- mrmorris, on 07/09/2008, -3/+25What's going on here? Why are first 25-30 comments massively buried?
- picciano, on 07/09/2008, -0/+10I was thinking the same thing, until I actually READ the first 25-30 comments. They mostly deserve their burials.
- jhop, on 07/09/2008, -6/+12"Apple: the GPS receiver's antenna is too small to replicate turn-by-turn navigation of a full unit."?!?!? HUH?
WTF is he talking about. If the antenna allows the software to get a fix on your position, then turn by turn is strictly a software function. The antenna either works well or it doesn't. - 0260, on 07/09/2008, -7/+12Will it still make you look like the trendiest ***** on the block?
- teh_techie, on 07/09/2008, -4/+9You "have" the Instinct and it "sucks"...
If you "sold it", shouldn't it be that you HAD the instinct, and it "sucked"? - gllopc, on 07/09/2008, -1/+6A Palm Centro trumps an iPhone? I can see an Instinct, but a Centro?
Did you even bother to jailbreak the iPhone? - BNash577, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4So you dropped Sprint, picked up an iPhone, sold it, and then picked up a Centro? Good god man, that must have cost a fortune in contract drop, activation, and upgrade fees.
- ThinkBox, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4I heard the UI is slow and its just a wanna be clone. the touch isnt as nice with fingers as it is with a stylus and users were constantly frustrated by the UI when they wanted to use their fingers but had to pull the stylus out for accuracy. The phone doesnt have a slot for the stylus either.
- Badandy127, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5No, I have not used the Instinct, but I'm sure it's a great phone. But what it is, and always will be, is a copy of the iPhone, trying to cash in on the iPhone's fame while having a few better features and some worse.
The only thing holding it back is its browser? That's a HUGE part of my phone using experience. No flash? No problem, flash sites are performance hogs anyway... - jedioniram, on 07/09/2008, -1/+4I don't think this was meant as an upgrade really for current iPhone users. It's better than last year's model (as it should be) which might bring new people in, but not so much better that people who own an iPhone already are pissed off that they spent $600 last year on it. Pretty well played by Apple, in my opinion.
- youareretarded, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3"Or have I missed something?"
Yes, you aren't in America and the authors aren't in Sweden;) - drewkinney, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3Badandy has a point. The copy changes the way the user interacts with the browser. krische you say the browsers are not that different. Then you describe how the zoom is limited to a proscribed list of zoom sizes. The is the best example of a clone missing the entire point of the innovation. The pinch zoom in safari allows the user to be the ultimate decision maker in what and how they view a page, whereas the clone allows the developer of the device to choose how users should use the browser.
The model with more user control will ultimately win in this scenario. In case you haven't noticed the focus has turned to experience and user control and creation. The old model of "we will decide what is the optimum viewing size" is dead. - ubtimmay, on 07/09/2008, -3/+5CMDA is not modern and Verizon was given first dibbs and screwed it up because they wanted to use their own OS completely ruining the concept of the iPhone
- graemee, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Are you still doing it?
- haentz, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1If the antenna is too small, it doesn't get fixes from enough satellites fast enough for navigation.
- gettarat, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1I'm going to get one. Yes, I know, it doesn't have MMS, copy/paste, or a forward facing video cam, but I would only really want the copy/paste. MMS is for 13 year olds who haven't learned the grown up way to send pictures: email.
http://nextargps.org/ - ShutYourPieHole, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2I agree. AT&T was the only company/network that was really ready to sell the farm to allow Apple to do what they wanted. Apple spoke to both Verizon and Sprint about possible deals. Hindsight, for the others, I think AT&T were the only ones to make the correct decision, given the track record of the iPhone thus far. Sadly it's the same reason I'll probably never have an iPhone as I just cant compromise on going to AT&T for it. It is a great device, just on the wrong network, for me anyway.
- EtherGnat, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Maybe because the majority of people who saw it earlier had the common sense to bury it as a dupe (if they felt the need) and move on without wasting time reading the comments. That means most people that are actually here probably didn't see the earlier story (I know I missed it somehow).
Furthermore why should their be so many comments about it being a repeat? If we're going to be so hard on dupe stories shouldn't we bury dupe comments as well? - Guol, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1I guess you could try digging all the comments and see if they get buried again :P
- youareretarded, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Nope, apple doesn't have that feature implemented.
- waydee, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Get a real phone and you can do this no problem.
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Our massive infrastructure makes it harder to replace existing technologies (and easier for countries such as Sweden, or say Japan), but gives us the critical mass to allow Apple to offer their handsets at a reduced price.
Also, it seems that Sweden has rolled out turbo 3g in two cities on a "test" basis, so part of me thinks you are overexaggerating the speeds/availability of the service you cited. As an example, one article I read states, "Telia's Turbo-3G offers broadband speeds up to 7.2 Mbit/s".
In any case, I'm not disputing our wireless technologies are way behind other countries, merely stating that it isn't quite as different as you seem to have pointed out. - Scott31182, on 07/09/2008, -2/+3I agree, with the software upgrade coming to the 1st gen iphone i just cant see the point in upgrading.
- Aleman360, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2I believe Verizon's CDMA implementation is considered a generation ahead of AT&T's base GSM network.
- EtherGnat, on 07/09/2008, -2/+3"because they wanted to use their own OS completely ruining the concept of the iPhone" [citation needed]
I highly doubt this, especially seeing how Verizon does nothing to alter the interface of Windows Mobile, Palm, or RIM phones (aside from maybe a Verizon color scheme).
From what I recall reading it wasn't that Verizon had a problem with the iPhone itself, but rather the profit sharing/control demands that Apple wanted. - EtherGnat, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2I'd love to know why I'm being dugg down and ubtimmay is being dugg up.
"Verizon Wireless, the No. 2 U.S. cellphone carrier, passed on the chance to be the exclusive distributor of the iPhone almost two years ago, balking at Apple's rich financial terms and other demands.
Among other things, Apple wanted a percentage of the monthly cellphone fees, say over how and where iPhones could be sold and control of the relationship with iPhone customers, said Jim Gerace, a Verizon Wireless vice president. "We said no. We have nothing bad to say about the Apple iPhone. We just couldn't reach a deal that was mutually beneficial.""

Please show me any evidence that Verizon wanted to make substantial changes to the iPhone OS, or has EVER made or demanded substantial changes to any smart phone's operating system.
Verizon screws up tradtional handsets six ways to Sunday, but they leave their smart phones pretty much untouched. - Radan, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I'm talking about turbo3G. Our regular broadband connections usually ranges between 24mbit/s to 100mbit/s depending on whether you live in the city or not.
- kenedamick, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Can I get that again except in English this time :)
- curtisag, on 07/09/2008, -4/+5Can I hook my Iphone up to my PC or laptop and get internet connectivity? That way I can cancel my DSL service and save some money.
- Radan, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Why would there be a difference? It's the same card (I am of course talking about a 3G connection, not wifi), and I don't see how the slower processing power would change the download speed, at least not to with such magnitude.
Here's a link to such card if you still wonder what I'm talking about (yes, it's in Swedish, but it shouldn't be that hard to understand the more technical terms)
https://www.tewss.telia.se/privat/adminpackage/set ... - krische, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1I think maybe you got the wrong idea about the browser. Its not that it is unusable. It just doesn't have the "pinch zoom" gesture that the iPhone's safari has. Everything else about the browser is the same as safari really. The instinct uses different options for zooming. There is a zoom button that lets you switch between 1/2x, 1x and 2x zoom levels. There is also a button that shows the whole page, then you move a little square around with your finger zoom in on that section. (Much like Opera Mini if you have ever used that on a phone).
I understand what you are saying about the Instinct copying the iPhone. But just because something is not the iPhone, doesn't mean it automatically sucks. I personally don't fall for the hype of the iPhone. Everyone praises it, whereas I see the Instinct which has the same usability and even a few more features, all for cheaper and better coverage (Sprint EV-DO compared to AT&T 3G). - callmemorbid, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2you are in the perfect spot to buy this
- HumanRecalled, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1man what a lame ploy !@ to get dugg up !
Yeah well only big fat christmas hams digg me up ! - youareretarded, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1How does the instincts web browser compare to the iphones?
It doesn't and that's why no current phone can touch the iphone.
If you take out the safari browser from the iphone you end up with a piece of crap with a great touch screen and no one really likes touching crap:p - callmemorbid, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1all are being buried mine was the first one...
- banmaster, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1As 'prefect' as your spelling.
- TexasShiv, on 07/09/2008, -3/+3I don't know about you guys, but I've never had shoddy reception with the original phone?

- banmaster, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Hooray for fatties!!
- freqk, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1I WILL NOT BE BURIED!!!
- krische, on 07/09/2008, -3/+2Have you even used an Instinct? The UI is just as simple and easy to use as the iPhone. Many of the reviews for it stated this as well. Most reviews said the only thing holding it back is its browser.
- superkendall, on 07/09/2008, -4/+3GPS and much better speakers/microphones are the other changes, and those have value as well. Not to mention reception should be much better with the plastic back.
- BNash577, on 07/09/2008, -2/+1I hope this lone cupcake can poke it's weary head through this graveyard...
- MCA2142, on 07/09/2008, -6/+5With the new comment system, I can digg you down, THEN digg you up.
I mean, I don't want to be left out of the festivities. - BNash577, on 07/09/2008, -2/+1Bury Brigade!!!
- oddworld19, on 07/09/2008, -3/+1Buried-buried for commenting on the one who commented on the obvious
