- crashingechelon, on 11/30/2008, -1/+62Pretty cool to see how far the stores become since this time. I found it funny how he mentioned they carried MP3 players so I know this has to be pre-2001.
- axelgrease, on 11/30/2008, -2/+50Dugg for the classic black turtleneck
- matters5, on 11/30/2008, -0/+37This is from 2001, FYI.
- alphabetagaga, on 12/01/2008, -2/+35The most interesting thing to see is how some of the core concepts have persisted - the place for kids, the division of home and pro products, the ability to get online from any computer, the third party device offered, the genius bar (of course)...whether or not you're an Apple fan, you have to give it to Apple for having a killer retail model.
- HookmasterCH47, on 11/30/2008, -0/+31So they had a Bat-Phone? Sweet.
- moisie, on 11/30/2008, -2/+28The stores have developed so much since then, but the core idea of how the stores operate is still miles ahead of what so many other companies do. It's amazing that they haven't been copied more.
- BoneStamp, on 11/30/2008, -4/+26Wow, they even LABELED the sections?
- matters5, on 11/30/2008, -0/+17I didn't realize the word flashback implies something is from 2001.
- Eminemdrdre00, on 12/01/2008, -1/+17Did I hear him say "You can do whatever you want on the internet" on any of the computers o_0
- ciano, on 12/01/2008, -1/+15Does anyone else really hate it when video players start you off with the volume turned down halfway? If I want it louder, I'll turn up my damn speakers.
- terryhuang, on 11/30/2008, -6/+18He was fat.
- sockpuppets, on 12/01/2008, -1/+12Did I just have a 3some? Because it's not at all like I thought it would be.
- omjeremy, on 12/01/2008, -4/+15Funny thing, he's still wearing the same clothes since then. Damn hipsters.
- LilBoyLuver, on 12/01/2008, -1/+11I would have loved to be one of those pioneers, first able to experience wireless internet while tethered to a power cord and a security cable.
- omjeremy, on 12/01/2008, -1/+10I think the name "Genius Bar" is incredibly silly.
- rypic7, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9i loved how he was like "you can just pick this up to see what it's really like to have wireless connection to the internet." as if you can't pick up a computer hooked up with cat5, and as if that little powercord/security cable wasn't attached.
- svensko, on 12/01/2008, -1/+10Pretty neat vid. I bet he had no idea Apple would have become what it is today at that point in time. (No, I do not use/own Apple products except for my iPod I got for free.)
- MorseMoose, on 12/01/2008, -0/+8Is that John Lennon and Yoko Ono in the huge picture in the background?
- sarchosis, on 12/01/2008, -1/+9Interesting that when they first opened their store they had every display computer connected to the internet whereas if you go to a Circuit City you probably won't find a single one.
- abdurraheem, on 12/01/2008, -1/+7unfortunately the tech support section would be useless considering you can install it on practically any manufacturers computer, whereas the genius bar at an apple store is more efficient relatively because they only have to deal with their own hardware.
- holygram, on 12/01/2008, -1/+7"Currently I work for Hollister"
Actually, I don't think I need to say anything... - mesomorphicman, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6it's almost sad to see how healthy ole Steve looked back then, his illness has changed him a lot physically - wish him good health and a long life.
as someone else said, interesting how he says, "mp3 players", this is obviously pre-iPod. do Apple stores still have the kids area? i've only been to the Apple store in SF and never went to the second floor, so I never saw a kids area before. it's genius way let kids play with APPL products to became fans, and get their parents to buy merchandise. - MScrip, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5Dugg for old-school Canon GL1 and Sony VX2000.
Get a $2500 camcorder with your Mac. - sockpuppets, on 12/01/2008, -5/+10correction: cancer causing turtleneck.
- DyceFreak, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5AS you see here on the ceiling
- thedowd, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4I'll bite on this.. if you have knowledge of Apple products and/or have previous retail experience, they will probably at least give you an interview. If you're reletively unfamiliar with the products and the OS, you probably won't stand a chance; but as it is approaching the holiday season, they do hire TONS of holiday temp help which could potentially turn into fulltime if you do well at that.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4"Tickles and *****." wtf?
- KSUdesigner, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4Exactly where would your revenue come from to pay your employees, rent and utilities?
- mattb5, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4I remember at the time they did this Gateway had just decided to close all of its stores. I thought this was a totally boneheaded move on Apple's part. My bad.
- cfeick, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4very cool
- daviddiaz, on 12/01/2008, -1/+5What are the requirements to work at an apple store? Currently I work for Hollister, but I've always thought that working at apple must be just about one of the coolest jobs at the mall.
- marshallpeck, on 12/01/2008, -1/+4I love you
- dsoldier, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3It's weird having worked in a store modeled exactly like this one because it has basically stayed the same since it opened. They only got rid of the huge projection screen and moved the Genius Bar last year. Goes to show they definitely put a lot of thought into the store design.
- darkfate, on 12/01/2008, -1/+4I always thought the Genius Bar was added later on, or was it only in a few stores and then they expanded? Sucks they don't put the phones in anymore. I've had a few friends that were frustrated when the "Genius" wasn't able to answer seemingly simple questions and told them they had to call AppleCare to get to a higher level (which can be a pain for a normal person).
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -1/+4I love you more
- SawButter, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Selling dancing penguin mascots ?
- Schmich, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Either I don't understand your complaint or you meant to say "If I want it lower, I'll turn down my damn speakers."
- eibiee, on 12/01/2008, -1/+4I love it how they cut short on the "great video games section".
- rypic7, on 12/01/2008, -2/+5bulge anyone?
- charleymot, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Oof, those jeans and that turtleneck....I mean, my GOD, take me now!
- KSUdesigner, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Unlikely. The first Apple stores were opened in Virginia and California.
- dsoldier, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Funny that you work at Hollister, because I worked there for a month some time before I got the job at the Apple Store. That job was complete ***** though, and I'm glad I got out of it.
Anyways, thedowd's comment hit the nail on the head. If you're at least a casual Mac user, and 18 years old, that's about all they need. That and at least some personality to be able to talk to people about the products in an upbeat manner. And they do hire a ton of people for the holiday season, but unfortunately for you that has already begun and I'm sure they've already hired for the holidays, considering black friday has already passed. - Stevethegreat, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Only an idiot would call Baldur's Gate (to be) a crappy title. Apart form that, yep not that much of variety.
- Raian, on 12/01/2008, -1/+3correction: mock turtleneck
- alieneggsac, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Those jeans are too tight if you ask me, frankly speaking.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Yes, a store split into 4 sections each section having something different must have required a LOT of thinking!
- crgnetworks, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Jobs is such a tool.
