http://www.pcworld.com/printable/article/id,146896 ... - celkin, on 06/10/2008, -6/+956. Being tied to an expensive two-year contract builds character!
/s - PopcornArsonist, on 06/10/2008, -20/+107The lack of a built-in toaster is the deal breaker for me.
WHY APPLE? WHY MUST YOU CONTINUE TO LET DOWN OUR UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS? - thinboyslim, on 06/10/2008, -54/+133No MMS, no 3G video calling, no avi divx xvid codec support, no video recording, only 2mp camera, plastic exterior, no bluetooth audio support. This is a 5 year old phone with a face lift, for such an "innovative" company Apple sure messed this up!
- whoreable, on 06/10/2008, -21/+68The camera still blows. 2 mega pixels wtf. I mean how else are you going to get clear pictures of your friends in compromising situations?
- greytfriend, on 06/10/2008, -2/+41It seems like it's mostly about speed and battery life, other than software improvements. As for the price, as MSaleem has pointed out, with the extra $10 per month AT&T is requiring, there is actually a price increase, just a transfer of where and when the money goes. If I were using it for business, it would make a lot of sense to get the new one. Since I'm pretty rooted near my wifi and charger, can't justify it.
- happyseamonster, on 06/10/2008, -2/+3680 bucks a month with taxes and fees and only 450 minutes. ATT can ***** off.
- rimantas, on 06/10/2008, -10/+43How exactly do megapixels add clarity? More megapixels on small matrix means only one thing - more noise.
The only need for megapixels is if you are going to print large prints of your photos.
2mpx is about 2000 x 1000 - more than enough to view on screen. - dheaddy, on 06/10/2008, -4/+34I can see you're being dugg down, but I had exactly the same thoughts last night after the initial hype wore off.
I currently own a old chunky N95 and am considering upgrading to the 3G iPhone come October when my contract expires (I already own a 16Gb Touch btw), but I thought to myself, of all the features I could live without, video recording is probably not one of them.
Just thinking about the number of funny videos I've captured over the past 5 years or so, they've all come from my phones.
I can't fathom why Apple would leave this functionality out of the device when it's clearly capable of video as seen by 3rd party apps. Will it be added to firmware 3.0 and we all herald it as if Apple has innovated brilliantly once again? If so I think we should all feel very silly when that day rolls round.
I love Apple to bits as a brand and a company, but noone else could get away with leaving this out and people going crazy for the device. Imagine if the HTC Touch Diamond had no video recording and no explanation was given, the reviewers would go crazy about it, no matter how slick the UI was. - Jaxim, on 06/10/2008, -3/+28It might have a cheaper upfront cost, but at an extra $10/month cost for 2 years, it's practically the same price. It's only seemingly cheaper; just an illusion. Plus, now you HAVE to sign a contract at the store, so you're forced to get the dataplan even if you didn't want to and didn't want to sign a contract with AT&T. As a business user, I would NOT get this phone. Not only because there probably isn't a business discount like other phones, but because there is no removable battery, which is essential for business people who travel a lot.
No, I think I'll wait until they announce a 32-64GB version. - u8myfoood, on 06/10/2008, -3/+28If you check out the phones from Japan, Korea and China, they are years past the technology that Apple uses in their "INNOVATIVE" designs. It is just the fact that the FCC and too many patent laws keeping out newer technologies. In Japan, they have built in TV tuners, as well as video chatting in their cellphones, as well as 3G for SEVERAL YEARS, unlike the US, where AT&T is still trying to make it network wide.
Basically like thinboyslim said, its nothing more than a 5 year old cellphone with a shiny exterior and a fancy large touch screen. I'm sure if LG, Samsung, or Motorola had introduced this product without being associated with the iPod and Apple franchises, this phone would be a lot less popular. - peaceninja, on 06/10/2008, -18/+415 reasons not to buy one:
(1) proprietary hardware and software controlled by an increasingly arrogant company (ie, Microsoft 15 years ago)
(2) The monthly bill will be enormously expensive
(3) battery is still physically locked inside the phone, you pretty much have to pay their 69$ dollar 'peace of mind' fee so that you don't have to worry for two years but after that it's all up in the air
(4) still the same funky tiny keyboard, too clumsy to use by dudes with big hands or chicks with lobster hands, no tactile response; i dont overall blame them for this but do they even give you the option to type notes and such using a phone numeric keypad mixed with predictive text technology?
(5) i'm willing to bet that they are still doing bluetooth wrong (making it for an earpiece only and not able to be used to seemlessly transfer files between iphones or other devices, or as the Zune calls it, 'squirting') - merm, on 06/10/2008, -11/+34Biggest reason to not buy an iPhone. It's on AT&T. I'll wait until it's available on another carrier thanks.
- stylishgeek, on 06/10/2008, -1/+21There was never a $699 16GB iPhone. Do they just make up "facts" for these articles?
- Canadian0207, on 06/10/2008, -4/+23I'm waiting till the Google phones comes out
- Qong, on 06/10/2008, -7/+25It's definitely a cool phone, but the issue for me is that it just seems harder to do things with one hand on your iphone. On my blackberry there's so much that I can do with one hand free, if I'm busy with something else or just have to check something out real fast, I can do it now; it doesn't seem like the same thing is possible with an iphone.
Maybe I'm wrong though, I've only played around with one for a few minutes and that was quite a while ago. I'll try messing around with one again to see if I can get the hang of it with one hand; the lower price definitely makes it a lot more attractive than it was before. - atgmac, on 06/10/2008, -8/+25Nope. I use my phone maybe once a week. £35 ($70) per month is way to expensive.
iPhone: £99 ($200)
2 Year Contract: £840 ($1680)
Total: £939 ($1880) - l815, on 06/10/2008, -4/+20Am I the only one who still uses a cell phone to make CALLS?
Mind you the quality is still as bad as it was 5 years ago... - inactive, on 06/10/2008, -0/+13He's just saying that adding more pixels isn't going to make it any less a piece of ***** than it already is. In fact, it might be even worse, since less light is going to reach each pixel. So, you'll get more pixels (which you wouldn't see on the screen), but more noise and less light. To improve the picture quality, you need to make the pixels bigger (which, given the same matrix, means less pixels). This is why a 6MP digital SLR costs so much more than a 6MP pocket camera - the actual sensor is larger, larger pixels, which receives more light per pixel and thus less noise.
- synchestric, on 06/10/2008, -1/+12Will it be possible to use it as a 3G modem?
- thurows, on 06/10/2008, -3/+14(6) Not my current phone carrier.
(7) I don't want to switch phone carriers. - Radan, on 06/10/2008, -2/+12How is it still freaking possible that ANYONE still looks at the all mighty holy "megapixels" (which is a stupid term in the first place imo) to determine the quality of the photo, especially in days like these when every kid on the block runs around with daddy's system camera?
- aldableep3, on 06/10/2008, -4/+13clarity usually has nothing to do with the resolution of the camera.. if you actually set that camera to 2 megapixels and and the highest quality you will most likely have a great looking image suitable for a large desktop background
- CressCrowbits, on 06/10/2008, -5/+13Surely you aren't defending the iPhone's camera? Pictures from it are borderline useless, especially in anything other than full daylight or over-bright indoor lighting.
- MacParrot, on 06/10/2008, -2/+10DON'T buy ANY phone for its ability to take pictures. They all suck. The iPhone's built-in camera just sucks more
- mrgreen4242, on 06/10/2008, -1/+9Sprint SERO (500 min, unlimited: nights starting @7pm, weekends, mobile to mobile, texting, data, MMS) for $30 per month, Palm Centro for $99, iPod touch 16gb for $400, decent GPS navigation system for $150 = $1370 vs. 16gb iPhone for $299, 450 minutes, NOT unlimited night, weekend, texts, no MMS, and unlimited data for $70 per month = $1980.
I'll have $610 left over, and while the Centro is no iPhone I can still access my email, the internet, cell calls/texts, have mobile photo sending and get the "iPhone experience" when on WiFi, have a better GPS unit that will work without cell signal (iPhone = aGPS) and 2 out of my 3 devices will keep working after my subscription with a cell carrier ends. Plus, I can watch movies on my iPod until the battery gives out while flying across the country and still have a working cell phone when I land, which is a really big deal to me.
And did I mention I'll have an extra $600+ left over (none of these include taxes, and taxes on cell plans can be hefty, so there's a good chance you'll save even more than $610). That will nearly pay for the entire two years of a cell plan and phone for my wife, which if you think about it, is a pretty big deal. - geeke, on 06/10/2008, -1/+9if I could use it with my current carrier tmobile then I would get one. but since I can' t not gonna get one.
- BadAsh71, on 06/10/2008, -1/+8When have you ever seen a Cell Phone that had Digital Camera quality photo capabilities? IIRC, there is a 5 megapixel Cell Phone out there but in all the reviews it has never lived up to the quality of a 5 or even 4 megapixel camera for that matter.
Dude, its a phone!
Lets just hope the "phone" part works better now :-) - luckyguy2000, on 06/10/2008, -2/+9buried for being spam
- RadicalEdward, on 06/10/2008, -2/+9What you guys are all failing to see is how all these things come together. Most of you talk over and over about specs. Like Pittance, you say " walkman (mp3 capabilities, essentially an ipod)" essentially is the key word there. There have been tons of mp3 players, and there were LONG before the iPod. but the iPod was different. It was easier to use and manage. WinMo phones do all the same stuff the iPhone does, but which is easier to use. Granted the iPhone isn't easier for EVERYONE, but no phone is. If you guys don't like the phone, don't buy it. It's that simple.
- invinciblechunk, on 06/10/2008, -4/+11The other manufacturers have had a year to catch up with Apple... and they STILL think they can get away with forcing people into a 2-year contract? Whatever, turtleneck. I'm buying a Nokia.
- leprix, on 06/10/2008, -2/+9I don't want to be in the room when a Zune starts squirting.
- fastly, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7Buried for regurgitating old news! Nothing new here...
- g00dbye, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7You're absolutely right. I can't stand when people think that more megapixels immediately means better camera. Not true at all. Now, what the new iPhone DOES need is a friggin' flash on that camera.
- pault107, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6Can we see your funny videos?
- jackusage, on 06/10/2008, -1/+71. Price
2. 3G Browsing Speed
3. Greater International Support
4. Applications Galore
5. iPhone: Still at the Head of the Class - jocknerd, on 06/10/2008, -2/+8You're joking right? Half the price initially. In the long run, it costs about $40 more. But thats how Americans want it. We like subsidized phones and expensive service plans.
- Qong, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6I know that these comments are mostly jokes, but I have to use my phone one handed quite a bit actually.
What do you do when you're walking down the street with a coffee or something and you have to use your phone? Make pit-stops? - thinboyslim, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7The Nokia N96 comes out in October. It'll have everything your phone has now plus 16Gb storage AND a microSD slot so the memory is expandable to 24Gb.
- haentz, on 06/10/2008, -7/+13My Treo 750 goes out the window... Hello iPhone 3G!
- johnnyboy239, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6I GOT SOMETHING THAT REQUIRES ....... ohhh.... wait
- raynar, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7How about this:
*release iPhone for $100. quadruple the amount of people who would buy it.
*unlocked
The end. - tehmacuser, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6why are you being dugg down, I was thinking the same thing.
- inactive, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6It has no effect on the quality, only the number of pixels. If you look at a 0.5MP (800x600) picture, such as http://ftp.pcworld.com/pub/screencams/flower-sharp ... and compare it to any picture I've ever seen off a 2MP cameraphone, the 0.5MP picture looks way better. Depth of field aside (impossible with a cameraphone), the focused area is much sharper, free of noise.
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh54/cosycat/BM ...
There's another example at the same resolution with a flat depth. Compare the detail on the trees in the background to any phone picture. In fact, I've never even seen a phone picture where you can make out individual pixels.
This is why I wish they had a front-facing camera. The camera is pretty much useless for photographs, and always will be (even Apple can't change the laws of optics.) However, a front-facing camera might be good for video phone calls. - Zephik, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6Well, imho, I only read two reasons why I should buy the Apple iPhone 3G.
1. Price - Agreed
2. 3G Browsing Speed - Very nice indeed
3. Greater International Support - Shouldn't it have that anyways? Why is that a feature? Its not a feature, at least not one that concerns me, or most of the rest of the world.
4. Didn't the first iPhone have applications galore too? So no big changes really, just a few more apps to the already large list of current apps. We all knew it was bound to happen and I'm sure there are plenty more cool/useful apps to come. Therefore, not a feature, but a standard. It is the iPhone after all, its just to be expected.
5. No, its not. Ever been to Japan? The iPhone in Japan would be considered a nice looking phone that can't do nearly as much when compared with THEIR top models phones. This thing is still missing some of the basics for crying out loud. - yosserhughes, on 06/10/2008, -3/+8Man this gonna be soooo cool!; I'll have my iPod on my left hip and my iPhone on my right, all I'll need is a long black iCoat, (one on order), and I'll look just like iNeo going into battle. My iPhone'll ring and I'll whip it out of the iHolster and scrunch it to my iEar, "Hi, this is Gervais', I'll drawl, giving a slow twirl so everyone in iStarbucks will see what an utterly retarded plonker I am.
The boys'll just go crazy. - TheSnuffster, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6Chicks with lobster hands. Mmm!
- Twinnie, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6Maybe but some people do want to view them in large print, I can think of at least two people I know right now who like to do that. How would it be so difficult to do that on a high-end phone when most companies have better cameras on low-mid-end phones? And besides, it should at least have a flash and video recording out of the box. Not to mention the camera quality sucks anyway, go to Flickr and look for N95 and iPhone photos.
- codelogic, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6Half price with a two year contract.
I repeat... Two years! - catachip, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6AT&T has an exclusivity agreement through 2012. I'll be on iPhone 6 by then.
