But it's still a great device. - lordtyros, on 10/28/2007, -12/+62I'd be pissed beyond belief if my mp3 player were prone to crashing while performing its primary function. Note: Don't pack on extra ***** at the expense of core functionality.
- jmeskimen, on 10/31/2007, -4/+35802.1x support!!! I bought mine thinking that it would be perfect for college to have wifi and music everywhere on campus. Now it's restricted to being like my 5G iPod since I can't sign into the campus wireless without a username/password combo.
- 68024, on 10/24/2007, -1/+23...and thus also iPod Touch disappointments
- kjk437, on 10/27/2007, -5/+26I own a touch, and for the most part, I agree with the complaints about crashing. Granted, it's a new device, but bugs as severe as those should have been worked out. There are a couple of points on which I disagree, however:
1.) Backtracking through the UI has never been an issue. The writer doesn't explicitly state what problems he's having, but most (if not all) menus are just a couple of subsections deep. They also have convenient buttons on the top of the screen to navigate. I don't see this as an issue.
4.) I agree, terrible out of box, but that's what jailbreaking is for. ;)
5.) While I'd like to see a higher capacity, it was absolutely imperative for Apple to install flash memory for the lack of moving parts and battery consumption. The device sucks power as it is with wifi enabled and music playing, a hard drive would only have compounded the issue.
What's interesting is that several of the more valid complaints are missing from this list. External volume buttons has been mentioned, but that was just silly not to include. No flash support is a big minus. Tower defense would be oh so nice in Math 209 some days. ;) Another big issue is the chrome back. The iPhone's was fine. Now I have a scratchy mess from nothing but normal use.
Is the touch perfect? Absolutely not, but it has great potential and is an extremely solid device already.
Plus, everyone loves a good jailbreak... I'm so glad I did that, at the very least. - ctony, on 10/28/2007, -9/+29Can people ever stop complaining. This is a brilliant device. You tell me how many music players you know that they have touchscreen, wi-fi, browser, video and they look as small thin and cool as the touch. My god everybody wants this and wants that. Some years ago you had an 8gb brick that played music in b&w screen and everybody was wow. What I am saying people were probably complaining then too. We so called tech people remind me of football fans, you score and you are the god and if you miss 5 mins later you are a looser.
Take it easy. It's a device and it does much more than it should do. - ub3rgeek, on 10/24/2007, -3/+21You just answered your own question.
And for bluetooth internet from your cell phone. - inactive, on 10/24/2007, -0/+18Or, just put a volume button on the outside like on the iPhone.
- markwilcox, on 10/24/2007, -2/+19Yeah the volume thing is annoying. Every time you want to change the volume you've gotta pull it out of your pocket, double tap home, then slide.
With my old video I always used to just put my hand in my pocket and change the volume. - kjk437, on 10/24/2007, -3/+20Why can't people just enjoy products from all companies... I use my Apple iPod touch with Shure headphones on my Dell laptop running Microsoft Vista... I'm happy with all 4 companies for their respective products...

- samgab, on 10/27/2007, -3/+18For "Digg compliance" shouldn't this title read: "Top Five reasons why the iPod Touch disappoints" ?
- firstpost, on 10/24/2007, -0/+15because a powerbook would do all those things?
- ttfadia, on 10/24/2007, -0/+14Here are my disappointments:
1. Application state preservation – There does not seem to be any universal standard for state preservation in applications when a user returns to the home screen. In YouTube or Photos, a click of the home screen means you’ll start from the beginning when you reselect it. For Music and Safari, the application remembers your status.
2. Touch alternative to main button – The touch interaction becomes so natural that it can be a bit disconcerting to switch to the tactile button when returning to the home screen. It would be nice to have a touch alternative to the home button always showing somewhere.
3. Excessive animation – I hate saying this because the effects are so smooth, but sometimes the animations can be a bit disconcerting. For example, if I click a link in Mail, the Mail app zooms out, then Safari zooms in, then the current Safari page zooms out to display the “tab” navigator, then a new tab slides open and zooms in before the clicked link starts loading. The animations are lovely, but I have to wonder if simpler switch with a “Back to Message” button would be easier.
4. Application crash notification – Currently, when an application crashes on the iTouch (most frequently, Safari, when it encounters a resource-intensive page), the device just returns to the home screen and says “nope, nothing out of the ordinary happened there” (well, maybe not the second part). It would be helpful if the iPhone/iTouch would somehow acknowledge that the application had indeed crashed.
5. Easier “Breadcrumb” navigation – The current breadcrumb navigation design on the iPhone/iTouch only allows the user to move one level at a time. However, I usually have at least a couple nested folders in my Safari bookmarks and it can be a bit cumbersome to step back through each level. A more breadcrumb-like navigation system that listed the full path to the user’s current level would make this easier. Something akin to what is done on Leaflets would be ideal. - LoopyChew, on 10/24/2007, -0/+14Well, yeah, but I was thinking of something that can be implemented through firmware on current iTouches.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+13I think it is referred to as WEP/WPA Enterprise security. It requires additional credentials to login, not just a simple password. Additional credentials allow the use of a username, which is why it is very common in workplace environments and Universities. This is THE reason I did not get the iPod Touch, would have loved one but if I can only use wireless when I am at home, what's the point? (In Australia there are little to no free wireless hot spots, even at Cafes).
- brucebeh, on 10/24/2007, -6/+19WIRELESS MUSIC SYNCHRONIZATION!!!!!! Please apple!!!
- LoopyChew, on 10/24/2007, -2/+15You know what would be awesome? If they used pinching to change the volume controls. Double-tap home, spread for louder and pinch for softer.
I would assume that someone's already thought of this and figured out a reason why it's not a good idea, but it just seems like the logical thing to do for hand-in-pocket volume changing. - markwilcox, on 10/23/2007, -7/+19Those would be iPhone disappointments
- Murdats, on 10/23/2007, -0/+11bluetooth headphones
bluetooth file transfer
bluetooth contact sync
and anything else people want to use bluetooth for. - robphillips, on 10/24/2007, -4/+15Is anyone else pissed that the iPod Touch, and iPhone's iPod does not have a "lyrics" section or extensive ID3 tag readouts?
- kotatsu, on 10/23/2007, -2/+13My personal biggest gripe is how it will always lock itself out after a few minutes, meaning you have to double click home, or use the slide unlock just to pause your music... Pretty cumbersome.
The only alternative is to completely turn off the lock, which leaves the screen with backlight permanently turned on. - jmeskimen, on 10/24/2007, -1/+12It's more like instead of entering a WEP key, the network is set up so that you enter a username and password. And so only approved usernames and passwords are able to gain access to the network. It is not a web page based login.
- coldfusion1970, on 10/25/2007, -4/+15My touch has never crashed playing music, just in Safari.
- Munkym, on 10/23/2007, -1/+11Same... stupid Cisco Clean Access Agent. Is there any hack or application you can add (or someone can make) to bypass that?
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/24/2007, -3/+13Agreed. The diggsters have a one track mind sometime. Apple, XBOX 360, Democrats! ***** Sony, ***** Bush! Nobody else may have an opinion!
- r3zonance, on 10/23/2007, -0/+9Ever since hacking and installing 3rd party apps on my iPod Touch it has had random crashes and lock ups. Never had any problems with it as a vanilla ipod touch though.
But hey everyone knows that 3rd party software doesn't cause this (that's the impression you get from Digg users anyway). - thatsmyaibo, on 10/24/2007, -5/+14I've had no crashes whatsoever.
- eadnams, on 10/23/2007, -0/+9a P2 card is equal to 4 ultra extreme III's in a Raid 0 configuration inside a PC-Card, Its the only way to write fast enough, his prices are correct.
- ThinkBox, on 10/24/2007, -8/+16Go back just two years and look at the price of a 16gb Flash drive.
Flash is coming, but it isnt here in 32/64 yet.
Hell a 16gb P2 card for the panasonic HVX HD camera is still 1200, the 8gb is 800.... - coldfusion1970, on 10/24/2007, -2/+10The cut and paste is a big miss.
Also some sort of facility to store frequently entered text. - REBELinBLUE, on 10/24/2007, -0/+7Yeah I'm annoyed that they've removed things that the lower end iPods have, namely lyrics, playlists as alarms and playlist folders (latest models only)/
- jivemasta, on 10/24/2007, -3/+10Why is wifi sync such a big deal? How hard is it to plug something in. If you are close enough to do a wifi sync, you are close enough to get your lazy ass up and plug it in. Besides, it's gonna kill battery life like none other.
- vh1`, on 10/23/2007, -1/+8"12) NB: Not really an iPod issue: I can access my Gmail, but I have to type my password into that crappy keyboard. If I want it to remember my password, I need to either a)Leave my email accessible by anyone tha picks it up, or b)Use the iPod security and enter a passcode whenever I want to listen to a song."
how is anyone supposed to help with this? - seraph582, on 10/23/2007, -0/+7
Five iPod Touch Disappointments
ipod touch slide to wake
After playing with the iPod touch for just under a month now, along with some positive things I've discovered about the device, I've also come across a few things which bug me to no end. Lets take a look.
1. Backtracking Through The UI Is Difficult
The new UI of the iPod touch is truly amazing. Every little detail has had immaculate attention paid to, however the new user interface is causing a few hiccups when I'm trying to back track through screens. Simply put, there's no "simple" way to get back to a particular screen on the iPod touch unless you head straight back to the main menu - it feels like you have to dig your way out of a large hole to get back to where you want to go.
Then has been made easier by the new feature allowing you to double tap on the home button to bring up player controls, but it hasn't totally eliminated the problems.
2. Frequent Safari Crashes
This is one of the most frustrating things I've had to put up with, the frequency of Safari crashes. I've often found myself browsing the web when the browser closes and takes me back to the home screen.
I've noticed a trend of more frequent crashes happening on image heavy web-pages, however it's also happened while entering text in fields on forums/blogs - frustrating having to type out again.
3. iPod Is Frequent To Crash
Along with frequent Safari crashes, on occasion I've also had to put up with the iPod touch crashing while scrolling through music - sending me back to the home screen. This happens very frequently when I'm in the shuffle songs mode in a large playlist. It's annoying to say the least.
4. Lack Of Data Input Capabilities
As mentioned in a recent article, with the iPod touch you’re restricted to just browsing the web and adding contacts. With the iPhone, you're able to take notes, add contacts, write emails, browse the web, and add calendar events. In a perfect world, I’d like to have seen both the Notes and Mail applications included on the iPod touch.
I'm hoping the lack of these features will be smoothed over in future Apple software updates.
5. Storage Limitations
Although I've overcome this issue by creating some great smart playlists, the storage limitation of the iPod touch is something we're still having to deal with. Next year the issue will start to fade away as 32 and 64GB SSD drives are cheaper for Apple to use in their products - for now, 8 and 16GB doesn't quite cut it for most. - themuffinman, on 10/24/2007, -0/+6Well, that and it is the best-looking and has the best UI out of pretty much all mp3 players. Regardless of what you think, this actually counts for a lot of people. Note: I won't be buying a touch until they get the storage over 30 gb.
- ximon, on 10/24/2007, -1/+7- No integrated speaker - seems a shame to have such a (relatively) big screen and not be able to share it.
- No email etc. - I understand taking out the phone-related apps, but email, weather etc would still work over wifi (luckily there's the jailbreak).
- No hardware volume controls - can't be fixed by a software update, but an earlier poster's idea of pinching to change the volume is genius and would allow for in-pocket action.
- 'Open in new tab' would be nice in Safari, I have a javascript for this but it's a bit clunky, I'm sure there's a more elegant way to accomplish this. - xero9, on 10/24/2007, -0/+6Double click home and tap pause.. No need to slide to unlock.
All this depends on you using 1.1.1 though.
Also, unplugging and then replugging in headphones will automatically pause, if you wanted to go down that road - lastinginfinity, on 10/23/2007, -0/+5P2, not SDHC, check eadnams reply above
- rivalius13, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5You forgot Ron Paul. Sorry, Dr. Paul.
- mic159, on 10/23/2007, -4/+9so basically u want apple to copy the zune? LOL
- motheroats, on 10/23/2007, -7/+12I HATE THE CHROME BACK!!!!!!
- seraph582, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5what the hell are you talking about? Flash memory prices are going through the floor...
- REBELinBLUE, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5Sadly that doesn't work, if you plug it in you just get a message saying something along the lines of "the attached accessory is not supported by the iPod"
- shortyjacobs, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5You are completely delusional if you think the iTouch is a "mp3 player".....the whole POINT of the stupid device is to have all that extra ***** packed in. We used to have mp3 players that didn't have all the extra *****....no "touch to change volume crap".....it was called the iPod....and ya'll bitched and wanted a touch screen.....happy now???
- orph3us, on 10/24/2007, -4/+8is that where you have to login via web page? I thought safari worked for that? I don't own the touch or iphone, can you explain what is going wrong?
- indyGuy, on 10/23/2007, -0/+4The touch is my first ipod, and I love it. Multi-touch and wifi were the two features that made this a must have for me. I have no history with the product line and things like "no external volume control" and "lack of flash support" don't bother me one bit.
I have thought of a few features I'd like to have - things that my 3-year old crappy FREE phone has - but I keep reminding myself that I bought this to listen to music, play videos, and read TEXT on the web (gmail, news, digg).
Yes, iTunes is clunky on windows, no I haven't seen my touch crash. And, no, I don't think apple screwed me. I knew what features the touch had when I bought it and I don't expect more out of it. - mrsteveman1, on 10/24/2007, -1/+5"The longer it goes without a full reboot, the more buggy it seems to get over time. It really is a solid device"
I think you should look into this contradiction problem you have - r3zonance, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4But if you attach cables, you gain power, rather than sapping it dry with a (slower) wireless connection.
