Background processing for radio apps at least. - michaelpinto, on 06/24/2009, -24/+816. Flash Player 10 (which is coming to Android)
- MxM111, on 06/24/2009, -5/+49Does anyone realize that true HD resolution 1920×1080 (which most computer LCD monitors do not support, BTW) is only 2mp? Why people want 5mp? Do they want to be able print photo in journals taken by phone camera?!! Guess what? The optics of that tiny lens that can be put into a phone can justify even 3mp! (unless of course you want a phone with really large lens, which makes the phone itself large and less continent to use)
Number of megapixels is the biggest scam, ESPECIALLY in phones. - hangman16, on 06/24/2009, -4/+46What is this stupid debate about megapixels? Everyone thinks 'megapixels' are the only thing that defines image quality when it comes to a digital camera. "Oh this Kodak Easyshare is 12 megapixels, it must be MUCH better than this old 8 megapixel Canon Digital Rebel" Big pet peeve of mine.
I could care less how many megapixels a cell phone has. The 2mm lens is the constraint here - it doesn't let in much light to take a good picture. It could be 5,000 megapixels and the images will look the same as they do now at a standard web viewing size. If you want a better cell phone camera you need to start using larger lenses.
Oh and you can keep your crappy ass LED flash too. Everyone just loves the way they look when a pure white light illuminates their face making them looks like a pale ghost. /s Not to mention the fact it's not bright enough to be useful more than like 4 feet away from the subject. - nato0519, on 06/24/2009, -45/+86The phone's been out for less than a week and you already want to bitch and complain about it. No matter what the phone is the best thing on the market today. Pre and Blackberry can go suck a fat one. Who really cares about flash on the iphone anyways are you losers that addicted to Pogo? And the camera needing to be 5mp?! How many of you out there are really turning your iphone pics into 16X20 frames? 90% of the time it's just getting uploaded to YouTwitFace anyways. If you want a real digital camera spend a bucks and go buy one. Go find something better to do with your time than complain about some stupid bs. I got the 3gs on launch and I have no problems with it. I think considering the price there isn't a phone on the market that can provide these features the way the iphone does.
- mohsenxp, on 06/24/2009, -0/+37Here's the only reason why anything that you want that's not there is not there:
iPhone 4th Generation.
And next year here's the reason why some things you wanted are still not there...
iPhone 5th Generation
You can see where I'm going with this. - morningmatters, on 06/24/2009, -3/+38The article does make a good point about the ability to drag and drop files from the phone to my PC. Right now I can drag pictures from the phone onto my PC but that's about it. To move around mp3s I need to use iTune.
I not sure how a better camera is "critical" to any cellphone though. Plus, judging quality of cameras by megapixels is just plain dumb.
IMO the biggest weakness of the iPhone isn't really the phone itself but AT&T. - stubear, on 06/24/2009, -3/+24I'll bitch and complain and you'll f'ing like it. One HUGE shortcoming I noticed this morning was the inability to organize my contacts into groups on the iPhone. How f'ing hard would it to be to add a UI similar to the bookmarks in Safari that would allow me to move contacts into groups and let me create new groups like you can create new bookmark folders? Sure, the iPhone is very nice and I like mine (first time iPhone buyer/user here) but let's be honest, Apple has left out core functionality in this phone from the start, all for no apparent good reason.
- lapiak, on 06/24/2009, -1/+20If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Google Maps use Javascript, not Flash?
- Ellipsys, on 06/24/2009, -2/+201. Mass Storage Connectivity
This is my number one problem with the iPhone. I have no desire to use iTunes. Ever. I would be more than happy for that bloated, buggy piece of software to vanish off the internet. I do not wish to have to install iTunes just to copy some media. Most non-Apple brand media players are capable of this. You copy and paste your songs, to the songs area. You paste your movies, to the movies folder. I'd like to be able to sync with any media player of my choosing be it Winamp, MediaMonkey, AmaroK, without having to restort to half-supported reverse engineered hacks to do something as simple as transfer an MP3. This impacts me on a daily basis, and will be a chief reason why I'm going to purchase an Android phone ASAP.
To add my own request, why is it impossible for Apple to support free and open source codecs? They've already paid for AAC and MP3 implementations. OGG and FLAC (in which I have many of my music files coded) are free in every sense of the word. It won't cost them a dime. How about Xvid and MKV files? I'd love to be able to just play on my device with the right filters without having to encode it into something Apple likes.
I'm through with The Apple Way(tm). - blorc, on 06/24/2009, -1/+18Good suggestions overall. I love the 3GS. it's such a huge improvement in speed, and the extra features aren't bad either, but some of these suggestions would also be welcome changes.
I think the megapixels of the camera is the weakest suggestion as it's totally unecessary for what 99% of iPhone photos are used for, but improvements to the lens would be excellent. Also, a timer for pictures (like Photo Booth) would solve the virtual shutter issue described in the article.
One small thing I wish would change is being able to change the calendar type of an existing calendar. I hate that once I've created an entry I have to delete and recreate the entire entry if I accidentally submit it as a "Home" calendar instead of a "Work" calendar. - borez, on 06/24/2009, -3/+20Bacon griddle.
- CLShortFuse, on 06/24/2009, -7/+24The fact you guys don't demand more from Apple is sad. There's a reason why Apple gets away not putting simple things. (2 years for copy paste and psuedo-multitasking?)
What's with this apologist attitude? - TexMexRex, on 06/24/2009, -1/+17Macworld is a magazine. Nobody Reads it.
- SergeiGolos, on 06/24/2009, -0/+16Agreed. the push notification is great for almost all cases, except pandora like apps
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -3/+19Hey Macworld, you should look into this new coding platform called "Flash". I hear it's the next big thing.
- nogami, on 06/24/2009, -1/+16How about bluetooth support for voice command? There is none...
- Tyrghast, on 06/24/2009, -3/+17A reasonably priced service plan.
- ousthouse, on 06/24/2009, -6/+19I complain about cell phone contracts and prices, but reading these complaints makes me realize just how cool these phones are.
Biggest complaints:
My phone isn't as good of a desktop computer as my desktop computer is.
My phone isn't as good of a camera as my camera is.
etc... - inactive, on 06/24/2009, -19/+32TL:DR. Iphone fanboy cries about other people criticizing something he owns.
- removesstains, on 06/24/2009, -4/+17ut oh don't want to get the iPhone soldiers angry.
- justhim, on 06/24/2009, -0/+11The application syncing tab needs a ton of improvement. I for one would like to organize my iPhone screens in iTunes. It *should* have screens similar to the iPhone and a bar at the bottom similar to dashboard to drag and drop apps to sync as well as where you want them on the phone's home screens.
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -0/+11Those features aren't missing from the iPhone. They're missing from AT&T's network. Those of us in other areas of the world already enjoy those features =)
- svensksvamp, on 06/24/2009, -2/+13http://pleasefixtheiphone.com
end of discussion - InorganicMatter, on 06/24/2009, -1/+11Scratch both items from the list, as there's apps built right into the phone for those. Here's the REAL reasons Digg is clamoring for flash on the iPhone:
1. YouPorn
2. RedTube - golgotha, on 06/24/2009, -0/+9I don't understand.
What is the point of putting a 10 megapixel camera on a $2 lens??? - ihaterobots, on 06/24/2009, -3/+11Java support is NOT missing. Missing implies we would want it. Be thankful it's not there eating resources and slowing everything down. If I wanted Java I would go buy a Nokia.
I'm with you on the mem card and the multi-tasking though. - kotatsu, on 06/24/2009, -2/+10Asking for more megapixels in the camera is beyond retarded. All you would get with such a microscopic sensor and lens is more grain. 3 mega pixels is already far more than you need for such low quality optics. Apple need to size up the lens and sensor instead.
- TrancePhreak, on 06/24/2009, -21/+29Pretty good article... Still some extras not on the list:
memory card slot, real multi-tasking, flash, java, lighter weight OS - inactive, on 06/24/2009, -2/+9Removable battery.
- Charlotte_Web, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7Two reasons Apple opposes Flash: 1)it would allow developers to do an end-run around the App Store, and 2) it acts as a universal video wrapper, marginalizing the QuickTime plugin.
- kamakazitp, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7Word.
The problem is the general consumer wants one performance stat that they can use and the single most important measuring stick for a piece of equipment. They don't want to have to qualify multiple specs, features, etc.
2 or 3 mega pixels for the the iPhone camera is FINE, just make the lens suck less. It just needs to be able to replace point-and-shoot camera types. I don't need my iPhone taking 9MP pictures if they still look like ass at 800x600. - rimantas, on 06/24/2009, -3/+10Yeah, right. Why not 8 or 12 mpx camera?
Do you even know, what those mpx give to you (hint: in most cases nothing good). - Raptor007, on 06/24/2009, -1/+8As a jailbroken iPhone user with Backgrounder, I know the "background apps kill your battery life" argument is 99% BS. The only backgrounded app that did drain my battery quickly was Loopt (which polls the GPS quite frequently). I keep AIM, Safari, and Notes in the background, and haven't noticed any decrease in battery life.
- bobbarkerbilly, on 06/24/2009, -1/+8You are the reason we can't have anything good.
- hangman16, on 06/24/2009, -2/+8it has copy and paste now
- Lunarparcel, on 06/24/2009, -3/+9I've got a Canon S110 ELPH digital camera that I bought in 2002. Geez! What a freakin' joke. I would have thought by now, 7 YEARS LATER, that they would have put an easily downloadable firmware update that would turn the little 1.5 inch screen into a touch sensitive interface that allows me to play music and surf the internet....BUT NOOOOOOO, it just takes pictures. I can't even use this freakin' thing to make phone calls...WHATEVER!
/s
Long>short.....quitchabitchin'
Convergence is an ongoing process and involves some negotiation and sacrifice. But it's getting better.
For now:
You want better photos? Get a camera.
You want better internetz? Get a netbook.
Some of the other things the article complained about? Hey...there's an app for that...or soon will be. - TypeEE, on 06/24/2009, -1/+7Other than the 3MP camera, none of the problem is iPhone 3Gs related. One is an iTune problem, some are iPhone OS 3.0 limitation. They are software problem that Apple could fixed one day when you wake up w/ iTune update or Firmware update
- archer75, on 06/24/2009, -1/+6How about flash support?
- gbarger, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5I'd rather not have huge MP on a sensor that size. What most people don't realize just by looking at the numbers is the more capacity you have on a smaller chip means less space between CCD or CMOS sensors and more light leakage and grainier pictures. I'd rather have a 3mp picture that's sharp than a 5mp that's grainy. On a device that small it's difficult to get any better than 3. Even on the small handheld cameras at this point, going over 5mp means higher grain. If you're really serious about a high res picture get a DSLR....on the other side of that though, an LED doesn't take much space, and would be nice for lower light snapshots.
- molotovcat, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5We get it, you don't like the fact that Apple targets the average consumer that has no need for what you're suggesting.
Of course Apple will use their own proprietary tech but be reluctant to use others. No company would willingly put themselves in such a situation when the result generally means a worse experience for consumers. Flash can be used well but most of the time it is poorly used since nearly everything it does can be accomplished with Javascript which is FAR quicker and non-proprietary. Despite your bashing of the browser, mobile Safari is renders web pages more accurately than any other mobile browser.
Whether you want to accept the fact or not, allowing apps to run in the background on a mobile device is rarely a good idea when you can attain both benefits without doing so. Push allows developers to add the same functionality that running an app in the background would in terms of real-time updates. The other benefit being the ability for you to pick up where you left off. Either you are ignorant of the iPhones capabilities or you are choosing to ignore them, but developers have the option to keep the current state of the app in their DB. For example, when I leave Google Maps, I return and the app is in the same state so I can pick up the app where I left it. This is true for ALL Apple apps and most well written third party apps.
How does the number of pixels change the fact that capacitive is superior to resistive? You must have a poor grasp of technology if you think that higher resolution has to coincide with smaller text. The display is likely to stay the same physical size. If they have a display with higher resolution, that wont mean the text is unreadable and unable to be selected.
Yes, resistive has the benefit of being cheaper, that's why it's still a common touch tech, but this is a device that is very reliant on being able to accurately interact with the device without a stylus. Durability is also a large concern when dealing with mobile devices.
As far as comparing the Macbook Air's design philosophy to that of the iPhone, I'm not really following. Thinness of a laptop has little effect on its portability. No matter how thin it is, you will still carry it the same way you do any laptop. The iPhone on the other hand, is thin enough to very comfortably fit in your pocket. Look at how popular the Razr became when it was released. It had inferior tech but it was realized that consumers want THIN phones that they can comfortably carry. Not everyone carries a purse or bag with them at all times.
The iPhone has a huge market share and its users seem to be very happy with it. I'm not sure why this bothers you so much. No device fits all needs. - umdigger, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5Soon enough. Your phone will eventually be your computer, and your camera, and your GPS etc.. Just a matter of time. They've already replaced the wrist watch and date book.
- stuffradio, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5MMS and Tethering? Oh wait... I already have those without jailbreaking on my Canadian carrier!
- insertAliasHere, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5Oh, what insights will your interest in science and programming bring us next?
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5Actually, flash IS a coding platform, and the "next big thing" part was sarcasm. I was making a tongue-in-cheek comment about the fact that flash is a very popular form of media presentation (Hulu, NBC.com, ABC.com, Comedycentral.com, most video sites, as it is a lightweight coding system) on the internet, but it not supported by the iPhone.
Get it now? - Charlotte_Web, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4On the contrary; Flash is IDEALLY suited to touchscreen interfaces. I use Flash to build touchscreen kiosks, and it works wonderfully.
- NeoTechni, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Sorry if I double posted, digg isnt saying I posted at all
