- iching, on 10/12/2007, -16/+105Well, there goes my premium prescription for my iPod that costs $50 a year so I can listen to his dribble. Now, I will have to follow Bill's lead and no longer "wear" my iPod.
thanks for the tech update Bill!
What an @ss.
I wonder if he will get my e-mail? - Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -14/+63Looks like the War on Christmas is starting early this year, this time their targeting main stream electronic devices that are gonna be huge sellers this holiday season.... Stay tuned for more details....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45I don't own an ipod but I'll freely say I've seen more lives devasted from WoW than any music player.
I'm not hating on WoW I'm telling it like it is. - exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -18/+55It came out bad, I'll admit that, but the editing the digg submitter did didn't help. Ever heard of ellipses?
Reading the article, his point, while not clearly expressed, seem to be that technology, in general, doesn't bring us closer together, but isolates each of us in our own world. His anecdotal evidence to support this was communicating with an average nerd.
Is it accurate? Somewhat. When people go through their day listening to music, it reduces human interaction, slowly making teamwork harder.
Jihadists?! Ok, that was 100% Bill O'Reilly, there. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+46Does that mean O'Reilly supports the Zune?
- seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -10/+48only jihadists read the intertubes!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+48Well to these idiots information is dangerous, the more we get the less credible they become.
- Tracon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29make sure you ignore the Walkman from the 1980's then the disc man's of the 1990's because those obviously couldn't have done what the Ipod has done *rolls eyes*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33This reminds me of the hypocrisy he was pushing last year in his "war on christmas" when Foxnews.com was selling "Holiday Ordiments" for "Holiday Trees".
- tomaszpw, on 10/12/2007, -8/+31O'Reilly is a ***** IDIOT.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -12/+35For O'Reilly, ignorance = bliss
Maybe he should tell Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Steve Case, Larry Ellison, Michael Dell and others that they are unable to carry on a conversation. Yeah, tech geeks have trouble with conversations. I understand the traditiionalist point of view, having kids myself. But most of his comments are absurd. What about his crack staff that does ALL of that "research"? Show us the numbers that prove iPods are somehow making people inable to communicate. No Proof? That's what I thought.
It is obvious the spin STARTS at the O'Reilly Factor door. What a jackass. - brianbennett, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I don't have any particular contempt for O'Reilly but this is pretty senseless. The iPod isn't even related to his 'point.'
- toomuchgreentea, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28Quote: "I don’t own an iPod. I would never wear an iPod… If this is your primary focus in life - the machines… it’s going to have a staggeringly negative effect, all of this, for America… did you ever talk to these computer geeks? I mean, can you carry on a conversation with them? …I really fear for the United States because, believe me, the jihadists? They’re not playing the video games. They’re killing real people over there."
Switch
"own"/"wear" to "watch"
"an iPod" to "Bill O'Reilly"
"the machines" to "conservative talkshows"
"computer geeks" to "nutcases"
"video games" to "political games"
and read the whole thing over again.
Now THAT makes a lot more sense. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+36NO, JUST DEAF :)
- thescimitar, on 10/12/2007, -12/+30Bill O'Reilly doesn't care what he says, and probably doesn't believe half of it either. Why? Because he's an entertainer. He's capitalizing on a market (granted, it's a market of idiots). Part of his stock portfolio, which is no doubt vast considering how wealthy said idiots have made him, probably has a few shares in Apple, along with any other consistent tech performer. I don't believe anything he says, half because most of it is nonsense, and half because ALL of it is theater.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"I really fear for the United States because, believe me, the jihadists? They’re not playing the video games. They’re killing real people over there."
I fear for the United States when people like Bill O'Reilly are spewing their negativity for ignorant America to absorb. This man doesn't not have a positive thing to say about anyone or anything. - FrostySol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15so... Bill's saying we should put down our iPods and start killing "real people" like the jihadists?
- paku, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Does this guy ever make sense? Doesn't he listen to himself, or has a least one friend who's like "dude.. that doesn't make sense.."?
- seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21do as he says not as he does.
- reeder, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18O'Reilly is endangering America.
- RamanujanRedux, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17iPods are endangering America? But how am I supposed to listen to your podcast on the way to work?
Oh well, guess I shouldn't pay for his radio show at http://www.billoreilly.com/membership. Thanks for the heads up Bill. - Homerr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14So if the terrorists use the internets* does this mean we shouldn't use them either?
- thejitters, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I find it pretty funny when people pretty much repeat the dribble that was said by generations past. Weren't they saying the same thing about the radio and television? You'd think they'd learn...
- MisterSmith, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Positive comments would be bad for ratings.
- curunir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"And it's not just Bill, it's Glenn, Rush... and any other talking head or speaking voice..."
You forgot Bill Maher, Keith Olberman, Dan Rather, Matt Lauer, Anderson Cooper, Michael Moore, Al Franken, awww.. there's just too many. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Touché, modern media can only get people's attention by scaring the ***** out of them. O'Reilly is a prime example of that.
- socket, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12roflcopter.
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=bill_oreilly
That's all you need to know about Bill. - meltingrobot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@patience
Why do you think everybody has to be social? Some people are happy and fine on their own. As long as I don't have to pay tax money to support them, I don't care if somebody locks themself away from the world. - JettaMan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15O'Reilly didn't actually say iPods are endangering America, contrary to the title of this Digg. He just made the point that Americans are entertainment-obsessed and might be losing sight of more important things. That's it. Sorry to rain on the hate parade here.
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8so we should stop being smart and kill jihadists?
- elhaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Let's see... his logic is that Jihadists aren't playing video games, they're killing real people. So our kids should be more like them, and stop playing video games and start killing people. No wait, he's complaining that they are doing exactly that, by fighting over PS3's in lines. Wearing iPod's. OK, Bill, what the hell is your point?
- perryge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"I really fear for the United States because, believe me, the jihadists? They’re not playing the video games. They’re killing real people over there."
Wait a sec. Does he...want us to be killing real people? That seems to be what follows from his argument. - musicbear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@thescimitar
You are stunningly absolutely correct. If it was pink teddy bears that would whip up a controversial TV segment, Bill would be all over it. And it's not just Bill, it's Glenn, Rush... and any other talking head or speaking voice that have a show based solely on contentious / illogical "debate" or controversial statements - it's all entertainment and money. If they got more power and dollars arguing the other side, they'd switch in a heart beat. As far as their "books" go, I liken them to the CSI or Buffy novels - it's just more merch and marketing to sell their shows... fiction / reality... it really doesn't figure in... the pay day is the real bottom line. - Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Wow unbelievable! I found this particular statement rather humorous.
"Basically what you have is a large portion of the population, mostly younger people under the age of 45, who don’t deal with reality - ever. So they don’t know what day it is; they don’t know temperature it is; they don’t know what their neighbor looks like. They don’t know anything… because they are constantly diverted by a machine. Now what this does is it takes a person away from reality because they’ve created their own reality…"
Now I'll pick this apart to show why I think it's so funny but it's true!
"Basically what you have is a large portion of the population, mostly younger people under the age of 45, who don’t deal with reality - ever."
I'm 35 and more in touch with reality than this guy is, that's for sure!"
"So they don’t know what day it is; they don’t know temperature it is"
A quick glance at my Firefox web browser tells me it's Monday November 20th, and the temperature is 41F outside. I don't even have to poke my head out the door to know it's cold out there. I also don't need any piece of tech to tell me it's monday because today is the start of my work week. Yes I know what day this is Bill.
"they don’t know what their neighbor looks like."
Both my neighbors on each side of me are Mexican, very nice people. The older lady across the street is also quite friendly as well.
"They don’t know anything… because they are constantly diverted by a machine."
Yeah that Apple II they introduced me to when I was in elementary school taught me nothing. I mean that cute little fishing game didn't teach me anything.. Except for math which was the only thing that made math fun for me.
"Now what this does is it takes a person away from reality because they’ve created their own reality…"
This reality was already 35 years in the making.. Well at least for me anyway. If he thinks video games and iPods are what skews a persons reality, then I'm going to out right say he's a hypocrite. I don't care what news channel he's on, they are all slanted and are more damaging to society than any tech he is attacking. - rivercityjessie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8i love how he basically admits that he knows nothing about technology by saying that it is hard to talk to/understand a computer geek, but then acts like it is the geeks fault for not speaking in layman's terms.
Bill wouldn't bother me so much if i could convince my grandfather that he is full of *****. I get into never ending arguments about O'Reilly and Coulter and eventually have to give up because there is no changing grandpa's mind. - TNHitokiri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5o RLY?
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6
Once again, like so many bloggers posted on digg, he's taking O'Reilly's comments out of context. - Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If Apple keeps selling iPods, the terrorists win. Makes sense to me. :-/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well, O'Reilly is endangering common sense and we still tolerate him. It's only fair he should show a little tolerance to the pod.
Just can't come to grips with the fact the political landscape shifted out from under him. Really sad to watch. - superrcat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7O'Reilly is just sore at technology because 'machines' (voice mail and cell phones) were used as evidence against him when he sexually harassed a co-worker.
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/1013043mackris1.html - alky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here's how it happened:
O'reilly: Hello.
Nerd: ***** off, O'reilly. I hate you and your crazy ideas.
O'reilly: IPODS ARE KILLING AMERICA - Astravian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'm just glad my wife is in the Audiology business. Hearing loss is rapidly becoming a large problem and that means more hearing aid customers for her.
- matthewmok, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11He is a moron; worse, he acts like a conservative and is not.
Anyway IPods can be used for far more than Music. University lectures, Books, etc. can all be put on an IPod -- so you can learn while doing other brainless tasks. - JoJoDilio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This man is my hero. If I knew that I could be famous and rich and make a living by being a stupid bigot who's sole job was to shout inflammatory remarks over people while "debating" them... god I'd drop out of school right now.
Who needs a CS degree when you can just spout BS all day? - Sujay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Then why does Bush own one?
- C0MF0RTABLYnumb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6No Bill O'Reilly you are endangering America with your non-sense biased "facts".
- Sentinel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Why do people listen to this idiot?
- fredfredburger2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8yet another 3-second snippet taken completely out of context and titled in a misleading fashion in hopes of getting the liberal herd-mentality group to spam the Digg button.
He never, at any point, said "Ipods are endangering America". He was long into a tirade about PS3s and technology used as escapism. He only mentioned ipods as one, of many, forms of escapism.
While I don't agree with his point of view at all, I further dislike the growing trend of Digg submitters intentionally posting links to nutjob bloggers and extremists "news" associations which continually spout nonsense and lies. - MikeZila, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5What a ***** toolbox.
I've said that a lot lately. - polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5He is endangering America.
