- phishneslo, on 11/06/2008, -1/+35DELETE PRINTER DRIVERS to get 9/10 of the benefit of everything this article has to say. apps and widgets take up very little space, but the random printer drivers you will never use take up about 3 GB!!! If you don't have a printer on your laptop, print to PDF and email it, or find the drivers to the new printer you bought and download them. and them only. seriously, why does apple have to try to make osx work with ever printer ever created?
- Zippo, on 11/06/2008, -0/+20The same reason why Windows comes with a *****-ton of pre-installed drivers... to make installation faster.
Sometimes, you don't have a connection to the net, or the disc... so being able to plug in a printer and have it work just about right-away is a bonus. - computershack, on 11/06/2008, -4/+20" Leopard typically clocks in at over 8GB for a typical install." JESUS H CHRIST. And people complain about the size of a typical XP or Vista install? It's not even as if they need the amount of drivers Windows comes with.
- ctrlfreak13, on 11/06/2008, -2/+17You have to realize that there are a lot more apps included in the install that are not really integral to the operating system... a lot more than Windows (think about iLife). Also, as the article mentions, there's essentially two sets of a lot of the code: one for Intel and one for PowerPC, so there's a lot of extra code there.
- rdas7, on 11/06/2008, -0/+12When installing, choose Customize, then:
1.) uncheck printer drivers (OSX will detect and install the printer you have the next time you try and print)
2.) uncheck Languages (or just include the ones you'll use)
You'll also halve the install time. - MacParrot, on 11/06/2008, -4/+11Then why would you buy a Mac in the first place? Don't be an assclown.
- utnow, on 11/06/2008, -2/+9I'd prefer the option... put the drivers on the install DVD, but provide a check-box for "I will almost always have access to the internet and would prefer to save 3gig of disk space and just download the drivers that I'll need when I need them."
If you're working on a laptop or see yourself constantly changing printers and needing access to a million different configurations and not always having access to the intrawubs... then just waste the space and install it all. :) - SidewinderX2, on 11/06/2008, -4/+10i do believe Leopard now makes Vista look like an anorexic...
- Selch, on 11/06/2008, -1/+7I just did an install and that option is there. Just click the Customize button and uncheck the drivers you don't want installed. Seems the Epson drives take the most space too.
- vallver, on 11/06/2008, -1/+6Dugg for Lini
- TomKarpik, on 11/06/2008, -4/+86. Stay a virgin
- Steeple, on 11/06/2008, -2/+63) await viable software
- Elranzer, on 11/06/2008, -1/+4The typical HP printer driver is 23MB. Now picture them including ever HP printer model up to 2007 included in the OS.
- chkdg8, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3Xslimmer FTW! It shaved 3.5GB off of my OS.
- Elranzer, on 11/06/2008, -1/+4An OSX retail disc does not include iLife or non-Apple apps the way a Mac system restore disc might. To put it in another perspective... an OSX retail disc fits on a 4GB single-layer DVD-ROM, a restore disc has to go on one or two dual-layer DVD-ROMs.
- Elranzer, on 11/06/2008, -1/+4For the FireWire? Oh wait...
- MacParrot, on 11/06/2008, -1/+3Hopefully 10.6 will eliminate most of the PPC code to slim it down a bit. Also you can gain some HD space back by not installing all the different languages that OS X comes with and by not installing the X11 stuff
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -1/+3You have to use the hamster on the piano first.
- Elranzer, on 11/06/2008, -1/+3I miss the 12" PowerBook...
- freebasen, on 11/06/2008, -1/+3I'm not sure why you are being dugg down, because this is absolutely true.
- wwwluckyro, on 11/06/2008, -1/+3It's not free. Google it. There are many articles on this topic
One example: http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2008/07/01/myths-of- ... - AndrewWiggin, on 11/06/2008, -1/+3Most people that aren't techies don't care/aren't aware how much space they have or are using, but they DO want to be able to print without any hassle. Your mileage may vary.
I noticed that print drivers took up tons of space when I installed leopard for the first time, but I left them in there because space is cheap and I want to be able to print with my laptop at anyone's house/work. - AndrewWiggin, on 11/06/2008, -1/+3I thought typical Vista clocked in at around 8-10 gigs too? Standard home edition is the one I'm talking about.
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1Monolingual got me nearly 3 gigs free
- utnow, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1ditto @ freebasen....
- SurrealDream, on 11/06/2008, -1/+2Wow, very good article. I should point out I did google around for a few minutes without getting a clear answer. Thanks for that dude.
- antdude, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1I prefer http://windirstat.info/ ...
- baralo, on 11/06/2008, -1/+2I'm not sure of it's an Intel thing or a Leopard thing but there are 5 sleep modes available in the terminal.
- alphgeek, on 11/06/2008, -1/+2This article made me laugh. So Windows is a bloated OS? LOL!
Serious question though: Does Leopard work OK on older hardware such as they are describing? I don't think I'd install Vista on a machine with a 20 gig HD. What is the minimum RAM and processor requirements for Leopard? - freezerburn666, on 11/06/2008, -2/+3even when i installed tiger on a VM it was 8GB
- PabloMac, on 11/06/2008, -3/+4I have a six-year-old 12" PowerBook, too. It runs great with Leopard.
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1Its only 20 megs saved
- Branchex, on 11/06/2008, -1/+2I wish Mozilla would offer a Intel only version of Firefox like Opera does for their browser, that way the Power PC code would not need to be removed by the user.
- JackGrinnan, on 11/06/2008, -2/+3You're in luck, it doesn't.
- nebkiwi, on 11/06/2008, -1/+1@Elranzer, My retail disc comes in at 7gb? original 10.5 retail disc.. to fit it on a SL DVD I had to make an image of the dvd, take printers, xcode tools, languages and extra software out and then burn to disc.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -1/+1the computer only goes into safe sleep mode if it knows it's about to run out of power.
it writes the contents of the RAM to a file, so if it runs out of power, it can recover everything. - bigkevheck, on 11/06/2008, -5/+5Why did you have to install Linux 5 times?
Or is that 5 crappy Lini and 1 good one? - R1100S, on 11/06/2008, -8/+8Just swapped out the 60gb HD in my 12" Powerbook G4 last week for a 250gb HD.
I'll need a new machine before I fill this one up.
Surprised I haven't dropped it in 5 years. Two new batteries, an AC charger, 1g of Ram, Leopard OS, and a 250gb HD have keep this aging machine running amazingly well! - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -1/+1How about you visit the apple website yourself? Its not a secret.
- wwwluckyro, on 11/06/2008, -1/+1There are intel optimised builds made by fans..
- flickr, on 11/06/2008, -2/+2I hear installing Windows 7 will actually triple your drive capacity and processor speed!
- LortGob, on 11/09/2008, -0/+0Best app mentioned in the article IMO. One button and you're freeing up diskspace you never knew you had!
- TerrapinRangler, on 11/06/2008, -5/+5If you are a PC person and want a free app that is similar to the treemap in this article, use SequoiaView. http://w3.win.tue.nl/nl/onderzoek/onderzoek_inform ...
- Zippo, on 11/06/2008, -1/+1I just wish Apple would allow for an Intel-only or PowerPC-only install, instead of everything being Universal Binary by default. I don't want, nor need anything PowerPC on my Macbook Pro.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/06/2008, -2/+13Gb for drivers? Holy *****, man... aren't typical drivers typically only a few Mb, at most?
- Urkel, on 11/06/2008, -5/+4Two Steps to Make It So Slimming Mac OS X Unimportant on Your Macbook:
1) Remove outdated 160GB factory installed HDD
2) Replace with $99 320GB Notebook Hard Drive - artfuldodga, on 11/06/2008, -6/+5i do love my 5+GB vista ultimate install including third party apps =] ... looking forward, windows7 with a little tweaking should require even less.
- shaughn13, on 11/06/2008, -3/+2exactly. for us technical minded people we don't want all that extra bloat but we are not the mainstream "dumb" user that if it does not work straight out of the box then they assume it doesn't work and want to take it back to the store.
- nicc, on 11/06/2008, -2/+1is the "safe sleep" mentioned in the article a intel only service? all of my macs are ppc.
I have never heard of, or seen, any mac taking 1+ minutes to go to sleep...it goes to sleep and wakes from sleep instantly (the system is up before I can get the screen all the way open!) - bigbangbuddha, on 11/06/2008, -2/+1Linux works this way by default for what its worth. I'm still playing with the latest Ubuntu though, not sure if I like it or not, jurys out. It runs fine, it has everything I need built in, but so does Windows & Mac. So I have all 3 on my laptop at the moment, and since its free its no real issue.
