- OneManArmy, on 10/10/2007, -7/+163Apple Support: Hello sir, how can we help you?
Customer: Well, I'm having trouble! All my icons are gone!
Apple Support: Gone? Well, what were you doing when they dissappeared?
Customer: I was just playing Mike Tyson's Punchout, and when I suspended my game after clocking King Hippo, I was thumb-scrolling Summerboard down to launch a quick game of PigShooter, when suddenly...
Apple Support: Hold on... did you just say that you're running non-standard software on your iPhone?
Customer: Um, yeah... and also, I forgot and fell asleep with iBrator running all night long yesterday, and its like the motor for the vibrator stopped working. Is there something I can do, or should I bring it to an Apple Store?
Apple Support: Dude? Let me give you some advice.... I'm taking a chance this isn't being recorded, but restore your iPhone, bring it to the Apple store, and just play dumb.
Customer: What? Why? Is there a problem?
Apple Support: Dude... we're SO not having this conversation
*ripped from gizmodo comments* - sholt, on 10/10/2007, -13/+103How is this different from the warranty being voided if you install Linux on you iPod?
You install unsupported software on your phone, you accept the risks. I don't care how easy the dev community makes it to install - Apple is under no obligation to support any problems caused by unsupported software.
If you have a real issue, you should have tried restoring the phone's software already, anyway. This is a non-issue. - WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -22/+98A big "***** you" right back at you, Apple! Requiring restoring before applying an update, I can understand. Voiding my warranty if 3rd party software is present, even for a completely unrelated failure? That's unacceptable. Apple is going to have to hurry up and release an SDK if they don't want to piss off all their customers for good...
- JasonCox, on 10/10/2007, -11/+80So can I now say 'F*** Apple' and not get dugg down?
No? Damn. - Riggor, on 10/10/2007, -13/+68And if Microsoft did this, you'd all be bitching about a police state...
- bigBadOwl, on 10/10/2007, -5/+44It's just scare mongering by Apple (Its the same tactic governments use to run their countries these days). Anyone who knows "the scene" will tell you that you just don't update - wait for a customised version of the update to become available. So relax and don't buy into the bullsh*t.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33The folks that hacked their iphone are the folks that read tech blogs are the folks that know to restore to factory settings before taking it in for repair
- misteral, on 10/10/2007, -4/+32>> Pretty ***** way to reward the programmers who made the iPhone better than stock.
Though it seems pretty *****, anyone who works in COMMERCIAL development should understand. Though Apple SHOULD have provided an SDK for 3rd party apps, the reality is they didn't. Supporting 3rd party apps would mean little to no API changes, leaving their hands tied if an API doesn't perform or needs changing. It also means developers working to support said API.
Does this mean Apple will never have an API? I'd like to believe that once the iphone is more stable that one will be introduced. - vladin, on 10/10/2007, -4/+27Don't brick me bro.... Don't brick me.
- tobsterius, on 10/10/2007, -6/+28You've said all I wanted to say, so I'm just gonna quote this part for emphasis:
"You install unsupported software on your phone, you accept the risks. I don't care how easy the dev community makes it to install - Apple is under no obligation to support any problems caused by unsupported software." - neurosport, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23microsoft would never make a computer that cannot run programs
ONLY APPLE CAN BE THIS DUMB - Mediaright, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19A couple things to bear in mind:
A: Brian's language is vague when he says "Apple confirmed to me", did they actually tell him, or did he just take this from the press release they made yesterday featured in the article. The PR release says nothing about 3rd party apps, only SIM unlocks. I only question Brian because he's known for being sensationalistic on Apple stories.
B: It's early days. People will figure out ways to do this safely and so that the hacks are undetectable over time. If you're smart and waiting for a 2G iPhone, who cares.
C: Oh, and god forbid anyone in this community ever do something so unholy as break a warranty. Being self-sufficient tech users, we know not the outcomes! - john570, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20Apple is NOT the new Microsoft. They have always been as aggressive as MS. Look at the facts.
- kkiran, on 10/10/2007, -14/+29Well, it(the press release) says - we SHOULD NOT modify our software but does it specify installing Apps? Remember Apple Someone said they don't care the 3 rd party apps but they won't support them.... They were referring to anySIM and iUnlock in the new PR.... Gizmo, pl don't frighten us,the lame users, please..
- realityiswhere, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Maybe he/she's Canadian and they don't support our network. Or a linux user, and they hate us. stop being a wad.
- avengingturnip, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Palm is probably feeling a little better about things now. They encourage the use of 3rd party apps on their platforms.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14You agreed to the EULA when you bought the phone, deal with it.
For ***** sake what the ***** is wrong with you consumer whores? You're stupid enough to stand in line and beg Apple to take your money, your stupid enough to bend over backwards and agree to sign a couple thousand dollars to AT&T or O2, you know how phone providers work, you know how Apple works, dont turn around and act shocked.
Fact is, Apple doesnt need iPhone modders, they have their own software business, their own partnerships and their own game plan, most of their customers will be happy with this deal, if you are not, go somewhere else. If you want to mess around with your iPhone and write software for it yourself then great, best of luck to you but dont forget, Apple build the iPhone and Apple sells it on their terms. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13sorry to piss on the other repliers fires but learnt is actually a word its not a poor spelling mistake,
verb learned or UK ALSO learnt, learned or UK ALSO learnt
1 [I or T] to get knowledge or skill in a new subject or activity:
They learn Russian at school.
"Can you drive?" "I'm learning."
I've learned a lot about computers since I started work here.
[+ to infinitive] I'm learning to play the piano.
[+ question word + to infinitive] First you'll learn (how) to use this machine.
so technically you guys need to learn how to spell ;)
have a nice day - edzilla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11So is pretty much every other smartphone manufacturer.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/faq/aboutsp ...
- adooga, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Affected.
Sorry, I'm sick and I need help. - Drahkar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13You made a comment so obviously you care enough to make an ass of yourself.
- Devrdander, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16Firefox doesn't modify the core OS like the unlocking utilities do, Also apple doesn't make a development frame work for iphones or encourage third parties to make programs for it. Your analogy is complete crap.
- yunus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10True, they just needed the popularity for anyone to notice. With the Iphone and Ipod they have it.
- adooga, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Well you'd know, you're their all time best seller! ;)
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10No, I guess he meant people waiting for a 2nd generation iPhone.
- webphreak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I think the point is that if you iPhone does break from some OTHER reason that you don't have a warranty. Because it's unlikely that most apps will ***** it... but just because you have some simple application that apple didn't make they can refuse to repair it for you. So if the touching part of the screen goes and you have custom apps they don't have to fix it. I find that a little rank? or maybe I'm misguided in the point of all this. Either way I don't care we don't have iPhones here (other than unlocked ones) in New Zealand anyway
- mmhnef, on 10/10/2007, -7/+16Makes sense. Apple dosn't wana replace the iphone of retards that install random crap on it, break something and cant figure out what they just did. Of course they will void the warrenty, otherwise they will be replacing everyons iphone.
- zydeco, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13News flash...you already bought the phone and locked into a two-year deal (well, most of you did). You might be "pissed off for good" but guess what? They have your money already. They never promised the phone would be open, did they?
All this whining and demanding that Apple release an SDK is getting really tiresome. Go get an OpenMoko and give it a rest. - adooga, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Sure, no problem.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -3/+11Unfortunately people will still continue to buy the iPhone SDK or not. The masses will flock to it soon enough, surely after a couple more price-drops and a new model or two. This is probably why AAPL haven't released it and won't, it will sell regardless.
- realityiswhere, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10"All I did was click this popup that said it would get rid of iPhone viruses. It said it would install a registry too to make it easier."
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13It's 400, and yeah, it is kick ass.
- Eldoo77, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12iAppleApologist
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8say that your iPhone wont turn, so you decide to get rid of all your devious 3rd party apps before you send it off...but, oh wait! it wont turn on?
see what I'm getting at? - realityiswhere, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8and no one cares about your opinion, that's why you're getting dugg down. Hopefully that's not too hard to follow.
- felchdonkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8The press release says nothing about "all third-party apps," just unlocking. Still, who cares? For now, I can just restore to factory if I have a problem, and in the meantime, enjoy the great software coming from the dev community.
In a year or so, if Apple wants to keep fighting against the very people that support their success, then hopefully there will be a Google phone or something else that can give a better experience.
My Atari was great, but I didn't think twice about switching to Colecovision when it came out. Technology moves on, some things don't live up to their potential, you switch. What's the big deal? - thylacine222, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Yeah? Well I slept with your wife.
- Mike89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Owned dude. Learn how to be a spelling nazi, seriously.
- dpknc84, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I don't know why you guys are digging Lyph5 down. "Learnt" is a correct spelling of "learned".
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/learnt - drlha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8This sort of thing is hardly new. A while back I had a problem with the hard drive on my Desktop PC at work, which had Linux installed, so I called the manufacturer to get a replacement hard drive and the conversation went something like this: Me: My hard drive broke. Support: OK, I need you to run the XXX System Diagnostic Package for me, Me: I can't I have Linux on this machine. Support: OK no problem, do you have the disk that came with the machine? OK - insert that disk and reboot the machine, follow the prompts to re-install Windows. Me: Huh? But that will wipe all my data. Support: I'm sorry sir, I can't help you if you don't have the supported OS on the machine.
This is essentially what Apple are doing, so the answer is: re-install the unhacked OS on the iPhone before taking it in to report a problem. Seems like it would be the obvious first step in diagnosing if your problem is software or hardware based anyway wouldn't it? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -20/+27Apple is the new Microsoft. Give them a few more years and they will be half the share price. They have played this game of exclusive hardware trick in 1980 with the Apple II and Macintosh and still haven't learnt. There is no money in hardware. Wake up Steve.
- Cattrin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Didnt' you hear? Caps locks is cruse control for cool!
/sarcasm, since so far every sarcastic comment I make still gets ill received. - bigfkncee, on 10/10/2007, -22/+29wow....$400-$600 on a phone and you cant put whatever software you want on it w/o a problem? Pretty sad.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7yes, and sony never screws over the consumer...
I'd be cautious when installing the phones cd, might get one of those nasty sony rootkits... - jkoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm sorry, but reasonable intelligent comments like yours are not allowed in this thread. Please report the the anti-Apple processing center immediately for reprogramming.
- adooga, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7So does everyone else. It doesn't make you special.
- adooga, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Dude, his wife's in a coma
- elyobelyob, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11Well, the more and more I read about the iPod touch and the iPhone .. the more I don't want one. Think I'm going to get a Nokia N800 and use Skype, bluetooth, 3rd party app, changeable batteries and removable storage.
