Forget iPhone Bricking: All Third-Party Apps Void Your iPhone Warranty
gizmodo.com — Apple just confirmed that running any third party app will bust up your warranty. Pretty ***** way to reward the programmers who made the iPhone better than stock.

Sorry, I'm sick and I need help.- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7ah and to think three weeks ago I was dugg down for pointing out that Apple was considered the big bad evil company back in the mid 1980's when Apple basically defined PC's. Apple was always the big bad evil company with a slick image. Back then many even thought of Microsoft as the savior. But alas, most in Digg can't remember this.
Anyway its 2007, Apple shares are rising and once its back in the lime light, whats the first thing to happen?
Luckily I could just do a firmware restoration if I have to bring in my phone for the warranty. Luckily. Keep up with the scene and you should be okay. Various developers are not giving up on third party apps for the iPhone just like no one gave up on third party apps for the PSP, XBOX, XBOX360, and so on.- LocalDocal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Business 101 - Make people believe you're with them

"All iPhones with Third Party Apps are Ineligible for Warranty Service"
Congrats Gizmodo, your crazy sensationalist headline got dugg.
Nevermind that unless you're unlocking, restoring it is as easy as... well, "restoring" before you take it in for service. If you're phone is so bad off, that you can't restore it, and you're essentially caught with your "pants down" when you bring it back to the Apple... that's the risk you run by changing the installed software. As long as you're still on AT&T, the phone should mostly function properly. If you've mamed your phone though with unlock software that doesn't go away after a full restore... how the hell is Apple supposed to help you? "Oh, I see you're problem, you're vibration motors died because you used iBrator all night long." Right.- Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3Thanks for bring a hint of logic into this conversation. Unless you ran an Unlocking app that modified your phone's firmware, then a simple restore will put everything back in order before you take your phone in for service, hell a restore may have been all it needed to begin with, Of course, diggers don't want to hear anything about that.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7What are you talking about? EVEN SONY will repair a hacked PSP. Of Sony will upgrade you to the latest firmware they have, but they will honor their warranty. People that did that, simply waited a few weeks and then cracked their PSP when hacks for the new firmware became available.
Why Apple won't honor their warranty for an unlocked phone or with installed applications is beyond me. Its just software, they could easily restore it. - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2What are you talking about? EVEN SONY will repair a hacked PSP. Its just software, they could easily restore it. - bovox, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1It is quite possible for the software to cause the hardware to operate in ways that were not intended. It can cause mechanical problems. It can cause overheating. What if the CPU on the thing burned out because the software caused it to run too hot? You can't hold Apple responsible for the hardware because you forced the iPhone to operate outside of acceptable parameters with your third-party apps.
- cbuddha42, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Bovox: No one tried to overclock their iphone. Removing the restrictions on what companies sim you put in it has nothing to do with the clock speed. Stop being a dumb ass.

- Konstantino, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And would you support a consumer who accidentally messed up their phone by unlocking it?
- RogerStrong, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Remember the old "1984" Mac commerical? It's amazing how it was for a machine that was far more locked down than it's competitors. Apple became "Big Brother", and PC's were the open system that offered freedom. Didn't like DOS? This little company called Microsoft was trying to convince people that Unix on PCs was the way of the future. (Yeah, really.) 25 years later it's the same story for cell phone PDAs. You're free to install any software you want on Windows Mobile phones, or write your own with a variety of products. Apple phones are locked down, and should you defeat the locks you void the warranty.
- AvidPreatorian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3i think you're trying to convince yourself that you don't want an iPhone, and i dont think it's working
- RogerStrong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No thanks. I already have a Pocket PC phone. Offer me an iPhone for the same price, and I'll take the Pocket PC every time.
It has a huge library of software available for it - even a huge library of free software.
I can (and do) write my own apps for it.
It has a much faster data connection.
It has a replacable battery - unlike the iPhone it won't become a brick in four years when the battery dies.
It has a fold-out qwerty keyboard.
It supports far more file formats for free - music, video, PDFs, etc.

http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2007/09/ ... - SenatorPenguin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This whole thing is utterly worthless news. The iPhone is designed to never run native 3rd party code. If you hack it so that it does (and just running Installer.app technically is a hack) they don't need to service your iPhone. It's like adding RAM to an eMachine (neither is a real computer). They can offer you support, but that is totally at their own discretion. Warrantee policies generally suck, but I thought that was already established.

- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -22/+98A big "***** you" right back at you, Apple! Requiring restoring before applying an update, I can understand. Voiding my warranty if 3rd party software is present, even for a completely unrelated failure? That's unacceptable. Apple is going to have to hurry up and release an SDK if they don't want to piss off all their customers for good...
- daza, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Unfortunately people will still continue to buy the iPhone SDK or not. The masses will flock to it soon enough, surely after a couple more price-drops and a new model or two. This is probably why AAPL haven't released it and won't, it will sell regardless.
- Lyph5, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6"a completely unrelated failure?"
Your 3rd party software may write somewhere that the update isn't looking for something to be written. That causes a brick and Apple doesn't have to replace it.
I have installer.app and plan on waiting a day to see what people's experiences are with the update before I jump in.- cbuddha42, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A brick is a software issue. There is no reason apple can not restore it. The only reason you can't restore it is because apple made it hard for you to get write access to the disk. That's why you have to jailbreak your iphone before you can unlock it.
- Angostura, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5I smell a class action suit coming if installing any third party app really does void the warrantee.
- craterburnsu, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8You'd lose that suit. They say outright they don't support it, which means you are modifying the phone, and can you take a game console back after modding it? i don't think so.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5This is more like somebody refusing to take back a pc after I install a game they didnt make on it.
- skinfitz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2...not really because you don't have to hack and modify a PC to install a game. It would be more accurate to describe a situation where someone refuses to take back a Windows Mobile 5 smart phone because you flashed it's PROM with an illegal hacked together copy of Windows Mobile 6 and broke it in the process.
- bsl4doc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5No, it's really not. Have you ever bought a PC that is explicitly label "ONLY INSTALL DELL SOFTWARE OR YOUR WARRANTY IS VOIDED!!!11!!one!!eleven!!!!"
PCs are MEANT to be used and modified with software. Apple feels that the iPhone is fully functional out of the box. If you don't think it is, then go buy a different handheld. - cbuddha42, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Apple never said that the phone would not be supported if you installed 3rd party software. They said that 3rd party software was not supported. This means you don't get help writing the software (sdk, documentation, ect), not that the software should void the warrenty.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5This is more like somebody refusing to take back a pc after I install a game they didnt make on it.

Comon now. Quit your bitching. - superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Just restore before bringing it in for service. How hard is that? You think it's reasonable before an update, why not then the much less frequent trip to Apple support?
Basically it makes sense because how can APple diagnose a problem you may be having, if you have software not meant for the system that might be causing the problem you think is hardware?- bovox, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2This was addressed a few comments ago. What if the third party app writes to an area of the iPhone that the installer doesn't overwrite? If that happens, it will not restore correctly resulting in a brick.

You install unsupported software on your phone, you accept the risks. I don't care how easy the dev community makes it to install - Apple is under no obligation to support any problems caused by unsupported software.
If you have a real issue, you should have tried restoring the phone's software already, anyway. This is a non-issue.- tobsterius, on 10/10/2007, -6/+28You've said all I wanted to say, so I'm just gonna quote this part for emphasis:

- Devrdander, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16Firefox doesn't modify the core OS like the unlocking utilities do, Also apple doesn't make a development frame work for iphones or encourage third parties to make programs for it. Your analogy is complete crap.

Awesome.
- webphreak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I think the point is that if you iPhone does break from some OTHER reason that you don't have a warranty. Because it's unlikely that most apps will ***** it... but just because you have some simple application that apple didn't make they can refuse to repair it for you. So if the touching part of the screen goes and you have custom apps they don't have to fix it. I find that a little rank? or maybe I'm misguided in the point of all this. Either way I don't care we don't have iPhones here (other than unlocked ones) in New Zealand anyway
- Lyph5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If any hardware fails and you can still hook the iPhone to iTunes and do a restore, do a goddamned restore before you bring the iPhone to an Apple Store.
- sholt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ok, that's a fair point, and one I didn't consider. It's unlikely that a 3rd party app would be the cause of a serious malfunction, like a touchscreen failure or similar.
It's stupid and inconvenient, but the restore process doesn't require any user interaction on the phone to complete; so even with most of the common hardware failures - like a touchscreen failure - you'd still be able to restore the phone. Even if the screen "mysteriously" broke, you could still restore the software on the phone... though I think you'd have a hard time convincing your applecare rep or the mac genius that it was a manufacturing defect in that case.
I would like to point out that the apps on the iPhone do run as root, and have full access to the hardware if they want it. If some 3rd party app were to, say, overwrite all or part of the firmware in an EEPROM, and that action led to a malfunction - that would be your fault, and I doubt any vendor would cover such a scenario.
IMHO, all this nonsense could be avoided if Apple could construct some way for their own communications apps (things that deal with the baseband) to be run with the access they need, while any other apps have no access to potentially destructive bits of the system. Like, say, running the UI as a unprivileged user, then only Apple's apps which need baseband access getting suid to some other user with baseband access. Remove root and full administrative user login completely.
- bumblefoot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2erm, they don't void your warranty for installing linux on a ipod, my 3rd gen ipod got repaired by apple with it on, they just returned it with the original software restored though :-)
- senatorpjt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If installing third party apps on the iPhone can ***** it up enough that it can't be restored, I can completely understand why they wouldn't want to have to spend money to repair it.
- bigfloppydonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3While on the topic, guess what? You can also modify other phones, and if you brick them, it's your problem. I don't see why people are all up in arms over this. If they are really looking for something to actually care about maybe they should go outside.
Apple says that they aren't responsible for it if you change it in a way that it wasn't intended for. A lot of products are like that, gaming consoles anyone? If I try to software mod my xbox and it breaks, is Microsoft responsible? No, I'm one of the few people who seem to understand the risks associated with things like this. - RadiatedAnt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've installed linux on my nano, screen broke, did a quick format and a quick firmware restore and bam! apple gave me a new one... so what it's not like the people who are modding their phones are going to go into the store incriminating themselves... use common sense people.

Incidentally, I conducted similar research around the same time and came to very similar conclusions.- TheMidnight, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Who mentioned Hilary Clinton?

- misteral, on 10/10/2007, -4/+32>> Pretty ***** way to reward the programmers who made the iPhone better than stock.
Though it seems pretty *****, anyone who works in COMMERCIAL development should understand. Though Apple SHOULD have provided an SDK for 3rd party apps, the reality is they didn't. Supporting 3rd party apps would mean little to no API changes, leaving their hands tied if an API doesn't perform or needs changing. It also means developers working to support said API.
Does this mean Apple will never have an API? I'd like to believe that once the iphone is more stable that one will be introduced.- betterth, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1I could make the whole argument "Well I 'believe' in God, but that doesn't mean he exists either". But I'd just be bashing myself there lol.

oh, and screw the openmoko... - munter1942, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33The folks that hacked their iphone are the folks that read tech blogs are the folks that know to restore to factory settings before taking it in for repair

- DeQuinceysDiet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2My currently phucked iPhone turns on sort of briefly, with a date of 12/31 and a message that says "iPhone needs to be repaired"...and displays the Installer icon...and doesn't allow a restore. - bigfkncee, on 10/10/2007, -22/+29wow....$400-$600 on a phone and you cant put whatever software you want on it w/o a problem? Pretty sad.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -10/+4Really, I mean there were some Amiga apps and DX10 games I wanted to put on there but it just didn't work. What? Apple never promised that I could do that before I bought it? Darn it! Well, at least I can put Final Cut Pro on my Vista PC. What? Microsoft didn't make some way to put Mac software on my computer? Alright, then instead I'll put Windows Movie Maker on Linux. What?
- Koldkompress, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5No, it's not like that. It's like having a Mac where the only programs you can use come from Apple. It's a 3rd party lock-out, meaning that Apple can charge $50 for an iPhone app, instead of putting on free software that other people have coded.
Consoles can do this - they lock out games that don't have the Manufacturers approval (Hence why Manhunt 2 just cant be released over the internet - Nintendo won't let it run on the Wii etc). There's a reason why consoles are cheaper than a PC equivalent, they're inflexible. With an iPhone, you're paying a premium price for a second rate phone.- kittynipples, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0If it's just a second rate phone, why are you so worried about running computer applications on it?
- Koldkompress, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's Apple that has relegated the iPhone to be just a second rate phone. The hardware and possibilities for the iPhone are many and varied, but have been severely limited by Apple bricking it into not accepting 3rd party software
- kittynipples, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0If it's just a second rate phone, why are you so worried about running computer applications on it?

If you wanted a phone you could run 3rd party apps on, you should have gotten one that supported them.
Disclaimer: I do have an iPhone.- bigfkncee, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4i do own phones that i can do w/e i want to them. Had a Treo 650(palm apps) and now i own a Moto Q(windows smartphone apps). what's your point?
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6"If you wanted a phone you could run 3rd party apps on, you should have gotten one that supported them."
I think that was his point - bigfkncee, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4and i just said i owned a treo and a Q,i CAN run w/e apps i want on them. so i've met the requirements of what he just said. what was the point of that post? or are you just being a macparrot and sticking up for anything "i"?
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3I don't stick up for any product that I don't use. Case in point: the iPhone. You wanted to be snarky and completely missed.
As I said before. When Apple tells you they don't support third party apps on an iPhone, don't act surprised when they won't honor your warranty for screwing with it. They made this pretty crystal clear when it was released.
I wouldn't expect Microsoft to honor an XBox warranty if you've made hardware or software changes to it either. You own it, do as you please. But don't cry later when it's hosed. - DonCarcharo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The point of that post (two explanations later) is that you shouldn't buy an iPhone. But you didn't so you're okay.
/Move along
//There's nothing to see here - bigfkncee, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3who said i was surprised? i completely expected something like this to happen. i just think its lame for a company to sell a premium phone like that and NOT ALLOW 3rd party apps on it. 3rd party development helps to sell tech products like phones. if you lock down your product and say "you can only put our stuff on it for w/e amount of money we feel like charging", its only going to make people stay away from it. why do you think palm, windows mobile phone and even nokia smartphones have sold like hotcakes for years? Because people can develop software for them and make them better.if you think different then youre just a tool,as your user name implies.

- Angostura, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It's just a shame old jobbsy-boy made such a big deal of "this runs OS X" isn't it? I can run more apps on my RAZR than on my iPhone.
- Lyph5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0So simply use your RAZR. The iPhone never advertised 3rd party apps.
- joegibes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No, it's like buying a new Corvette and having Chevy lock the speedometer at 50 mph, and making sure you can't put new tires on it.

- csixty4, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0People seem to have forgotten that it comes with Safari, and that Apple released a version of Safari for Windows just so people could test their sites to get them working on it.
It's not like there's no way to run anything but Apple's stuff on it. You just can't run programs natively. Don't I keep reading that web apps are the future anyway?- HesNikke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+51995 called, they said that JAVA is the future!
- bigfloppydonkey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Wow. $600 dollars for a PS3 that I can't open up without voiding the warranty? There are plenty of other companys like this, not just Apple.
AT&T is probably the ones who are pressuring a lot of this. Apple still makes money for each iPhone bought, AT&T does not, iirc. They get it from the service.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -10/+4Really, I mean there were some Amiga apps and DX10 games I wanted to put on there but it just didn't work. What? - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Right, there's no money in hardware. And what has Apple's business model been almost since day 1? Sony's? Samsung? The list goes on and on with companies making quite a bit of money from hardware. Maybe someday they'll learnt.
- bumblefoot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13sorry to piss on the other repliers fires but learnt is actually a word its not a poor spelling mistake,
verb learned or UK ALSO learnt, learned or UK ALSO learnt
1 [I or T] to get knowledge or skill in a new subject or activity:
They learn Russian at school.
"Can you drive?" "I'm learning."
I've learned a lot about computers since I started work here.
[+ to infinitive] I'm learning to play the piano.

Why do some of you have the nerve to act surprised?
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Um. You probably never heard of Windows Mobile and its relatives... which in the past 7-8 years plus, Microsoft has handled very differently than Apple.

The PR release says nothing about 3rd party apps, only SIM unlocks. I only question Brian because he's known for being sensationalistic on Apple stories.

lol, zomg someone bought something that I don't like, that means they are stupeeed.
- felchdonkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8The press release says nothing about "all third-party apps," just unlocking. Still, who cares? For now, I can just restore to factory if I have a problem, and in the meantime, enjoy the great software coming from the dev community.
In a year or so, if Apple wants to keep fighting against the very people that support their success, then hopefully there will be a Google phone or something else that can give a better experience.
My Atari was great, but I didn't think twice about switching to Colecovision when it came out. Technology moves on, some things don't live up to their potential, you switch. Alternatively, one could make the argument that it is just desserts for anyone who makes their device more difficult to support. Most vendors I work with professionally have learned that when I come to them with an issue, it's likely a bug in their stuff. I will exhaustively test and document any anomalies encountered. This attitude, however, is lacking in the general cell phone user population.
That being said, if you make your device more difficult to support, why is it unfair for the manufacturer to cut you out of support, and everything, including warranty, it entails? We're not talking about something like, "Oops, you didn't use Ford brand air in your tires. You vehicle's warranty has been revoked." If third party software causes more data usage, it becomes more expensive for AT&T to keep feeding you. More data usage causes more battery usage. More battery usage causes your battery to die sooner. Apple, at this point, should be keenly aware of battery issues, and will do anything they can to slow their death.- ryangoff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"If third party software causes more data usage, it becomes more expensive for AT&T to keep feeding you. More data usage causes more battery usage. More battery usage causes your battery to die sooner."
I get what you're saying, but using your analogy again, it would be like Ford voiding your warranty if put better tires on your car because you had a longer commute. But, whatever. Cat and Mouse my friend ... Cat and Mouse...- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1That analogy only works if you say that you put different sized tires on your car and that caused damage. Then why would Ford honor your warranty?
- heystoopid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Very piss poor analogy indeed , try again , given that larger better tires with different aspect ratios have the same rolling radius as the standard OEM ones fitted to the Found On (the) Roadside Dead" machines anyway !
- heystoopid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nice speculation , please remove welding goggles before you leave the office , you may be able to see better !

- se1zure, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2it wouldn't make sense for them to replace the phone because there is no way in hell you can prove it wasn't the software that caused harm to it in the first place (okay, maybe you could, but it would involve opening the phone up, and therefore voiding the warranty.)
If they make it a closed platform, don't expect to be rewarded when you ignore them and hack it. - BambinosKrib, on 10/10/2007, -9/+8The iphone is the most overrated piece of hardware I've ever seen in my life. - pinchduck, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Why does this surprise you? Do you think that Apple will support you if you install RockBox on your iPod or Linux on your Macbook? It takes a special manufacturer to support a user base that will hack its products. Apple has never been that company, at least not since the Apple ][. If you want 3rd party apps up the wazoo, go with the Windows Mobile platform. It isn't great, but it is better than symbian, and MS and the phone manufacturers have installation programs designed to help you install their stuff. If you want the great user experience, go with the iPhone, but then you play by Apple's rules. You can't have it both ways, because Apple won't let you.
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2and by special company you mean nearly every company but apple right?

- drlha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8This sort of thing is hardly new. A while back I had a problem with the hard drive on my Desktop PC at work, which had Linux installed, so I called the manufacturer to get a replacement hard drive and the conversation went something like this: Me: My hard drive broke. Support: OK, I need you to run the XXX System Diagnostic Package for me, Me: I can't I have Linux on this machine. Support: OK no problem, do you have the disk that came with the machine? OK - insert that disk and reboot the machine, follow the prompts to re-install Windows. Me: Huh? But that will wipe all my data. Support: I'm sorry sir, I can't help you if you don't have the supported OS on the machine.
This is essentially what Apple are doing, so the answer is: re-install the unhacked OS on the iPhone before taking it in to report a problem. Seems like it would be the obvious first step in diagnosing if your problem is software or hardware based anyway wouldn't it?- jkoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm sorry, but reasonable intelligent comments like yours are not allowed in this thread. Please report the the anti-Apple processing center immediately for reprogramming.
- RetlawST, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0If your hard drive broke you're gonna need to backup anyway. Why not back up, reinstall Windows; all your data is safe and you've confirmed your hd was bad.
- heystoopid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Get the latest live Linux CD , since they run in memory only , that way you can recover or access the hard drive in question to recover all data if the drives on board IDE electronics are still functional !
If the drive is dead , reinstalling Windoze , will not solve the problem !
- sk1ll2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Didn't Apple say the same thing when people started installing Windows onto the Macbook Pro? Then they released Boot Camp (allowing Windows, but not supporting it).
I bet that Apple will release an SDK for the iPhone when the dust settles and the warranty terms will be similar. - Slikkster, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Maybe, just maybe people will finally wake up and see that Apple's "We control EVERYTHING" motto is at least as bad, if not worse, than any claims of Microsoft monopolies. This company is so ridiculous. Not to mention that it's the height of arrogance at the same time as insecurity that they would prevent people from making this a better product than it originally was.
Keep it up, Apple. Welcome to the MS world. Hey Google, you're next!- drlha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Perhaps you should read up on what MS actually did before making posts like this. You can start by looking up the phrase "Knife the baby" up on Google if you don't know where to start, and tell me if you think Apple has acted any way close to MS.
- Slikkster, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Are you really going to take the position that Apple's total control over its hardware and OS is anything but monopolistic? Come on, dude. Don't insult my intelligence. Get a clue. Microsoft has been slapped down for its practices, and deservedly so. But there's a new bully in town. And this one hasn't gotten its comeuppance...yet. The clock is ticking, though. No amount of fanboyism on your part is going to change that.

- sudowrestler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Microsoft aims to control an entire, huge industry. That's a monopolistic intent. Apple aims to control *its own products* within the industries it competes in. If that gets called "monopolistic," then every company is a monopoly and the word ceases to have any useful meaning.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Cool beans to that!
Yes I read the comment below. The problem is that too many people with a vested interest in another platform besides Apple's want to paint them with the same paintbrush even though Apple's computers aren't anything like a monopoly, the iTunes/iPod combination is currently the leader at I believe 70%, but that could change at any time (especially with Amazon now selling DRM-free MP3s), and the iPhone is currently at less than 1% of the market. So could anyone remind me what exactly Apple is a monopoly of again?
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Cool beans to that!

- pukufek, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14You agreed to the EULA when you bought the phone, deal with it.
For ***** sake what the ***** is wrong with you consumer whores? You're stupid enough to stand in line and beg Apple to take your money, your stupid enough to bend over backwards and agree to sign a couple thousand dollars to AT&T or O2, you know how phone providers work, you know how Apple works, dont turn around and act shocked.
Fact is, Apple doesnt need iPhone modders, they have their own software business, their own partnerships and their own game plan, most of their customers will be happy with this deal, if you are not, go somewhere else. If you want to mess around with your iPhone and write software for it yourself then great, best of luck to you but dont forget, Apple build the iPhone and Apple sells it on their terms.- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Nicely said. Don't buy an iPhone if you plan on changing it. Buy something else instead. It's not like you don't have plenty of choices out there. Hell, there's even a Windows Mobile hack that makes many phones almost act like the iPhone interface.
- munter1942, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5Is there anyone here with an iphone that doesn't like it? I'm betting that 90% the haters on here are the ones that can't afford one. The other 10% being anti-fanboys, which is even worse than being a fanboy. It's like "I don't have an iphone and i'm really jealous, so i'm gonna tell eveyone they suck, so it looks like i could afford one if i wanted, but chose not to buy one cos i'm so totally rad and this new technology doesn't impress me AT ALL". Don't like it? Don't support it.
When you have drones of sheep running out buying up iPhones everywhere, it makes them think they're doing something good when in reality, they aren't.
The reality is, you paid for the software, you can run whatever you want on it. Plus it's not like they'll know. What, is there some internal thing that can NEVER get reset that calls home to inform them that you installed some custom *****?- sudowrestler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Drones of sheep?" Calm down.

- Mordieu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1One way or the other, apple will finally comply with the developers community. I am sure apple has tested all these 3rd party apps, and is going to release them in future updates. As for the unlock, what is apple going to do about the euro folks, they can unlock there future iphone when ever they want, it's LEGAL, so apple will have to play by them too.
All this propaganda about bricking the moded iphones is full of crap. They are doing it just for AT&T...- heystoopid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Down under in OZ as well , or the ACCC will ream their ass under existing trade laws !
- DOGPARTY, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Come on Apple, don't be jerks, void the warranty is fair and if an update happens to cause problems thats fair, but bricking on purpose thats being a bit cruel
- lvirden, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I was pretty surprised to see people able to install their own apps on the iphone anyways. What typically happens is that once that door opens, the clueless start loading everything in sight onto their device, then it breaks because someone has either written a trojan or just poor software, then the people go running back to the vendor complaining their device doesn't work any longer.
- cloudyprison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Not surprising.
- TheFoolyCooly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The only time support is needed for an iPhone is when there's a hardware failure, or a password/code is lost. Apple's problem right now is they think they would have to provide "support" for user software. What Apple needs to do is provide full support for hardware, support for Apple software, and simply refuse support for "3rd party" software...
Apple will probably never acknowledge so called "3rd party" software, because if they do their current support model would overtax their support department. - spazzcat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Where does it say any software?...they are talking about unlocking software...and I read this changed the firmware on the modem part of the phone. I think using unapproved firmware will void any warranty on hardware you buy apple or not...
- TheFoolyCooly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Indeed, changing Firmware voids just about any warranty unless it's code released by the manufacturer, but that's not the real issue is it. The issue is Apple has been going to great lengths to not accommodate user software.
