) at clock speeds of 550 MHz / 1320 MHz for the core and memory respectively, but with intentions to market both NVIDIA and ATi boards.
Consoles
Foxconn OEMs the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and PS3.
iPods
Foxconn is one of the OEMs for iPod nanos.
Computers
In addition to providing PCA's and Chassis, Foxconn manufactures computers for HP in accordance with strict SOP rules.
Cell Phones
Foxconn OEMs Motorola cell phones.
Hardly fishy if they manufacture all these products. - bimmerboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In yesterday's news from Hong Kong. Foxconn will invest US1.3b to beef up production to meet demands of mobile handsets. They presently make handsets for Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Nokia. But to invest that much can only mean one thing. To meet demands for an iPhone? ;)

Wrong again. You're confusing a company's revenue ("they MAKE more than Apple") with valuation ("they're WORTH more than Apple"). The net WORTH or valuation of Apple is FAR higher than Foxconn or Hon Hai. It's simply a much bigger company. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How SAD that you say "If anyone can get this right it will be Apple." You DO realize that they have had FAR more misses than hits in their history, right?
- primehifi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe the people who dugg me down misunderstood the question or didn't/don't understand what I'm asking.
It is a valid point, specifically for those of us in Canada, where Bell is CDMA and Rogers is GSM.
Some phones can do both (not necessarily at the same time) like the RAZR for instance.
Also, Bell tends to be uber slow at launching new phones. This phone could be a huge boost for someone like Rogers who don't do well in certain provinces because of coverage issues. I'm sure there are valid reasons for this question state side as well, I just don't know first hand any issues there may be. - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3What makes you think where Zune or your PC are made are any different?
- m00dy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wonder what kind of OS it would have?
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i may just be naive, but is there really that big a market for cellys that play mp3s? of all the people i know who have a phone that plays mp3s (including mine), no one ever seems to use it. they use their ipod, or something else.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Grak, I meant to say the iPhone could be cheaper than other phones. Even lamer since I didn't notice until just after the edit expired - my apologies.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wphj...I mocked you for using the $ in MS recently. And your put down was almost word for word of what I said. Talk about hypocritical.
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Oh Nos... lets just hope the phones don't explode like Foxconns shoddy powersupply units found in xbox's :S take it with a grain of salt.
PS. I dugg ^ you down for the whoring - tzon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Seriously, I hope this will be the first mobile phone that doesn't suck. I'm on my 3rd phone in 6 years and everytime I've looked to upgrade, I've been unimpressed with any offerings from any manufacturer, so I opt for the freebie with service plan. If anybody can get this right it will be Apple
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Yay a phone made by slaves!!!!
- minusxthexbear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+115" macbooks for by january for realsies? i think i read somewhere that it wasn't for sure.
- kwilliam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Actually, it sounds "foxy" to me.
- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Most phones are free with a plan.
And you can get them for like $50 and pay per minute. - MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Inside China's iPod sweat-shops
A British paper sent a reporter to "iPod City," the plant in Longhua, China, where iPods are assembled by women who earn $50/month for working 15 hour days.
My guess is that this is no worse than the conditions in which Powerbooks, Thinkpads, Zens, Linksys routers, etc are manufactured, but Christ, this is depressing.
The Mail visited some of these factories and spoke with staff there. It reports that Foxconn's Longhua plant houses 200,000 workers, remarking: "This iPod City has a population bigger than Newcastle's."
The report claims Longhua's workers live in dormitories that house 100 people, and that visitors from the outside world are not permitted. Workers toil for 15-hours a day to make the iconic music player, the report claims. They earn £27 per month. The report reveals that the iPod nano is made in a five-storey factory (E3) that is secured by police officers.
Another factory in Suzhou, Shanghai, makes iPod shuffles. The workers are housed outside the plant, and earn £54 per month - but they must pay for their accommodation and food, "which takes up half their salaries", the report observes. - pyro858, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2They been talking about this iPhone for years and really iDont give a *****
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Digg me down if you like your current phone?
- maxplanar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1@finalmillenium: *****. Apple's current valuation is about $50bn. Hon Hai which trades as Foxconn is worth about $6bn.
- MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Almost as original as iPhone iRonic isn't it?
